I discovered this evening that rattle can primer melts styrofoam. Oops!

I should be able to salvage quite a bit as I didn’t try and prime everything in one go but there were casualties.

Any suggestions for quickly getting a durable base coat on styrofoam? It doesn’t have to be perfect but does need to knock the white back to a grey or brown.

It actually makes a pretty great texture. I’ll see if I can work this into some future project. It actually makes a pretty great texture. I’ll see if I can work this into some future project.

coat with Mod Podge mixed with some black (or whatever color) hobby paint. The cheap stuff works fine as it is just to put a base color down on the article. the Mod Podge also will make a very solid coating to protect the item.

I tried that but due to the price choose a different option. Another option is to take simple craft paint and mix it with wood glue or Mod Podge and water, this creates a cheap and effective primer. That is what I did with my tiles. Seems like a lot of work, but if you use a big brush (Mine was an inch wide) it goes down surprisingly fast.… Read more »
