Space Opera - A Dropfleet Project
Battlefleet Gothic - Advanced?
I played Battlefleet Gothic quite a bit back in the day, so originally I was thinking this game was like advanced BFG. I mean, Andy Chambers designed both rules sets and there is a lot that is reminiscent of the old game. That being said, I really loved the concept of this game. My problem with space-based games has always been representing a 3D environment in 2D. The abstraction never really worked for me. Dropfleet solved this issue by the fact that all the battles take place in orbit. Effectively your Z dimension has been reduced to orbital levels – basically just two levels: high orbit and low orbit, plus atmosphere which is the death of most capital ships. Yet having craft that can operate in atmosphere is essential to accomplishing your missions. Add to this the fact that mission objectives are not necessarily about killing your opponent’s ships, but rather securing planetside resources. This brings a whole other aspect to traditional space games.
