Ax Faction Prepare to Burn the Witch!
March 24, 2013 by dracs
Ax Faction have published a preview of their upcoming sculpt, the sexy Witch Hunter.
Yes religious bigotry is always better when it is wearing as little clothing as possible.
Seriously though, the miniature looks pretty cool and should provide you with a nice fantasy character to use in RPG's. The one major fault I would have with it is that nothing (apart from the cross) really says "witch hunter" to me.
Will Ax Faction's lovely lady keep you safe from the witches?

Sexy, yes, but dumb also.
Wow. If that be Mother Superior I am gonna get me to a nunnery!
The cross is the hilt of her sword Sam
She has thigh length leather boots so is clearly a witch hunter.
I think…
Foe me, this line is wasting some serious sculpting talents on puerile pin ups.
Guess there is a market for it but they would sell as many, or more models that could actually be used because of the quality imho
The last ‘witch hunter’ I ran into with thigh-high leather boots was in Nuremburg, and she cost 100 euro.
Agree with chibi. Tons of sculpting talent…not enough good taste.
I really dont understand why the gaming community badmouths pinup style models. The main “wargamer” population is teen to middle aged men, and all of the major companies out there like Games Workshop and Privateer Press have constantly dumbed down their model ranges to be “acceptable” by parental standards (i.e. the crappy new daemonette models) and everyone complains about it, yet when a smaller company sculpts out a new pinup or just a nice cheesy chain bikini style model based off some old Conan art, everyone calls it a waste of talent. I guess its true, gamers just want to complain about something. I just find it funny so many dudes complain about a well sculpted female model.
If you don’t understand already then there may be little point trying to explain why I think it is poor, but here goes any way.
First of all I have a daughter. It is not out of any prudery or embarrassment that this sort of tosh irks me. It is out of respect for her as a young woman. That and the fact that we both roll our eyes at the impracticality of pin up garb. Or rather lack thereof.
It is gratuitous. There is no need for the lack of cladding other than pure titillation.
Personally nakee 28mm don’t do it for me. YMMV.
I like a sense of realism in fantasy. I will buy into all sorts of imaginings if it has consistency and an internal logic with the narrative/setting. So a woman half naked on the battlefield is not going to get far wearing nothing but a veil and a smile.
Female Barbarians are an exception, since male Barbarians also tend to wear not a lot.
So fair dos.
Overall it is silly, trite and unconvincing. It is disrespectful to women and panders to rather base attitudes of adolescents. It is also tiresome and cliched. We just don’t need it any more.
ps A witch hunter is hardly the same as a female Barbarian, see my comment above
Amen. I’m all for beautiful female characters, but clad realistically. You don’t have to go much further than Reaper Miniatures for that. Do a search for Werner Klocke’s models and you’ll see what I mean. My partner’s game characters are always one of his sculpts.
Sorry but, I feel your reasoning is in my opinion is wrong.
Ax faction is a range of pinup models, it fills a niche and it is clear about it, it is neither forced on you nor a necessity , like adult magazines, books, ectr its a category one can choose to ignore.
Your reasoning has more validity when the odd pinup (or x rated) model comes out of nowhere in an established range that has none of this, but here, I feel not.
The reasoning is based on how I try to behave, my expectations of what miniatures are for, and how believable and engaging something may or may not be.
Therefore it is perfectly valid.
As I don’t expect someone who cannot fathom the criticism will understand my arguments, so I will never comprehend the necessity for 28-32mm pin up models. The odd one would be preferable to an entire range if that one was a female Barbarian.
I do chose to ignore, but since they are appearing on my gaming site of preference I am entitled to express an opinion.
Sorry on second read I understood you replied to a question on why some badmouth the pinups, I thought your post was the first one.
Yes, you reasoning on why one may not like pinup miniatures is valid it is a personal choice, Sorry again on my first read I understood what you wrote wrongly.
I actually do understand that line of reasoning, and as a person of decent moral character respect that, as both a married man, and older sibling to much younger children. However, i will say what i say to many people who are upset over these types of ideas or models. its a game. More so then that, its a “Fantasy game” or Fantasy styled. Call it as you will, and as such, fantasizes things. it fantasizes the world. the creatures, and yes the plot and how the people look. if you are a common sense thinking person, which based on your comment I believe very much you are, then you know its not real, you know its for fun and made up, and above all is made with all of the above in mind. No one complain over how miniatures depict warriors as over armored or over buff juggernauts of death, so why then is it terrible that a female model is portrayed with what is a “fantasized” aesthetic to it concerning its beauty, or body structure?
You used the word “upset”.
It does not upset me in the least. Bores me, yes. Upsets? No.
It is so tedious to see these mini porn things.
it is a fantasy game? Okay, so in this fantasy game world women wear bugger all but are expected to battle demons and monsters with sharp pointy things. What woman in her right mind would do this? Barbarians excepted?
I don’t care how much it is made up it makes no sense. The only reason that women wear such stupid useless garb is to satisfy puerile male fantasies. End of immersion.
And actually I do complain about over muscled male warriors who eat nowt but entire raw oxen and steroids. It is a running theme of cpauls1’s to delight at weapons the size of Japan, with all the Freudian implications of huge choppers..
It can be made up, cool as heck and still be believable. I can engage in all sorts of crazy stuff. I was awed by the exploits of the Gods and Heroes from an early age. Tales of dragon’s teeth sewn into soil ploughed by a bull with fiery breath and up sprouts a crop of skeletal warriors to be reaped.
A witch hunter “babe” with thigh length high heeled boots and a rotary pull towel between her legs? No thanks.
After readying the other conversation you had with Psycho, I do give you that when its on a game site you frequent its your right and indeed an encouragement to place your opinion down on these things, and i do respect that. I think you are missing my point in my first statement however that targeted your remark on a waste of talent. Telling some one your not into their “Puerile” style of pandering to male fantasies is one thing, telling them that their model range is a waste of talent is something else. Much like telling any other artist that their time and work spent on their creations is a waste because it does not pander to Your specified moral requirements shows a lack of understanding for how to critique a piece of work based off your opinion.
On the subject of fantasized work, your opinion is the same as a movie goer who watches something like the movie 300, then complains that the movie was too “fictional” compared to the real world events, even though you admit to the fact it is a movie designed to aggrandize the real events. if the modeling hobby of Fantasy war games was to adhere to such a structure, it would fail. Because it wouldn’t be fantasy. People play these games to have a window into a different world, and if that world so happens to contain women that were ridiculously small amounts of armor, men who wield axes the size of their body, and monsters that swallow spaceships then so much the better.
Its a shame really, that people require so much of their “fantasy” to have such a strong tether to reality that the idea of a woman wearing a chain mail bikini annoys them so much that they must have all of their females, minus the one or two you mentioned wearing realistic and “sensible” armor in a game that is designed to bend the rules and laws of reality from an artistic stand point.
Perhaps your initial comment should have been worded more towards the way you have held this conversation, in stating that a constant flow of pinup style models and over exaggerated fantasizing of such things annoys you as appose to attacking the model and the use of the artists talent in making it. Yet I do give you your opinion, we all have things in our hobby that annoy the crap out of us.
Mate, if you have been so dedicated as to research my previous conversations then I suggest that the issue is bothering you more than me.
Sorry but I am tired and not able to read your long piece.
I will just say that I stand by my comment. The sculptor is very talented. The subject matter is puerile.
If you don’t like my opinions on the matter, too bad.
I think I’ve been converted, chibi. Queen’s Own Peurile Pinup Regiment has a nice ring to it. “Tuck in that chainmail thong, soldier!” 🙂
Sergeant-Majorette:
Arse in boobs out soldier
I want to see my own face in your lips! MAOR GLOSS!
By the right, LII-IIFT Leg!
POOIINT THOSE TOES
Pout Dammit POUT!
“Don’t slouch! Bend at the hips! Get that arse higher!”
As long as Her Majesty isn’t the Honourary Colonel and decides to dress “regimental.” What a pinup model that would make.
“Yes religious bigotry is always better when it is wearing as little clothing as possible.”
Kinda depends on the religious bigot wearing said clothing….
Not a fan just strikes me as being a bit silly.
Both King James I & VI and his Witchfinder General used to wear this sort of thing.
But usually not in public.
I’ve seen the woodcuts. NSFW!
It is rather ironic that she’s got a vail on (made to hide the beauty of the wearer so men don’t struggle and sin) yet the body clothing is designed to tantalize men. I would buy into this reasoning if the face had no vail.
The level of detail so far great. I really wish Axe Faction can move beyond the pin up stuff and make models that I’ll be proud to show off. I know they have the talent. Just look at the entire range, but I feel its rather wasted on sexual imagery. I’m rather tired of pin ups from all companies. But lets be honest, Kingdom Death didn’t make its millions from doing respectively dressed ladies.
Sculpt itself is very highly detailed and shows that sculptor has put some attention to it. Sure this is little silly sculpt but I can watch over it.
