Weekender: Myth 2.0 & Checking Out New Batman Rulebook!
March 7, 2015 by dignity
We hope you're having a great Saturday so far and the Weekender is now here to brighten your day! We've got loads to discuss including the progress on the Dropzone Commander Boot Camp!
A whole bunch of stuff has arrived in the studio including the Batman Rulebook that we'll be having a look at as well as Angel Giraldez' new painting book that is chock full of awesome tips for you masters of the brush.
As well as that we'll be discussing the changes to MYTH with their 2.0 Rules Set and the coming of a new Kickstarter campaign which takes you off to new lands in Journeyman.
Last but least we give you the heads up on the finale of oriskany's World War 2.5 article series which finished on Monday and Backstagers can download an awesome rules pack next week too to round things off!
As a final note there will be No Weekender next week as we'll be live blogging the Dropzone Commander Boot Camp instead!
Have a great gaming weekend!

WHAM!! POW!!@#!@##!
Come on guys, stop teasing. I’m waiting for my Joker rule book to be delivered.
I want to see what model John chooses to paint and how close he can get to replicating the model. So looking forward to this.
Happy Weekend!!!
Fully agree about WW2.5
John doing Angel method, sounds like a good idea, show the difference from armour to artistic and the transferable skills. Will be a good series of videos.
Agreed. I often wonder how easy it would be to follow the idealised techniques of any masterclass. I got my copy yesterday and after a quick browse a lot of this looks doable and it then becomes a matter of skill/finesse on top of the technique.
As well as John giving this a go I’d love to see Romaine also pick a model from the book with techniques different from his usual (pre-shading with airbrush?) and see what he makes of it.
go for it john.
Patton was a straight talker in an era where the more career oriented generals tended to be sensitive to political connotations, but he scared Hitler so much that he was used as the decoy that kept the bult of the German armour facing the Pas de Calais when Overlord went into Normandy. Hitler refused to accept that the real invasion had begun, giving the allied forces time to establish a foothold that would otherwise have been much more tenuous – there was even a realistic prospect of the invasion failing if a certain E. Rommel has been allowed to do what he wanted with those panzer divisions.
That June Bootcamp – has to be WWX.
Keep up the good work and YES to the idea of John painting a step by step from the A-Z book!!
Happy Saturday guys. This time next week i will be in Coleraine eating my hangover breakfast 🙂
Forgot to say the world war 2.5 series has been great it should be published in some form or another.
Oh so close now.
I hope you get the opportunity to do more than one table for the BMG week. Whilst a Nolan-inspired game would be cool, a straight up normal city table seems like a bit of missed opportunity to do a characterful Gotham.
We foundered on the rocks and cards of Myth two sessions in and have never been back (and that includes using the BGG re-written book). Hopefully a re-written set of each sorts the game out, though at least in the cards I hope it doesn’t mean having to buy a new product just to be able to play the game.
Perhaps an environment somewhere between keaton’s and bale’s eh?
The really dark gothic (with neon) but the more modern characters with in it?
Personally I would like to do the zoo/penguins hideout 😉
I’m doing a fairground set. Its in the forums under Gotham Screamland.
Apparently there will be a level in the new Kickstarter to get printed versions of the 2.0 rulebook & cards, that should just cover the cost of printing & shipping….
I would like to see John follow Angel’s book, but I would want to see him paint the model without following the book as a baseline. Then paint a second copy of the model while following the book step by step. Afterwards, compare the two to see how John’s approach to painting changed and have him talk about the differences between his approaches between his current style and his adaptations using Angel’s style.
One more excellent episode of the weekender. Please have John paint Angel Hiraldes style, I’d absolutely follow that series!
Why not do a combo of a Batman week leading up to a Batman Boot Camp? Have it in the autumn, so I can have a shot at a ticket (my spring and summer is to full of other stuff).
Good luck with your preparations for Dropzone Commander! Why not do some Vlogs too from the weekend or maybe some live streaming?
If it gets John into Infinity brilliant – maybe more content for the game? SF game of the year deserves a batrep or two.
A great idea! Please!
I’m all for John doing Angel
Regards MYTH 2.0: The Kickstarter certainly won’t be getting many returning backers if Megacon insist on updates like the latest to whose who backed their RECON campaign. Nothing about the actual status of the project, instead informing us about the situation at the West Coast ports in the US and then asking us to back the MYTH: Journeymen campaign on Monday. This is after missing their last promised deadline for an update when the previous had them still waiting revisions to the minis, so no hope of making their April shipping date. Then in the comments, when people called them on the nature of the update there were a lot of posts from Megacon that boarder on the rude & arrogant. The last one that stated that “I have a bunch of stuff I can share and will begin to do so…maybe this weekend if PAXeast will let us” really makes us wonder WHY they didn’t post some of this then, rather than such a perfunctory update.
All of us who have backed their projects appreciate that they are a small team, but given how badly they managed to get things wrong with shipping MYTH to their international backers, and the lack of meaningful updates to RECON, coupled to their (seemingly) taking any criticism as an attack, Megacon really need to consider investing in a dedicated community manager, someone who can take comments & queries on the chin and respond in a professional manner.
And if it sounds like I’m ragging on Megacon, I’m trying really hard not to. I adore the product I got for backing MYTH, and have been chomping at the bit to get RECON, but they really don’t do themselves any favours sometimes….
I couldn’t have put it better. I’ve given up trying to defend them on the forums: they need to step up from the ” but I’m trying my hardest Mom, can I have some more pocket money” stance, (usually followed by “thanks for that Mom… oh by the way, I may have been in a bit of trouble I haven’t told you about yet”).
I’m not in a rush to receive Recon tbh, plenty of things on the go, in the queue and also incoming (GB). Might spend a bit on Myth 2.0, but mostly just to fix what I’ve got from Myth 1.
Another good weekender
Must catch up on the WW2.5 stuff sounds interesting…time to watch Paxton again.
Definitely get John to try and do the techniques from the book…be a laugh to see if Romain could do the same…lol
Really looking forward to getting my Joker book and model.
Be good to see John follow the Angel style.
I think John following the ‘Angel Method’ is a great idea- can see folks at home following along too, then everyone can share their results at the end!
Got to agree with the points made above by others regarding Myth- great game, but my confidence in MGC is not so great… If the new KS has hard copies available of the 2.0 rules and cards I may go in for those, though seems a shame to have to fork out more cash to ‘fix’ my copy… But I guess that’s my fault for not being a fan of the whole digital thing! 🙂
Looking forward to the live blog next weekend- I work 6 out of every 7 Saturdays so unless the stars are right I might never get to go to a Bootcamp, but at least I can live vicariously through the blog! If WWX is planned for June though then I may just have to take the week off to make sure I can get there…
First of all congratz with your son’s birthday Warren. Nice weekender again and a great book of Knightmodels. Would love to see you guys build a table for it and play test the game.
It is a good idea to let John follow the techniques Angel is using and see how far he gets on the looks. That will show if the book is good.
You guys have earned your £3.79 this month by saying “surround sound” alone, never mind all the awesome gaming content.
Gotta love that Irish accent.
Johns idea is great. I’d go for the Gecko tag myself, but there is a wide variety of stuff in there.
Big thumbs up from me for Johns painting series.
Received my copy of Angel’s book this morning, I’m really loving it.
I like to see what John can do when he gets inspired bij Angel.
Awesome Weekender !
Please, please do the Angel painting tutorial. It’s the one part of the hobby I love. Watching someone else paint is always educational.
John’s idea of painting tutorial from Angles book sounds awesome bring it on 🙂
Also reading Angel’s book today and looking forward to trying some of this out,
I’ll add in another yes to Johns painting endeavor. Though if he wants to try and replicate one of the minis from the book, why not try the Joan of Arc mini that came with the book?
Happy Birthday to your young lad Manny. Thanks for another great show.
Another great episode on Books of War. lol . Really like the Vlogs this week , hope this can become a regular feature . And yes agree that John should try his hand at Angel’s style
Yeehaaa! Nice one, Warren. 🙂
I was surprised Justin didn’t jump off his seat right there.
Yes, I want to see the John painting like Angel video(s). Currently I’m still waiting for my book to arrive. Looking forward to try some of the techniques myself. Although I’m still unsure about getting an airbrush and which one to get if I am getting one.
Warren, thanks for the awesome response to my post about a BMG week. Hell Yeah!!!
Fantastic to hear you guys are excited as I am about it. Keep up the great work. That would be so kick ass if you can get the Knight Models guys in the studio.
Lets see:
Yes, John should do the Angel tutorial series.
Man I would love to have a Batman group in my area.
Why can’t you have a US based BoW Boot Camp?
I want the “What if…” rules for WWII Where are they?
Regarding Megacon games…
I have been tempted to get into MERCs for a while…got some rulebooks during their Xmas sale but then I noticed how little (read:none) support that game line is getting.
on the boards Megacon states that MYTH hasn’t taken any resources away from MERCS but that is simply untrue…the last MERCS update was the November holiday sale. MYTH has had many many updates including a 2.0 rulebook AND another kickstarter. MERCs 2.0 rulebook has been pushed back and no one seems to know when it is coming out.
as I said to Megacon…if you aren’t willing to support MERCS then how do you expect potential new players to support the game?
I’m not a gamer myself either. My memory is apalling to the extreme and wargames often have a lot of rules. To put things into perspective, I often have to leave notes for myself to remind myself to eat and drink.
Also I just can’t read rulebooks, manuals ect – I can only learn things that are more practical, which is why I love sculpting, painting and all that stuff. Perhaps oneday I will find someone that is willing to teach me in that sort of way, allthough they’d probably have to be up for a challenge.
Big thumbs up for the idea of John’s painting series based on the Ángel Giráldez book! Some of those images look awesome, it would be great to see how John could replicate those results. 😀
I love how you say “How” while I’m sat here thinking “if” :p
Cant see the video on this page 🙁
I received Angel’s book last week. I definitely want to see John try and paint a model using the steps in the book. As a relative new painter (been painting mini’s for a year), I am highly disappointed in the content of the book. I hope my skills improve to the point where I can get use from it. This isn’t a tutorial at all … rather a recipe. I expected him to discuss his techniques and how he achieves the results he does. Instead it strikes me as step1 mix these paints and paint the model. Step 2 mix these paints and paint the model….
On the surface this book’s production value is off the charts. A simple flip through the book makes you excited at all the pretty, very detailed pictures. It’s only after you sit down and actually read the content that you realize how little is actually here.
My opinion is probably not going to be a popular one. Maybe people like me weren’t the target audience (and I can accept that)
Regardless, I’d love to see John follow the steps on camera and fill in what I perceive as gaping holes in this “tutorial” for the mortal painters wanting to improve their techniques.
Well 1st there’s the language barrier, He is from Spain after all, but then its a book, not a video. So maybe check out Romain’s 3 color up vids for idea’s, they are as the Brit’s say”Crackin”…..
+1 on the “John learning Angel’s techniques” videos. As a competent tabletop standard painter who is in a bit of a rut, I’d love to see this. I look at the “competition ” standard painters with skepticism and really don’t feel like like the bother is practical, but I’m willing to be persuaded otherwise, particularly if its John who has all the stress! 🙂
Looking forward to the bootcamp blog next week. As a dropzone neophyte I’m hoping for some tips!
I got my copy of the Masterclass book a couple of days ago. I would be interested in seeing what John does with it.
Great idea for John. Interested to see how well Angel translates page to brush.
Nolans’ batman is based in Chicago as Gotham not New York Warren.
Another Excellent weekender!
I would also like to see John follow Angel’s painting instructions and see the results.
While Patton is a great movie and the quote is true, their are a lot of inaccuracies in the rest of the movie. I don’t mean the equipment type either, although those are plentiful they were part of the time. People have come to identify George C. Scott as Patton because of the Movie. Patton actually had a high pitched and squeaky voice. That is minor a point. He was not relieved in Italy for striking a single soldier but several. He was undoubtedly one of the best combat commanders in the US Army. The film has a bit of cold war propaganda value to it that we forget about now a days rather than being strictly biographical.
Could not have said it better myself about the Patton movie.
Of course the movie itself was awesome. You can’t argue against any movie that won SEVEN academy awards (even though George C. Scott famously refused to accept his award for Best Actor).
But the way it portrays Patton is, well . . . a little off. This is especially crucial for two reasons. One, the movie was so successful it’s become the cultural “standard” for how Patton is inaccurately regarded in our collective memory, and two . . . this unwarranted level of accolade comes at the expense of too many other better American generals who deserve more credit for the battles Patton “won.” But I’ve already worn out a few keyboards driving home on this point on other blogs, threads, etc.
Sticking with movies, perhaps as a gauge of just how powerful the “George C. Scott” lens really is, consider two other historical portrayals that Scott did later in life. It might help to put his performance in “Patton” into better focus.
1) The Last Days of Patton: A early-80s made-for-TV sequel that picks up where the movie Patton leaves off. It shows his promotion to four-star general, work as the military governor of Bavaria and command of the 15th Army. Of course it also shows his stormy relationship with Eisenhower (you never “see” him in the original film), members of Eisenhower’s staff, Patton’s wife, his perhaps-too cozy relationship with former members of the SS, vindictiveness, hubris, pride, delusions, and other nastier sides of his personality. On the plus side, it also shows Patton’s really important contributions to the developing American tank corps during the 1920s and early 30s (something the original movie completely leaves out). Of course, because Patton’s wife is a main character, you get the perspective of a loving person who only sees the best parts of the man, as well. In all, I think it’s much more realistic (and balanced) view of Patton.
2) Mussolini: The Untold Story. George C. Scott played Mussolini in a 1980s TV miniseries. George C. Scott does such an amazing job, and makes the character so likable and easy to relate to, that by the end of the miniseries you’re almost thinking Benito Mussolini was a sympathetic man, a loving father, an unfortunate victim of history, and perhaps . . . the leader Italy needed during chaotic and uncertain days.
And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is what can happen to your image when George C. Scott plays you in a movie. Mussolini was actually a good leader. Now draw you own conclusions about the 1970 film: Patton.
YEEEE HAAAA….. mite as well say WWX!!!!
OOOOHHHH, and Tank God vs InfinityPaint God…. how cool is that????
I would like to take the painting challenge a step further. John paints the mini in his “own style”…and then paints it according to the tutorial. So we will not only see how much he came up to Angel…we will see if and how much better the miniture looks in comparison to his “old” technique…I find that more important than comparing to Angel. What do you think?
Excellent show chaps. Looking forward to the XLBS!
John’s idea is great, go for it. Can’t wait for my copy to arrive.
I think the Batman: Miniatures Game board/layout sounds good. Why not have a Batman Bootcamp; may be attendees could dress up as their favourite Batman character!
Any chance of an Infinity or Zombicide Bootcamp?
great weekender guys, the batman stuff is interesting, will be great to see johns painting, oriskanys posts are very interesting and make you think of some battles in a different angle.
I love everything that you guys do. You work so very hard each and every week to bring us the latest and greatest in gaming. I would love to see John paint the Joan of Arc that should have come with the pre-ordered copy of Angel’s Book. The other mini I would love to John paint would be Tarik Mansuri. The book has great step by step for each of these model. Most importantly have fun John.
John yes do it! that would be amazing to see the results you get from Angel’s book. 😀
Good lord! No pressure then! Haha! I plan to pick a model from the book that appeals the most to me. So I will be going through them all and finding the one that “gets me going” so to speak. Even if it requires some conversion work. Either way, yes I will have fun and it will be a real “journey” for me, I mean come on, NO PIGMENTS! That’s what I do!!
Great stuff! Looks like @johnlyons is definitely going to be doing the paint-in-Angel’s-style series, but it’s another +1 from me, and yet another spur to get into airbrushing for me.
I’m not a huge comic fan, but loved the Nolan Batman movies and have a copy of the game on order – the minis and the book look so good, I thought I really couldn’t pass this up… So pleased you’re doing a Nolan-esque board. Will see if I can make something similar!
Yep, we want John to paint more 🙂 Not only AT-AT’s
YES! Let John do it!
I’d love to see how a book like that influences painting, before deciding if i’ll get one myself
Would love to see John painting a model using Angels techniques.
I absolutely love Batman the miniatures game………another great weekender!
“John that tutorial is a terrible idea” said no one… ever. 🙂
John… just do it!
I’ll also be taking one of the models from Angels book and doing what your proposing as soon as i get my copy of the book in hand.
It will be a great chance to see how good he can teach (and to a lesser degree we can learn) his technique
PLEASE DO IT!
/bef
Good work guys. Go John, show us what you can do.
Really keen to see what you guys can do with Batman too.
im going to have to board out my loft because of all the batman terrain ideas i have in my head!! running monorail?…… XD
