This is a pretty neat scheme that could be replicated nicely across your entire crew. Adding in that camouflage detail is certainly a trick that we're going to use on more of our miniatures!
How are you going to paint your Stargrave miniatures?

Nice models and the scheme especially the lenses look great
Second AND third…. (yes, I am that annoying today…)
Also, why isn’t the barrel drilled? *g*
’cause there’s no drill sergeant ?
ye took ma jaaab!
They are very nice models I just finished painting 5 of them as well. I did find them a little difficult to paint in all the gaps. I would suggest not gluing the arms in but just using blue tack so you can paint the body so the overlapping arms dont restrict access
Love the Camo pattern on the Fatigues
I’ve done five of these so far (they’ll dual-purpose for Stargrave and Five Parsecs) and will do five more as military. The remaining 10 I’ll do as cops/corporate security. I like the posing you’ve done (will steal).
A man after my own heart – Five Parsecs AND Stargrave. This is why I love mini agnostic games AND multi-part, mix-and-match plastic kits.
I stumbled across Five Parsecs while scouring YouTube for Stargrave content. The book arrived yesterday and looks sweet. The nice thing is the hobby effort overlaps perfectly.
Pink, we need more pink.
@johnlyons where did you get the paint pens? They look useful.
Sets I saw on amazon and ebay were bit too bright for miniature usage.
I get a very blakes 7/dalek trooper vibe from these
Nice scheme, a lot of greys but still visually interesting.
Need to try out those pens!
I wasn’t fond of the look of the troopers, to be honest. Now,you got me thinking…
Maybe I could do with a mini’or two…
Sometimes all it needs is to see someone else’s take on how to tackle a model. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve initially looked at a mini and gone “meh”, only to have someone either tweak/kitbash it or just paint it up in an unusual way to make me do a “Woah!” double-take and punish my wallet some more.
What!!!! John!!! I haven’t seen him in ages. Great to see he’s back.
I always like his tutorials.
he does a tutorial every other week, you’ve just not been paying attention 😉
great paint job.
I find the camo technique very interesting.
I will definitely take a look at these pens and whether there is a difference in point thickness in our art shop.
?? ??
I actually am painting models for stargrave so I could defo use some of these tips. Cheers John
Love the colours, love the mini. The mini reminds me of Jin-Roh
Great painting tutorial
It looks like a couple of those paint pens may be a useful addition to add to my arsenal of hobby tools.
Nice finish for a seemingly plain model
That looks like one trooper you don’t want to come across. Nice dark paint scheme!
this tutorial has some great tips, just like the Greatest movie ever made, if you ever beat up on the street remember to find a homeless karate master to train you to beat up hobos and junkies.
Contrast over the visor looks way better than I anticipated
Enjoyed this and model looks really smart. Now do 9 more…
Nice look on optics
I love the camo! The red does make it pop
Nice look on the gun optics
Wow, stargrave looks really interesting! Haven’t played Frostgrave before, but I’m gonna look into that as well now for sure.
Got to get some of those pens
Yep, stealing the pen idea!
Good job. Functionality still works in the future. Loved the pen tip for camo.
I really like the paint pen camouflage. Great idea! Thank you. I will have to give it a try.
a fantastic paint job @johnlyons the paint pens are a great addition to the painters range.
Great video from John, as usual.
I’ve always wondered about the efficacy of urban camo. But irregardless, it’s a neat looking pattern. The different shades of gray and green really do give it a nice futuristic appearance.
ANOTHER AMAZING PAINT JOB. AT AGE 68 , I’M SURE I’LL NEVER APPROACH YOUR SKILL LEVEL; BUT YOU CERTINALLY INSPIRE ME TO MAKE AN ATTEMPT. I STILL NEED TO ORDER THESE FIGURES.
Another great tutorial! +1 on the pen idea. I’m getting worse as I age with fine detail.
This was useful 🙂
I really like this camo scheme!
Great video John.
I have been looking at the pic of the spures they look great and I can’t wait to get my hands on some.
I might have to pick up some paint pens to try doing camo. I like to using a drafting pen to dot the pupils when painting eyes. Tens times easier then using a brush.
This model could be used in so many different games! A great paint job and colors that make the figure pop but also have a realistic look.
The paint pens is such a great idea! The camouflage looks very nice!
Nice to see John again sharing his advice.
I do like the idea that the equipment is mostly made using polymers over metal parts however I do feel like it could have done with some more weathering and scratches to better represent that. I do like the idea to try out paint pens. I think some people underestimate what you can do with them just because a set of brushes is more versatile
Those paintpens look interesting. I’ve been looking in liners that are used in gunpla as well if it might be a good tool for me.
Great looking camo, a very useful tip about the paint pens.
Nice!
…but, how would you paint the monkey? 🙂
Loving the amount of options these kits give, especially when they can be mixed and matched
I like the way the camo was done. I was wracking my brain how to do it and watching videos. The idea with the pen is great in my opinion.
I think I will try a variation on that but using refillable brushes.
I’ve got the mercenaries and the troopers, but I’ll exchange 1 sprue from each with a friend who got the crew box. He’ll give me two of his sprues. So we both have plenty of choice on how to build our teams. But I want to finish reading the book before deciding what I’ll build.
Does the kits come with many extras? I’ve an idea to convert some fantasy minis…
Didnt know about the pens. They look interesting.
I thought the end result was great. If you had a red pen, I think an occasional red accent would look cool with that scheme.
definately getting some of those pens.. the models are sort of soft on details so I think the edge highlighting really helps.
Nice tip using the acrylic pens.
interesting approach for sci-fi troopers. Should give the camo technique a try.
Nice prize!
John, thanks for sharing your painiting tips for this set.
Such a good tutorial!
Simple scheme but great result!
Great tutorial John! Keep up the good work.
Will be looking to paint my troopers in this scheme,as I want to try out those paint pens with maybe a different colour pallet . Red and green ,red plate and green / yellow camouflage
This could be a good scheme for me to go for, maybe a bit more blue to use for me, but based on a similar style perhaps.
Nice model and paint scheme. It wouldn’t look out of place in Mantics GCPS.
John’s painting guides are great. That camouflage looks brilliant!
I really, really like the effect that gave on the visors. I’m definitely using that for some of my troopers too
SPace camo, black with gold stars
Nice choices in color selection
This model rox!
Great tutorial, those paint pens are interesting.
The painter pens for camo is a definite new trick I’ve learned today 🙂
This is a nice tutorial
It’s gonna take me weeks to get through Stargrave week…
The trooper looks good
I’m still realtively new to minis, but these seem amazing. Definitely need to do some work on painting game to get to this level.
Nice to see anything that helps speed up painting camo…. Now if only paint pens came in tartan pattern!
I gotta find some of those pens!
Great tutorial and good camp tutorial
Those pens are great
That was helpful
Liking those paint pen`s @johnlyons, any chance the OTT store will be getting them in.
Nice paint tutorial, and one i may try out on a test mini before hand. Not sure on which faction i would go for, but i am looking at not doing a bog standard force, but a kit bash one.
The tip for the acrylic pen is great!
Those pens look useful.
I should start keeping up with 3 colours up again. Anyone know if there is a page in the site where I can just browse past episodes?
The temptation to use my Van Saar for this game is strong.
That’s some solid paintwork!
Nice job on the model and the paintjob. Loved the lens looked great!
It’s useful to see the painting tips
That was splendid paintwork
This is a very nice model
