New Forge Father Fire Power from Mantic
January 18, 2012 by brennon
Video now added above! Ronnie talks through the new set and what to expect in the future.
The Forge Fathers from Mantic Games' Sci-Fi range Warpath are going to be getting a nifty upgrade kit in February. So Mantic showed off the finished and painted models on their blog to whet your appetite.
Not bad looking models to add to your squads, and available in February, so not long to go! Wargamers who have already purchased some Forge Fathers will be glad to know that Mantic also intend to sell bags of loose components so you can upgrade your existing squads with these heavy weapon options.
What do you guys think of the finished articles?

The dragons breath looks like it had a malfunction or a pineapple on the end. The rocket looks like a must have for your forces.
I do like the rocket, the flamer does have a bit of the oddity about it lol. Maybe my patented lazy drybrush paint scheme could actually make it work lol
You can do it!!

The more I see of the Forge Fathers the more I’m convinced the design aesthetic is fantastic but the execution isn’t always there yet. I’ve got some Stormrage Veterans and they are lovely models, but the sharp detail I see on them doesn’t seem to be here – take the legs on the Dragon’s Breath guy for example. The edges are soft and the WIP picture on Mantic’s blog shows one kneepad with one notch below the square and the other with two, and I can’t work out why. The Mjolnir launcher torso has a blast shield/targeter made from a coat zipper, but that’s actually a good thing here since it has a cool shape and plenty of sculptors use things like washers or brass rod in their greens. The problem comes from it being tilted rather than being at right angles to the launcher so it looks off. The metal enclosed helmets also seem to have less detail than the plastic ones.
All that said…there’s also plenty of positives. The new kits will provide much more variety to a Forge Father force, alleviating the ‘clone trooper’ problem, plus I love the honeycomb-shape layered plate legs with the ‘dragonscale’ tabard. The new weapons will also help those proxying their Forge Fathers as Marines – now they have flamer, missile launcher, heavy bolter and heavy flamer options.
To sum up – I like where these are going, but they aren’t there as a whole range yet. The common factor in my niggles? Bob Naismith is miles better sculpting in 3ups for plastics – the undead line is proof beyond words of this.
