Skirmish Through Fantasy Realms Soon In Thud & Blunder
February 26, 2019 by brennon
Thud & Blunder is a new Fantasy skirmish game coming soon from The Ministry Of Gentlemanly Warfare. It takes a wide approach to the Fantasy genre, offering up a toolbox of options for you to battles throughout imaginary realms.
The team behind the game have gone into detail about the game through their Blog Posts but the idea is that you can use these rules to bring to life any Fantasy world you want, focusing in properly on the narrative and expanded campaigns.
Thud & Blunder takes notes from their Blood Eagle rules but expands on them to provide you with lots of options for Fantasy games like dungeon delves, campaigns and more. Rules-wise this means that the game is easy to learn and quick to play, not getting in the way of the story and action.
With Thud & Blunder coming soon there's all the more reason to dig out those old Fantasy miniatures and start adventuring on the tabletop.
What do you think?

No qualms about another wargaming ruleset. But for me, I already have Erehwon which is good for any existing miniature line, Frostgrave, and Rangers of Shadowdeep.
If Thud and Plunder (so can see the word-play from Blood and Plunder) is an easy to learn ruleset, I think it would be a welcome addition to a growing free-flowing genre of games.
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the kind words. Btw it is Thud & Blunder, a nod to Poul Anderson’s seminal essay on Heroic Fantasy. We would never riff on another team’s book title as we would regard that as being rude.
Erewhon is a mass fantasy set, which I am yet to play, but given its heritage may come to rival Kings of War and the now deceased Warhammer, whereas this is a narrative skirmish game where you only need 5-15 figures.
In size and general scope Thud & Blunder is comparable to Joe’s excellent Frostgrave, but differs in that it is not tied to a specific setting and the core premise is different.
Cheers,
Craig
Consider my interest –like my coffee — perked. 🙂
This does sound interesting for people not happy with other game systems.
For a moment I thought it said Thrud.
Disappointed.
One of the best cartoon series ever in my ancient opinion 🙂
It sounds exactly like you could stat up Thrud and start recreating his, er, adventures.
Indeed you could without any problem whatsoever… rummages through lead pile to see if I have a Thrud model, maybe Big Boris will do?
If this is an extension of their Blood Eagle rules then definitely worth a look!
Hi CoxJul,
Each of our games is a further refinement of the last, so yes it does use the same core rules as Blood Eagle. However, there are numerous small changes to improve game play, general readability and to match the setting.
Overall it is much larger, being a 164 page book and has a number of expanded sections, and an entirely new one on ‘How to create your own warband’.
Play-testing this has been an absolute hoot 🙂
Cheers,
Craig
,,,,
My 2 youngest who were 10 and 11yrs old played this at last year’s Salute, the setting was a village with a witches cat in the middle which had to be captured for it magical powers by two opposing groups The Kings knights (my son) and the Orcs (my daughter) the game is excellent and can be used with any fantasy miniatures you may own. My kids had a ball and I’d like to thank The Ministry for Gentlemanly Warfare for looking after them during the game they were excellent, I’ll definitely be buying this when released.
Hi Sulphur,
I remember you guys, nice to hear from you!
One of the things we love about our games is that the core concepts can be picked up so quickly, especially by agile young minds, yet people say that they still have the depth than more experienced gamers want.
We shall be at Salute again this year, so if you are there please drop in and say hi.
Cheers,
Craig
Hi Craig we will definitely drop by, Lachlan and Kirsten will want to play round 2. Kirsten won last year and says she wants to wear the Hat again 🎩 , cheers see you then Kev
This looks like the masterpiece of the Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare. All the experience from IHMN, Blood Eagle and Daisho turned into open fantasy setting! Will be perfect for fast and fun skirmishes of small warbands from Middle-earth, Magnamund, Hyborian Age…
You can get better idea here: https://theministryofgentlemanlywarfare.wordpress.com/2019/01/19/a-personal-setting-for-thud-blunder/
I’me very excited about this. Been wanting a Mordheim-like generic ruleset that allows continued campaign advancement, and by the sounds of it this might be it!
We need this for sci-fi… and you’re just the chaps to do it
Well… he said, not blowing his own trumpet… there was In the Emperor’s Name, a free W40K skirmish system I released back in 2012.
As for The Ministry doing a SciFi version that is a very competitive field to wander into, with many very well supported and well established game systems already. Being very small we’ve avoided such genres and specialised in those not well trodden by the big beasts.
Fantasy is the first big genre we have set up our stall in, so we’re interested to see how well we do.
Yes, of course, ITEN. As I said, you are just the chaps to do this. There really is only the 800lb gorilla in that space, some might say Infinity as well.. but from a consumers perspective. Neither really scratch the old itch. The reborn Necromunda, comes closest, but has been completely mishandled by FW. And Kill Team is nothing more than a flashy advertisement for 40k. No thanks. Rogue Stars arguably fills the niche.. but most find the rules.. ehh.. let’s just say… “too elegant”. The upcoming title from Osprey by Joseph McGuire looks promising, but will be more “cyberpunk” than “grimdark”. Really man, I’m serious… a reborn, commercial, ITEN is needed… desperately.
At the moment we have a plan into the middle of 2020 with a couple of books a lot of people have been waiting for – if I say any more Charles will have me shot.
We have not decided on the late 2020 / early 2021 release yet. I am still of a mind to finish a 1920’s superhero game I started some years ago.
So, we shall keep that idea in mind 🙂
Now ready to be released on the 13th March 2019

Thud & Blunder is a set of generic fantasy skirmish wargaming rules from the Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare, whose authors have previously brought you In Her Majesty’s Name, Daisho and Blood Eagle.
With just five to fifteen figures a side you can play a party of brave adventurers, a knight and his retinue, a college of powerful wizards, a company of dwarven prospectors, a patrol of elven rangers, a warparty of orc raiders, a foul necromancer and his undead minions, and so many more classic fantasy warbands. The book provides numerous example warbands and all the tools you need to create almost any warband that you can imagine, including a detailed and open points system. The rules cover a wide range of armour and weapons, including magical versions. You will also find statistics for a variety of beasts and legendary beasts, rules for flyers, a comprehensive system of magical powers and much, much more.
Thud & Blunder is not tied to a specific world; this means you can play your games in any fantasy setting you choose, including realms of your own devising.
The rules are designed to be really quick to learn and fast in play. As with all our games, they are well-supported with their own dedicated Facebook page and a Blog that includes free additional material from both authors and players.
This is the skirmish game many fantasy wargamers have been waiting for; it puts the creative power in your hands.
