Skaven from Hell…Pit
January 22, 2011 by dracs
Last week, you may have seen the new releases for the Skaven army. These new little (or in some cases, very big) nasties seem to have generated quite a bit of excitement among all you fans of the back-stabbing rodents and now they have scuttled their way onto Beasts of War.
Let's start with the one that seems to have generated the greatest splash... and given its size this is hardly surprising!
From the twisted depths of the imaginations of those true Master Mutators at Games-Workshop, we are proud to present that malformed monstrosity, the Hell Pit Abomination! Give him a big hand folks.
This bizarre creature (and that's using the word in its broadest possible sense) is the pinnacle of achievement for the Skaven of Clan Moulder and judging by its rules, this is obviously with good reason. With D6 impact hits, Regeneration, Terror, Stubborn and its Too Horrible to Die rule, the Hell Pit Abomination is a an effective, if some what erratic, monster of battlefield carnage.
So, does the model do it justice?
I have seen a number of good conversions for this unit and I have to admit, I liked the fact there was no model for it, as it forced people to use their imagination to make the weirdest creation they possibly could. I believe Belfast GW had a rather good one that was partly mounted on wheels. However, despite this I have to say that I really like this new model from GW and browsing some of the discussion groups it doesn't look like I'm alone in this.
In my opinion, the sculptor has really captured the chaotic nature of these monstrosities. Also, the model's plastic sprue seems to offer a good variety of extras, to allow players to modify their Abomination, so that it can lean either to a more mechanical design or a more organic one.
Next up, we have the new Warp Lightning Cannon/Plague Claw. The Warp Lightning Cannon has been a firm favourite with Skaven players for years (but not with us who have to face them) and the Plague Claw, similarly seems to be gathering its own following. So, it is little wonder why these models have gained so much attention among Skaven players.
I have to say, I'm a little conflicted about the Warp Lightning Cannon. On the one hand, I like that it looks far more bodged together and rickety, fitting with Skaven engineering. On the other hand, the last Warp Lightning Cannon shared so much in common with the Dwarven Flame Cannon, that you could imagine that the Skaven had nicked one and improved it, as only a Skaven can. I would be interested in hearing your views on it.
Then there is the Plaague Claw. I love how this looks, especially the putrescent pile of filth in the throwing claw. Games Workshop have made a good move with all the new stuff themed around Clan Pestilence and it has really opened up the field, for players who want to base their armies around this most disgusting of the clans. As a Lizardman player, I'm just a little nervous.
Alongside these we have a variety of (somewhat) smaller releases, including the huge variety of weapons teams and of course the two special characters . Firstly, the inclusion of the Warp-Grinder and Doom-Flayer weapons teams provide a player with a few nice options for close combat. Their inclusion also provides a nice variety in the predominantly ranged weapons teams.

The two special characters are possibly the best models of the new releases. First we have Tretch Craventail. As his name suggests, he's not the bravest of characters and I believe his sculpt has really captured the sense of him staying out of arms reach while looking for opportunities.
Lastly, I'm sure Skaven veterans will join me in giving Ikit Claw a fond "welcome back". Bristling with Skaven tech and cast in a fantastic firing pose, good ol' Ikit is definitely a welcome re-release... and the curled up rat image of his standard, is just a nice little detail.
Below is the list of new Skaven releases:
- Hell Pit Abomonation
- Warp Lightning Cannon / Plague Claw
- Ikit Claw
- Tretch Craventail
- Warp Grinder Weapon Team
- Doom-Flayer Weapon Team
If you have any opinions on these new releases, or would like to show us some of your own Hell Pit Abomination conversions be sure to leave a comment below. In the meantime may the gleam from the Horned Rat's teeth illuminate you all.

Just a thing about ikit, which I bought ass a little treat to myself,If you get one,be ready to work on it for a while, his (?) flamer claw is made of three parts, connected to the body, the backpack and an armor plate …The problem about the 2 first is that they’re attached to the other pieces by fidly cables and a weak arm,so mine at least came awfully bended ,but it’s a great little model, and a joy to paint, you just have to deserve it I guess…
ThePetitBilly
I bought Ikit just to paint. I usually collect Empire. I also found the miniature a complete pain in the arse to put together. The claw needed about 2-3mm of metal filed away before it would go together.
Aside from Ikit and the warp grinder, I find the new Skaven models to be awful. The catapult/WLC kit should have been 2 separate kits as the parts don’t work for both, the HPA model is IMHO terrible and just looks like the sculptor grabbed a fistful of greenstuff and rammed it into his skaven bits box to see what got stuck in there. The Doom Flayer just looks awkward and Tretch looks more like an assassin than the coward he’s supposed to be. Not a great release.
the aboms a great model with some good customisable options, the WLCannon is good too, I wasn’t sold on the design but now ive made mine it looks alot better . ..
the PCC in the picture looks stupid – why would you only bring the arm back down to that angle and climb up on it to reload/reputrefiy!?!? also I don’t like how the painted the sludge like sick! I’m gonna paint mine up different and as for the arm, if you agree with me then don’t worry you don’t have to build it like that simply leave out the smaller floor platform from the top of the frame and it can come down to a more sensible angle =)
Man, anyone else tired of all the Skaven love? Honestly….
Just need to say this little fact….. The new skaven models were so inspiring they converted me into a skaven player, i instantly went out and purchased myself a 1,000 point army and i am allready on the way to 2,000 with the new Ikit Claw model at the forefront of the army. Fantastic job Games Workshop cant wait to see if you have any more in the pipeline like maybe some new night runners? oh pretty please the old ones just suck too much ass!!!
welcome to skaven!! =)
if you want theres a great all skaven players website where people post pictures of their srmies and conversions and you can ask question about the rules, if you like it you could join:

hope to see you on there ;P my name is plague preist phebrickid on there
doesnt seem to be working at the moment but i will get on to it asap
what kind of a twisted mind came up with something so bizzare like the hell pit abomination?
I must admit, although I’m not a fan of GW, the skaven heroes, chiefs or big models are original and very well sculpted. They truly make you want to paint them, unlike so many other !
Now, if only they work well on the battlefield…
The quality of the heroes from the new skaven is what GW should always go by. Most metal models from GW seem basic in the sculpt, with the execption of some like the dark elves and vampires heroes. I hope this is a new trend with them. The more time they place in the design stage the better for us. I give them 5/5. Some good work I must admit.
As has been said, I’m getting a little tired of the Skaven getting all the goodies, as they have been getting stuff since the Island of Blood box. I wouldn’t mind if their previous incarnations sucked, but I thought they were just as cool, if not cooler and they aren’t getting a new book yet (the Greenskins are. Of course, out of all the new imbalances in the lists, they need it first ).
That being said, I will comment on everything with an unjaded viewpoint.
The abomination – I agree that it looks great and is certainly representative of the fluff. What I absolutely hate is that all HPAs will look almost exactly the same, which is like having Chaos Spawn all be the exact same model. Even with all of the gubbins, the silhouette of the model is the same and it prevents the encouragement of people creating their own horrific beauties as they’d rather just buy one (not everyone, but the majority). I’ll miss the scratchbuilt ones as they all come out just as cool as this, but you never find two the same. Which is a pity. But, to reitigate, I do think the model perfectly captures the fluff, just not in multiples.
Warp Lightning Cannon – What on Earth has gone on here? It now looks hollow, with the runes being built from plastic (not referring to the fact it’s made of plastic, but the runes should look as though they are metal. Not explaining that well, but I don’t know how to say it better) and the wood, combined with extra height, just makes it look entirely wrong. I think the warpstone part looks cool, as does the crewmember, but that’s it. MUCH prefer the old model. Another problem is when it is built at its highest, it would fall forwards if made from actual materials and that helps to prevent suspension of disbelief.
Plague Claw Catapault – Conversely, I think this looks excellent. One problem is the highest setting (again), but not as problematic. I love the goo as well. I think this is well done and the wood helps it to have a more putrescent/rotting feel. A combined kit for these two didn’t work in both directions, but got a cool piece for one weapon at least.
Doomflayer – The “rider” looks really poor: the stance is entriely unnatural, even for a man-sized rat. Could’ve been positioned so much better. As for the machine, it looks like it’s just whirling and cogs, unlike its description of dozens of spinning blades that pulp you. The fluff and rules make it seem that if you’re in its way, you’re not even registered as dead because you’re not intact enough, but the piece looks very slow and like a simple step to the side or standing between the middle and the side would keep you alive without a problem. Not impressed by any of this piece except the cleanliness of the sculpt and the paintjob.
Warp Grinder – Beautiful piece again, although it would’ve been cool to try and make it fit the look of the Gutter Runners/Night Runners a little more, but only because it stands out a little TOO much from them for my tastes. But, it’s a problem that’s too small to care much about. It really envokes a feeling of grinding away, with green lightning sparking off and reducing solid rock to dust at a slow walk’s pace. Excellent job here.
Tretch Craventail – I find things I dislike, but can’t put my finger on them, but the same goes for things that I like. Nothing stands out as particularly bad, but nothing gets me excited about him. Would’ve been cool to have him upside and clinging to the ceiling like the fluff, but tricky and odd, so this is probably better. Nothing to shout home about, but nothing wrong with it, so quite good and nicely done.
Ikit Claw – Extremely cool and nice model. Makes me think of mech suits and such like. Two problems for me though: the flamer claw means he can’t grip things, so can’t hold someone’s head in the bladed claw and crush it whilst blasting green flame into the face, but it’s a bearable design flaw of his weapon hand. The other problem is the banner pole: the height works, but it’s the circle/symbol that seems to take me out of the rest of the design flow. Nonetheless, very beautiful piece.
Overall comments: I don’t see why everybody else is getting neglected for the Skaven, I also don’t see why they need new models, some of them don’t work, some prevent the crazy Skaven creativity and some are extremely cool and pretty pieces 😉
plaague claw????
The Skaven have so many good models, I’d play them myself if I wasn’t put off entirely by the thought of how much I’d have to paint 😉
Love the Hell Pit model, very nice indeed.
awesome looking hell pit abomination! but many would that thing stink! i am going to start a skaven army and i’m going to start with island of blood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
