FoW For The Win EP 6: D-Day Books & Real Army Lists!
July 12, 2013 by warzan
Video Sponsors: Wayland Games
Time for the guys to get together and start to plan out what they'll be taking for their epic D-Day game. Warren will be working from the Atlantik Wall book and David will be running his forces from Overlord. Get ready folks because this one is going to be huge!

This series has made me decide to get into this game! I’ve always been interested in WW2 but was never sure about historical games. This has changed my mind 🙂 Also i have been reading a book called ‘The Barbed-Wire University’ which is about what allied prisoners of war did to make being locked up for so long bearable. Even if you are not a ‘historical’ person it is such a good human interest story. It is warm, funny and in bits really sad but a fantastic read!
Dave is super cool and I love Warren’s enthusiasm… from a game I wasn’t interested, they’ve transformed FOW into a game I want!!!
Its a cracking game. not only is it fun to play and highly collectible but its extremely addictive.
How does Dave look so good, and yet Warren looks like he just came off a 14 hour flight?
Now we’re talking: (fairly) historical action at FoW FtW. I salute you, sirs!
this series really wants me to get back into flames of war, its a great game to play and you guys make it look easier to learn then i remember
Glad to see the doctor rubbing of on Warren
Despite Warrens protests to contrary were starting to hear him dropping in little snippets of History knowledge.
Just think of it as fluff mate but it’s for real
Let yourself go as there’s more than enough stories to last a lifetime.
It’ll be interesting to see where this leads.
Yeah come on Warren don’t deny yourself mate
Come on, I’m loving FOW now and am involved. I need the book! Also Dave looks marvellous!!!
Another great video guys. I am really loving the FOW FTW series. My gaming group have just started getting into FOW in a massive way and these videos are a great mix of the game and the history involved. Keep them coming.
I love your historical discussion about paratroop operations x). But the parachute landings did serve a vital purpose in WWII. It allowed small but elite forces to land and either hold or destroy an objective. Casualties were far higher than many other regiments in the army, but what they could achieve was breath taking. Look at the Belgium landings in 1940. Or the invasion of crete. Both of these saved valuable time and resources for German forces, allowing them to rapidly conqueror both countries. And Normandy was probably the most successful mass landing. If you want a real debauchery look at Market Garden where nearly 4 entire divisions of paratroops were landed enmass in Holland with horrible results. But i digress, brilliant show as always chaps. Funnily enough my mid war force Im going to use all parachutes in on the first turn
The “Lady Gaga” of Historical Gaming is a good title for Warren!!! Nevertheless, I am glad that Dave and Andrea are taking him to school!!! :>)
Go For Broke!!!!
The HauptmannV
Dave is not the doctor!!! Is Tom Hanks in disguise!!!!!
That game sounds awesome can the Germans change history?
Who will design a uniform for Warren ?
Answers on the back of a fiver.
Really enjoying the series, can’t wait to see what shenanigans you guys get up to in the D-Day assault.
As a Canadian I must proudly point out that we pushed so far inland that we had to stop and wait for everyone else to catch up.
Good on you Zacman. You should be proud. As Eisenhower said, The Canadians are the best soldiers the Brits have…and their American!
Before I get any hatin’…I’m a proud Brit living in Canada.
Dave is awesome, He really is a proper historical war enthusiast!
I was rather interested in Flames of War, now I want to play it more and more!
I’ve watched this series with interest. Like Warren, I can take or leave the historical side of things. I would like to try Flames of War however am limited by the poor financial state of having a young family. Please, please send me the box so I can try it out. I will paint a 28mm German for Warren’s Nachtwolfen as a ‘spiritual’ leader and send it back in thanks.
I am painting 28 mm WW2, I wonder how different would be painting 15 mm…
Bernohn.blogspot.com
I’m looking forward to the battle!
Great video guys. I would really like to give this game a go.
Pretty the starter box is awesome value, just starting FOW and loving it.
great video guys like always, i got my D-day pack the other week, they are great books for sure, warren you need to get some german 88mm flak gun’s, they are deadly and you’ll love them!, cant wait to see your D-day battle, keep up the good work 🙂
Blasted Beasts of War, yet another epically cool looking miniatures game I can’t afford.
Warren, find more movie references!
Dave…keep on being cool!
You could always take it to the next level – travel to Normandy and see the battle sites for yourself. I did this a few years ago and walked along the Sword, Gold and Utah beaches. It really puts it into perspective to what the allied troops did. There is also the German perspective where the batteries were plastered by Allied shipping; that must have been terrifying. Once you get a taste of this, it makes you want to find out more…
Btw nice vid!
That’s a great idea. I would love to do that.
Sadly the big pond (Atlantic Ocean) is too vast at this time.
Love the fact that you guys are covering some FoW stuff 🙂
Well, I could really do with winning this to get started. Thanks for the vid folks ;0)
Awesome video, I FOW FTW is currently the best “thing” on your website…
Agreed.
Great series guys well done, let battle commence, and a fun game to be had:).
Cool series!
I like the blend of Warrens love of the game play and David’s quiet appreciation of the history.(And love of the game play.)
But what makes me smile is when Warren discovers how awesome the history is.
He has gone from what he saw on films to looking in history books!
(He may even read something out of one some day!lol.)
I can not wait for the next Battle it sounds awseome!
These videos are making it harder and harder to not get into FOW.
When is Warren getting is own axis uniform, that would be awesome
Anyway i’m trying to push a couple of buddies of mine into FOW, and its all thanks to Warren and the magnificent David.
And Warren just looks like hes been on campaign for weeks, trying to keep true with his 0% witnesses policy… 2 hours of battle and 2 weeks of ruthlessly rooting out them surviving cowards out of their hiding places… it’s hard work, but someone had to do it
Another great show guys love the series
I think David needs to work on his Poker Face and bring in a bit of air support, since Warzan thinks he’s on the Egde of Glory. Get Sgt. Alejandro and his boys on the Telephone to the RAF to keep the Germans heads down and they’ll Just Dance up the beaches. I’m not sure we’ll get Warren in a uniform…..Just Born That Way….
I’d already been considering getting into this FoW, this series tipped from that from a maybe to a “soon”.
I feel that these lists need a bit of Aussie flare in them Dave’s Paratroopers should be dropped by RAAF pilots :). Now I have to go out and buy Open Fire as this series has me hooked great job guys.
great video Warren and Dave.. I got into FOW after watching your videos and planning to start a small club next couple of weeks. cheers!
Well done Warren. We’ll be getting you to a fully by-the-book list before you know it. If you want to take 6 StuGs then there are lists that can do that, they just don’t have everything that your chosen one does. Remember taking extra of something means you need to take less of something else so you want the 6 then try and find a list there that allows you to have 6 (there are plenty) and work to that. Try and resist the temptation to adjust a list to suit what you want to take 🙂
Keep learning and enjoy. Before you know it you’ll be able to read the big words to go with those pictures 😉
For future videos I am going to be cracking out the Irish Guards (i love the film Bridge too Far) and the idea of running Michael Caine in FOW its just to much to not do.
Sounds like something my erstwhile co presenter would say… seems we are influencing each other hahaha.
I loved the Greek Resistance ladies they looked like they would fight all the way to Berlin on their own!!
That is why I love reading books like that you never know what you are going to find.
The beach landing will be a challenge for sure, but I have faith in my Division
29 LETS GO!!!
My mother in law is Greek and when I was last over there she showed me some of the mountain spots her Grandmother or mother used to use during the war.
Blew me away.
Irish Guards yay. I started painting my Open Fire tanks as Guards Armoured Division.
Just got the new books in the slipcover…. I opened them wit my teeth as well… 🙂
I had the early v.2 books, skipped the last set of Normandy books…. these new books are really packed, and the historical “fluff” puts the entire Normandy Campaign timeline into an easy to grasp formula,,,,
Warren should be wary of the historical aspect, it has me dressed out as a Canadian,,,, FoW was a partial influence,,,,, There should be more film-wise to show what the British and Commonwealth forces accomplished during the war…
I actually watched :A Bridge Too Far” when it first came out in the theater… I agree with David on Michael Caine…..
As well as thousands of scattered paratroopers and glider troops, the allies dropped decoys – small dummy paratroopers with fireworks – strings of bangers that would sound like gunfire.
I love the smell of new books in the morning – it smells like D-Day. 🙂
Yes they where named Ruperts…
Which is also the nick name of British Officers… humm an jab at them maybe hahaha
Open fire
how is dave not Prime minister yet? i would vote for him!! keep on being awesome Dave!!!!
Another great FoW video guys. You two have some great chemistry onscreen! These videos prompted me to get OpenFire and its just arrived from wayland! Can’t wait to start digging through it!
Can’t wait for the next episode!
@warzan I hope that dress is going to be period correct! If Dave can go to some effort I think you should too!
A great classic film for Warren to check out, is “The Longest Day” Which encompasses quite a bit of the action on the sixth….
cool books
Love watching FOWFTW cant wait for more
Every cloud has a silver lining, every bush has a paratrooper in it.
Great Series, I picked up the D-Day books this past weekend and have enjoyed reading through them. It will be great to see if Warren can repel the Yank hoards or will Dave bring baseball, hotdogs and apple pie to the beaches of Normandy. Love the videos and the series, keep them coming.
Loving the brief touch on some of “Hobarts Funnies”. I always think that them and other things like the dambusters upkeep bombs are just great ways of British thinking the way around the problem instead of throwing more men at it.
Looking forward to the battle.
Another cool episode, good to see ideas for how to expand from the starter box!
I’ve loved this series, please can I win an open fire box set so that I can join in…?
Love this series. I wish i could get my warmachine group into it. Maybe an open fire box set will do the trick
Warren, I have a movie recommendation that you might like: “Storming Juno.” It follows the stories of a Canadian infantry platoon and a DD tank crew when they landed on the beaches, as well as some Canadian paratroopers that landed behind the lines. It’s a History channel production so it doesn’t quite have all the Hollywood special effects as Saving Private Ryan, but it’s still pretty impressive. It also has some interviews with veterans after the movie, but I think those might be more Dave’s thing. :p
Dave, you and Warren talk about the problems that DD tanks have for command distance if they get spread out during the landing. I’m not sure if you already have it, but take a look at the “Normandy Battles” book (it came out in October). It has all the special rules for both amphibious and airborne assaults, and page 24 talks about the rules for DD tanks. If they swim ashore each tank counts as independent team, so the command distance won’t be a problem for them.
I will have to watch Storming Juno I have heard of it but never got around to getting down and watching it thanks for the reminder!!!
On the DD Sherman tank rule yeah I read that since that video had been made (Normandy Battles is a great little book and I think BF have some of the missions on their website atm so check them out!!)
Its a good thing and a bad thing, good that as soon as they are on the beach they can start fighting but then its one tank, one tank on its own might as well have a big ol bulls eye on it, easy pickings for guns.
There lays the problem…
Nice video!! I hope to see how its goes on!
Enjoy the stugs!!
Really enjoyed another edition of FOW FTW. I like how not every episode is a battle and some talk about the other aspects of the game.
I got the Market Garden/Bridge Too Far set a month ago (now try to mock my Firefly Gerry!) but would love to get the D-Day set too. I was thrilled to discover that included in the History (sorry Warren you gotta try it) they highlight some key characters in the specific theatre you are reading about and can actually field them in your armies…who needs Logan Grimnar now…give me Lt. Col Frost.
And here is the man himself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdvpA94XSv0
And here is the man himself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdvpA94XSv0
Yes, D-Day is a great set of books being to huge with great lists and covering even more than it already did.
Airborne tank lists is a stand out one for me as its a little bit mental…
But I keep going back to the Market Garden book,
Little fun fact about that one of the many characters in the book is called Major General Roy Urquhart, his plans for a battle where slowly pulled apart by bad luck and people not wanting to “rock the boat”… but that’s for another day. His has a rule called “License To Kill” and if you have seen A Bridge Too Far you will know he was played by Sean Connery (and if you need any more explanation than that… well…),
I found that very funny and rewards people for watching films and playing wargames 😀 :D:D:D
And in reply to the above post Lt.Col Frosts perimeter is a REALLY good list and he makes his forces very hard to kill off in the defense and you get to have Anthony Hopkins running around whats more to love.
Please if you don’t watch the whole film watch Hopkins on the roof telling the German he wont surrender one of the most string pieces of dialog ever 😀
The look on the Germans face is one of the best bits of subtle acting too… damn it I’m off to watch the film again.
Oh and Eliot Gould is in it… 😀
I love fow but need my club to get into it. Great video guys, keep it up.
Dam good show Chaps!
OMG this could trigger me getting the v3 rules! Especially if I had the D-Day books!
I have 15mm Germans and Soviets which I may dust off and do a beach landing on the Baltic!
Keep it up guys
Pretty much obsessed with FoW now. Thanks and keep the battles coming!
Roll on the battle itself! I’m taking quite a shine to FoW
Consider me hyped. Really looking forward for the next episode!
warren could try the horrible histories
Warren, you looked great. Dave, you are an utter disgrace …. Wait… is that the right way round???
Can’t wait for this battle.
I noticed in the Overlord book… British Armoured Company (Page 90), make a force based on the 4th Armoured Brigade, and you can have a Squadron of Fireflys (with some rules attached). Whether it is a sound tactic to disabling heavy armour or use them to allow the rest of your units to push forward.
Yes they found in Italy that there where not many Tigers or Panthers so the heavy calibre 17pdr wasn’t really needed as an integrated tank support to a squadron, they grouped them together to call upon if heavy tanks where found.
Upon moving to Normandy they still used this tactic but after a while with the much wider use of Tiger and panther tanks they too added Fireflys back into squadrons.
For army lists this book is THE one for odd and fun things to try, you could never be bored with the different set ups and rating for each of the divisions (im looking at the 4th American for the first time and their assault company rules are bonkers good) and the Indian Head Division with every base rated as a SMG team makes me want to try that too.
The Brits in this book are good but you have to be willing to bite the bullet in some cases reluctant veterans can be hard to use sometimes.
But if you read the book you can find many good lists (I personally like the Airborne tank regiments and the Sherwood Rangers)
Oh and Churchill Tank regiment if you want to see the guy tear his hair out put down 9+ Churchill tanks lol
I was re-reading through the book… I don’t think there will be many British 7th Armoured players unless they are doing something historical due to the Motivation rating. I know they have the Special Rule that they can re-roll failed bailed-out attempts etc if they suffered NO failed rolls the previous turn… Personally, I can’t see that coming into play much. I think the Guards will be a more likely force with armour.
I do want to like the Airborne tank regiment, but Tetrarch’s? Even with the Littlejohn adaptor aren’t overly strong for an HQ section so they will be hidden at the back and using Cromwells to do the fighting. It is a possibility I guess….
I want to Open Fire!!!
love the show cant wait to play.
I love this series! Made me get back into Flames of War again and also brought a couple of new players into the game after watching the show.
Dave is THE coolest host on BoW! Got me inspired to play Americans after show #4 🙂
I love Warrens enthusiasm and cool ideas for playing with what you got. Keep it up guys!
James Caan’s “salute” in the “A Bridge Too Far” movie was the Highlight for me…..:D
I regret that you don’t say much abaut Polish resistants 😛 but other than that it was one of the major BIG operations during WW2
Gene Hackman is overly cool in this film as well……….
the GERMANS GENERAL THE GERMANS!!!!
Hehee, if half his infantry units dont go down first turn, I want my money back.
But seriously, I am looking forward to this. I’ve seen some AMAZING DDay boards on various Salutes, I always wanted to actually play in one of them.
I’m really loving these videos, guys. Warren seems to be getting more into the history of it, and Dave is just as dapper as ever. If I had the spare money and opponents, I would snap this game up in a second. I’m really and truly looking forward to seeing your two combined arms armies go against each other! I just hope Dave doesn’t leave any air support or DD Shermans behind!
Maybe you could get Warren to watch “The Longest Day” for some more D-Day fun. Sure, it’s from the 60’s, but it has John Wayne AND Sean Connery in it!
Hi guys watching these videos on flames of war as got me hooked to it and I thinking of doing a british parachute company but cant find the rues for doing the land and you tell me in which book and what page please.
Try this 🙂 http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/Scenarios/Seize&Hold.pdf
thanks alot Warren
Now I’ve got Warrens infectious enthusiasm for history and a new guy at our club.. so BANG I’m back into Flames massively after a few years. Even ran out to get the D Day books as soon as they turned up. Thanks guys, I love hearing about your journey into FoW, it’s like rediscovering it all again.
Great video, makes me remember my days of playing Steel Panthers.
There is a Pegasus bridge scenario on the battlefront web site. 1 day I will get my arse in gear to make a suitably big bridge and play it. One day…. 😉
Another great vid guys, really enjoying the series. FOWFTW!
you guys are giving away so many prizes at the moment its great. realy enjoying flames of war for the win,
As some one mentioned Lt Co Frost.
I have to mention the interview with Anthony Hopkins (who played Lt Col Frost in the film A Bridge to Far.)Where he said Lt Co Frost told him not to run in the film, as he ACTUALLY WALKED between the buildings WHILE UNDER MACHINE GUN FIRE.
As he did not want to let his chaps see Jerry making him run,as he though it was bad for moral!(A definition of Fearless Veteran by any standards!)
But the director said the film going public would not believe it..
Another great video. I love watching the videos for inspiration and checking out what is new in the wargaming world
enjoyed seeing warren talking about the history… Dave you are teaching your padawan well
Great to see Warren getting into the historical aspect a bit!
Love the enthusiasm! I’m definitely going to have to get a copy of open fire and get up to speed on the new rules. I wasn’t overly impressed with FOW when I tried it years ago, but seeing these FOW FTW videos it looks like the mechanics (and the models) are beautiful!
Dave, you mention the Sherwood Rangers there is a good book (I know, sorry not a film:)) about them called “By tank into Normandy” by Stuart Hills. They started in Normandy in Sherman DD tanks, also fought along side the 82nd AB at Nijmegen (so a good use for the open fire box set). They would make a very good Sherman based force.
“By Tank Into Normandy” is a great read…. the exploits of the unit’s chaplain put the book over the top!
Just can’t wait to see the battle. Will the germans at last be victorious at the Beach of Normandy.. This is really a great show, which has got me very interested in FOW. Keep up the good spirit 🙂
Can’t wait to see the beach assault game.
You guys are doing a great job, thanks!! Warren`s thanks for taking the game a little more serious this time lol! You guys are really helping to get people interested in this game, that besides being a great game never is being one of the cool games that the people plays around! I start really to love your videos! I can`t wait for the battle report!!!!
If some body is really interested in this game you should check http://www.wwpd.net is a great web site whit all kind a stuff and ideas for battles reports, models, army`s and more!
Thats totaly excelent. I started before the openfire box, so i would love to have one of the v1’s.
Send the box set to me. 😉
Count me in! I wouldn’t mind getting my WWII history nerd on in tabletop form.
I’ve been getting into this game lately and am quite interested in the whole historical side of this game but the guy I mostly play against is much more like Warren and just constantly wants to mess around with forces and change up things. I think this kind of approach might suit us too actually. I’m really into Hellboy and BPRD so maybe I can stand to mix things up and create some scenarios that will interest both of us!
Looking forward to seeing how these forces play out in the next vid.
jumped in on these vids late, will have to go back and check out some, first one I saw was the tank battle which was quite entertaining to watch.
Seriously want to start this up. Just trying to convince someone to buy 2 boxes with me!
The new Laural and Hardy. Its great watching you guys bounce off on another. You’ve helped me greatly as I begin my life as a Wargammer
The books are really great and I really like the D-Day setting. I am looking forward to the next episode! 🙂
I cant wait to see the Epic Normandy Battle! I can’t wait for the terrain–I am sure it will be awesome! I think Dave should dress in his full invasion outfit and Warren should dress up as a German Officer. Heck maybe Dave can pull off a win this time since he will be attacking from all directions! Go Allies!
Enjoyed this episode, great to see the use of army lists and explanations of how they work. I was also impressed with Warren and Dave’s agreement to be a little flexible.
A few (potentially accurate) historical facts. The more inexperienced units were deliberately picked, as Warren commented the commanders knew that veteran troops would just refuse to do what was asked of them. Green troops didn’t realise the risks and were a lot more gung ho. There are many accounts from Allied soldiers who survived that basically say ‘afterwards we never fought as hard as we did that day. That day we didn’t know to be scared. After that day, we were always scared.’
The assault waves were carrying more equipment than those troops following. The reasoning seems to have been that the following waves could collect stuff they needed from the first wave casualties.
The Americans, contrary to popular belief, wanted a lot of the specialist armor the Canadians and Brits had – in fact, they requested it. However, there was a mess up between the expectations of the Brits (that the Americans would produce or alter their own versions in the states and ship it over), the Americans (who didn’t realise that the Brits had such limited production facilities for making the requested equipment) and the time factor. Many British units were getting their specialist equipment literally days before the invasion date.
By and large there is a lot of trivia about that ‘day of days’. For me the thing that sends a shiver up my spine is those men on Omaha beach. It wasn’t officers leading me on, it was the NCO’s. Corporals and Sergeants getting small groups of sodden terrified survivors together and saying ‘We’re damned well not going to die here’.
That should, of course, read “It wasn’t officers leading _men_ on, it was the NCO’s. Corporals and Sergeants getting small groups of sodden terrified survivors together and saying ‘We’re damned well not going to die here.””
*blush*
Have you guys seen the paper terrain invasion boats? They are a great cheap way to get the for a mission you;ll probably only play one a year.
hay guys awesome work! really good way of getting people to try something new with a starter set or two!
Warren,
Don’t know if you saw this in Atlantik Wall but considering you want o use all the StuGs there is a force you probably can. The SS-Panzerkompanie on page 184
HQ can be taken as 1 or 2xStuGs
SS-Panzer platoon (can take upto 4) can have 3,4 or 5 StuGs
So assume the HQ with 1 (110pts) and then 4 combat platoons each with 5 (545pts each). Brings you to a force of 2290pts
Warren don’t believe Hollywood history it hates the facts getting in the way of there version of how only America was in the war. But The Longest Day is one of my favorite films. 😉 Dave you forgot to say why so many DD Sherman tanks sank and who lost them. The Americans launched there DDs 3 miles out to sea in a heavy swell, utter madness. The British launched there DDs much closer to the beach within 1 mile I think and most got ashore. There was an excellent documentary about DDs and Hobart’s Funnies not long ago worth a watch if it comes on again. I can not remember if it was on free view or the BBC.
