Dark Age Week: Faction Spotlight – The Brood

We're now going to be taking a look at The Brood and learning more about this strange species that has come to dominate as much of the Dark Age world as it can.
While Mean Jellybean might one of the stranger names out there the Brood are no trifling matter. All of them are bred to be ruthless killers.

I was initially looking at this faction and thinking, “NOPE!”
I am now re-thinking that position.
These are some pretty freaky monsters, like the fact that you have put them down and make sure they stay down!!!!

Brood was one of the first factions I looked at and I was quite taken with them and their back story. Love the little puds, imagine a horde of them running round eating everything in sight like a swarm of locusts, yum yum!!!!
Is that new Numbskull art?
The concept on these is brilliant. Some of the other models in the faction are ace- like the ratchet and pud thrower
This has always been favorite factions and hearing more o their background and play style just reinforces that
started off thinking they were a re-tread of the tyranids but the backstory & artwork really caught my imagination, so now my preferred faction is between the outcasts, the kulukani, dragyri and now the brood, it’ll soon be quicker for me to just mention the factions I don’t think I’ll choose……..
It’s mister bean to you sir, very cool faction really liking what have been seeing this week.
Back in the day, I used to collect Tyranids because I love their Giger-esque design and body horror. While the Genestealer Hybrids have a sense of character, I quickly found playing an army with the sole aim of consuming the biomass of everything it encountered pretty dull. So I approached this video liking the art design, but expecting there to be minimal backstory. Instead, we have this tale of survival against the odds and a sense of abandonment when the human creators the Brood worship began to exterminate them. It feels like a reversal of the storyline to ‘Prometheus’. Furthermore, the fact that the creatures can remember some of the repeated phrases of the humans at the biotech facility and that they have helped shaped their identity is fantastic. I think I have narrowed my choice of preferred factions to the Skaard, Dragyri, Core, and Brood. My wife wants to play the Forsaken. Fingers crossed about those prizes.
P.S. If the designers for ‘Dark Age’ haven’t seen David Cronenberg’s body horror films, I think they will love them.

The fluff of Dark age is pretty damn awesome
That’s a nice narrative twist for the Brood. It makes them a lot more interesting. Too bad the sculpts don’t really catch my interest. I like the concept art a lot better.
Maybe with resculpts and a more unified color scheme they will be a ‘good looking’ faction to play.
Always wanted to try this faction out but never did. Maybe after they get their new sculpts my resistance will finally fail.
I think I dated her once. It was during my personal Dark Age, ironically.
Not as keen on this faction, but I do like the uniqueness of them.

Mean Jellybean is a brilliant figure and name, although my favourite has to be the Puds, mouths with feet which will gnaw your legs off.
Horrifying and beautifully tragic. Pretty interesting faction.

This faction will be a nice one to fight against , cause this is exactely what my boddy looking as an army in Dark Age , cause he simply love Creepy monster that doesnt want to die , and those mini looks really nice ……. For creapy monster lovers 😉
I really like the dilemma of the Brood — so pleased their creators had returned only to find themselves fighting to survive — Probably the most interesting angle in Dark Age!

Ever since I stumbled onto Dark Age, I’ve been intrigued by this faction. Now that I know them a little better I just want to give them all a big hug!
Another great looking faction, and the backstory just adds to it.

I looked at the art for these guys and thought it was going to be another tyranid/legion style faction but that background may be my personal favorite of all those talked about so far

Heck yes! Love the backstory of this faction. I hope at some point there is a crafty human who realizes these things think he is a god and uses it to his advantage to only have the brood figure him out.

An army who regenerates, and a character called Mean Jelly Bean! What’s not to love!? And they are just poor misunderstood creatures!

This took me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting much from this video and faction but was proven wrong. The Brood have nice models and a very interesting backstory.

The brood are the tragic heroes of the world – abandoned and then feared. Love it!

Feel sorry for the Brood until they stomp and kill you.
Fun future story twist if the Outcasts play on this God-like status, take some of the brood and manipulate the relationship to use the strengths of the brood against the Forsaken?

I saw first minis on the picture and I think nice, Lovercraft monster. I started watch video. More I saw, the more associations with Mythos I had. I think this is the best faction made for Dark Ages. I’m not very familiar with this game, it is new for me, but i think that it is something fresh especially as we are looking at minifigures made by Coolminiornot. This is big change in kind of made minis. Figures look different comparing them with they boardgame figures and i like this new look.
Especialy Brood faction look great, i think it has many inspiration from Lovercraft theme like creatures from Insmouth and Cthulhu and Hydra kind. For me great minis. I want to collect more of them, maybe i also try to start playing in Dark Ages, game look interesting.

First off, love the background.. I have had a Murtros painted up and sitting on my display shelf since it first dropped years and years ago… I’m very interested in where CMON is taking the design of the Brood going forward.. although I realize it might be a while before they get some new model or new sculpts… The only figures I’m not fans of are the Broodlings… I feel like they just went more comical than the rest of the line…

“The Howler” – Could be the title of a horror film, starring a giant rubber and foam howler costume, always grinning as it terrifies a small town. LOL!
So many funny backstory elements! Lots of irony, some wacky naming, odd twists, and comical tragedy.
This video got the Brood a huge sympathy buff from my side.

CMON like their kickstarters. I can’t understand why they wouldn’t fund the new sculpts and new minis with one. It would expand the range and be an easy way to get many more people on board. Thus making it so that I could have actually got a game with all the minis I have that are sat in boxes, never having been moved in anger yet.
It’s these or the Kukulkani. The look and mechanics really appeal to me. Although the confusion at the aggression of the “Gods” aspect of their story line is one of the best twists I’ve seen in a while 🙂

I would probably paint them in a dark green with some blue and orange Spots…a little bit in disguise and a little bit toxic.
Unfortunately not the look I’d go for but it’s different to what I’ve seen so far.
