@grantinvanman Another ring? Sir, I believe what you may need is one of those fancy holidays where you might get the ring made. In the long long ago I had this batshit crazy idea of trying to convince a woman I was with to go to Greenland. The idea I had was to go there and mine a ruby from their rather shallow fields (being either the guy setting explosives or pushing the button) and later getting the stone set. That plan was a nice dream but it could pan out for somebody else one day.

@limburger Going from simple assemble furniture to 1:1 scale buildsm Getting into the trades for HVAC I rub elbows with “sparkies” (electricians) a good deal. You’re right about the requirements of a master licensed electrician needing to do the major work as it will be a job requiring permits. I don’t know if they need to study mechanical code as well. My testing was international mechanical code and international fire/gas code so I doubt much translates to help out.

@pagan8th We will hold a spot as we have done for Warren when he was out of commission in the past. Be well and hope they don’t dig any more than they need.

    @horati0nosebl0wer

At school we had the NEN 1010 book as part of our study in electrics (sp?).
That one covers standard AC voltage systems. There’s additional certificates for low voltage and high voltage circuitry and installations. No mechanical aspects, except knowing what kind of cable to use when you need to bury it in the ground .. but that bit is very obvious.

Google tells me that all you need is an exam/certification for that one standard to do work in official capacity. An additional certifcation covers environment, health and safety aspects.

And as with any standard there’s yearly updates as laws and regulations get updated. I’m pretty sure that my pre-2000 copy of those regulations (if I still have it) would be out-of-date. Not sure by how much though. I think we still had literal fuses back then and those are now electromechanical variants (or whatever magic they use).

Core principles will be the same though as I doubt they’ve changed to colour coding of the wires.

HVAC is likely requiring additional certification regarding all the toxic chemicals that are in those systems and the potential hazards those can cause. Definitely something that is not DIY friendly at all.

Which reminds me … that when/if I need to dig in my garden I need to be aware of the one cable running from my house to the shed. If they’ve done that to code there shouldn’t be anything to worry about as you can’t cut it with a shovel.

Phoneline was fixed by the time I got home from work. I was hoping the apology would include a wad of cash for the inconvenience, but you can’t have everything.

On the plus side… two books arrived today for something I’d been pondering for a while… Outgunned RPG and the supplement Action Flicks 2 which has genres that are essentially: Star Wars, Lovecraft, Wild West, Supernatural, Conan, Cop Shows, Jurassic Park, Mad Max, Evil Dead, Duck Tales (I kid you not) and Tron/Free Guy.

There’s got to be something fun to play in there.

@limburger The refrigerants portion of class was not as extensive as you might think. True it scares the hell out of me to think how bad they are if I were to have large scale exposure but one of my friend’s that doe service work says it was a lot scarier than his experience. The testing is multi part for all that and I have a basic qualification so I’m not all that high up on the food chain to do that kind of work. As far as the future, I see developing tech in magnetic cooling in the industrial and commercial sector kicking off and then getting more refined (and cheaper) for domestic use

    Huzzah!

Getting up and reading emails and PMs and people asking me odd stuff. 😉 But I have coffee, the weather is good for cycling and it’s yet another long weekend ahead as Monday is a holiday. (Not that the weekend will be much relaxing, we’re over at the dragon my mother in law for her Birthday dinner)

    More coffee for everybody

@horati0nosebl0wer it’s better to be scared especially with that sort of stuff. That’s the sort of thing that stops you getting complacent and keeps you from doing stupid things.

    pardon the earworm 😉

    Thursday already ?
Had to endure an hour long presentation of corporate policy and financials. I don’t know if the C-whatever-O realised how mind numbingly boring his talk was. They’re not making me want to attend next time if they keep at it like this.

Tonight we watch the YellowBelly #TechnicalDifficulties show as they will explain why they broke their promise at #BrokeBackExpo …

    Mörnings.

    Had to skip game night.

    Did also skip @warbossd stream.

Went into bed at 20:00 (8pm) and fell asleep instantly.

Feeling better now but not “fully recovered”. So I might be very quiet this weekend.

Did put my new Frostgrave spellcards into sleeves only to find out I’m 5 sleeves short. ARGH! Had I know I had ordered some more! *sigh*

    Now coffee.

I had a great time at my first UKGE, so much so that it’s going to be a struggle not to try to go every year (a daunting proposition considering the fact that I live in Oregon).

I used the opportunity to pull the trigger on a few games that I had been contemplating getting into, mainly Guards of Traitor’s Toll and Hairfoot Jousting. I also picked up SAS Rogue Regiment, another game I’d had my eye on for a while, and picked up some Time Travellers and Colony 87 models from Crooked Dice.

My other fairly big purchase was all the new rulebooks and a few packs of models for Dead Man’s Hand Redux, and a small town’s worth of mdf buildings from Warbases — I guess I’m getting back into Dead Man’s Hand…

I had an interesting limiting factor in that I had to think about how much stuff I could reasonably fit in my luggage, so I tended to prioritize things that would be harder to find back home.

The SAS game box was really bulky, but after I punched out the counter sheets there was about 2″ of space at the top of the box for smaller stuff. Shucking all the single models from their blister packs helped too.

Oddly, the only thing airport security gave us any hassle about was the card packs for Dead Man’s Hand — I guess they looked suspicious on the x-ray machine.

@pagan8th my group played the Outgunned Superheroes quickstart a few weeks ago. The system is pretty fun and very simple to learn, although I think the quickstart was pretty abbreviated.

I just got the KS bundle for Outgunned Adventure plus the two Action Flicks books, so we’ll definitely be playing again. I would be interested to hear how the game goes for you.

@jeffersonpowers I’m about to sit in the players seat for a few weeks which is a pleasant change.

I’ve been trying to run an Arabian Nights game, but the rules were not feeling right. I wanted something more cinematic and that’s what Outgunned is for. I’ll be spending the next few weeks adapting the characters to my setting.

Outgunned Adventure is in the post now. That might suit my idea better, but I want to run an Outgunned modern game too and Action Flicks 2 has so many interesting options to choose from.

ah the joys of travelling by plane …

The “How the heck am I going to haul this back”-question is definitely something to consider when travelling to the expo (or any convention for that matter).

I’ve always wanted to cross the pond and visit gen con indy, but it’s such an expensive option and it would cost a fortune to ship everything back to the UK.

Essen is more practical and if I went by train the luggage should be less of an issue, but it’s still going to cost a lot.

So I’ll probably stick to UK conventions and thus far it’s only the Games Expo.

I did go to Gen Con UK a couple of times, but that died out years ago.

@limburger I found that it forced me to be at least a little more disciplined with my purchasing than I might have been otherwise. Luckily we planned ahead and brought a couple of extra carry-on sized bags…

@pagan8th the Action Flicks modularity is what appealed to me too, along with the relatively “rules lite” approach. I like there to be enough rules that I feel like I’m playing a game, but not so much that I’m always looking up stuff in a book or feeling like I’ve forgotten something. I’m optimistic that Outgunned will fit the bill, but I do need to spend a little more time with it.

    Last weekend’s pledge went well.

I also got a first game of Midgard in using my Slaine models

    20250605_134535657_iOS

I’ll put a battle report in that project later today.  We had 300 points a side, Drunes with Fomorians on the left, The Earth Tribes with Fir Bolg on the right.  Close game.  Slaine won, naturally 😀

    #1932084

    @zoidpinhead that looks fun!

I have Midgard; need to clear my commissions and then I get to it proper.

Also, I’m looking at my first motorcycle camping trip to get away for a week. Mountains are under 2 hours from my home, so why not? No hobby there, I assure you. Just … mountains.
