The Arena Rex Gladiatorial Kickstarter Has Begun!
March 16, 2013 by brennon
Arena Rex: Gladiatorial Combat in a Mythic Age has finally hit Kickstarter and they have already burst through their target! Check out some of the different miniatures that are in the pipeline below...
Some of the concept art we have seen in the run-up to this, but others are an extra special surprise. I hope the vast majority of the art continues in the anime/manga style.
In terms of the game, each figure is 35mm scale and is exquisite in its detail. But it's not just about the fancy models. The game is also getting Kickstarted too and your funding will help them push this game out there into the wider world.
I'm looking forwards to this, and not just because I have been watching Spartacus recently.
Will you pick up gladius and gift money at the feet of Jupiter himself?

I just looked at the KS and this looks great! I wish I had the funds to contribute but at least I can pass it on by word of mouth.
Really nice minis! I hope this does really well indeed.
As the pledge level I would be interested in costs $165 (£109) I would expect a little more from a Kick Starter than 10 minis 5 dice (which look AWESOME), couple of tokens and cards with each mini. I understand it is not a shopping cart and you should not be looking to get you own weight in mini’s for £2.50. However, it is like an interest free loan to the company and a financial investment which has no guarantee for the backer and I think they could do a little more to help get that money out from peoples pockets. Especially as a lot of people on the KS are getting quite poor from the constant pledging and there is a HUGE amount of quality projects to back. That being said, they have already been successfully funded within the first couple of days, which you can not argue with. They have done well. However, I just feel that if they want a lot more pledgers and more funds to play with, they are going to have to become more appealing to the tight gits that some of us gamers are, hehe.
Hell D’orado has been successfully funded and I hope they get a lot more interest tbh as they are still sitting around the $75,000 mark. HD and Arena Rex seem to have the same advertising style, in that the things you unlock, you are then able to buy for addition funding of approx £11 per man. For a Kickstarter I think this is a bit high and seems a premium for such models imho.
I am not saying it isn’t worth it, I am just trying to review it in-line with it’s competitors, which offer amazing discounts such as Zombicide, Rivet Wars and Wild West Exodus.
I hope this does well and if things improve later, I may be a backer myself. 😀
I’d argue that with things like Zombicide, the Kickstarters are effectively a pre-order system from bigger companies (or at least bigger backing from CMON). With Arena Rex, this is a very small group of people and what they’re asking for is what they need to create those models. Resin does not get cheaper when you increase production numbers like plastic.
Plus I don’t think £10 or £11 per model is that bad when you look at the quality of them, in fact it’s around the same price as, if not cheaper than, most companies who produce very top quality resin models.
I’ve already backed as I love the models and in my eyes this is a real Kickstarter; I’m actually helping a company get off the ground.
I completely agree, but I don’t think that is the issue now with KS. Irrespective of what it is for, it is in fact how it is perceived by backers. For gamer’s, it is a view to get a really good deal, when other games are rapidly increasing prices (on the whole). So please do not think that I disagree with you, as I do not. I just see a trend that companies who offer better deals, get more followers and then improve at a faster rate. Which is obviously part of their business plan and each business plan differs from business to business.
Don’t worry, I have no intention to start an argument 🙂
Sadly I have to agree with you, there are a lot of people who actually back out of a Kickstarter because it doesn’t offer free things as stretch goals. It’s quite ironic that although Kickstarter is meant to help new businesses, it could actually turn out to hinder them or even stop them from starting up completely due to the Kickstarter models of those like (but not exclusively) CMON.
The concept art and the sculpt(s) look really nice.
This is more than within line of the market and I hope it can do well. I so wish I could put in some cash but I’m but a mere man. This is one of the few games that stands out because of the quality of the models and the idea.
As for the view that backers have for wether they pitch in or not, it will always for more bang for less bucks. Its just the nature of men and justly so. It has plenty time to pass the stretch goals and everyone can choose from the different groups as they wish from what I seen. The prices beside them show what I will cost if you want to add more to your pledge in order to get something or your just wish to have one model.
I would be more intrigued with some indication of a campaign, or the idea of running a stable of fighters, gaining prowess, wealth, skills. I fear battles otherwise would be somewhat repetitive in style.
