@avernos I agree Gerry (again). GW have indeed marched off in their own direction (as usual). Is the rest of the herd following though? North Star have some super fantasy mulitparts and all of the different boxes offer interchangable options with extra simple resin or metal conversion kits for even wider options. Success like this elsewhere with the ‘older’ style multipose kits shows a reluctance in competitors to emulate GW’s “middle way” of making kits complex enough to be a faff but not complete enough to offer any diversity of unit types. They do some pretty smart push-fit type units (e.g. Primaris Reavers) and I’d almost rather see those kits come in to offer wider guard unit options than have the current Cadians as the only viable choice. Plenty of choices in Star Wars Legion and they might be the easiest assembly minis on the market. GW just feel off the pace here for me.
They certainly pick and choose what is and isn’t a kit in a million bits. I’ve just put my first Onager Dunecrawler together and that had squillions of seemingly unnecessary tiny bits. My grognard eyes and fumblesome fingers aren’t really up to it anymore. This kit is in what is supposedly the introductory pack for this army too.
Sadly I’d also agree with you that we are totally unlikely to ever see any real change in the basic grunt kit for Guard players. Pity.
