Our resident time lord David is off in the ether today and so Warren has brought Stu to the studio to have a chat about all things Flames of War & his sinister plans for gaming in the gaps of World War II. We'll be getting to see not only some of Warren's plans but he has also brought in some of the cool bits and pieces that he'll be using to make his imagination come to life. This includes some of the fantastic scenery from the guys over at 4Ground, some super heavy tanks from Heer46, and some handy stuff from the guys at Flames of War.
And if you want to join in and set up your Germans as the mighty Nacht Wölfe here are the download links:

Jackie Chan’s Armour of God II (Operation Condor) is set in modern day where a Nazi base in the desert which houses a secret weapons facility is found, run by the last of the Nazi commanders and his henchmen. The wind tunnel scene is phenomenal.
Fantastic film I bloody love watching it.
And isn’t it the one where he had his mishap with a tree and ended up with a hole the size of a baseball in his skull?
Nope, that was the previous movie where he put a hole in his skull, Armour of God (the full title for Operation Condor in China is “Armour of God II: Operation Condor. The Accidental Spy”). In Operation Condor he dislocated(?) his sternum. I didn’t even know you could do that, honestly.
I play games primarily for the story, wither it is video games or miniature games. Gotta admit that’s a nice bit of fluff you’ve created for your own little corner of the world. Ever since you started the first video I’ve been debating making my own. Then I found the Canadian Regiment lists in some of the newer books and I’m almost completely sold. Going to have to keep an eye on this ongoing scenario.
can you do something about the video stopping and looping at 7 minutes mark, it happens quite often lately on the first day.
Nacht Wolfen eh?

you may also want to google roco / herpa minitanks they are eveb better detailed.
Hmm, I am not convinced. I do not need to play historical accurate, but that story goes to far for my taste…
I have to agree. I’m fairly flexible when it comes to historical details but this “Nacht Wulfen” concept has put me off this series. I had recently gotten into FoW and I was looking forward to using this series as an introduction to the game.
The weird thing is I actually enjoy alternate history fiction – I love Hellboy & I’ve joined the kickstarter for “Achtung Cthulhu”. But it baffles me when people introduce these elements into regular historical games when you’ve already got alt-history games like “Dust Tactics” & “AT-43”.
Currently starting a German force and am now thinking Nachtwulf! Nice to have another way of looking at this game. But like Stu all I could think of was a counter force hunting them down….. Decisions, decisions, decisions!
Knights Templar reborn under the flag of the Allies to fight the NachtWulf? Masons of America, other secret organizations pour money into the building of a secret army to take on this occult driven force of Germans. SAS, unwittingly become part of this. Their secret missions were part of this grand scheme to take down this uber powerful Axis force.
BoW Ben
What about an offshoot of the Knights Templar who allied with the Germans? That would be a flip from normal plots.
Sorry, I don’t want to sound mean but I want to get this off my chest. What happened to BoW?? When I first found BoW less then a year ago, this show was A W E S O M E!!!. You had diff vid’s up ALL the time (4 or 5 a week) There was ” unboxing” “John with painting”, sorry I don’t like Roman water colors….. I miss Andy and Darrel. No more demo’s, wth?! No consistency, no set days for certain vid’s No set Host. What happened to doing a demo on board games?? That was cool. I used to check this site 2 or 3 times a day, now i check it out 1 or 2 times a week. I miss the BoW of old. Since you moved to England things seemed to have gone down hill……. Owell, thanks for the good times. I finding other places for my war gaming fix. Take care.
I still like BoW, though things have changed here without a doubt.
On the one side production is pretty polished but, content wise there seems to be an loss in quantity. Though the formats a getting longer playtims and I think there is more to watch in case of sheer minutes. I also like the shift away from GW products, we dont need more GW unboxings,, enough people are doing this already.
I think BoW s in a state of transition, and in the long run i expect a gain in content quality and quantity.
I had (have) a nice collection of Mid-War Hungarians, sorry, they never learned to punch a hole in a paper bag. There is no fun in always getting your ass handed back to you. Fortunately there are other games with less restrictive rules (army lists) which can be just as much fun, but less with historical restrictions.
Has anyone played the V.C. with only infantry and win on at least an equal basis?
Now if Roman would show me how to paint 15mm eyes I would be really impressed.
Sounds like a lot of fun for Herr Warzan. I love the background. There is a slight whiff of power gaming about it though….”i’ll take all the best stuff and add more super stuff to it and wipe out the oppo….and not worry about points balance……”. Might run out of oppos quite quickly. Perhaps need to balance it so if you get all the coolest stuff the army can’t get more than a draw unless it kills everything your oppo has…and only wins by obtaining the relic AND wiping out the oppo.
Id guess the allies would just invent lots of bogus relics/rumours and lead the nacht wolfen around the globe keeping them away from important warzones…..but that doesn’t wargame well! I do love @brennon s suggestion of a masonic sponsored group fits really nicely…..
Love the ideas expressed in this vid.
At my LFGS, there are FOW armies based on the Hellboy back story. And a S.A.S ‘Pink Panther’ desert raiding army.
(Yes this one came out because some British units painted their jeeps pink for dessert camoflage! But did not have leaders named after the Peter Sellers films.Lol)
There is NOTHING wrong in making your own background for your army.If you get passionate about your hobby and army it is only a good thing IMO.
I would say that it might be a good idea for Warren to pick an ‘official’army list for FoW.
And then use ‘counts as’ .So Although the SS Nacht Wolfen have the best equipment , it counts as ‘standard SS equipment’ for standard games .
(So you can get to know the rules well .before you go making senarios and stuff.)
Most FoW SS armies are fearless veterans , and have the best stuff any way!
If the armies can play standard rules, it means more games played.
(Less time spent on developing senario’s while learning the game rules.)
What models you prefer and the back story you create just adds an extra depth to the gaming experiance.
Perhaps a secret order of Templar Knights fighting the evil if the Nacht Wolfen might be in order?
PS, Warren, if you like the Stug IIIG tanks in the starter set.
Have you looked at the Stug Batterie list in Grey Wolf?
A 1750 pt list could go like this..
HQ Stug.
3 Stug platoons 3 Stug in each.
Pioneer platoon ,with ‘Goliath'(remote controlled bomb tank) and RSO supply truck.
(As the Nacht Wolfen have all the latest kit this seems to fit?)
King Tiger (Super heavy tank.)
Nerblewerfer batterie.(Rocket launcher artillery.)
And a AA platoon , 3 20mm AA guns mounted on the back of 3 tonne trucks .
This gives you 10 of your favorite tanks,a super tank, rocket launcher artillery ,some sneaky AA, and some tricked out infantry with high tech gadgets.(For WWII.)
Just thought this might be a good place to start a ‘standard army list’ you might like to learn the rules with.
Stu,
I read about the bat bomb also.
The idea was that the bats (with incendiary bombs) were dropped over over a city at night, but the bombs were set to go off during the day.
The bats would have roosted in the various nooks and crannies of the area they had been dropped over.
Get John over to do a guest unboxing
I sign up for the Nacht Wolfen!
Warren, am I wrong in imagining a sea of black/gunmetal Stugs with Nacht Wolfen back banners?
The Heer 46 models Warren mentions at ca. 43:00 are awesome.
I visited the RolePlayConvention in Cologne/Germany today and had the chance to meet and greet the mastermind behind Heer 46 and his fellow coworker. Very nice guys and great products.
Bought a Heer 46 E-75 tank and immediately compared it to my Battlefront Königstiger when I came home. I was pretty happy with my Battlefront models… until now. In direct comparsion with Heer 46 models, Battlefront cant keep up. The Heer 46s cast is flawlessly executed, sharp details, no bubbles, very, very few flashlines AND proper proportions, no Battlefronty morph magic.
I am pretty impressed by the quality, think will do a little photo driven unboxing in the forums myself on the morrow.
Damn you Warren, damn you to hell. You’ve managed to get me interested in yet another game I was trying to stay away from! Curses! 🙂
Now get that David Timelord fellow in there and tell me about the finns and how infantry works in FoW… 2.0!
I agree with zero… stop making things look so fun… Gragh!
Oh, and that Dust box was scaring me through the video. I’M silently praying no one gives Warren huge mecha…
You mean like the Gear Krieg 15mm mechas from DP9? 😉
I really, really hope Battlefront do a Weird War expansion in the (near!) future.
Or that we will see a Dust crossover expansion.
loved it keep on gaming in the gaps lads 🙂
Hello, My first time on BoW.
Warren: may i offer some very mean advice for the new guy?
Grey Wolf: Totenkopf SS: here’s why
—Fearless veteran
—You can choose Tanks OR Infantry as Troop choices, but you take 1 of each anyway
—Gear: Scouts can have Assault Rifles. You get Flamethrower Vehicles. You get the Rocket Howitzer Stormtiger tank. You can get Overlong 88’s that are better than normal 88’s. Tigers possible, (not king tigers, sorry) as well as all kinds of support kit.
—Death or Victory special rule: these guys don’t fail morale checks, they just take a casualty and keep going. can wear you thin, but if you really want hardcore…(i believe that rule is assault only)
if the Totenkopf could add King-Tigers and Jagd-Panther’s it’d be perfect for you.
Cheers, all!
EDIT: looked at the newest incarnation on easyarmy.com. not what i remember.
Oops!
Does anyone have a good SS build for our master Warren? FV and hard-tanks a must!
I would really like to get into Flames of War, but it is so expensive! One American P-40 Warhawk fighter aircraft is $17.50? $17.50 for one!!! I can go to the dollar store or a toy store and buy them for much cheaper.
I love WWII history. I would like to see them come out with American/Allied Marines and vehicles. Also Japanese troops too, for Pacific campaigns and jungle fighting. I think it is fantastic they came out with Vietnam pieces, but lets not forget Korean War era too!
I used to play WH40K epic when it first came out, and it was great to have troops, tanks and titans on the table. It didn’t cost a lot and you didn’t need a lot of space to play or a lot of space to store your armies.
Check out Plastic Soldier Company and the Russian Zvezda line, distributed through them. Much more humane prices and the models are as good (if not better than FoW).
here is a idea for my FOW army . the NachtWulf normally leave no one alive but sometime around 1942 1 allied soldier survived to inform allied high command about the fact that the NachtWulf were hunting down the remains of a ancient civilization advanced beyond humanity’s wildest dreams. in order to deny the enemy of any more technology from the civilization the allies (excluding the communists) all send elite soldiers and money to the newly funded extraterrestrial combat unit (X-com for short). x-com also teamed up with many secret society’s such as the knights Templar. near the end of the war x-com started fighting the soviets in a desperate bid to capture the NachtWulf research and facility in berlin but failed, luckily Stalin dismissed the information as useless rambling. the NactWulf fled to a secret base in Antarctica while several all-NactWulf units traveled the world with the French foreign legion and on its own accord fighting x-com soldiers until 1954 when the entirety of the NactWulf deployed to Vietnam in a bid to take a fully intact alien city known to the locals as Shangri la. the result was a apocalypse like event that led to the city, all alien technology and the NachWulf to destruction. the governments of earth then deactivated the project. that is until 2015 when skyrangers took to the skies against the aliens returning to one of there lost colonies…..
By the looks of it, and the amount of people interested in this idea, the Nacht Wolfe will have been destroyed as a hundred different armies all wipe each other out in an attempt to get… something from vietnam…
@wwbushidow.
There are lots of companies making 15mm WWII stuff.
EG .Plastic Soldier Company do excellent plastic vehicle kits.(5 for less than £20)
Old Glory, Forged In Battle, Skytrex , etc.All do white metal infantry , and white metal/resin vehicles.
(If you shop around you can play FoW quite cheaply.)
The Open Fire starter set is excellent value , and the best place to start IMO.
(And some of Battlefronts other boxed sets are realy good value too.)
I have posted a little unboxing of a HEER 46 E 75 Tank. The HEER 46 Stuff would fbe a good fit for Warrens Nacht Wolfen since they are prototype Tanks and so the finest in Tech availible at that time.
http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/flames-of-war/forum/topic/heer-46-e-75-tank-unboxing/
I know the perfect objective marker for Warrens Nacht Wolfen. For the 2011 GT Battlefront gave away “Illinois Ford & The Chest Of Mystery” which is basically the scene from Raiders of The Lost Ark where Indy threatens to blow up the ark with a Bazooka.
Ok Warren you have created a different division that didn’t exist and no doubt will happily play as SS, Heer, FJs etc.
Don’t have an issue with that and full marks for coming up with something that may add extra colour to the games. But please make sure what ever force you take to the table is one that follows the restrictions of an official book/pdf list and you don’t start making up your own order of battle.
While in the safety of your own home people might say that’s fine to do you run the risk of a force which isn’t balanced with others to give a fair fight.
Next up I want to see you take on the Napoleonics
Other than the name sounding cool this Nacht Wolfen concept is utter bunk unless it is going to be based around an actual working S.S. list from the late war period. You can’t just take a smattering of this and that and throw it together. You have to pick a list foremost. I’d also suggest learning how to play the core game at an advanced level before bringing in bright silver stug’s with giant wolves stuck on the side of them and trying to make fow 15mm 40k
