February 26, 2026 by brennon
If you're playing the Dark Age/Early Medieval skirmish wargame Pillage by Noodle Wargames and Victrix, then you might want to download their FREE new magazine! Shieldwall Issue #1 is now available, featuring insights into Pillage and previews of what's to come.
Sheildwall Issue #1 // Pillage
Shieldwall has been designed as a way to highlight Pillage and introduce some brand-new options for your games, all driven by the passion of Guillaume Rousselot. With this in mind, it features a look at new products for Pillage, including the new Medieval Crossbowmen and Archers from Victrix, plus their Market Kit, which is perfect for those doing a bit of pillaging of local towns and villages from their longboats.
FAQ // Pillage
Shieldwall also features an in-depth FAQ for Pillage, which provides clarifications from the rulebook released last year. As well as clarifying rules from the main rulebook, Shieldwall also features brand-new content. In this case, we have the expansive Alba Campaign, tracking the unification of Scotland.
Alba Campaign // Pillage
This extensive campaign covers a number of scenarios that chart the process of this unification, featuring battles across Scotland and England. You'll find full forces cover the Scots, Welsh, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons and a great breakdown of how to set up your games. This looks like it would be really, really fun for you to play through.
Talking of new content, Shieldwall Issue #1 also features a preview of the upcoming Late Antiquity supplement that will cover the period of the Fall of Rome from the 3rd to the 7th Century.
Late Antiquity Preview // Pillage
Guillaume talks about new elite units like the cataphracts as well as new weapons like the fearsome francisca. You will also get a sneak peek at some of the factions covered by the expansion, namely the Sasons, Merovingian Franks, Eastern and Western Romans, Picts, Visigoths, Huns and the Romano-British. Conveniently, all of these miniatures are or will be covered by the Victrix Miniatures range.
Lastly, Shieldwall also features some hobby tutorials! For example, there is a great breakdown of how to build a motte-and-bailey castle!

The hobby also extends to the painting of the new market set from Victrix, giving you some pointers as to how you can bring this to life without it looking drab. A great magazine packed with insights and some teasers for the future. It's very nice that it's free!

Free magazine? Don’t mind if I do!
Free pillaging!
Wasn’t Pillage the game with slop art? Cos the magazine cover looks suspicious too.
Say no to the Clankas!
A person is credited for the illustrations on the first spread of the magazine. Maybe they learned that people don’t appreciate when artists don’t get jobs : )
Awesome to hear! A win for artists!
FANTASTIC idea (pun intended), a free Fanzine for both the rules and miniatures. Partly a sales punt, but mostly a great resource for the game and overall period. It all looks rather professionally done, and it’s FREE (which leaves more money to spend on the miniatures. Good job Noodle Wargames and Victrix 🙂
I remember when BOW did their own magazine! that was cool but i think it was just too much on top of the normal journalism and then the store too.
