With the move to England well and truly finished, it's time to get down to some proper gaming. Brian, Steve, Stu, & Martin sit down to have a look at what happened last weekend at Carnevale's Starvation event here at Tabletop Nation.

Works now. Thanks @dignity !
And they now have Wayland Games as a point of sale on their site. T’internet is happy again. 🙂
I am really on the fence with this one, which no doubt is one of the game mechanics, hehe.
Not to keen on the models, although the Cocrodile – Doctors of the Ospedale and The Black Spectre seem pretty cool looking. If I were to choose though, the Doc’s win the Ow shiny certificate.
Think I will watch the videos to see what the game plays like. Only needing a few models seems like a big bonus. And for those that just like the game, I guess you could just buy the rules and find other models as stand-ins I guess.
Great artwork in the book and full colour!!! That must cost at least £45 for that sort of quality.
No WAIT!!!! what do I see? Free rules for download via their website: http://vesper-on.com/images/stories/Documentos/English/carnevale%20eng.pdf
Have to say thats a lot better than paying that much for a huge tea coster, hehe. 😛
Pssssst guys, put Wayland games on your Distributions page. i think that it would be good business etiquette, since all the advertising BoW & TTN have done. 🙂 hehe
Also Description on items would be nice to. Main one being Rule Book, Softback or Hardback? Although at €25 I would think it was softback, which is good value for a decent game ruleset. 🙂
Bad sound on this vid. 🙁
This makes a good introduction to Carnevale week, (although Count Pantelimon was better!) but didnt really tell us any more than that.
The Count thanks you for the complement and demands that you play more Carnevale.
Personally I’m glad to see the TableTop Nation guys enjoying the game, I will have to get my Patricians painted up for when I can get over there.
BoW Sam
Apologies for the sound. Unfortunately the Count was unavailable for our Starvation chat. That said, if it served to steer you towards the Carnevale week content on BoW then ‘mission accomplished’!
I do find the archives of theme week content one of the best kept secrets here on BoW!
Secret Stu? I try and tell everyone about them. Great source of rules sets which are very handy and saves a lot of reading for people with learning difficulties like me. They are a great way to get to know the staff in them to. They really big a game to life, a lot more than any 400+ page rule book, hehe 🙂
I have informed my nephew about these videos and I hope he is paying attention. I have got him into Infinity as his first game and got him a Acontecimento starter box to whet his appetite. 🙂
Share the “themed weeks” page to at least ten people, or a little puppy or an angel will die of sadness and heartbreak. 😛
Happy to see this game is gaining more interest. i wish they would put a player locator up on their website.
Just watched video 2/6 and I have to say that I am become a bit of a fan of the rules so far. Seem basic enough to have learnt them after a game or two, but complex and interesting enough to allow for a plethora of funky dynamic moves. Kinda reminds me of those Hollywood films, hehe. 😛
Will defiantly be watching the remaining 4 videos tomorrow, and I would like to thank you for bringing this back to my attention (sometimes things just don’t sink in the first time,…..or second….or…)
Is it my eyes? or does the freeze frame picture of this video look like Justin has pixelated out Stewies BIG DONkey bucket? 😛
Caption contest a GO!!!!!!!!! 😀 Winner gets to have their chest signed by stewie. Remember guys, you have to be in it to win it!! 🙂
I ran some demos of the game in celebration of the Starvation campaign at my local shop on Saturday. Lots of comments about the cool models and interesting setting. I’m looking forward to playing some more games now that some of my friends have at least seen the system.
I will say that the components and joint locations are not ideal on some of the models. I had quite a time putting a few of them together before my demos.
Just finished watching all the videos on how to play Carnevale and I have to say that I was totally wrong to sit on the fence for so long. Years ago I used to love playing Skaven in Mordheim as I loved the sneaky rats with slings pebble dashing my foes, hehe. However, what I have learned in the Carnevale videos is that this game appears to be similar to Mordheim…..only on a heap load of testosterone to help you run all over the terrain. The fact it makes the terrain so important as a 3D structure seems a HUGE boost in the right direction for wargaming, and perhaps other systems should learn from this. So long has it been such a focus on how a model is killed, in order to produce enjoyment. We tend to only think of excitement as the moment we smash the opponents face in (which is good I must admit). What Carnevale does, is concentrate on that DELIVERY SYSTEM of said smash/wallop/kapow. I would urge many a gamer to at least learn the rules to this game, if it isn’t your setting, fair enough I guess. But how can you improve the system that you are already playing? After all, the rule books are ONLY a guide (As @warzan mentions often and I applaud in his general direction). How would Infinity work if you could scale tall buildings with most of your models and then leap off with a flying elbow to the noggin (not you @nogginthenog, you’re safe). Not that I am saying Infinity is poor, far far from it. Only had a few games and loved them all!! What I am saying though, is if we learn from these guys and the mechanics they have produced (or some of your own). What is it we could produce as local house rules? in many of our games today?
Being able to jump between terrain, with pistols blazing, seems a nice idea to. To accompany this, we can lay in wait expecting the enemy to pounce before that lucky shot makes contact between his eyes. Or to prepare yourself against a brutal assault from a slimy Fish-man (although the knuckle sandwich may taste nice! 😛 )
What could be better than the moment your enemy thinks he has gotten away, only for you to get some nice critical destiny dice which propels you over the canal and into your opponents face and ruin his day. or getting that unsuspecting distance on your flame template to fry the enemy leader, which fears their gang into a panic.
Not only does this game seem a cheap intro into the hobby, (especially for kids, as they love bouncing off of walls at the best of times). £20 for the rule book, now thats great news!! but it gets even better…. this is another company that offers free downloadable rules (88 pages). I have to say they look really nice with some of the art inside. Downloads can be found here with a link to all the BoW youtube videos to!!: http://www.vesper-on.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=5&Itemid=10&lang=en. So this has free rules, I am guessing you all have miniatures that could be sub’d into the game. which would = £0 invested for a new game system. Or £20 book + £30×2 for 2x starter boxes = £80 at the most to start playing between 2 people. Thats not to bad in my book, and it opens up the possibilities of building a new terrain set as a new project to. 🙂
Have a few mates that you play with each week and it may be getting a bit stale? why not try out their campaign system and tool up your gang with extra items which give additional benefits to actions in and out of combat. Thus pulling you into the atmosphere of the game and granting the best of your members long life and the chance to fight another day (after a nice well earned walk around the shops for something big and pointy to be used as your very own insurance policy next week). Perhaps you could even get a league going or a club pyramid system to boost competitive spirit and the spiking of your mates drinks as you trick your way up the ranks (the families of your mates should always remain impartial to your sneaky tactics and never brought into harms way!…….Unless it was one of your secret missions, wahhahahaha (joke)). 😀
Anyway, that was just a quick ditty from me explaining why I was soooo wrong to ignore this game for as long as I did. I would like to thank @stuart for shoving his piece in my face again, @warzan for approx 3 hours of talking with only one breath and @dracs for his tenacious attempts and getting a word in edgeways whilst presenting the Carnevale shows with warren. And ofc thanks to the Vesper-on guys Brien (AKA Kieth from Boyzone), Steve (Steve Hodge (ex Nottm Forest as himself) and Martin (aka Shaking Stevens).
All joking aside (I hope, sorry if it was OTT), thanks guys, without the services you present to the community, I wouldn’t have had reason to sit on my arse all day drinking coffee and getting all hot and sweaty over super looking models!! 😀 (apart from the fact my back is pretty much broke, but t’is but a flesh wound).
Lots of hugs and kisses
Mick
