The Weekender: Dad’s Army, Infinity Tags, Repairs & Storage
February 15, 2014 by dignity
On this week's Weekender we have a jam packed show including the new Dad's Army minis from Warlord, a sneaky peek at some exclusive Infinity minis and we're saying good bye to an old friend for a time.
So guys what have you been up to in your gaming week?

are you sure Warren? that makes you 30 stone!! dont you mean pounds?
when we are on the topic ive been doing the fit club since just after xmas, and I havent really done much in the way of fitness, all ive done is on the way to/from work each day I get off the bus 1 stop early so I have to walk a bit more, most of my issues were food. I never ate breakfast, and to to quote Louis CK, I used to be like ‘the meal doesnt finish when I am full, it finishes when I hate myself’. so now, nearly 2 months in ive lost a stone, just by doing those 3 small things
Great look at the Dad’s Army box – zey also are goink on ze list.
Games Workshop are getting one of the finest embassadors tabletop gaming has ever had: I hope some of his glowing enthusiasm, sportsmanship and pragmatism rubs off on them and they come out of the Lenton closet and engage with the wider world again.
Best of luck, James!
No more all you can eat buffets mate 😛
Oh, and @warzan, thin gauge guitar string for aerials 😉
genius!
I’m about to restring mine so I’ll start saving old strings too!
Use the hairs from a plastic dust brush from a pound shop, nice and flexible when being transported and being moved on the table
SAWNKY new job? Spell check ffs!
Fixed
My fault, last title read like he was dead!
Welcome to Fit Club Warren! Time to kick that weight in the teeth! (Let’s hope it doesn’t have teeth, that would be scary)
I’ve got a bit of storage space, would be happy to keep hold of a few armies for you 😉
The movie reference: Spinal Tap!
Or to be precise, This Is Spinal Tap.
Lying in bed watching “The Weekender” has never made me feel so hungry !!
A “foot long” hot dog at the Sunderland match will sort that out !!
Good luck with the fit club , I’ll be starting on Monday ………….. honestly !!
As for those Dads Army mini’s , they will be taking on my WW2 German Zombies in games of “Zombies and Survivors” , and if they release a Private Cheeseman mini , I’ll Zombie him straight away !!
Hi warzan good for you on the diet man, but its more of a lifestyle change if you want to keep it off anyhow mate lay off the chocs crisps and pop beer, eat wholemeal rice/bread/pasta, eat lots of protein it fills you and you stop snacking, and buy a bike, it worked for me ten years ago, good look.
Love those Dads army mini’s.
Spot on. Diet is far more important than exercise for losing weight. You can even live a completely sedentary lifestyle and lose weight if your diet is right, whereas exercise alone is never enough.
Then this is where I have to start 🙂
I would imagine that your working life makes it hard to maintain a disciplined diet. I’ve put on a fair bit of weight since I left work for uni five years ago because I no longer have a structure to my day.
This is true. April last year I needed to loose a bit of weight before going to the MCM expo in London. I just cut down on bread and stopped eating shite.
Without even doing any exersize I lost just under 3 inches off my waist in 5 weeks. Kept it up ( Well, except for Christmas time. lol ) and i’m loosing about an inch to an inch and a half a month. ( I’m not going off weight as that would just make me obsessive. )
It’s great. I’m actually eating larger portions than I ever did before, the stuff i’m eating now has more taste, I feel tonnes better and I can still treat myself to a bit of crap every now and then.
I was big, and still am but i’m half the size I was a year ago. And it’s all down to just cutting out the crap.
I should point out too. I’m not eating anything special. I’m not on a ‘Diet’. I just changed a couple of things.
By cutting out the crap. I mean no sweets, chrisps, chocolate ( or at least not a lot ), and half the amount of sugar you put in things like tea, coffee, breakfast cerials.
Grill or griddle stuff instead of frying it. Have jacket potatoes instead of chips. And eat lots of veg. ( If you don’t like the taste then just mash them into you potatoes. 🙂
Before I started I never would have belived how easy it would be to loose weight just by changing a couple of things.
First good luck james, is this the end of Dreadball academy? I had my first game of bolt action the other day and oh my god what a game. Involved in the game at every stage no down time and great fun. Just about finished a british army and now starting a late german one.
Farewell James! We’ll always have Tapatalk!
First Dad’s Army….
Can “It Ain’t Half Hot Mum” be too far behind?
And allo allo , the fallen maddonna
indeed welcome to Fitclub Warren and yes you need to check your diet as part of your routine because as a good facebook friend of mine says “You cant out cardio calories”. I see you just about got to mention Zombies Run,5K which I have been using to improve stamina and breathing. One thing I notice about fitclub is it keeps each other encouraged to just keep doing something about getting fit. I love the focus is just to encourage each other to keep doing what we can to keep getting fit. Each of us has a different goal , muscles, stamina, weight loss or flexibility.
Anyway waffle over ..
go grab Zombies Run,5K and get walking , running , cardioing yourself a little more which will make the task of reshaping yourself a hell of a lot easier.
That’s what I like about BOW – rapid response.
Typos happen. it could have been worse…
The Weekender: James Gets A Wanky New Job!
:O
Warren, Zombies 5k is an excellent app to help get you started. It gets you running 5k in 8 weeks (but if you struggle with any runs you can repeat them), and it’s only a maximum of an hours run, 3 times a week. When you think about it, 3 hours in a week shouldn’t be that hard to fit in.
Go Warren, you can do it.
Ps, I’m so glad the weekender in back. Keep up the good work gents
Good luck to james. I hope you have the strength to remain a gaming Jedi and resist the power of the dark side. It’s like obi wan going to work in the Death Star. Can you turn the deadly laser into a beacon of hope? Da da daaaaaaaaaaa
All he needs to do is shut down the tractor beam, Me and @lloyd will do the rest – once @dignity has turned off the waste compactor!!!!!
Where could he beeee!
😉
What’s that incredible smell you’ve discovered?
I’ve got a bad feelng about this….
I think he is pinned down in the cell block also known as the editing suite 😉
Great vid guys, I love those Dad’s army minis, fantastic stuff, a bit of fun back into wargames, as it should be.
I must admit I’m a bit saddened James is moving on, from a personal perspective he’s been a very important part of my buying into mantics products, presenting the games as he did on here showed them off at their best in my opinion, and whilst I would have reservations about whether an individual, however talented, could influence GW’s tone enough to get some humour back into their games systems (the biggest thing they lack these days for me), I certainly hope he can.
Warren , the best material I have ever found for aerials is Guitar string. Get to know someone who plays, they will break strings and you will get aerials for you tanks. Their are multiple thickness strings, the remain flexible and are easy to install, even in the old mounts, just use a pin vice to drill the hole. Coat paper banners with PVA and they can slip on and off the aerials to mark units and commanders.
As for storage, go to a foam wholesale shop, it come in standard thickness’ of 25mm and 50mm, is cheap to buy in bulk, they normally have spray on glue in the same place. Use the thin 5mm piece to create the base and cut your own miniature holes. this way you can tailor the space to the miniature and fit everything in perfectly. I find the Woodland Scenics long bladed knife perfect for this ( it is about 8cm long I think). I also have access to surgical blades so I find these very useful (make friends with a nurse). I have made wooden boxes to fit the foam trays, they look like ammo crates from WW2, and stack really well. You can then paint the emblem on the outside of the box for easy recognition, are easily transported to games, make a great seat at venues and keep your mini’s safe.
As a side note, you need a copy of Airforce on the shelf behind you, it was one of the best WW2 air-combat games ever written. Find someone with a copy an play it, I think you will love the mechanics. 10 Days off the fags today……..need to quit for the Kids.
Oh gods, no. NOT THE JAMES MONTAGE! I was holding it together until the James montage! Now there’s something in my eye.
Good luck James!
Aerials: I’ve used nylon fishing line to make aerials. It works quite well. If they get bent too much you may need to repaint then as the paint can flake off but that hasn’t happened to me often.
Fit Club: 30 minutes exercise a day will start you off in the right direction. Then it’s a question of eating better, which means thinking about what you’re eating, not just grabbing what you like, when you like. For me that’s made the biggest difference. I’m still eating a lot of food but it’s fruit and veg, with some protein and a ‘much’ smaller portion of carbs. I’m only a couple of weeks in but I think this is something I can keep up long-term… except maybe the beer… that’s a real B*~#h.
Also wanted to say that I love Flames and now Bolt Action too (thanks for introducing me to that). More videos about them would be fantastic. My favourite ‘Fog of War’ game is still Epic Armageddon but BA may soon be competing with that.
That has got to be the best camera work on the minis I’ve seen. Really good quality stuff guys, nicely done.
The whole concept of Dads Army in 28mm is wonderful. I hope that there are enough gamers out there who don’t know who they are and go out and discover that series. They’re in for a nice surprise. I can’t imagine any other company doing something like this for one of their games. Obviously no one at Warlord is taking themselves too seriously and it is showing with stuff like this.
I cant wait to get some BA content started on BOW, its becoming a huge game in my life…
I have my Dads army models coming I hope they get here soon 😀
I’ll definitely pick some up at the next show. I’ve no need for Dad’s Army right now but I can’t not have them 🙂
On storage, couldn’t agree more about the problems with foam trays. They just don’t cut it when you come to a variety of mini’s/poses. What I’ve been doing is we had one of these in the house from Ikea:

Now the drawers on that are entirely metal and about 90mm deep. Good size for mini’s because they’re fairly shallow so not wasting much space vertically but deep enough they can take bigger models. What you do is superglue a magnet into the base of the mini, plonk it in and it’ll stay where it is. I’ve even tried taking the drawer out and shaking it over my head with zero casualties and the drawers could double as a tournament tray. Because you can put them in base-touching-base you can fit tons in a drawer with no worry of them tumbling about and bumping into each other and has no problems with even the weirdest of poses.
Got the idea when I saw a youtube video of someone (painting clinic I think) using a baking tray that came with a plastic lid and carry handle that way and they even screwed on a sheet of metal to the top of the plastic lid so they could make better use of the vertical space having mini’s upside down on the now metallic lid as well as held in the metal tray. Works a treat and while it can be a lot of magnets it’s a lot cheaper than foam =)
Ah – so now we know what the M stands for. James Montage Hewitt. 🙂
James getting a job at GW is brilliant news for James, but it’s also brilliant news for GW. They obviously still recognise talent when they see it.
Like Justin said I always scrape of any remaining glue when reparing minis. When I have enough surface to work with I also ‘crosshatch’ the parts to be joined. I find the roughened surface creates a better bond.
I’ve also been mad enough to glue metal minis using pins made from nails and PVA glue. It might sound insane, but it actualy works if the unsupported parts (like arms) aren’t too heavy. The PVA gets everywhere and creates a bond without air bubbles. As it dries it tends to ‘suck’ the parts together. And because it’s a bit elastic the joins tend to bend instead of break when suffering an impact.
@warzan: Hey Warren, as you did the Dreadball Academy together with James, I’d like to ask you to take a look at Slaughterball. It is just a one-man project and the creator is looking for funds right now on Kickstarter, but what he has shown so far looks amazing both in regards to the sculpts and rules-wise.
It’s almost as if James had died, as opposed to changing jobs.
But then, with GW’s internet policy, it’s probably the same thing online 😛
A beacon of light from the darkness of GW
I am insanely jealous of your collection of gaming goodness that you have on your shelves,
A real shame to see James go, I only hope he has influence at GW and Mantic don’t miss him too much. Another great weekender guys, I need to get myself a backstage pass! just as soon as I cancel my White Dwarf subscription!
On storage, I use the same type of plastic tubs. I put a magnetic sheet across the bottom of the tub. Most of my minis have metal bases. As to the metal, I prefer Wargames Accessories custom bases. You can order them in many different sizes. For round bases metal washers from any DYI store work great. This is much more flexible than foam. For transport you can put the peel and stick magnetic material in a box. This works fine for local travel via privately owned vehicles. I use this for various 15mm Armies and 25 skirmish games. I still use some foam for things like X-wing.
Good luck James.
It was awesome to see the Dad’s Army stuff on close cam; they’re great! As other’s have said, they should do an ‘Allo ‘Allo set and an It Aint Half Hot Mum set too.
Good luck to James! I wondered where he was going to go after reading he’s leaving in the Mantic newsletter. I hope he becomes someone really influential and makes more loads of great games, as I’m sure most people will think he will. Big shame you guys won’t be able to do interviews and the like with him any more. At least, not on camera, muwahahahaha! 😀
Oh yeah, I would like to visit a BoW venue, not sure I could make it to your studio there though.
shame to see him leave mantic (met him on the last open day)
can’t wait to here about events you guy thinking o running. May sergest another MERCS one to clear up the last one?
I was totally sold on Bolt Action after watching the demo video and although I was sorely tempted to put together a US Airborne army (I guess you can blame that on Band of Brothers!) I changed my mind when I stumbled across some information about the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry and their part in Operation Jupiter as part of the 43rd Wessex. Since I’ve just moved back to Cornwall it felt like the right thing to do so my Infantry box arrived this week along with my Vickers MMG and I’ll be ordering a Churchill Mk VII soon enough.
Now all I need to do is find somebody to play against 😉
Hehe, love the music at the end! Long distance bromance?
On the fit side of things, the diet is the biggest contributor. What worked for me: no fruit muesli for breakfast, hand full of almonds for brunch, no carb lunch (200g protein, 200g vegges), protein snack (especially if I was doing a bootcamp), no carb dinner (200g of protein / vegges).
The no / low carb thing works best (up to 4kgs per week for a male), but it’s hard to get into. Once you’ve done it for a few weeks it becomes easy to resist carbs.
Will be missing the fun and delightful James.
Warren, I too spend much of my day sitting. This is a sure way to gain weight if you have too many calories. The simple solution is to limit what you take in. I did this myself by only drinking water, as I had heard that we get roughly as many calories from our drink as a hard meal. I dropped 25 pounds and I walk a little more and keep up one trick, water. Energy drinks, sweetened/creamed/caramelized coffee, and many other drinks add a lot to the waistline. Good luck!
Magnets are the way to go for storage. You can get magnetic paint or thin metal sheets for the bottom of a drawer.
Yay for more bolt action.
Congrats James.
Oh Gosh, if storage already is an issue to me and I’m still looking for a game to start in the wargame hobby I think I will be damned as soon as I begin to play…
Thanks for the tips on how to fix broken miniatures, I’m very clumsy so I know I will drop them.
The models on Dad’s Army box looks amazing, I don’t know Bolt Action’s rules and so, but I want these models.
James will be missed, but I’m sure that with his carisma and sportsmanship he will make a lot of diference in GW. I Hope that he spread all his carisma and change a little bit the polices in GW. And I know that his skills will make GW games a lot better!
Oh man, that montage!
Good luck James! It would be amazing if you could convince GW to allow you to do some BoW. Failing that, maybe just convince them to put the scary evil back into 40k (poor chaos and nids).
Good luck James, I will miss you vivid examples and your excitement for the games you represent.
So glad you are doing Bolt Action. Just got into after the Demo game and love it. It is so well done , love it!
Really want to see a Weird War battle report with the vampire and werewolves etc.
Very contrasting types of miniatures but all awesome! 🙂
