WiP Games and Miniatures has announced the newest set of Historical wargaming rules to join their collection for On Bloody Ground. You can now dive into some wargaming during the period of The Wars of the Roses and pledge yourself to either the Yorkists or the Lancastrians!

The Wars of the Roses - On Bloody Ground

The Wars of the Roses // On Bloody Ground

This is the tenth book in the On Bloody Ground series that dives into a specific period and modifies the On Bloody Ground wargaming rules to suit a particular conflict. In this case, the team at WiP Games and Miniatures are covering the Wars of the Roses, which took place between 1455 and 1487, setting the Houses of Lancaster and York against each other.

In the end, the conflict would end the male Lancastrian line of succession and end up producing the first of the Tudor monarchs, who would then go on to rule England for 100 years. With that in mind, you're giving into a period of brutal conflict where you'll have to plant your flag for one side or the other.

The new rules will feature five period-specific army lists that match the period. You'll get options for running the Yorkists or the Lancastrians, Richard III, Henry Tudor and the Yorkist Pretenders. So, even within a conflict where you'd think there are only two options for you to choose from, there is still some nuance in the choices you make that might hinge around you playing a specific battle out on the tabletop.

The Wars of the Roses - Winning A Battle // On Bloody Ground

If you're unfamiliar with the rules for On Bloody Ground, they have been designed to be a "fun and quick set of rules for friends" where the mechanics suit the period but don't get themselves bogged down in too much heavy detail. They share a lot of DNA with the classic rules for Warhammer Ancient Battles and you'll see that as you venture into the mechanics.

Games often take place with between 100 to 150 28mm scale figures per side, where units are arrayed in regiments and unit removal is used to show the attrition suffered by your army during combat. This doesn't mean that you can't play with smaller scales and blocks of infantry; you'll just have to use dice or markers to remind yourself of casualties taken.

Combat is, as the name of the game would suggest, bloody, where units will typically clash until one side has been destroyed, run away, or you've fought to a standstill. This means that as a general, you really have to think about when and how you commit to a fight.
