About the Project

Lately, I've been running war games every weekend with members of the community via web conference. Players log on and play wargames with each other in real time, regardless of location, and we usually have at least a couple spectators as well. Many times it’s been Darkstar, but we’re also running wargames in Panzer Leader, Arab-Israeli Wars, and now Valor & Victory.

BoW/OTT community members @brucelea, @damon, @davehawes, and @rasmus have taken the plunge, leading battalions across thousands of meters of desert, starfleets in pitched battles across the heavens, or vicious firefights in the jungles of Vietnam, all without leaving the comfort of their home.

Hard-core, old-school command-tactical wargames can now be run (complete with spectators and recordings) in real time, with BOTH PLAYERS moving pieces across THE SAME virtual game board, thus maintaining player agency, speedy and instant results (no play by e-mail), interwoven turn sequences, any questions / feedback instantly received and addressed, and with the game being virtually recorded as it goes, a ready-made battle report can actually be created as we go.

All of this without the players having to install any new software on their computer, on any platform (PC or Mac). All that's needed is to agree on a time, a handful of dice, and a bellyful of courage!

Every weekend can now be a boot camp! All without costing me thousands of dollars in airfare, too!

Oriskany Jim takes another try at a military historical film review. The subject this time is the Academy Award winning classic “Platoon.”

Of course the movie was iconic from a film perspective. But how accurate is it really? And more importantly, what can you use in the movie as a basline for accurate wargames and hobby?

Oriskany Jim and Alex finish up their game of Valor & Victory (Modern Expansion) – playing a scenario set in Mogadishu, Somalia some time in 1993.

A helicopter of 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment has gone down somewhere in the city, and it’s up to the Rangers of 3rd Battalion / 75th Ranger Regiment to get them out.  Of course, the hostile militia of the Mohamed Farrah Aidid’s Somali National Alliance might have something to say about it.

Consider this a “smaller” version of Operation Gothic Serpent (the infamous “Black Hawk Down” incident), recreating the smaller, aggressive operations that took place in and around Mogadishu throughout 1993.

Tank Duel on the Damascus Road: “The Arab-Israeli Wars” Battle Game (Part 2)

@Oriskany and @Elessar2590 (Another Historian Wargamer) finish up their game of Avalon Hill’s classic “The Arab-Israeli Wars” – set on the Golan Heights during the Yom Kippur War of 1973.

This war started with Israeli forces absorbing Syria’s gigantic initial onslaught through several days of some of the most intense tank combat since World War II, after which the Israelis went over to the offensive.

Pushing beyond the Syrian side of the Golan, Israeli armor and mechanized infantry were soon driving up the Damascus Highway at places like Hadr and Mazra’at Beit Jinn, which is where this scenario takes place.

Here is the review of yesterday’s game of Valor & Victory, depicting the worst platoon leader of the Soviet Army trying to lead the unluckiest gang of motorized riflemen in the history of human conflict … into the hellish meatgrinder that was 1980s Afghanistan.

Just close your eyes, Comrade. It’s time to go your happy place …

Good evening, everyone! Join us on Sunday for the return of Sunday Live Stream Wargaming on the Sitrep Podcast!

damon and oriskany face off in a game of Valor & Victory Modern Expansion – with new maps and units to recreate an engagement during the Soviet-Afghan War of 1979-1989.  Fought with pitiless savagery on both sides, this was in many ways “modern war” at its worst.  Regardless of your flag or faction, suffice it to say you don’t want to wind up as a prisoner in this one.

Please consider coming by on Sunday, 2PM East US time (7PM UK Time) to see how Damon and I do at the live gaming table, and how this latest expansion of Valor & Victory Modern Expansion works out!

Singapore Showdown Naval Command Wargame Part 2

Damon and Oriskany are back to finish their game of “Naval Command” by Rory Crabb. The scenario is “Singapore Showdown,” an imagined near-future scenario where the UK’s Royal Navy comes to blows with the People’s Republic of China in the South China Sea.

Singapore was once a key part of the British Empire, vital to British interests in the Pacific. Even now, the UK keeps a close watch on international developments in the region. This is especially true given the strategic importance of the shipping lanes between the Persian Gulf and the heavily-industrialized economies along the Pacific Rim. Recent Chinese militarization in the nearby Spratly Islands has naturally caused a heightening of tensions in the region.

In today’s hypothetical game, a British “merchant ship” RMS Emerald Trident (in reality an electronic surveillance vessel) has been discovered eavesdropping on Chinese naval message traffic. A Chinese air strike has hit and damaged the vessel, which now limps south under pursuit by Chinese intelligence vessels intent on boarding her. Chinese warships have also been sortied, and a Royal Navy destroyer and two frigates have been sent to cover Emerald Trident’s escape.

An “international incident” is inevitable.
