Time for a look at what the guys from Corvus Beli have been up to at gen con, as Wildchevy has set up his camera to watch our friend Carlos present a seminar at Gen Con 2013,
The future of Infinity looks better and better, Dire Fores will add a nice layer of immersion in the Infinity background and interesting new entries on the factions army lists.
The new ITS season looks like a big improvement over the already good present ITS season and the Warcorps program is something much awaited by the community.
But I don’t understand why so much was cut out. Many of the previews of reworked models aren’t here. The Morat face lift with awesome new armor design for example. Including the shots of the upcoming Morat aggression starter box. There is a poster here called Dormicom or something. He has the whole thing which is like 2 hours. Don’t know why so much was edited out.
Because streamlining it for a wider audience is always good, especially when the complete video is available elsewhere. Not everyone wants everything. Not everyone has the time.
For example, my video tutorials are about four to eight times as long as the final edited video… Thank goodness for @dignity !
Aren’t you happy to have learned maths and reading in school with textbooks that weren’t encyclopedias of all things maths and letters from day one ? Aren’t you happy that you can first get a book to familiarize yourself with a subject, then get deeper info later on ?
What exactly is your problem with this concept ? It’s just that people here (professional video-makers, I might add) know that people don’t respond well to videos that are several hours long. They simply don’t tend to click on them as much if they’re over a certain length. People don’t have the time, or the leisure.
You say “there’s always fast forward”. I say… no. People are lazy that way. I know from experience that this only applies to SOME viewers, especially on youtube. Way back when, there used to be hour-long sections of painting tutorials that I did. A lot of people actually commented and complained that it was too long and that they HAD to skip of fast forward. Some still do with 20 minute tips videos, mind you.
Bottomline is : people don’t want to fast forward. They CAN, but some complain if they HAVE to, and some just don’t, and skip watching the video entirely. And we don’t want that. When a video is several hours long, it’s not going to get that many views, and nobody wants that.
You say this is “niche”… I say, let’s try and expand the audience for these things ! Let’s not frighten new viewers, let’s not alienate people who have just found out about Infinity and are still unsure if they want to watch this for hours. When you see a two hours long video, you don’t think “i’ll skip to the good parts”, you tend to think you’ll actually watch it all. And you’re afraid you’ll miss something important if you fast forward. It’s also annoying if you have to fast forward unimportant stuff.
That’s why people in Youtube comments post things like “speech really starts at 1:45. you’re welcome” for people to skip to. without this, people don’t skip to it.
As for the “who defines who wants what” comment, it really made me laugh… I assure you there is no conspiracy to hide information here ! If you disagree with the selection of information in the video, or doubt it, you can certainly get to the source. Here, a selection had to be made in this very dense presentation… That’s just the way it is.
More information is always available for those who want it and search for it. The complete videos are available on the forums, from user Doremicom, as a matter of fact.
This is how news works : you see an article, you read it, but it’s only a synthesis. of course, it is, because it can’t do anything but sum things up. No one thinks it strange when they have to “dig deeper”. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don’t, and most people (maybe unfortunately) don’t. The point is, it’s not a strange new illegitimate and horrible practice. It’s the usual way of things, and, as explained, it has its reasons.
This is a news-site, we do journalism (shocking as it may be, this is what it’s called) on wargaming news. It means we do synthesis and analysis of what happens in the wargaming world. We don’t always transmit everything directly, we don’t publish everything… And yes, sometimes there is a selection, and yes, you may disagree with that particular selection sometimes.
We don’t always know (in fact, we hardly ever know) what is relevant to YOU. Everyone has different interests at heart, and every single person will select information differently. We can but paint in broad strokes what seems cool or interesting to us, and to most people.
It doesn’t mean it’s not normal or beneficial to select or edit.
And if you disagree with the process of selection in and of itself… well, I’m afraid you can’t escape it in teh information age, and I don’t see how you would wish to, because you’d quickly be flooded in information, what is “relevant to you” drowned in silly trivia.
I hope I’ve made it clear what it is we do here, and why some things are edited out..; And I hope you don’t think that because it’s edited out, that it doesn’t exist or that it is hidden.
There is no attempt to troll here. At least not by me. Merely a comment on the presentation of certain information. Having experience with the film and television industry here in the US including working on shows, I know the value of condensing information. As informative as it may be watching paint dry in a video it’s still watching paint dry. So this is obviously cut in the interest of time. But if it’s news and it’s cut then it ceases to be news and becomes an editorial.
I say this only because had I not stumbled upon this elsewhere then I would never have seen the whole thing. If for example Wildchevy had shown some quick clips with a link to the entire piece then I understand that format as it is used extensively over here to tease the audience into the full story. But what I originally objected to was that there was no indication that this was only a part of a greater whole to be viewed. In doing so a decision was made as to what was important and what was not. I would only see what the author wanted, not all that was.
Please note that these comments are only meant to help the community in presenting information and improving the quality of this site and it articles. I have been a fan of BOW for a long time and only wish to see it grow and evolve.
Well, @spaderfish, all journalism is a selection and/or an opinion. It is, however, definitely NOT an editorial, since this is indeed recounting fact.
I take it you don’t agree with the way the selection was done (or that there was a selection at all). Nevertheless, it has proved useful already : a selection HAD to be made for Youtube viewers, and the final result is faithful to the jist and main purpose of the presentation, even if some of it had to be omitted.
And yes, I’m saying HAD TO BE. People don’t do the editing out of the goodness of their hearts, or because they like extra work, you know that. Trying to make videos more accessible is what the Beasts of War people do… Please give us that credit. Sometimes, good information has to be edited out (and yes, even in my videos, some of what I would consider “good stuff” ends up on the virtual cutting room floor), but it’s for a greater good.
It’s all about “killing your darlings” to make the whole thing better.
But of course, this will never change your mind. Anyone can tell you’re not in that frame of mind. I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree !
Just joking. I’ve read it all and I agree with you. You guys at Beasts of War are doing a great job and time is indeed a thing wich comes in short supply.
Keep up the good work guys and, oh! Just one more thing: Infinity really rocks! This Dire Enemy range looks awesome! So much good ideas are coming out of Corvus Belli!
Gotta say that I love the down to earth attitude of the Corvus guys. I just hope that they can get big enough to be able to invest cash to make plastic (not restic) minis one day.
Metals and plastics are two different worlds. With metal casting CB can make however many prints of a sculpt that they need and recycle all the leftover material. Whereas with plastics they would have to hire out to a Chinese company with a large batch order. Plasics might be easier for a hobbist but they dont work well for some companies.
Am I the only disturbed by the idea of the second phase of the Infinity fiction and how the model range is going to reflect that? Call me a whiny crybaby but the idea of my faction becoming a ‘shadow of its former self’, and possibly losing models, worries me. Some Yu Jing players were up in arms about Ko Dali, what if some factions lost even more than just one model?
On a positive note, Dire Foes looks like a fantastic amount of fun.
I will have to agree with @elromanozo, the video edit is short enough to digest and to the point.
It illustrates CB is a down to earth company that acknowledges its success, but have not had their minds blown by it, putting the longevity of their company and the fans above the risks of rapid and maybe uncontrollable expansion.
It shows the new themed release witch is dire foes and illustrates what advantages and advancements it will have on the overall game experience and showcases a few things from the future.
Morats were not the main course of this seminar, they are great and showcase how well 3D sculpting can be adapted for classic miniature manufacturers, it also shows an aesthetic change all Morat players will be happy about, I am not sure if it is needed here.
To sum it up, CB does great, secure themselves for expanding, dire foes bring more to the background and gameplay, unseen units artwork and morat resculpts in 3D (not shown)

Very excited!

i do what i can 🙂 and try to take out all the paint drying time 🙂
Yes but who defines who wants what ?
I think this video is already super niche and appeals to just a very small core audience and why go elsewhere when you can just fast forward ?
I know I’m feeding trolls, here, but…
Aren’t you happy to have learned maths and reading in school with textbooks that weren’t encyclopedias of all things maths and letters from day one ? Aren’t you happy that you can first get a book to familiarize yourself with a subject, then get deeper info later on ?

I could buy resin Infinity miniatures… But plastic ?
No, no, no.
Not until casting has made a LOT of progress.
