Heia Safari!

    Is the phrase?

    A. The title of a popular WW1 marching song
    B. The title of a book written by von Lettow-Vorbeck
    C. A morale boosting shout or cheer
    D. All of the above.

    Answer below.

I’m building a WW1 German East African Force to use with the Blood & Valor rules. I couldn’t find any sniper models so I started to look at some alternatives.

I recently found out that shooting clubs in German East Africa were also reserve units of the Schutztruppe. I figured they would probably have more civilian gear than military gear but would try to emulate the official uniforms as much as possible. And later in the war as supplies ran out, there was no longer a standardized uniform, so either way, I could add some more civilian looking miniatures to my force. And if one retired officer just happens to have a young daughter who just happens to be in the shooting club, why not?

I plan on using the two figures carrying the rifles as snipers. The guy with the machete and the duel pistol wielder would probably go into the close combat squad with a few Askari and then the archeologist would be an objective piece.

    All figures by Pulp Figures.

Answer: D. All of the above.

    Dwarf Party

Finished my Dwarf project for a friend.

Loved making the display base. The cheat of Casandora Yellow wash being used carefully over metal next to candles, for cheeky OSL, was something I will definitely try again.

Pile of Shame No More 44b

Okay, it’s taken nearly a year (I did virtually no traditional “hobby” between Christmas 2019 and August 2020), but I finally have these 15mm Iraqis complete.

I have already talked about the tank conversions, kit bashes, etc (15mm Battlefront originally from Fate of a Nation and Team Yankee). So I won’t bore everyone again. Suffice it to say I have three tank platoons of three tanks, two ZSU-23-4 “Shilka” SPAAGs, and a platoon of five BTR-6o infantry carriers.

So now I just had to finish up my infantry. I used PSC’s Cold War Soviets as a base. A staggering 141 figures come in the box, way more than I need for this this project, so I just used 70, saving the other 7o (and the better support weapons) for a future Soviet project.

Now the force (86 pieces in all) is complete. Note this represents the units, uniforms, and equipment used by the Iraqi ARMY, not the Republican Guard (so no T-72M-based “Lions of Babylon” or BMPs). This is because the project is specifically aimed at 1991 Gulf War battles between Iraqis and the United States Marine Corps, who fought battles further east of where the Republican Guard was deployed (Al Khafji, Kuwait City Airport, etc).

    >>>

I’m very pleased with the PSC Cold War Soviet infantry box. Includes snipers with Dragunov rifles, RPGs with RPG assistants (AK riflemen carrying additional rockets), AT-3 Sagger ATGWs (AT-4 Spigots and AGS-17 “Plamya” auto-grenade launchers also provided, not pictured here because I am saving them for my actual Soviets), PKM GPMGs, SA-7 MANPADS missile, and of course plenty of AKM riflemen.

    The whole force.

So with 16 AFVs and 70 infantry, I basically have an understrength mixed-arms battalion here, actually VERY understrength … which works given the six weeks of air pounding the Iraqi Army suffered before the ground war started in earnest on 24 Feb 1991.

The rest of the photos from my 15mm Iraqi 1991 Desert Storm force.

Here are some of the support teams. AT-3 Sagger ATGW tank killers, sniper, RPG-7 gunner with assistant, officer, and SA-7 AA missile

    Side view of the force.

Bedrock of most Arab armies from 1970s to the early 1990s. T-55 tank (or variant), BTR infantry carrier, AT-3 Sagger (these killed an entire Israeli tank division in one day in 1973), and the RPG-7. Oh, and towed artillery. I handle that with off-board units, but trust me, they will be on the list (D-30 howitzers, mostly)

We’ll see how these guys stand up to my 15mm US Marines!

    (Draft for an RPG.net review)

Tiny Furniture’s “Medieval bakery” is a multi-piece miniature set consisting of… quite a few pieces! A bread oven, a warming oven, and two bakery tables with overhead shelving are just the start. A wine cask… bushel of cabbages… urn and lid… broom… sacks… flour stone mill… pitcher… small basket, two wine bottles, sprig of garlic, two jars on one sprue… pie, two pieces of pastry, and a pretzel on another… plate… sack of apples… sack of grain… another sack of grain… apron hanger… washcloth hanger… three pastries… and two serving baskets of cookies. That’s one busy bakery. Many of these pieces are available individually. The set is available unpainted and painted.

Each of the larger pieces also has smaller items on them. The oven has two smaller candles, a fire, and firewood. One overhead shelving has a pumpkin, lid, container, bowl of something, two pretzels, jar with cover, small plate of wafers, two notes, and three dried vegetable sprigs. The other overhead shelving has two jars, three bowls of different somethings, a basket of apples, a mug-shaped basked of another something, a sprig of garlic, a bread cutting board, some sort of brush, two notes, and a rag. One kitchen counter island has three apple or meat turnovers, two bowls of stuff, a rolling pin, a pitcher, a pestle, and basket of round breads or cookies. The other has a book, jar, two pastries, a pie, and rolling pin.

My first attempt at a “hobby build” video:

    The finished tank:
I went for a mid-war (Summer ’43) generalized scheme. Primed in black. Base coat with airbrush, shooting yellow-gold acrylic. Then added Vallejo dark green and dark brown ver-r-r-ry carefully for the rest of the camo scheme, touch-up with brush / wet blending. Acrylic medium gray on tracks, followed by Vallejo black wash. Vallejo wash black / dark umber mix for pin-washing the rest of the tank.

Commander in acrylic “pavement” black (very very dark grey), with red-piped shoulder boards (panzerwaffe was technically a dark pink, but close enough), white cuffbands, officer insignia on cap, hint of Knight’s Cross at neck.

15mm transfers from PSC. Made sure the number ended in “1” so this would be a platoon leader. Number 121 = 1st Kompanie, 2nd platoon leader).

Added radio antenna (dust broom bristle). Mounted just behind turret on the right hand side (per blueprints).

Achtung! Tiger! All my Soviet and British and American tank minis suddenly feel less comfortable.

I thought this thread was broken up into monthly versions. I hope I’m wrong because I’m putting my latest pictures here.

I have some Kharadron Overlords sitting on my shelf for a long time (rather awkward as one of them was a special character gifted to me by my brother) and I’ve just didn’t know what to do them. I’m not sure I still don’t know, but I got an idea from watching this video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/gMpkklqhs2U.

He mixed Balthazar Gold with a Vallejo green and dry brushed his chaos marines with it. So at about midnight, when I should be going to bed, I’m mixing Vallejo Hammered Copper with the Vallejo Hexed Lichen (a dark purple) and dry brushing my Kharadrons with that (I swear this seemed like a good idea at midnight. And here are the results:

    Robber Barons henchmen 01

My character, who I’ve apparently glued backwards onto the flying stand because he’s shooting up straight into the air.

    Robber Baron 02

And his balloon, which I have no idea who I’m going to attach now.

    Robber Baron 03

Well, I like the purple copper drybrush effect, even if I’m not sure where to go from here.

Update: Did I mention I didn’t know how I was going to attach my little robber baron to his lead zeppelin? Because it turned out he attached just fine. He’s probably more securely attached to his ballast than his flight stand.

    Robber Baron 04

Tiny Furniture’s “Dungeon Garbage” is a seven-piece miniature set of heaps of garbage and medieval junk. The miniatures have excellent detail, with an assortment of garbage suitable for dungeons, city states, and villages. Each heap pile is a collection of smaller distinct items, so don’t underestimate the time you should dedicate to painting these miniatures. The miniatures are based on molds from Lady Sabelle Designs. If you’re familiar with Hirst Arts, think of Lady Sabelle Designs as molds for accessories, rather than game tiles and buildings. I tracked down these miniatures to Lady Sabelle Designs’ “Mold #3 – Rags and Riches”, if you have experience with resin and plaster molds.

The contents and a description of the garbage piles are:
    * Random: smaller pile of wood, fabric, and pottery.
    * Treasure: medium pile with wood barrel, axe, and book.
    * Treasure: small pile with urn, skull, and small chest.
    * Random: small pile with urn, boot, and wood.
    * Residence: medium pile with pitcher, plate, bottle, bread loaf, and wooden chair (?).
    * Random: medium pile with plate and wood.
    * Gears: medium pile with large gears, ox idol head, and bottle.

The descriptions are just approximate. Certainly you can find whatever you’d like your players to find in these piles. My only nitpick is that the “gears” miniature seems a bit out of place, since most dungeons and medieval settings, other than maybe a mill or clockwork tower, wouldn’t have a pile of large gears as debris.

I will keep posting pics until I get some feedback. Here is an old Reaper Ogre, or hill giant, or something. This blighter was so heavy that no amount of poster putty kept him from falling off my stand. I had to superglue him on.

    Ogre

Skin is painted with Zandri dust, then washed with earthshade, then highlighted with Zandri Dust. The base was painted with Bugman’s glow, then highlighted with a Vallejo orange to look like shale (I swear it looks better in person).

After painting, I covered the mini in Mod Podge. Hope I wasn’t supposed to thin it with water before applying, because I didn’t.

Been working on bits that aren’t committed to a project yet.

A d&d character, after playing on discord for the first time, got kitbashed into a fun interpretation of him. Alba Blaidd. ? We faced a Minotaur. He was hit repeatedly in the nethers. Less said soonest mended.
