Get away from nasty beasties by hiding up some stairs in 40K
July 19, 2010 by lloyd
Did you know you can be a little sneaky and hide units from beasts by putting them up a floor in a building. Yes it turns out beasts can’t go up stairs, sounds silly but there you go. So if a unit is not on the ground floor they can not be assaulted by beasts and so are free to fart in there general direction 🙂

Seems logical to me that Thunder Wolves would be on a bike base.
That’s what I thought. It looks like that one would fit perfectly.
Good vid Darrell !
I’m sorry but could you give us a page indication ,as i’m not able to find something proving you’re right under the “beast and cavalry troop type” so i’m wondering how did you get this idea?
Anyway,keep going you cheesemaker
It’s not under the cavalry rules but the ruins ones. “”only infantry, jump infantry, jetbikes, monstrous creatures and walkers may move onto the upper levels of a ruin”
Thanks!At least that’s a precise reference!And now i must say that I agree,althought giant-ape mounted blaondes should be allowed to climb buildings….
ThePetitBilly
King Kong counts as a Super Heavy Walker.
Now, please excuse me, I’m off to convert a Titan sized war-gorilla…
p. 83 of the BRB, under the heading “Moving Within Ruins”.
Also ,if you are a blonde just don’t say that “beasts can’t climb buildings” to king kong,it would feel “deja-vu”….
This is really sneaky, I’ve never actually noticed this until I took a second look at the rules(mostly looking for a way to disagree, you just nerfed my wolves lol) Seems kinda silly that cavalry can’t climb stairs but a carnifex can
bless his 1st vid alone, good job Darrell!! i think a wolf like that should be on 40mm base
I have to disagree with you on the 40mm base. If you look at Canis Wolfborn, he is mounted on a 60mm base.
Well Darrell, to answer this question i would say they can. only because my 140lb mastiff / pressa canario who you could damn near ride like a wolf, can easily climb up the stairs to my house no problem! The rules are in your favor though, i don’t possibly see a wolf, my dog, or a horrmagaunt for that matter climbing a vertical ladder through a steel cage intended for infantry.
Darrell pg54 movement beasts and cavalry move like infantry,Also pg83 moving within ruins 1st para gives a list of models that can move to the upper levels (pg no’s from the little rule book),thats the way i see it….
ya good vid Derrell now I know how to stop my friends stupid thunderwolf cav. Thanks 🙂
I dunno, I would say they can because it says they move like infantry in all respects and it says infantry can move up/down stairs so…..
But do understand that “moves like infantry” is not “unit type: infantry”. And the list in the ruins section of the rulebook clearly states different unit types, infantry, walker, etc.
Darrell, Where can I find a rule stating Objectives must be on the lower floor of a building. I would love it if that were true, I hate having to spend any where from 1-3 turns getting to an objective when people place them on the top floor, so if I could find that rule I would be extremely happy!
Nice video, thanks Darrell.
Well if you build stairs to your ruin i would say “yes, they can”. But ladder? No!
Good video!!
I´ll take notes for my Thunderwolf cavalry then…
Bummer for Wolves.
p 54 says they move like infantry but p83 says they can’t, but i could see them leaping up there to pounce on the enemy.
Well, I can imagine a goblin riding on a wolf, but a bloody 200kg Space Marine?!? The wolf should be crushed! Unless it’s a clockwork wolf… Hmm… do wolfoids dream of electric sheep…?
Well, the Thunderwolves are quite far from normal wolves, as in they’re freaking huge, really freaking huge. Also who knows what else inhabits the deadly world of Fenris? And Canis Wolfborn’s thunderwolf has bionic enhancements to boot.
Would a normal sized wolf be crushed by a 200kg marine? Darn near. But there are Fenris wolves the size of a Rhino APC, hence the Thunder Wolves. Just have a look at the Canis Wolfborn model
200kg? And the rest, a Space Marine would weigh about the same as one of those little city cars.
Also, “there are no wolves on Fenris…”
and this is why Darell should be on his own in a vid.
He stutters, Spouts his normal Cheese with no one to slap him and for his to stroke his ego by showing of Space wolfs and Necrons….his armys.
Personally think Darell is great and gets exactly what is needed across. You obviously dislike the guy for some random reason, no need to hold a grudge though kid.
gotta agree with you on that mate he always does and i think jaws needs to lay off the burns for darell the hole team is amazing
If your going to come hating your in the wrong place. We all thing the team ( i think i speak for all the regular viewers ) are great…
I often use the Wolflord on Thiunderwolf, Rune Armour, Saga ot Warrior b, SSand PF
He always is worth his points, cause either he kills a lot of stuff (he overkills T5 modells like Waghbosses)
or he scares the crap out of my oponents^^
This combo is a MONSTER! if used right, I sometimes fail using him right, but my dice also cross my plans from time to time.
I think it would make more sense for cavalry could move 12″ fleet and attack normal, but it doesn`t make that much a difference. I think I will use Canus with the modelled weapons to play him (I prox him right now) and he is shipped with a Cybot sice base, but actually I think I should mount him on a cavalry/bike base, cause he is a cavalry type.
Makes perfect sense. beast can’t climb ladders, and cavalry can’t jump up there without their rider falling off.
Now I’m glad Hormagaunts are infantry again 😛
I use my wolves to clear out the top floors of ruins all the time. But all good things must come to an end.
I understand not being able to clime ladders, but not stairs. That’s just dumb. But then again when was the last time you saw stairs models into 40K ruins?
Darrell glad to see their letting you run solo. Good job.
Can I get a page reference on Objectives being on the ground floor please Darrell? All I’m seeing on page 91 is not in Impassable, close to another objective or sometimes board edge. Most every game I play its common for me to put objectives up high as I play mechdar, not only does it screw TWC but also nob bikers.
Good to see you’ve got your own video going btw look forward to seeing more!
Personally this relay should depend on the building, i mean my cats can get up and down stairs so could a pack of wolves, and i look at the 3″ floor two of your building, now look at canis wolfborn i personally think he and his mount could jump that.. but i don’t see a warp beast doing so …
does this mean raveners cant climb buildings that sucks
For a wolf I would think it would jump up no problem. Horses, definitely not.
great work like always daryl
I know its in the rules but i would of thought that being there is a gezzer on the back of said horse/wolf that he would be in control of it he aint ganna be sitting on it for the hell of it is he ,look at horse racing if a racing horse didnt have a jockey on his back would it come out of the trap going like the clappers no it wouldnt were i would agree on would be that any hooved animal weather its got someone in control of it or not would have trouble walking up stairs but a wolf that has five toes much like a human would be able to walk up stairs quite easily.
But then iam probably looking far deeply into it but to me it seems logical
But guys be warned!!! just like the darleks from Dr who you spend all this time thinking oh yeah stairs will make me safe and then BOOM! one day its FAQed and wolves and horses can fly D: ………….. sorry about the nerd out there i couldnt resist
I use 5 thunder wolfs with stormsheilds and 1 with a thunder hammer yeah its like 430points but i have only ever lost 2 of them in a game and they always mash any unit they hit, after all 5 str 10 tunder hammer attacks +20 str 5 rending your laughing!
I am pretty sure that you can declare a charge 1 story above or below you if you can’t actually get there. You are counted to be in base contact. This is in the Buildings section.
great video darrel 😀 thats the first vid with just darrel 😀 go darrel 😛
This is why when you face Space marine bike armies you place the objectives at least 3inches up a building if you can. That way they have to wipe you out 😀
maybe climbing stairs but not ladders… though my gaming group does have house rules for stair…
what about Tyranid Ravener the are beasts will they have the same problem?
@tyranichive Anything with the unit type beasts or cavalry will have this problem
Legally TWC have to be placed on a 60mm base, this is because the thunder wolf model(wolfy Mc’wolf born) is supplied with a 60mm base and it says very clearly in the rulebook that a model must use the base it is supplied with.
There is no real argument as to why TWC should use a base smaller than 60mm as the only TW that is available just now is supplied with a 60mm base. In the fluff TW are described as being “easily twice the size of a Terran bear” (Thunder from Fenris) so even if there is some rules loophole that lets you put them on a smaller base fluff wise it doesn’t make sense as they are huge.
If you have a power fist in the squad you could always just destroy the building lol.
I think Calvary Units should be able to move 6″ plus D6 in their moving phase. I reckon that would be fair.
Can some1 tell me where in the rule book it says u cant put objectives makers on the top floor of a building
I asked the same question and I know someone else did as well. I searched my rulebook and could not find anywhere it states that it must be on bottom floor. As much as I would like this to be so I think Darrell is wrong.
Nice first solo video Darrel 🙂
so can nids climb buildings
Hey Bow, I know its off topic for this vid but how did you make those hills on the board they are awesome are they scratch built or purchased, thanks.
They made it. Check out their GameScape vid
Great, now i have the picture of a firewarrior balancing on an streetlight while a pack of Thunderwolves sit around it in my head. 🙂
When I built my THwolves I called GW and asked. The answer I was given was since Canis Wolfborn is basically the same thing, then they should be mounted on the same style base as him i.e. a large round base. I used biker bases to mount my Frenisian Wolves which I purchased from the GW Fantasy line.
ps I love fielding my THwolves they are extremely killy, but man are they expensive point wise.
How do you play ThunderWolf Calvery? Take five riders, give one a ThunderHammer and a Storm Shield. IF you’re really going for a awesome close combat unit give them all Storm Shields. Take a Wolf Lord, give him a ThunderWolf mount, twin power fits, and attach to the unit. I’ve taken out up to four entire squads before they were killed off. Tanks and transports don’t stand a chance. Best scenario ever I got them close enough to RAgnar Blackmane to gain Furious Charge and rolled +3 on the charge attacks. Wiped out a 20 man unit of NIDS before they could get one swing back. Choice!
Haha good idea there.
On a completely different topic could you guys review a few type of non premade trees as they are many out there from different companies.
Wow, nice catch. Sorta broken, but nice rules catch, lol 😉
i think they should move 10 inchis
Love the videos Darrel! keep up the cool stuff!
Btw, i made something for fun, dont mean to offend you. follow the link 😛
If this offends Darrel or any other members of BOW i will delete it immediately, or feel free to delete this post.
That is officialy the most awesome picture ever.
That is truly a masterpiece. Picasso himself would be jealous of the amazingness of that picture. 😀
Not sure on this, as rule book states ” Otherwise, they assault just like infantry.” Down to if base can fit scenario!
Assault like infantry, and having unit type:infantry are not the same thing. Check the rules for ruins (pg 83 of the mini rule book) it specifically lists what units can climb to higher levels, and cavalry aren’t listed.
Good video. However, as some have noted, when discussing a specific rule (especially one not well known), it would be very helpful to provide (a) page number(s).
What can climb in ruins: p. 83. Note that the following, also, cannot climb ruins: non-jet Bikes, Artillery, Beasts, Calvary, and non-walker Vehicles.
Objectives on the first level only: I could not find this rule. I believe it is one of your house rules. If I am wrong, please provide the page number for this rule.
A guy at my club has a really cool thunderwolf with rider on it (forge world i think). He uses a dreadnought base for his, but his wolf is slightly larger then the one in this vid.
hmmm in my opinion it really depends. Calvary definitely can’t climb stairs. beast. could climb stairs but not ladders. and some beast if you think about it if they are really strong they maybe be able to scale a building or maybe jump to another floor if they are that agile but it all depends on the beast
i agree completely on this with one exception, if there is stairs/ramps/walkways from floor to floor then they should be able to travel inbetween floors as long as they are connected by an uniterupted path way, and the move counts as the rest of the terrian.
I totally agree
beasts are now Daleks.
So your telling me that gaunts under the all extensive intelligence of the hive ming cannot mentally comprehend the aspect of climing stairs.
