I dont think “replacing” discord would be a good idea. Its a chat not a forum, its serves a different purpose and the technology is completley different, plus it would cost a foture to host something similar or try and repliate it in a forum form. The audices while they overlap are also different, plus for me its a tool i already use for other communities and on odd occasions for work (though thats mostly slack).
I know some of the forum traffic dropped off when the discord was opened up but i think thats partly due to the big event, I for one was wanting that more instant and gratifying converstation that was missing from real word meets and to be honest its what has made me more involved in the comminity, while im trying to get better at contributing to the forums i spend a lot more time just browsing them than posting.
The Discord is also one of the friendlest ive seen for anyone who feels a bit put off by it, just pop in and say hi, somebody will nearly always be around and the topics discussed while short lived can be great if you just want a bit of conversation or have a quick question. It also quite frequently links of to project posts when people want to show off what they have done or peole link to forum posts such as this.
Theres also the CoG radio or the CoG run radio hangout and voice chat or listen in.
Any way, back on topic Discord is Discord, Forums are Forums, this is about making the forum better and i think there has been some great discussion and suggestions in this thread 🙂
