Crimean War Cossacks Regiment - Warlord Games

Crimean War Cossacks Regiment // Warlord Games

We start with the Crimean War Cossacks, who, just like with all of the Regiments shown here, can be picked up in smaller packs as well as these larger sets. The famed Cossacks were some of the best light infantry and cavalry that the Russians could call on, and now you can in your armies.

They were particularly fierce and their skill in the saddle made them great scouts. They weren't considered to be excellent in formal, open battles but they were inspiring and would be a fearsome foe for your enemy to face, especially when bearing down on them with lances at the ready.

More of the Russians are covered by their Crimean War Russian Lancers.

The Russian Lancers, also known as Uhlans, were uniformed in the Polish style. They wore the tall four-pointed ‘czapka’ hats and greatcoats, which contrasted with the brightly coloured British on the battlefield. Despite their utilitarian look, their training consisted of a lot of wheeling and maneouvering which was ultimately designed for parade ground prancing rather than the battlefield.

You can also enhance your Russian cavalry all the more with the addition of the Crimean War Russian Dragoons.

Russian Dragoons took on a role which was very much in keeping with the traditional role of dragoons as mounted infantrymen. They would often dismount to then rush into the fighting and so their uniform was, in turn, practically identical to that of the Russian infantry, namely greatcoats and helmets.

Crimean War French

As well as the Russians, we also got a look at some more French sets coming out to support them in their Crimean War battles.

Crimean War French Generals & Officers - Warlord Games

Leading the way is the French Generals & Officers set. Unlike the British, who famously had some rather lacklustre commanders and officers amongst their ranks, the French weren't that bad! This set features three well-known commanders that could also be used as generic leader figures if you prefer.

The set gives you Marshal Pellisier, commander of the French from 1855 and the victor of the Siege of Sevastopol. You also have General Bosquet, who led the French at Alma and witnessed the Charge of the Light Brigade. Whilst watching, he said "C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre…" - "It is magnificent, but it is not war: it is madness". Lastly,  you have Captain Thomas, who acted as Bosquet's aide-de-camp.

Marching before these commanders is the French Line Infantry.

France found itself fighting alongside their traditional foe, the British and was a key ally when facing down the might of Russia during the Crimean War. Around 300,000 French troops marched to the Crimea to take part in the fight, clad in their blue tunics and bright red trousers. They were often armed with old, smoothbore muskets but they weren't too shabby at using them, so they should be able to hold their own.

Any good army of the period needs artillery to support it and a full Crimean War French Artillery Battery is also available from Warlord.

The Crimean War featured a modernised and reorganised artillery arm under the new Valée system. This reduced the number of different types of guns the French used and organised them into groups for field and siege use. The most common gun was the 12-pounder, presented here, a reliable and versatile gun that could support the French as they advanced.

British Riflemen

To cap things off, we also have some releases coming out for the British. A set of miniatures representing a British Rifle Brigade in shakos is available with both a full Command and a set of Riflemen.

The British Rifle Brigade sent two battalions to Crimea. They fought at the Battle of the Alma, leading the advance across the river and the regiment also saw action at the Battle of Inkerman and during the Siege of Sevastopol. Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the regiment over the course of the campaign for their valour.

The Brigade features your British Rifles wearing their traditional shako in a period before they moved to the soft forage cap. With plenty of British miniatures already being available for use in Black Powder for the Crimean War, this gives you some solid elite options for supplementing your force.
