Looks to be another good hobby intro series! Looking forward to the chat with the BF folks! Rock on!
So interested in flames of war always looking for an excuse to start
i never really thought about flames of war but this week may change my mind depending on how many helicopters i can field
Loving the fow coverage, time to dig out my apocalypse now soundtrack and get building a 1st squad 9th cavalry, remember Charlie don’t surf
Looks like there’s going to be interesting week ahead. I really love these intro series.
I think the missus will get upset when I squirt paraffin over the dining room table and set light to it whilst listenin to Paint It Black for that authentic napalm attack feel.
I might risk it anyway.
sounds like its going to be a fun week
Great, now I have to start another system as those helicopters look good.
It’s a shame this didn’t happen a month ago because then I would have recommended that anyone in the London area pop over to the yearly War and Peace show in Kent (it usually happens in late July). Being able to see all the military hardware from the 40’s onwards ‘for reals’ can really inspire you for Flames of War, Bolt Action and so on.. but the re-enactments in the main arena are particularly awesome. The Rolling Thunder group always put on a great vietnam display with armour, plenty of infantry on both sides and enough pyrotechnics to leave your ears ringing!
Also, for a slightly different take on Vietnam, check out Apocalypse Meow. I’ll ruin the surprise for you now. Yes, they are animals 😀
as a person who has played a bit of the Vietnam stuff i can promise that you will enjoy it. The best thing i found about it was how fun based rather than competitive it was. The whole game has the feel of getting together with a mate to fight a fun scenario using as many toys as humanly possible. THE GAME IS NOT DESIGNED FOR COMPETITIVE PLAY unlike their WWII stuff and you must remember this. The rules do play very well though and after a few “go slow” moments there easy and have obviously been play tested a lot particularly the helicopter part.
soo good i watched it twice lol
Gooooooood Morning Vietnam…..It’s O600….What does the O stand for, O my god Warren is getting into History.
Aw man. This looks good. I might have to give Apocalypse Now another watch.
I have a feeling a friend of mine would want to reenact Ranbo with this game.
This is going to be so cool! Cant wait until the next show 🙂
Yeah, Nam week started!!!
Too bad my choppers won’t be here for another week 🙁
This will be a great week indeed. FOW Vietnam rocks. The book is awesome and the game plays good and is intense. More so than WW2. Don’t forget the movies ‘Hamburger hill’, ‘We were soldiers’ (airmobile battle) and ‘Catch 22’. Lots of armour and even an all helicopter force for the free -world powers. Don’t be put off by the infantry oriënted PAVN, they have ambush, booby traps and lots of nasty surprises for the free -world powers. The game is indeed not ready for competetive play, but this does not make it any less fun, even more i would say.
Cant wait for the rest of the week
“You’ll be tired of us by the end of the week!” -> Challenge accepted.
This week is gonna be great. Already informed my girlfriend, that we will be watchin lots of Vietnam-Movies this week. All the classics and new ones. Today will be: We we’re soldiers.
I agree with bothi, I have found your FoWFTW series to be very entertaining. I doubt I’ll be bored by week’s end.
looks like its going to be a great week
Hamburger Hill is one of my favorite Vietnam movies. I’m really looking forward to see how this came game plays, if it captures that Insurgent vs counter insurgency feel.
as wars go,i’m more of a WWII guy!mostly because i’m a complete fan of the planes from that war!!!
Well well as an fow Russian Player i have to help the fellow communists in vietnam so i hope who ever field them will bring honor to mother russia, ähm i mean to vietnam. 😉 just kidding, but i am looking forward to hear about the lists and about the missions in the book. I have to say my knowledge about the nam war could be better so dave pls give us some details about the background.
my local gaming club ran a flames of war week a while ago and a number of people got into it from there but I had heard complaints about the quality of the books, watching this vid though the books looks cool
I have not played FoW Vietnam but have recently just starting playing FoW and loving it.
I can only think Vietnam would be better but I am afraid it lacks any depth but I will keep watching for the week and see if my opinion changes!
Here’s to a good week of coverage!
I already play FoW but up to now it was only WWII… Even the revision of Nam didn’t make me think of trying it.. You guys make me think about exploring the Nam war, being one of the most important modern war conflicts…
Thanks for another great vid guys.. Lov you (platonically)
Shouldn’t that be Platoonically? 😛
Well, I guess I’ll have to watch a Vietnam movie, and since We Were Soldiers is the only one I own, that’ll be what I watch. I like that movie because it shows the decisions of both commanders throughout the battle. It’s nice to have a look at the NVA’s perspective rather than just treating them as the shodowy guerrillas assaulting the Americans.
They need to mock up some battlefield reporter figs to get imbedded with the units.
Looking forward to this coverage. Whenever I run Nam games I always have a soundtrack playing in the background, find it really adds to the atmosphere of the game.
HODOR!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuk8AOjGURE
i want win an army real bad and if i do i will massage warrens feet.!!!!!!
I think that goes way beyond wanting to win an army… we are into Fate Attraction territory there 😀
Fatal Attraction* sorry
And who says it wont be me picking the winners…. My feet are sad LOL.
On the Nam front I hope people enjoy the week Im off to listen to Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel
AND WE WOULD ALL GO DOWN TOGETHERRRRRR
This should be a good week got my CCR already playing
It sounds interesting, Vietnam is a difficult set for a wargame, let’s see what they did…
Oh boy, Warren – you look just like I feel after a 6 hour game in W40K today (after it rained a bit everything started to evaporate and it was hot like hell). Alas, my Space Wolves prevailed against Chaos Marines and their treachorus Guard allies. 😉
Rambo seriously let himself go.
Enjoy the gaming and watch out for the punji sticks
Cheeky lol 🙂
Warren definitely suits the part. Off to the military surplus store for some camo gear! He needs a cigarette packet stuck in sleeve of his t-shirt.
Definitely think you’re right in that it could be a hobby in itself, its a fantastic era historically but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone with Vietnam era stuff for wargames – who knows. Could maybe even do a supplement using much the same stuff with a few extra bits – Flames of War: Yom Kippur War or something! Soviet stuff for reenacting the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan right the way through to the 1989 fall of communism (Hungary, Romania…). Excited! So much scope for this, love the coverage Beasts of War is giving to historical gaming atm
This will be awesome!
Guys, this will be awesome ! can’t wait to see all this !
Looking forward to this week, please don’t make me buy too much
i haven’t really had a good look into the setting but hopefully these videos can get me gaming vietnam. it would be intresting to se the changes and diferences bettween this one and the ww2 version
Hamburger Hill is on of the great Nam movies and one I have never tried of. Great body chaps
Great vid! I Love WWII flames of war I bet Vietnam is awesome as well.
BoW of ‘Nam Week…. we were winning when I left.
Lol
Don’t see the point at playing FoW Vietnam, wasn’t it just US planes bombing and bombing and bombing again and again, for a final ratio of 50.000 against 1.000.000…
Does it play differently than fow to capture the different tactics?
I feel sorry for Warren’s wife and children if he’s subjecting them to non-stop Nam films! LOL
nam week is going to b sweet
Not been watching anough BOW lately, but this looks like an ideal series to get back into it by
“Get some music from this time” this is pretty much most of my youth
Stop it BoW! I am constantly checking out your videos, keep this up an I will have to get a backstage pass!
Will Dave wear his head gear – metal helmet with a kol aid pack on the side?
Great content at always guys. Please please please do a review of the pc game battlefield Vietnam. It is an awesome game that lets you battle in Vietnam while playing all the best music of the time. You get in a jeep hit choose the track u want and it plays and if your opponent is playing musician a vehicle you hear it and it gets louder as he approaches and quieter when he goes away from you. Try it, it’s an Oldy but a goody.
Nam week, By the end of the week I’ll be able to set up a game in Itchycoo park,
Who’s in?
I’d like to get my hands on them Americans, if for no other reason than to yell “Get to the choppah!”
Feel I should mention here, that I was in the very last Vietnam draft, and my number was #27. Vietnam wargaming, just proves what a stupid idea it was in the first place.
Some of the Viet Cong had been fighting the Japanese in WWII, so they had, like 25yrs experience in guerrilla warfare, before the US took over. Stupid.
God I love Hueys. But still got all those Open Fire teams to paint up first.
Looking forward to the rest of the videos about this it seems pretty fun
Ah, good work on the topic so far…. The game has many options of play from footsloggers, to D.A.T.s to the flyboys…. and all in one teeny-weeny book………
are they going to do a FOW for the win for this week
i would love to start the Americans mainly due to the helicopters and their deploy anywhere on the board. you could deploy around 75% of the heli around the objective and the rest behind the enemy troops as a detraction
just had a bigger look into the nam american and the cobra heli is a beauty i need a list with like six of these.
Bring it on dudes….looks good. rocking the head band man.
BoW has become my go-to site for introductions to new games. Love the fact that you increasingly cover Historicals, hope that’s a trend!
NAM WEEK NAM WEEK NAM WEEK
Looking like it will be an awesome week!
Looping forward to this.
Looking forward to this one. Looks like a great setting for a game.
Another great game week on BoW, this game seem really cool!
Hmmm, I think I will start playing FoW Viatnam during this week.
Nice to actually see the Vietnam-version of my favorite game 🙂
We were Soldiers, another good Nam movie and i think some of the best music ever made came out of the Nam era and context – a time of great social change particularly in the US.
Can we make sure Dave is given some new dice to play with 🙂
loving the videos…and music!
Sounds like a good intro to the game. You might even get me interested in this modern history stuff.
On a sidenote: it is actually nice how gaming can increase knowledge and understanding. Who knew you could actually learn something from playing with toy soldiers? 😉
Sounds like this week will be a blast
I still don’t have FoW. It could be a good start. 🙂
http://www.retronaut.com/2013/08/2nd-annual-atlanta-pop-festival/ While people were being shot at, in Vietnam. I was, 15. Historical reference.
I’ve played Vietnam scenarios in 20mm, before. IT is a fascinating historical period, which is re-living itself, in Iraq, and Afghanistan, now. Or close enough .Something about, there being no clear battlelines.
“They drew first blood…” 😀
Staying tuned 🙂
Cool Video!
I was already thinking about getting into FoW. This makes me wish I had more ready cash.
Theres too much WW2 exposure in every area of gaming and as such the setting has lost a lot of its appeal for me. Vietnam is something I havent had much exposure to apart from a few movies during my childhood. This interests me more than standard FOW.
I recommend some of you get a hold of Wargames Illustrated 299, there’s 6 pages dedicated to the biggest, most badass and beautiful Vietnam Mega-game ever in that issue!
If it’s as good as FowFTW I’m sure I’ll end up playing it. There’ll be any even higher chance if I win one of those armies.
Can’t wait 🙂 come on Dave start telling warren some historical lies he’ll never know ! Like experiments by mengeler ! Trying to create the x men 🙂 co’s he was sorta ! Bring out the fluff 🙂 and hitler was an alien with two brains and one ball 🙂
Air cavalry! Air cavalry! Air cavalry!
Hmm, they are great looking Models, but I’m not sure how I feel about Wargaming in a realistic setting.
Still, Maybe I cna Concert them into something 🙂
Really torn between FOW and Bolt Action….
Can’t really justify doing both but they both have great points, this coverage isn’t really helping me resist FOW
Looking forward to following this. More money going to battlefront from me I expect!
Flames of War WWII system always looked nice to me, but moving into Vietnam, that’s even more attractive. I really like the more modern weapon systems. Also, seeing Dave in his purple shirt, I keep getting that image of Peter Griffin walking though a the Vietnam jungle in a clown suit (“You guys are stupid, they’re going to be looking for soldiers”).
Looks like a good week of videos ahead. Can you convince anyone to collect PAVN though as surely anyone getting into Vietnam is going to want Air Cav first and foremost. Or is that just me?
Full Metal Jacket….that is all you need to know!
I just started looking at this game, thanks for the videos!
Hmm
For my immersion I ought to get back into scratchbuilding the interior for my Airfix 1/72 Cessna 0-2A kit.
Have a few Vietnam War subjects in the stash but still missing a Thud and a Spad.
(F-105 Thunderchief and Douglas Skyraider respectively)
Looking forward to the coverage.
I love the smell of Napalm in the morning…….. It smells like victory!
this will be interesting 🙂
I suppose most people have learnt not just Vietnam but WW2 from the movies and it’s not until you start reading that you realise the war was vastly different to how the cinema showed it to be.
There are a few movies of course that are correct/true but they are in the minority. But having said that all I can think of now is “I love the smell of Napalm in the morning”
I like it when Warren and Dave team up – they are fun to listen to 🙂
Seems to be a interessting game. I never played a historical wargame so far but it could be nice experience. The choppers will be fun I guess.
Im chomping at the bit to get my club into Vietnam.
Would love more people to play FOW in my area, I think it’s a great game!
Looks like this could be the sort of week to get me properly interested in FoW. Cool mini’s and an interesting sounding ruleset.
really excited about this just catching up on namm week
Looks really interesting looking forward to it
Nam Week. Great idea. Looking forward to learning more about the setting. The music is a great idea. As Warren said, being born in ’75 I know very little about it.
After starting Flames of War I hammered Netflix for all their wwII movies.
Guess its back to Netflix for their Nam movies now.
This is my rifle, this is my …..
This is really cool. I didn’t really look at this range of miniatures at first, but that’ll probably change.
Very keen to try FoW Vietnam out!
i hope i can keep up with this flames of war is super
looking like another great series from both BoW and battlefront! can’t wait for more!
have really enjoyed the WWII vid’s. Am greatly looking forward to the new set and the direction they take you
I really hope the Commies get more mechanized units, I realize they didn’t have many but still the option would be nice.
Cool coverage guys!
random comment to win stuff
Really excited for this week. Never played any historical wargames but this is sound like it might win me over!
Why not an anzac prize?!
I love the smell of napalm in the morning!!
You weren’t there man! YOU WEREN’T THERE!
Really want to play a lot more FoW-Nam, such a cool spin on the standard rule set.
I’m a bit late to the party but this looks so good! Can’t wait to watch the rest!
I look forward to watching the rest of the videos. Had to wait until today as I have not had time all week. I myself have an Ironclad Battalion and Infantry Battalion all ready and painted up.
At last, I have time to watch this, looking forward to NAM WEEK!
Definitely piquing my curiosity
Man ‘Nam Week is badass, I am glad they did this.
Best theme week yet guys. Thoroughly enjoyed it all. Especially nice touch with the music. And i liked the multiple unboxings spread over the week.
I’m going on a copy+paste mission now to maybe win an army. If not, i’ll be buying one anyway.
Been a great week, thanks guys.
