It’s the XLBS SHow! Happy Sunday fellow CoG’s!
(and the show begins with mirth and merriment)
I love the way the OTT Team gets along and feels so relaxed with one and another that they can mess with each other even when getting ready to film a show that ‘Millions’ will be watching! 🙂
Happy Sunday!!!
Happy Sunday!
From an ex boy scout and cadet who spotted Semaphore a mile off once he got around to Warren’s code last week… Definitely a try harder!
@warzan Cathars are generally believed to be a peaceful bunch. However there are some hooks for your setting.
Where they disagreed with mainstream Christian’s is in their belief in two gods, one good and one evil.
Want to tie it in some more? Catharism is believed to have originated in the Aremenia/Byzantine region. So your Rangers could be the Ottoman sent to restore balance which was lost when the french Cathars were purged and, evil forces disturbed by the Cathar’s beliefs have grown left uncontrolled.
Region wise, think the East Pyrenees up through Carxassonne to Albi. Very hilly with lots of ruined castles/forts and villages where the disturbed forces of evil are emerging. Used to holiday in that region, absolutely ideal setting for something like this.
If you read Kate Mosse’s Labyrinth trilogy you’ll get a bit of fictionalised background.
@brendon, she’s not busty… ‘she’ has got to snuggle her nuts somewhere!
I think others in the class are being very cruel about your passion for small cuddly, furry animals. I’ll be having words with their parents about the Freudian undertones of them constantly going on about their ‘toy soldiers’, especially Warren’s about his belief that the smaller the better.
I think it’s adorable, just so long as to you grow out of it before big school… Oh… hang on!
@warzan Riddle solve btw
Great show guys.
@warzan Hundred Years War, strap in brother.
Rangers definitely existed they would have been called Yeomen and would have functioned sort of like the Rangers act with the Shire, they keep pests out of the woods, they hunt game, they keep the roads safe and they generally just keep the peace.
I think you’re a tad off on your view of the Religion of the time. This is about a Century before Luther would shatter Christianity into tens of thousands of different factions. The whole “Bring on the End Times” is a much more Modern Evangelical idea and ironically a very popular idea in Islam (although I can’t speak of how they felt back at the time but definitely today it’s very popular) than a medieval Catholic one. This is the Age of Aquinas resurrecting and incorporating the Aristotelian Logic into Catholicism not the Age of the Tambourine Playing “Everyone be Happy” Boomers of our times.
The Dominicans were pretty famous as Inquisitors so Paint a mini in Black and he’d make a great “Ranger” stand in. Remember kids you were so much better off in the hands of an Inquisitor than being arrested by your local “Police/Guards”. The Inquisitor at least had to put you on Trial and could only have you tortured (by the Local Noble) once while the local Noble could just outright kill you with zero proof and unlimited torture, believe it or not the Inquisition was the first step on the road to due process, still not great due process though.
Ah the Cathars. They thought God was the Devil, they saw the world as evil and since the God of the old Testament created the World therefore the Devil. They were completely out of their minds and rebuked by all the philosophers at the time so they got “dealt with” pretty “permanently” just before the First Crusade. To be fair the Pope really tried to convert them but they kept murdering his priests and once they killed his personal emissary that was the last straw.
Love it! – Ok so a rethink is in order based on this 🙂
The Cathar Crusade washt until the early 1200’s if I remember correctly and then your into Holy Blood and the Holy Grail Territory
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Holy_Blood_and_the_Holy_Grail
Further to the West from Gascony you have the massive forests round Limoge which are still there and if course with the Cathars your into the Languedoc region at the base of the Pyrenees so some nice hily and mountainous terrain for creatures to hide in
@torros thanks for the correction. I got it mixed up with the “People’s Crusade”.
Joan of Arc comes at the end of the Hundred Years War in the early 1400’s so you’re properly in to the era of Full Plate and Shining Armour.
There were plenty of Heretics and “Cults” still around by the time of Joan of Arc, the 15th-16th Century is the peak of Clerical nonsense where the Church basically lost control of it’s Clerics (thanks in part to Lazy Bishops and the Holy Roman Empire) and guys like Hus and Luther emerged so lots to work with.
Milan got so bad there was a saying “Want to go to Hell? be a Priest”
@elessar2590 I think I remember a few years go that dont think there was ever a peoples crusade. It was just propaganda that was announced from the pulpit and that if you couldn’t ho on the crusade yourself you could give money. That might be all wrong though and I’m thinking of something else
I’ve heard the same thing but the evidence is pretty overwhelming. Whether or not it can be called a crusade is a bit sketchy but three things aren’t.
1. They gathered in Central Europe where they Massacred a whole lot of Jews.
2. They Showed up outside Constantinople.
3. The Emperor sent them to Asia.
All the stuff about fighting and leadership is a bit sketchy but there was a gathered group of people heading towards the Holy Land calling themselves Crusaders.
Fight or Pay was more of a Slogan than a rule, for someone as insanely wealthy as a Medieval Noble a few hundred pieces of Gold would have been pocket change given pretty willingly to get rid of the Medieval equivalent of the Red Cross Door Knockers.
Happy Sunday Everyone! FYI RoSD Mission one text can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RuWlf4_t6Iel27CzMvCZSYuRiGKgkO6-oapQs2kBmUc/edit
With your talk of atmospheres in The Martian it reminds me I was reading the other day that the earths magnetic field is weakening especially between South Meruxa and Afica which could start to affect the orbits of satellites and space craft
Happy Sunday @warzan. Sorry but Code busters is solved this week (and I was first!!)
With the “Slouch hate up in combat” I will buy a carton of Beer to anyone who can find me pics of Australian Infantry (Not Support Weapons but actual Riflemen) in combat wearing any kind of slouch hat in the WWII Desert because I’ve not ever seen anyone wearing it beyond Crewed Weapons. That being said it didn’t stop me doing a Company of 28mm Aussies in slouch hats.
Best thing about Dave Graffam models is the layer options you get so you can make similar buildings all look different
That Sepia wash sounds like the Vallejo Black shade wash which is so black I’m convinced is made a liquid dark matter
Happy Sunday!
The ‘light Stick’. The greatest invention since the wheel!
Epic!
illuminate
lomos (flick and swish)
Easy there gandalf
Warren
For your game, use the spider bases from mythic battles set
Remember with soldering, the bigger the glob the better the job.
You’re barred. Get out 😉
Let the lunacy of XLBS begin.
Thank you Warren for activating google on my phone
Remember, it’s always listening…
Did the Templars get disbanded or did they just change their name @warzan
disbanded by Pope Clement V by the bull Vox in Excelso, although in Spain and Portugal they had successors and in Scotland the bull was never properly executed and there are tales that they continued merged with the hospitaller. But at that point you’re running into myth territory
There was only ever one execution in Britain and Scotland of The Templars
I’ll see if I can find the link about them changing their name and continuing in France/Spain I think.
Most of them joined Monastic orders or the Knights Hospitaller
Not the Spanish and Portuguese they had their own, hence my highlighting of them
you did indeed I mist that when I first watched the show.
I cant find the article I was thinking of.
In Spain the Knights Templar held out against the king’s troops in their castles. In the end they were found not guilty of heresy and under the protection of King James II they became part of the Order of Montessa which was affiliated to the Calatrava.
that could be the story I saw they changed their name to something? I know it wasn’t the hospitaller but I cant think what they changed to Montessa doesn’t ring a bell ether.
There were a lot of Minor Knightly Orders at the time. Knights of Santiago (St James) was pretty big in Spain is rumoured to have Templars join them. Remember something like 90% of the Templars were not Knights they were admin guys and servants, they were a Monastic Order taking vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience just like a Monk or Religious Priest would.
While the Templars weren’t as bad as they were charge with they were still objectively Heretical and Pope Clement V did nothing wrong (okay he did a lot wrong, they shouldn’t have been killed maybe just suppressed and censored for a period of time). They spat on the Crucifix as part of their initiation and their excuse was “Well if we captured they’ll make us do it anyway so we’re just getting a head start”.
The main heresy was that they believed Grand Master could give absolution
their main heresy was holding a boat load of cash when a french king was on his uppers and had the pope in his pocket.
Great work on your project Ben.
excellent episode guys. Happy Sunday
(53:00) I tried retarder in my paints. I lick my brush. I came out in hives. All over.
No retarder for me any more.
(56:00) put a drop of Milton in your water (a capful per litre is plenty) before adding to your wet palette – it helps stop that musty stink for a few weeks (it will still start to smell after a while if you’re not careful)
You should try some seasick Steve Guy’s.
I do love your halo hodylamp. @warzan
Lol you guy’s are losing it but don’t change a great thing.
(1:51:00) I hope you cleaned the tip afterwards! 😉
Your tip is shiny mate I rubbed it around on the little moist thingy 😉
No. Never do that. Use the sponge.
(1:52:53) Blu-tack. Sorry Gerry. “Helping hands” are utterly useless for soldering (not just hopeless, they act as a massive heat sink and take all the heat out of the thing you’re holding as you try to solder it!)
Never had that issue. But then I’ve never held anything I was soldering directly in them
Thing about arches is the Romans managed to work them out a couple thousand years back 🙂
The forces in Warren’s set up look like they will be mostly down and a very small amount push outwards.
For the fantasy/historical cross-over, using monks (of the priest variety) they could be spell casters but I was really thinking of cardinals.
Streaming the show onto the Tv this morning and the misses walks in, looks at the TV and of all the things that could be said she immediately asks where did he get the inserts for the Kallax unit while pointing at you @warzan ???♂️. I know you mentioned previously that you sourced them locally but would be great if you could provide a company name or link.
Cheers.
EBay store it was listed in the xlbs a few weeks ago when he first mentioned getting them
Ahh super stuff thanks. I missed that listing, will check it out now ??
OMG, the cult now meets in Warrens hobby room of horror! Dude protect those balls.
Stealing from others the term “Ranger” originated when North America was being settled and there were skirmishes on the frontiers with Native American tribes. The settlements were often so far apart soldiers were needed to patrol between settlements. This new class of soldiers were called “Rangers” and would cover specific “ranges” between settlements.
Great show, good bye and remain in doors.
Ben should go to artel w homepage to get his next minis
“Lloyd knows this shit – Bitches!” Love it!
“Hey Google! What does bukake mean?”
You dodged a bullet there.
Happy Sunday all.
Now I can’t unsee those tails …
@warzan – “most people are shocked when they find out I’m not an electrician.”
You did good.
We’ll work on your soldering 😉
What’s that BBC show that’s sprinkled in there?
Its from the Mitchell and Webb lok. Must be years old now
Theirs a show on BBC3 named lockdown showdown it may be that but I have never seen the show.
I looked it up was made in 2009
Another great cult episode. I have finally cracked it.
Warren has been eating the lead out of the solder.
Happy Sunday fellow COGS. Thanks guys for giving me a Golden Button. Glad you liked my stuff. Love The Weekender. My most watched show. Keep up the great content. Cheers from The Bay Area!
What is the name of the website to download the paper terrain? I really liked it.

Need to start the XLBS’s with updates on weird phenomena like UFO sightings/ ghost stories/etc which Warren does sometimes – these are great!! I miss them!!!

https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1338643/
the opposite of illuminate could be obfuscate @warzan but theirs a page full of words to choose from.
Nice light arch ya got there. That ABS-like UV resin must have stunk to high heavens! I know.. got mine in the basement!
Feels like there’s a real character moment in this episode
Gerry- it’s liquin
Ben- I thought it was honey
Warren- I thought it was a bottle of piss
Lloyd is busy thinking of something else
Happy Monday!
I am bad at scheduling . _.
happy monday
I love this show and guys I’m sure more and more people will be joining the ranks to support this Chanel and you guys, here’s to you happy weekend!!
I don’t think the Knight Templar were disbanded, they were whipped out on Friday the 13th
LOL I loved that cipher even though it was so easy to figure out!
Thank you all so very much for showing my project on xlbs!massively surprised! My daughter is greatly delighted! To be mentioned next to true hobby wizards inspires me to actually paint that drawer of minis!many thanks to OTT again for all their hard work in the community
With Warren going to a smaller scale in gaming I wonder if it’s because when you get older and things start to shrink, you start to respect the smaller things in life?
Andrea… Is that you?????
Great stuff and I am going to try and build a @warzan like arch light, however, I will need to find a different mounting solution as I don’t have access to a 3D printer.
I have started sourcing material for the light, and I did want to share a short video I found about the difference between 12V and 24V light strip in case anyone else was looking into a similar project; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6zfL-kzvr8.
Stay safe CoG’s!
Contender for best ending of a show ever!
