Dark Age Basics Coming From Medbury Miniatures This Month
January 2, 2026 by brennon
Medbury Miniatures are starting off 2026 with some great new figures for those looking to take on the Dark Ages in 28mm scale. The initial building blocks of armies are on the way with a bunch of Light Armoured Saxon Warriors.
Saxon Warriors with Sword & Shield // Medbury Miniatures
Medbury's idea is to connect the Vendel range to the Late Medieval range, bridging the Dark Age gap, starting out with Saxons and Normans. Everyone needs core troops and so that's what this collection handles well, offering up Saxon Warriors with either sword and shield or spear and shield.
More will be on the way for these Saxons, giving you more options for heavily armoured troops but as it stands, this should be enough for a good shield wall. The miniatures have been designed so they can be solo-based but also multibased if you want to make the aforementioned shield wall.

If you already have some of the Vendels from Medbury, then these could also work as basic troops for your warbands. The obvious difference would be in the helmet designs but there's no reason you couldn't be cunning and use these as some of the most basic troops in your warband or army.

Looking ahead, Medbury are going to be releasing some ranged options for the Saxons, plus heavy armoured troops to use as the elites amongst your collection. In an effort to bridge that historical gap mentioned before, Medbury will also be filling in the blanks eventually for the Early Crusades and the Early Medieval period later on down the line, too.
Could you be tempted to dip your toe into the Dark Ages with Medbury's new offerings? They are currently available to Patreon supporters this month as 3D printable files but you'll also be able to get them in metal soon!
