DUST Warfare Unit Cards Have Arrived
October 31, 2016 by stvitusdancern
Paolo Parente's Dust Warfare '47, the gridless version of DUST Weird World War II game has gotten updated unit cards for the new iteration of the game. There are currently three sets for the Allies and three for the Germans and one set for the Mercenaries.
In the Allies sets, you get the Rangers, USMC and Vehicles and Aircraft.
The Axis sets are the NDAK, Vehicles and Aircraft and lastly the Wehrmacht and Blutkreuz.
The format of the cards looks similar to the last set of cards, obviously with some updates and other changes, I am not sure specifically as of yet, but as soon as I get them in I will post an update to let all of you that are interested know.
These can be ordered through DriveThruRPG.com as print on demand, where you place the order and they will print them on poker sized cards and send the to you.

With the latest update coming from Kickstarter that the last of the outstanding orders and stretch goals being shipped, we should be able to play the updated version of Warfare alongside the new DUST 47 which is coming soon. A final edition of the new update rules is available for download on the DUST website.
Have you tried the new rules yet?

honestly this is insulting at best. “oh look we killed the two previous installments of more or less the same game but be a good boy and just buy the cards again!” And the open contempt DS shows by not only to ask for more cash from old time players instead of offering free update pdfs, no they also split them into even more packs for an even more obvious cashgrab.
By the way – so its “warfare” again? As in “Warfare” the game paolo never really showed any interest for, and was more of a ffg thing?
Obligatory: Where is my stuff? Still haven’t gotten anything……….
+1
Where is my stuff ?
Players may access all the files free of charge in our DropBox. Contact me for more information.
First, DUST Warfare is not part of Dust Studios and I know we all got burned on the fiasco that was the Babylon Kickstarter.
Dust Warfare is from DustUSA and they have licensed the images, rules and name from Dust Studios. They do distribute Dust products but are a Licensee to DUST Studios, not employees of the company. They are only affiliated in the same way Modiphius is with Dust Adventures.
The cards for Warfare are not Tactics or Tactics Gridless. They are a reworking of the original Warfare stats, which were always different in most ways from the Tactics game. Heck, they still use the old Dust Dice, not the new ones that Tactics does. The cards also include a ton of Real World vehicles and equipment that Tactics and the original Warfare didn’t have. They are also completely free to download from the Facebook page [https://www.facebook.com/groups/dustwarfarefans/]. Just join the group and ask for access to the Dropbox files. Drive Thru RPG happens to have a Print On Demand option that has allowed DUST USA to give players the option of adding physical cards to their games that a new company like DustUSA could not afford to mass produce on their own.
This is not a grab for cash by anyone. It is free. You have the OPTION of getting physical cards. Are the cards nice? I think so. Are they worth the money? Again, in my opinion, Yes. Will they allow me to add a Cromwell and a couple Bren Carriers to my Allies? It will! Do I have to drop money there? No, you do not.
I am not trying to stir the pot here. I have opinions on this rules set as I was a playtester for Fantasy Flight Games, back in the day, and Warfare is my favorite version of the rules for this setting.
I hope I have helped with the understanding of this announcement and hope to have the chance to play some of you in Dust Warfare in the future.
Lots of thoughts pop up:
If the naming takes multiple clarifications and still causes confusion even among long time players – how are new players even supposed to find “their” right dust?
So your target audience are old Warfare players? That is brave to say the least, i remember feeling quite burned as a warfare player even back a couple of years (2012?) when dust was still alive, after checking out the then new rulebooks just to find out that all the new units might be great for DT but didn’t make much sense in warfare. So it’s admirable that finally someone has taken it up to fix all this – but again it might be a bit late for that.
As for getting new players into it – how would that even work? Many basic units are not longer available nor have been for a very long time. You’d have to tell anyone interested “just search ebay”. Not really convenient or trust building. And you might have had nothing to do with or worse might be yourself afflicted by the ks but the name sticks and it’s “brand value” is terrible. You literally saying “oh look we went through the ks and are still fans! you just need to be willing enough!” is not helping. The players left for a reason.
Last but not least: If you create any revenue for DS, and by licensing you do, than you are subject to the same critic anyone affiliated with DS is.
Warfare doesn’t have to become gigantic, but the players deserve consistent leadership and direction. With time, it will continue to grow.
Original units are being released again. In fact, Zombies are now out. Try store.dustusa.com or dustgame.com. Players, old and new are joining us all the time.
Having been a Warfare player and having worked directly with BF on the Warfare side of unit development, I am perfectly aware of the red-headed stepchild syndrome from which Warfare has suffered.
We are all aware of the KickStarter disaster. When you have a flat tire, don’t just push the vehicle in a ditch. Fix it and move on.
Informed criticism is fair and welcomed.
@ratata to be fair these cards are for the Original Warfare version . I first thought these were the new cards for DUST 47. The guys at DS contacted me and we clarified the article. The guy offering these is independent from DS but has been allowed to create these for those who still play warfare.
The problem is that dust warfare never had the Paolo prefix as it was Made by ffg, so the title is somewhat misleading and if it is Made with licensing from ds they are responsible. Still the Main point Stands – this should just be an update and it Shows the confusion around the “games”.
Fun point: does ds even have the rights to the original warfare? Afaik ffg still sells their surplus Stock.
Yes. DS owns the rights to Warfare. I have the license to continue Warfare from DS.
Dust Studios does have the rights, they acquired them from FFG and FFG is just clearing out back stock.
Forgot to add that again my problem is NOT with BoW and I wish everyone working there a fun halloween!
Dust Warfare ’47 is the updated version of the original Dust Warfare rules. I work directly with Paolo and Olivier under license from Dust Studio.
The basic mechanics of the game have not changed. Then why the update?
Dust Warfare players wanted it. A whole community needed the attention and were willing to support the revision through play testing. The revision draws upon almost two years of work in development and play testing as well as invaluable input from the community.
Many older units were not in line with new releases and not competitive, often relegated to shelves. Unit costs have been realigned and corresponding abilities are justified in those costs.
Also, the development of historical units for all three factions has been an important part of our work. One of the key points of Warfare is the ability for players to include readily available 1/48 scale models in the game. Now players can easily bring those models to the table with standardized costs and include them in the unit formations. Also, this allows for the process of “Dustification” where models are converted, replacing analogue guns with Dust weapons. Imagine a Panzer IV with a laser or an Easy Eight with a phaser – this is all possible in Dust Warfare ’47 with new weapon sprues available directly from Dust Studio.
Yes, but why haven’t you released the SSU cards yet? Two reasons:
1. Time. Other than the world-wide network of play testers, I am the only person designing and laying out the cards.
2. The SSU units, being the last to appear, were not as far out of line as the original Axis and Allies units. Although, we did address, early on, the problem with transport helicopters being too expensive so they could be play tested.
The good news is that all of the SSU will be available before the end of November. Many of the SSU vehicles are already available in the DropBox.
Why so many card decks? There are many more available units now. Also, multiples of the unit cards are included to allow play of the new platoons and companies.
What about dice? We use the original Dust dice with two hits and four blanks.
So, what are some of the updates?
Updates are often thematic. For the Allies you will find the Rangers have an Airborne Platoon now and upgrade abilities on the cards. For example, the Recon Boys may upgrade to Toccoa Raft and Recondo Tab – giving them amphibious and hiding abilities.
For the Axis you will see units like the Recon Grenadiers have a choice of upgrades like Spaehtruppen or Stosstruppen which provide movement advantages while operating in the German homelands or assaulting in urban environments, respectively.
Yes, but why the choice of upgrades? You can field your units in a variety of ways, adapting to a variety of scenarios with or without the upgrade cost, but you are not stuck with a high-priced unit with abilities you may or may not use. The inclusion of these upgrades also allows derivation of very interesting scenarios, for which Warfare players have a proclivity of generating.
Air Drop rules have been updated allowing any unit to be Air Dropped, but at a cost. Units classified as Airborne get a bonus to when attempting to land on a desired target. Units are subject to drift and damage when Air Dropping.
Dust fix-winged aircraft which have those cool VTOL ports and no game-play reference, well, now hover rules have been included. Also, fixed-wing jets move a lot faster than helicopters, providing the challenge of coordinating air strikes with limited time-over-target.
Tesla has changed. Now it is a deadly forced with which to be reckoned and competitive with phasers and lasers, with lightning attacks jumping to all units within a 4-6″ radius from the original target. Clustering of Allied or Axis units is extremely dangerous in the face of the SSU’s Tesla, encouraging more planning and movement on the part of players.
Vehicle movement is not always 6″ as a base. Some units now move much faster at 7 or 8″ or even slower at perhaps 5″.
The imbalance of S4 units has been addressed. Certain weapons like the MG48, DSHK 12.7mm and the .50 Cal Victory MG are now capable of hitting S4, but S4 is still very tough as it should be.
Damage Resilient is now called Tough As Nails for Soldier units but still functions as before. However, Damage Resilient now functions to reduce critical hits on the Vehicle Damage Table.
More Heroes can now be used in a game under the Band of Heroes rules which allow the formation of a Soldier unit comprised entirely of Heroes.
There are many new platoons for all factions, best of all – real armor platoons. And you may also build companies now using the Company Command rules.
What is forthcoming? The SSU cards will be available before the end of November. Updated overall rules are available in the DropBox, albeit in draft form, but we will begin compiling an all-encompassing document shortly. New unit cards will be added to the DropBox as the products from Dust Studio appear.

Two years ago this would have been super exciting and a MUCH needed update. A year ago this might have saved my dust circle. At this point though, while i applaud your personal effort and enthusiasm, the train has left the Station for good. Just jugding by the impact Bolt-Action and k47 had just in my Areal (flgs is restocking and selling allmost all k47 Stuff on a weekly basis), the unresolved ks issue and seeing dust stuff on ebay for 5 bucks per Walker – i’d say getting the players back is gonna be a though sale. Especially the original warfare players, which – lets be honest – never got great support after ffg left and which were among the First to leave dust behind. Any Trust is gone completely, and i’d honestly would have higher hopes for your project if Paolo was not involved at all.
I have to agree with this. It’s not the Dust Warfare licensee’s (the person the wrote the new version of Dust Warfare) fault that this just came out too late for me. If it was only last year it might have had a chance to see the table with my Dust gaming group. After all, I joined it playing Dust Warfare which converted over to Dust Battlefield. The new Dust Warfare might have even worked out four to six months ago. However, with the arrival of Dust 47 minus the unit cards (which I believe still aren’t out months later) I don’t really see that group getting together. Or at least I don’t feel like bothering to show to find out.
That group is pretty much splintered now. Last time I made the visit, the group switched over to Warmachine. A game that I just have no interest in. I have been playing Bolt Action more locally instead. Additionally, Bolt Action using historically based lists and scenarios has actually replaced Dust Warfare as my favorite miniatures wargame. I don’t even feel the urge to play Dust anymore. I still have my models for it should that change, and I am willing to play games of either version of Dust Warfare or Dust Battlefield (but not Dust 47).
Maybe someday I will want to breakout my Dust stuff and play some crazy Weird War 2 games, but that isn’t going to be anytime soon. I also think that Dust Tactics (in all its forms) has been given more than a fair chance to succeed. The zombie corpse of that game/game company has lumbered on for quite sometime, but I don’t see Dust ever really growing again. Instead, I see it rotting away maintained by a ever shrinking core of diehard fans. I can’t even say that it is a shame at this point. Dust Studios (and sure Battlefront if you want to be fair) has mismanaged the game well past the breaking point. In a world where it seems a new miniatures game comes out every week, I cannot see Dust becoming revived.
Dust “Warfare” is a licence by Dust Studio given to Gregory Withrow.
DUST USA is the official distributor of Paolo Parente’s Dust 1947 in North America and has absolutely no link to Dust “Warfare” whatsoever, apart that we sell the minis Warfare uses also.
The official cards and book for Paolo Parente’s Dust 1947, the latest version of the game, are to be sold to retailers and player around the world in November. They will also be available online on our website (and official Facebook group) for free download.
