Fantasy Flight Preview The Deadly Slave I For X-Wing
January 24, 2013 by brennon
If you're looking to expand your fleet in the X-Wing Miniatures Game then how about Fantasy Flight's sneak peek at the way Slave I plays. Check out the model below...
Now that is a fine looking piece of pre-painted miniature. It's not often you get to say that but Fantasy Flight really do pull out all the stops when it comes to their games.
You can fly this around on your board as either a standard ship, or maybe you fancy adding Boba Fett into the mix and letting the deadly bounty hunter loose?
Will this be arriving at your starport soon?

Full details of this ship, and the rest of the next wave of ships, is already available. The entire contents of the box, all card text and new rules included, has been online for over a month. Links to these resources are found in the forum thread below.

I have a Firespray at home after taking second in one of the local Kessel Run events. The Firespray is okay. It’s really not that great a ship to be honest. It has some interesting offensive capabilities, but it’s far easier to kill than the Millenium Falcon so it’s kind of a glass cannon, only without the maneuverability advantages that most Empire ships have. The mines are completely useless, partially because they trigger on friendly units as well as enemies. They’re basically just another asteroid on the table with slightly higher consequences for flying through them. And the fact that you only get to carry one makes them a lot harder to tactically use effectively.
All in all, the Republic definitely got the better of the two large-base ships. The Falcon’s 360-degree firing arc and significantly better defensive capabilities makes it ultimately a much better ship than the Firespray is. I think they could have made the two ships more equal to each other if the Firespray were more maneuverable, but that’s not what FFG chose to do.
The smaller ships in the new wave of releases are both pretty awesome though. Empire players definitely need to get their hands on the TIE Interceptor (which performed much better than I thought it would when I was using it in the last round of the tournament). The A-Wing is possibly my new favorite ship of the game. Republic players would be crazy not to pick up a few.
Like your reviews @mpopke I’ll be re-reading them when i get into the game proper.
Thanks. I think the biggest thing about the Firespray is that at the 100pt level it’s just dead weight in a list. It really relies on synergy with other units. You either need a lot more fast and disposable units to herd your opponent (TIE Fighters), or some fast moving elite units to outflank your opponent (TIE Interceptors) or support units to help give you more capabilities (Darth’s TIE Advanced with Swarm Tactics or Squad Leader). At the 100pt level it’s hard to squeeze all of that in your list along with the 40–50pt Firespray.
Whereas the Falcon is basically the source of list synergy. It’s the unit that provides your list with benefits rather than requires you to add support to keep it useful. So it’s a lot more useful in a 100pt list, and can actually make a 100pt list better if you choose the right pilots and crew.
The other problem with the Firespray is the stupid mines. They’re a late game weapon, totally useless in the first 2–3 turns, but your opponent will be hammering on the Firespray so hard that it’s not likely to survive long enough to make good use of them. It needs to be in a list with more ships (to keep the enemy from focusing all of their effort on the Firespray) to really make itself useful.
In larger games on larger tables it has a lot more tactical usefulness, but at the standard tournament level of 100pts it’s easier to make a strong list with the various TIE ships than it is with a Firespray. I like using the ship in really big games, and it performs much better then. The Falcon performs well pretty much all the time. The 360 firing arc with three attack dice is the real strength of the ship. Combine that with the pilot and crew members that have damage mitigation abilities, and it becomes really frustrating to kill in spite of it’s single defense die. If someone throws a YT-1300 down without those mitigation abilities, it will die much more easily, but I’ve never seen anyone do that. There’s little reason to.
Combine the Falcon, piloted by Chewbacca and equipped with a shield upgrade, with Wedge Antilles and Swarm Tactics, and you have a ship that can absorb hits, takes no critical hits ever, and almost always fires first, usually at ships that can be destroyed by three attack dice in a single lucky round. It’s brutal. The Falcon is basically Darrel-grade cheese when set up properly. The Firespray is just a fairly good ship.
I dont play the game but would buy this any way…. I F–K SH-T UP LIKE BOBBA FETT!
Boba Fett, Boba Fett! Where!?!
Sexy offering from the lads at Fantasy Flight. Sure to be one gracing my desk in the near future.
