Happy Sunday!! I’m excited to see how the free-form improv show goes with no running order… 🙂
so were we, it as a Bill O’Reilly moment, “we’ll do it live!”
It felt a lot like the XLBS of not long ago when I first found BoW. Free flowing conversation about gaming and hobby by three gamers alternately grousing, laughing and harassing each other. Good times, good times…
I’m stopping now before I start telling stories about walking uphill both ways. 😉
10 miles uphill to school everyday, and 15 miles uphill back home, barefoot
…in the snow… I had to wake up 3 hours before I went to bed, just so I could get there on time.
eeeh luxury
Always a great show when these three are teamed up in a relaxing Sunday format.
Great to have Lloyd back in front of the camera instead of chained to the computer in the office all the time.
My 1870’s British Army always gets excited when Gerry starts talking Rorke’s Drift.
Nice to be out and about 🙂
As an old Geezer myself I can already tell this XLBS is going to be the Dogs B@#$!(*s.
Loved this format, reminds me of the old days, great work guys.
Morning all, Happy Sunday!
Hmm … you know … this isn’t the first time @warzan has been made into a 2D commander.
Fantastic show guys.
@avernos I’d love to see some Rorke’s Drift coverage. Men Who Would Be Kings is a fantastic game, I’d really like to see the changes you made. I’ve been using Men Who Would Be Kings for some games set in the Sudan during 1884-5 and really enjoying it. It would be really cool to see some Colonial coverage this year.
@warzan Lindybeige has a brilliant video on halberds and you’re basically right about how they are used. Smithing is a lot of fun (I’ve been an amateur smith for a few years now) you’ll love it just for goodness sake make sure you don’t instinctively try to catch a falling piece of hot metal, neither the piece or the floor will get hurt and you can save yourself a nasty injury. Just remember what people call Damascus Steel nowadays is NOT Damascus steel it’s Folded Steel or Wootz Steel, Damascus Steel was high quality steel and higher quality steel actually doesn’t need to be folded.

I’m a big fan of using coins as bases (5 Cent Coins here in Australia are slightly smaller than 20mm) mainly for the cost but adding that extra weight is very nice.
@lloyd There is a LOTR conversion for Saga floating around somewhere although I believe it’s for last edition. Bong67 posted the links.

Cheers, after mulling it over for a while I think I may do it in a project. It’s too long for one article and I don’t think there is enough for a full series. But I’m thinking to break it down to development and scenario mechanics, reconstructing the drift, painting and basing the minis. Finally I’ll throw up the two sets of army cards and possibly a link to my one drive if people want to download them.
If I can, I’ll add a battle report in sometime in March once the game as been played, I found an online program called Chronicler to let you do the maps and unit movement. Anyway, that’s my thoughts.
It also means people wanting to chip in with advice or questions can ask in a specific part of the project so it doesn’t get missed out.
Class link @elessar2590 I will definitely give the boards a good look over 🙂
To give him his due It was Gerry liking the Flatpack on Facebook that made me aware of them
The video on the post from Wofun has other periods
Until I saw that title card I didn’t know how much I wanted to see the guys recreate the end credits of dad’s army….
My pyro license is still valid if you want some morters setting off ?
we’ve not had a mortar party here since the good friday agreement, come on over Tim and we’ll supply the calor gas
Happy Sunday!
Three part cape lol @warzan It’s the same weird move as with the Stormcast Eternals’ pauldrons which came in two parts with the joints in the middle. I suppose they were to be smooth for the decals. No idea why they do some stuff the way they do.
I should have added earlier that I think Peter Dennis of paperboys has been talking to the guys at flatpack so something interesting might happen there
The types of images you want for a more stylised type of figure is maybe from the old classic illustrated
Supreme Littleness is a great company as well.
@warzan I’ve been marathoning Forged in Fire off of the History Channel – something incredibly therapeutic about watching folks try to make weapons with odd materials and then have three experts test them to destruction…..
Happy Sunday!
Warren’s new management song, courtesy of Bjork (Army of Me – Post 1995):
Stand up
You’ve got to manage
I won’t sympathize
Anymore
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
You’re alright
There’s nothing wrong
Self sufficiency please!
And get to work
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
You’re on your own now
We won’t save you
Your rescue squad
Is too exhausted
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
I must admit I do like this format for XLBS 😀
I suspected the millenials would run out of topics/steam/both before too long 😉
😀
I do find the debates interesting but this format is more entertaining!
I imagine it will be a rare thing to just wing it, I blame the holidays, Big Talk will be resumed shortly.
Great shows guys a hobby time catchup is always a welcome event at the weekend. Some Rorkes drift action sounds fun
I shall do my best
Happy Sunday. Keep the grumpy old sods, Sunday mornings need more laughter.
You should do these more often.
I love hearing you guys talking hobby and throwing ideas around.
Ummm… Not been active for a couple of weeks, but how come some people’s posts appear using real name while others are username?
It’s an option on the profile. If people didn’t change it themselves it may be the result of tinkering
Been round and round my profile but can’t find the appropriate setting…
go to profile and change “real name” to your screen name and see what that does for you. I’m sure there had been two separate fields for those before.
Absolutely fantastic XLBS <3 It might just be me having a thing for old, grumpy guys (I do have a hot spot for trolls after all), but I just loved watching you guys talking about Saga and bases and Rourke's drift and everything, and just relaxing and having a great time. But then, I'm an old crone myself :p
glad you enjoyed it, see the homework makes sense now ^^
I don’t think old crone is appropriate, that makes you sound like you’re asking huntsmen to cut out the heart of snow white. I will say every time I thought I had a more appropriate term, I quickly realised it was less appropriate. 😀
Grumpy gal perhaps 😉
Yes! I’m so happy I got my homework done before watching this weekender 😀 Grumpy Gal it is <3
Lina you will never, ever be grumpy 😉
I don’t know why that made me smile big time, but it did 🙂 Thanks @buggeroff <3 That said, get me ranting on christmas…poor @avernos' 'ears' have aleeady been abused on that account :).
I was happy to listen to someone with the same feeling I do about chrimbletide 😉
Lots of good hobby inspiration in this, cheers! Very keen on Saga myself and looking forward to the Fantasy edition. Have to grab the book of battles too. So many half finished armies waiting in the wings. Great idea and executing for the javelins. I might go down that route for my Achaemenid cavalry since it has been nagging me too that they only carry one projectile each.
I think Fantasy is going to be amazing, I’ve so many minis I’ve collected over the years that don’t have a home… well they do now 🙂
Get the book of battles asap, like I said even if you don’t play saga the material in that would keep any gamer going for years.
Hi @subedai, for the javelins – stick 3 bits of rod together, once dry get a strip of masking tape the height you want and sort of rap/roll the 3 rods in it with a little over lap at the bottom which you pinch.
Then just spread super glue over it to make it hard 🙂
rap/roll the 3 rods in it with a little over lap at the bottom which you pinch.
Then just spread super glue over it to make it hard ?
@lloyd I’m so glad I know what your on about and not just taking it out of context… ?
reading it back = lol
I did not tune in this morning expecting to see Warren playing with his tiny Johnston! Given the existence of Paper Mario, I wonder if a wargame could be designed around the idea that the soldiers actually are 2.5D?
I’m sure it could be, I know one designer who is keen to embrace them. Like everything the context and what you want to achieve will define how successful it is. Imagine a game of Bolt Action where you add facings, so you have to be square on to fire, but if you’re 90 degrees and the thin edge is showing you get an additional modifier to be hit because they’ve fired at a smaller target ^^
Don’t think this comment will be beaten, lol
Happy Sunday all!
Lloyd and Gerry on screen… we knew there was Saga coming 😉
Content suggestion – Old Gits random XLBS once a month 🙂
you had no proof we would mention Saga!
Was I wrong? 😛
you were not sir, you were not.
Great show. Loving the Saga chat. Need to get that battle book.
2d standie armies look great and fast to get playing. Trouble is that once you have started playing a system with minis, standies will never look right mixed with or against your standard mini collection. For a new game, that you can’t spend a ton of money or time on, solid quality colour standies like these would be an awesome option.
Hope you all had a great new year.
I had my car stolen on Boxing day and have a stinking cold. But at least my missing rules and cards from Here’s Negan has been resolved and can’t wait to get a game of that played.
Big love to OnTableTop and thanks for my recent Golden Button. ?
well that sounds like a shite end to 2018, let’s hope 2019 kicks off on a better run for you matey.
I know what you mean about mixing the standies, I’ve got several BA armies, and I’ve been loathe to start anymore, but I do love the idea of getting a set of the US airborne as a cheap bought and done alternative.
Great show this morning, most entertaining. Ben wasn’t looking himself this morning, very quiet and very very pale.
an a lot quieter than usual
Hobby! Coffee! Video!
read you later.
@avernos we fly in the morning of the 21st (Thursday) and leave the 25th (Monday). I am so excited to play this. This will be one of my highlights for 20119!
I was close then 🙂 So Sunday 24th seems like a good day for it then, requires nothing except to show up and play.
Fantastic! Rereading Washing of the Spears to prepare. Should I bring my Saga Warband just in case?
I think I speak for @lloyd as well when I say, always.
With work and the holiday stuff, this is the first show I’ve watched since the start of decmeber I think.
Just wanted to say thanks, great video and a great way to destress on a Sunday.
you will insist on pillaging over the christmas period. pffft! typical viking 😉
Enjoy your Sunday.
It was Baaaaaad…. hmm…. a shaun the sheep miniature game… hm….
Think for yourselves Sheeple! Resist!!
😀
hmm…. shaun the sheep miniature game with Paranoia rules? hmm…..
sheepbots!
Final boss for a campaign: the big knitting machine. “Operation clean shave”
happy Sunday, thanks for the show.
Happy Sunday, excellent show gentlemen loved watching how you three just kept bouncing ideas about you should do this free wheeling type of weekender at least once a month??. The flat pack forces look just class very much easy way of getting big battles going, might be good for battlegroup???
Lock the millenials up, best XLBS for a while with 3 grumpy old men. Great show guys.
Happy Sunday … a little late in the day but finally got around to watching (a very busy day today) but have to say its the best XLBS for ages, more of the BoW three stooges 🙂
Cracking XLBS! Lloyd has some nice conversions there.
Really enjoyed the show today guys. Good to see you back in the old setting and to have Lloyd back in the mix.
It was actually recorded early last year and only now put out.. hence the set and the Lloyd
not going to lie, i enjoyed this XLBS much more than the new “pick a topic” XLBS’s. more of these please 😀
@warzan I think you’re missing something with the 2d minis. How about black and white, film noir comic style, 2d minis for games like Pulp Alley or 7TV or Batman! Use actual comic book games for the comic style minis!
Happy Sunday, love the new logo. Keep this format, but let one snowflake in once in a while just to kick his cockiness. Now I know what brown sauce is for, tks. Lloyd. Sending Warren out to forge 28mm spears is a great idea.
Brown sauce is really tasty and not just good for polishing pennies
Agreed can’t have a bacon butty with out some brown sauce (HP is my sauce of choice).
but of course
you pronounced that wrong mate, it’s HP, not HP
Well chaps, I really had a nice Sunday morning, we should do this again some time.
Very enjoyable show guys, more of this content.
Happy Sunday every one.
The most enjoyable XLBS for ages. Cheers guys
Good show that, nice to just let people enthuse about their hobby at leisure without needing to fit around anything else.
Might be nice to see other team members given a shot at doing something similar in a few weeks actually.
Great XLBS chaps, definitely considering a trip over to play @avernos’s Rorkes Drift. Always thought that looked like an amazing game
well I believe based on Gianna’s timescales it will be 24th Feb which is a Sunday. I’ve started a project log on the run up as I aim to get everything as close as I can to accurate, for a given value of accurate…let’s call it “movie accurate”.
Love to see you over again, it’s a good way to ward off demons and shit!
Re. “Demons and shit”. A solid round of good old volley fire is probably the only way to be sure! Thanks for the details, Ill check out the project and look into some flights.
Those flats would mske for a really great bootcamp, turn up punch out youvarmyvsnd your a way , plus getting it home would be a doddle.
I agree, but isn’t the fun of a bootcamp getting a stack of toys, sitting around, building and painting and chatting (sorry meant bitching ;))
There always a down side.
I usually watch the weekender’s in instalments over the week. Sat and watched the whole thing in one hit today. Great show really enjoyed it and your right about the Saga book of Battles it’s a proper steal.
I’m always right, except when I’m wrong 😉
Glad you enjoyed it
Fun show to kick off 2019. Looking forward to seeing what you guys have in store for us.
From another grumpy old gamer, I really enjoyed this one! You guys need to get together on a regular basis to do shows.
Great Show guys – I’m definitely making the trip up for the Rorke’s Drift battle so keep us posted!
looks like 24th Feb matey
Another Gerry’s Rorkes Drift extravaganza… The last one was a blast!! That was a very long day, but what a day, so much fun 😀
I’m not letting them film every two minutes this time, so may even get two games in, get people to switch sides 😀
If I remember correctly delay was with the zulus faffing about 😉
that an a frightening amount of filming.
Only problem with this weeks show, was shouldnt have tried to watchit whilst making e-boats, too many belly laughs and then srchs for bits on floor.
@warzan – have you seen the MDF space ship game from TTcombatt called space swarm – 4 fleets from under £15 from memory. By themselves they were amazing and I was upset when they bought dropfleet as I dont think they will continue that, however that, coloured would be amazing…
Great show chaps 😀 .Do the millenials really have to be allowed back….. 😛
This is the type of XLBS that we want… well every once in awhile 🙂 I do miss the random romps through the hobby.
Gen X for the win!
Great show guys as usual! I like the old guy show being an old guy my self. Only thing missing was a few well timed farts on camera!
By the way my wife Veronica (the Coleraine native), nearly wet herself laughing at the poo story @warzan
Cheers!
SWEET MERCIFUL BUDDHA, NOOO @warzan! Avoid the liquid greenstuff for your figure. You’ve gone mad… if you’re that mad hit up Frank Miller for that 300 setup.
Love Supreme Littlenes – I picked up some of their building sets for my 3mm stuff
Worth the price of admission for Captain Doo-Dah alone.
It’s rare to see someone more p|ssed off with GW than the Squirrel-Who-Walks.
None of us know who you mean.
None-of-us, none-of-us, none-of-us…
Good stuff guys. Board games and vidya games is all very well, but give me a few old farts chuffing on about mini wargames hobby stuff and banter any, and every day of the week. Worth this month’s subscription all on its own!
I wouldn’t use liquid green stuff, you open the pot and 2 minutes later the whole pot is dry. It’s just a waste of money. I would recommend the Vallejo Plastic Putty preferably the one in the tube not in the dropper bottle.
I second that vote. I’ve been using that stuff for some time now and it makes filling small gaps a breeze.
Loved this show, so much more fun to watch than the newer format. I enjoy the debate style but this feels much more like the laidback, backstage version of the weekender that you have on whilst you hobby.
I hate multi part capes, and mould lines that run at random angles across capes.
Good going lads. You’re talking a ton of shit here. Exactly what I need with a massive flight delay.
Also good to hear Rorke’s Drift is due a revisit. If I ever get some momentum behind my Zulu project I’ll have one.
Belated Happy Sunday! Fantastic stuff as ever, good to just see some deep chat into hobby fun.
I do love with the flat standees how the finished art can just look lovely so quickly, especially compared to my typical paint job!
