I’d second the use of discourse as a forum format, it’s reasonably modern, easy to deploy and maintain and I have had success in the past with it and has been well recieved by users.
I’ve been trying to increase my use of the forumns recently, I’m more of a fan of discord as the discussion is more chatty but I agree a more indepth discussion suits forums.
I’d agree with @darkdanegan too, I’m not always comfortable posting on the forumn as a collective of people we have some very oppinionated individuals and it can sometimes be hard to judge if somebody has become offended, equally i see some threads go off topic because of an invididual’s view and then loose intrest in them. General forum stuff really, but maybe a sign of the times and their popularity deminishing. I also enjoy commenting more on projects and if the process for that was more streamlined i probably would more often.
Off topic (slightly) but I’d argue the project system should equally be seperate from the main site but thats worth of its own thread. I say slightly off topic as seperating out the key areas of OTT makes architectural sense, projects, formums both would work well more independently. The OTT store is sort of a good example of this that exists, though i feel that equally sufferes from a wordpress backend (Its always slow for me at least) but its missing that linking of accounts. It would be great to move away from the wordpress login to a single sign on solution that allows social logins across multiple OTT services rathen than all be tied together, though thats not trivial there are solutions out there.
This isnt a critisim of OTT by the way, just what I think that Ideal place would look like 🙂
