The Weekender: Trekking Through Golems & Zombies!!!
September 14, 2013 by lloyd
Hi there folks and welcome to the Weekender! This time we have an interesting discussion on the Star Trek films, expand more on the Golem Arcana Kickstarter and also talk about those very nice looking Kingdom Death Plastics!
As if that wasn't enough we've also got a game of the week in Zombies!!! Also we have a serious (well, it could be serious) chat about the female form in tabletop gaming and when is it all just too much?

Game Of The Week: Zombies!!!
Happy Gaming!

Almost panicked without my weekender lol
Yeah we have had some Internet problems today.
5 hour upload type problems 🙁
Thought I was gonna have to go cold turkey. Glad you guys got everything sorted.
Don’t forgot the battle for hoth Lego star wars board game…
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005WGIQ44
Shouldn’t Warren and Lloyd be in a pub about now. Big thanks to you for working late for us. Even though this isn’t a backstager video, you guys make the paltry fee more than worthwhile.
I shall enjoy watching this in the morning but.. man.. Zombies!! That was our go-to game back in the day.
Every time you use a bullet or play a card, you take a shot. Whew, that session was brutal!
I almost gave up on getting a Weekender this week!
I would love to see 7 BOWers playing this and put on the site on Halloween. That would be a great video/stream.
Was wondering where this was.
Several people, including a friend of mine, have created 6mm Star Wars armies. They tend to use them in Epic Armageddon but I think there are seperate rules for them somewhere too.
I’m assuming it’s not official

Love Zombies. We played it with models from Hasslefree but I love the look of the ones you plan to use.
Movies for Justin… ( Not exactly what you were meaning but bloody funny anyway. )
Star Wars vs Star Trek Street Fight!.. http://youtu.be/poNEN3jJUqI
Snatch Wars. ( Warning Bad Language.)… http://youtu.be/vskHXtPuvBk
Also. Don’t forget that Zombies!!! has about a million expansions for it.
And. Zombicide is a good source of alternate survivors and zombie figures.
OK. Where did my links go?
Right then. As YouTube links doen’t seem to work.
Just do a search for…
“Snatch Wars”
( Although be warned – Bad language. )
and
“Star Wars vs Star Trek Street Fight!”
Not what you were after but bloody good all the same.
That zombies game looks pretty damn good!
To avoid the links not working entirely, you need to watch the Ryan Vs Dorkman Lightsabre fights as a fan movie for Star Wars.
Need to work out how to cross/mess Zombies and Formula D and Warren would be in Halloween heaven.
I’m not saying youse should do this every week but I like the weekender after the pub.
I’ve assembled a few of those WG survivors and while they’re characterful minis, only certain arms only fit certain bodies so they’re a bit lacking in options.
Has anyone seen this yet?
I.M.P.S The Relentless on you tube, they did a really good job on these fan films they even
recruited Peter Cullen ( the voice of Optimus Prime) as narrator.
they did do a star wars mini game, I had about 4 different box sets.

Great show guys!!!!!!!
Soooo………… speaking of eating what ever happened to Justins eating challenge?
Oh we forgot about that, need to bring that back up the agenda!
And also speaking of eating… Feast of Games. What the hell happened to that? One of the best ideas they came up with and it goes the way of the dodo after only one show.
I think I’ve commented on this before, but basically FoG takes around 40hrs to produce (and requires the direct input of 5 people), we did a test show to gauge interest, which was pretty good – so its not dead, but other stuff will take priority until we have the resources to do it on a more regular basis, (or the show changes format – which is a possibility and somthing I’m looking at, at the moment)
In saying that, we have play throughs of games (firefly most recently) coming through regularly, so minus the fish and chips (and obviously different folk) that kind of content is still being created.
BTW is it the food bit in it you like?
I liked the feast. It was a little bit different and somehow seemed a little less like blatant product placement. I understand financial realities and all that, but when everything is the coolest thing ever, it gets a bit old.
Fair enough. If it takes too long then that’s a problem and obviously you could spend that time elsewhere. But it would be really nice to have an episode every now and then.
To be honest the food and drink bit probably wouldn’t really be missed if it had to be done away with. But it did add another layer of fun to the banter.
I feel that you can only get a proper feel for a game if you see it played. Watching a group of mates having a laugh and really enjoing themselves ( or not ) goes a long way towards giving an understanding of how the game plays and wether it’s a game for you. Don’t get me wrong. I loved the Dreadball and Flames of War vids. But even those came over as a bit too clinical and forced sometimes.
I think the fact that it came over as a more interesting, more complete and not at all watered down version of Tabletop also appealed to me and it felt like it was what Tabletop should have been. I love Tabletop but as well as them only ever doing ‘casual’ games. it feels so rushed and full of false camaraderie sometimes.
Also. Sorry I forgot untill you just pointed it out. I think you did mention it in the past. you
Hi there,
if you like Zombies!!! you will probably love Last Night on Earth. LNOE is very cinematic. It’s like a (Teen) Horror Movie on a board game. It is not as easy as Zombies!!! but from my point of view, out of the box, it gives you more options and thus replayability is higher.
This is very very high on the list. Will try to get it on the show before Halloween!
LNOE is loads of fun. It’s really a “zombie movie” game as opposed to a “zombie game” which has successfully made a couple new gamers in my social circle. In no other game have I seen so much enthusiasm in announcing what card someone is playing (nor the improv dialog accompanying it).
Bin checking in yesterday about every hour. My weekend isnt complete without the weekenders friendly banter. Now on to the xlbs :). Thx for making the stuff you do.
So.. yeah. Star Wars Miniatures was a pretty big thing back in it’s day – well, relatively speaking. Like the D&D miniatures battles game, it was a competitive skirmish system not unlike Hero Clix. Wizards produced a couple of battle maps for the competitive tournaments and I guess some people still play it which is what helps keep Adventurers Atlas in business 😉
Quality wise, there’s not much to talk about and even the Starship Battles line (Which sadly never saw an expansion before WotC canned it) were not as good as the X-Wing ships from FFG. But the ~12 different sets they released gives you a very broad selection of miniatures to pick from and the huge box of stuff I have collected over the last 4-5 years has been a real boon for my tabletop Star Wars RPG campaign.
i had the same problem with zombies when i first played, it starts to become boring. the best fan film for me has to be wayside creations fallout nuka break, i could put a link on here if anyone needs it. also warren i am a massive trekkie fan to
I’ve been playing Zombies!!! for years, great game. There are loads of expansions, although these are a bit hit and miss. I’d recommend anyone to get at least 3.5, basically a new card deck for the game, really add’s to the fun.
I find the whole Star Wars universe boring and un-creative. The iconic ships and vehicles were designed in the 70s but haven’t progressed aesthetically. There are a tonne of other companies who have cooler designs. Mind you, the new Star Wars coming out in the future I’m sure will have new/cool ships, but I can’t get excited about a game like x-wing cause the models are pretty crap.
A really good fan flick is BOBA FETT:JEDI HUNTER. Its funny as hell, check it out.
..and now that I’ve actually had time to watch the whole video, I had much the same idea with regard to swapping out the Zombies!!! miniatures for ~28mm sculpts. I went for the big box of 60 plastic Z-Clips zombies.. partly because of the cost but also because of the smaller bases (although you get flat 2 pence sized bases to put them on if you like). Compared to the Vixens or even the metal minis in the Z-Clips line they are very generic which is.. actually just what you want for a Zombie hoard. Well, except for ripped shirt guy. It’s easy to fit a few of those in your hoard but when he represents 25% of your minis you need to get creative to stop him from standing out too much. Screw ripped shirt guy! I still reckon they will look pretty good mixed in with the metal Z-Clips range though.
As for the survivors.. yeah, I haven’t picked up the “Women” boxed set yet but I will because even if they customisation options are more limited than they first seem, it’s still a very cheap way to put together a large number of armed female civilians.
..but honestly, if you are only going to need one or two female survivor minis and they are going to be fighting zombies anyway (and you don’t mind the fact that they are going to be taller than the Zeds) then these two are a no-brainer.
Heh, no-brainer.

Awesome show, thanks guys.
OLD JOKE ALERT
It’s a fear of crashing you have Warren not a fear of flying 🙂
Hey guys, if you open up that battle for hoth pack there should be a fold out map/board, rule book, counters sheet and a dice. It was a board game with expansions like your hoth pack, you could endor etc too. It’s quite a good game and easily transferable to tabletop as instead of movement representing squares on the board you use them as inches. We played it out our club in Ipswich recently.
I agree about Star Wars, I’d love a full on tabletop starwars army, 15mm is good so as to get the big stuff on but 28mm I think would be best as it lets you field at-st and speeders etc while having highly detailed minis like Jedi that are crucial to the playability. To be honest the wotc rules weren’t far off of being bang on for it, it just needed the backing of a quality mini maker. As much as I hate to say it, I’d have liked Gw to have got the licence instead of lord of the rings.
KD:M will be the most impressive looking game once it gets released. Rushing removes quality and I wouldn’t be happy with that if I ran a company.
Just ordered my copy of Formula D so thanks for last weeks coverage @warzan. Thanks for also covering more board games too. 😉
Nice idea to turn this board game into a miniatures game as it would make it look more interesting with the scubs cast etc. Hehe.
Zombies! was popular for a while in our gaming group but the endgame problem that Warren described turns the game into a slow, repetitive crawl. The problem seems to be that the players move too slowly across the board and too many of the event cards are ‘penalty’ cards to hinder the other players. When the helipad appeared anyone trying to make a dash for it would get hobbled with negative cards from the others players. We very nearly abandoned the game on several occasions from boredom and haven’t gone back to it since.
For MUCH better alternatives check the ‘Last Night on Earth’ & ‘City of Horror’ games. Both of which capture the tension & spirit of zombie movies far better than Zombies!
I’m glad you showed us those zombie and apocalypse survivor minis, as I was thinking the same thing about using proper minis in Zombies!!!. I love that game; only started playing it this year and it’s been loads of fun. You can add all sorts of homebrew rules to it, such as having to roll a dice to see if you can actually pilot the helicopter and if it crashes back down again to the mercy of more zombies to kill. There’s expansions to the game too that you can get, like the shopping mall in Dawn of the Dead that I’d like to get.
I can recommend 2 fan-series in 2 very different genres. (Not sure if you were just looking for Star Wars / Star Trek stuff.)
JourneyQuest is a comical parody on role-playing.
There Will Be Brawl is a very film noir kind of gangster thriller inspired by the Smash Bros. video game.
How about this, a fan trailer for us children of the nineties. Nothing short of live action gritty Pokemon.

Thank you so much for the height jokes guys. I’ll have you know that this time I was taller when I went to China. True it might be because I was teaching 4 year olds, but for a time I felt tall.
Thank you so much guys, really looking forward to my early Christmas present!
Most of the club are now playing warmachine/hordes, so looking forward to getting this guy on the table.
Thank you very much again, love the shows, keep them coming.
Hey, wasn’t that Amiga Zombie game.. Zombi? If so, I seem to recall having a similar experience! As for fan films, I have to recommend the following even though they are based on video games:
1: Modern War Gear Solid – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hpkGShO-Ko – “Ghost, get in my box!”
2: Mario Warfare – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AHfj0uDrf0
Finally, one for Lloyd: “Also we have a serious (well, it could be serious) chat about the female form in tabletop gaming and when is it all just too much?”
Did that get cut from the video? It guess it’s a tricky topic to approach but I’d actually like to hear your individual opinions on the matter 🙂
Cheers guys. Have often seen the Zombies game in Waterstones but always resisted it as an impulse purchase and dismissed it (probably irrationally just because it was surrounded by crappy games and therefore tainted by association). Now that stores like Waterstones are carrying games like this and X-wing/Descent etc however perhaps I should take the plunge and encourage them to stock more games. Hmmm, that’s enough of a justification even without Halloween surely?!

We play Zombies quite a bit. It is a great game and I love Warren’s tip of adding different Zombies to the mix. Great ideas!
dropzone is awesome , would love to see a star wars type
