About the Project

A couple of models from Rude Minis' "Make Your Miniatures Collection Great Again" Kickstarter. They arrived in early 2019 and it's about time I got some paint on them.

This is a couple of models from Rude Minis’ “Make Your Miniatures Collection Great Again” Kickstarter. Rude Minis are the brainchild of Benoit Loic Cosse, of Rackham fame.

Whatever your views on politics, it’s just a bit of fun and an opportunity for me to paint something weird.

I’ll do the little goblin Trump first, try out my colours, then tackle the larger model.

I’m starting with the goblin. He’s got smaller skin areas so I can try out my colours as a simple basecoat/wash/highlight/highlight scheme. The ogre, with his larger skin areas may need some blending, which will inform how I paint the little fella.

So far so standard. One thing of note is my wash using paint instead of ink. I’d originally planned to use GW Seraphim Sepia. I switched to paint as I thought I’d be blending on the ogre; using paint strikes me as a bit more useful in case I end up mixing it with Jokaero orange.

Next stop, the big lad!

Having a decent recipe, I started on the big Lad. There are a wealth of details on this model: some really disturbing, all excellent. But that’s for the future, today’s all about that orange skin tone.

With the larger model I felt there was more variety in the shadows. I put a heavier wash on areas such as the face and hands as these would have the deep lines of shadow. I expected the definition on areas like his arms would maybe be too strong, so I was glad I’d shaded with paint.

I started with pure Jokaero Orange to recover the high areas. Yes those dark shadows on the arms are too much.I started with pure Jokaero Orange to recover the high areas. Yes those dark shadows on the arms are too much.
I took the highlights almost up to pure VMC Dark Flesh but was losing the ornage tint I wanted. I made a thin glaze of Jokearo Orange that both restored the orange tint and toned down some of the shade. Happy now.I took the highlights almost up to pure VMC Dark Flesh but was losing the ornage tint I wanted. So that’s the orange skin. I’ll now do the (irrelevant to this tutorial but important to me) rest of the minis and get back to you all.

And here we are. The irrelevant to the tutorial, but important to me stage of the project: finishing the models.

I’ve not much use for either of these figures, though they’ll get shoehorned in to Frostgrave or Rangers of Shadow Deep at the merest opportunity. Maybe a specific encounter to go up against a greedy, egotistical but oh so dumb ogre.

Their lack of utility is a side issue though, I love these two minis. The detail on the ogre is fantastic. My favourite is the pig tied up on his back; I loved using my regular skin recipe for the hog to contrast with the ogre’s orange.

And finally ... on the telly.

Finishing off with a YouTube vid, which admittedly does include the phrases “skin the colour of a hangover piss” and “don’t think about Don’s nipples … Don’s nipples yeurgh”. Be warned.
