I am going into it and I totally enjoyed KoW week
I want the skull….;) and thanks for the KoW week
Sorry Guys, this did go out at 7am, but was dated for the 1st not the 10th duh!!!
Gonna watch tjis. Am exited pledged vow wwx and AvP
The skull looks nice. KoW week was cool. Glad I started following you guys more and got to see it. I agree with Warren. Undead and Ogres would be great to play. I also have a bunch of clan war minis that I can finally use. Saw Thor 2 last night. It’s ok. Liked the first one better.
Happy Sunday!
Just checked out the Wild West website……sweet baby jesus and the orphans, there are some sweet looking minis there. My interest has been well and truly piqued.
Heroquest set me off in the gaming hobby as well- there are a few Kickstarters I’m interested in out there at the moment (such as Total Extinction), but I’m gritting my teeth and saving my cash for this one- really hope it goes ahead with no big legal spanners chucked in the works- I’m a sucker for a good dungeon crawl and for me, Heroquest is the Big Daddy (see, even managed to get in a wrestling reference there n’all)!
How about a Dungeon Crawl Console guys? The sounds of doors being kicked in, treasure chests creaking open, dart traps being set off etc… 🙂
Heroquest is coming back!? so much joy
Just seeing that jetbike instantly reminded me of brave star 🙂
Skull me
That wild west exodus stuff looked great, especially that big resin tank,
Be interesting to see what they come up with next.
At first I thought Warren and Lloyd went wresslin’ themselves… They’d make a super tagteam.
Btw: where are all the wrestling miniature games? We’re up to our necks in Roman gladiators, how about some modern ones for a change?
There was Da Clash Indiegogo not so long back. It succeeded but I don’t know if it’s ready yet:
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/da-clash
And back in the day I had a housemate who did a wrestling RPG. It sounded fairly true to American wrestling where you good guys, bad guys, special moves and you’d roleplay the press conferences. Probably long out of print but worth Googling.
waaa!! Justin’s goblin voice sounds like an evil Leprechaun!! Love those resin Exodus models. It’s impossible trying to stick to a single genre when such awesome fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk, horror, wild west models come out. And now that resin skull… I want one for Christmas 🙂 Thanks for a great weekender guys.
WWX. Wow. That looks fantastic!
I didn’t get in on the Kickstarter because westerns don’t really do it for me. Now I’m thinking Future Blazing Saddles!
@broadside are there rules for punching a horse? 🙂
Just seeing those sketches and the model you guys showed there, got me instantly thinking Bravestarr? oh the trip down memory lane….
….Then one day, a lawman appeared
With powers of hawk, wolf, puma and bear
Protector of peace, mystic man from afar
Champion of justice, Marshall Bravestarr!….ahhh…my misspent youth 🙂
That skull would make a fantastic codpiece!
Ex Illis too highbrow? Interesting.
Funny enough, my main beef with Kings of War may well be that their background seems just that tiny bit too lazy and too “lowbrow” (like calling the whole thing “Mantica”, or Orc Axewarriors simply “Axes” ) to truly scratch that “escapism” itch of diving into a “fantastic, strange, alien world” (Black Library style?).
Hard to hit the right balance between both extremes I suppose.
While I love reading the Black Library stuff (or the better writers at least), I also love the feeling of freedom to do whatever you want in Mantica. Admittedly I’ve only planned a KoW army so far but it just feels a bit more … creative.
No having to think about some fluff lawyer remarking on, say, your steam tank in Stirland colours or a Nurgle general/Tzeentch BSB (actually I’d get a bit lawyery on the last one :)).
As you say, it’s finding a balance between both extremes.
To be fair, I am not up to speed with Warhammer Fantasy that much.
Warhammer 40K, however, certainly has all those little niches “for the players” build into it. The Codex Astartes, at the end of the day, is a background-device that allows players to both “make their own” and still be “in the universe” in ways that a … dunno … Khador-but-not-Khador faction in Warmachine never could.
Even the lost Legions II and XI were originally designed to have that space for “do-something-yourself” (e.g. see the BoW project doing just that), though it sometimes feels like the 40K-community itself looks “down” on people doing “their own II Legion” or their own “Space Wolves successors, except with big cats, not wolves”, etc..,
The fluff-lawyers too often are your fellow gamers, not anybody from GW itself.
Homebrew chapters (which I had in the old days, with Epic and the old Mk6 box sets) are a good example, I reckon. It’s possibly even more a big deal in 40k as the “canon” chapters now all have their own special rules, which DIYers are free to mix and match (as far as I can tell, I don’t collect 40k other than a handful of IG to tit about with on the painting table).
Yeah, I wouldn’t say Mantic have nailed it with their ‘fluff’ and have managed to place jarring elements into it that do break the illusion for me.
Ex Illis was delving into some pretty deep historical aspects of medieval Europe, that I don’t think appealed to your average British or American player.
As with all things it’s horses for courses though!
Well, neither would be (or is) a “deal-breaker” for me at the end of the day if the game/miniatures are good.
I guess the undisputed King on getting “it right” is still Tolkien, who had both the obsession to create things like a fully functional fictional Elvish language and a fully functional cosmology to make “The Lord of the Rings” work on a deeper level, and at the same time was relaxed enough about it to fill it with plenty of self-deprecating Hobbit-Humor, talking Wargs complaining about their stupid Orc-masters, and other “fun stuff”.
I also really was a fan of what Jackson and Livingstone did with the fighting fantasy background.
As a kid I found it really approachable and loved the rune languages etc.
Its a difficult one, but I think with a bit of time (and that’s the real helper in all of these things 40K has had 25 years or so to mature) Mantics and others backgrounds will provide some fantastic and well rounded experiences.
True. Time is important. And I do like my 40K (and other things) with a healthy dose of silliness too. I think 40K is at its weakest when it tries a bit too hard to be more serious than its roots truly are (e.g. Forgeworld, Death Korps of Krieg, etc..). I am not saying there isn’t such a thing as “too high brow”.
But at the end of the day, it’s an escapist hobby, and (IMO) it needs to have that minimum of “internal-straight-faced-seriousness” that allows your mind to “escape” to that fantasy-realm in the first place. If that isn’t there, the tongue-in-cheeks jokes you later make about it in the pub have nothing to “bite into” either.
Personally, I am missing that with Mantic a bit. Their settings too often feel (to me) like an assembly of concepts and tropes, and not (yet) enough like immersive worlds that “live and breathe”. That said, I am also from the continent originally 😉
Well, like a well matured bottle of wine, its about time they pulled the cork and progressed forwards with the 40k storyline.
It’s Twix not KitKat that have the two factories side by side!
That Wild west stuff does look really good. Looking forward to the unboxings and maybe a couple of demos. 😉
What a nice idea, sitting with you guys in a living room having a cup of tea or two and talking about our beloved hobby stuff. Even if you get your studio, I highly recommend you use this set more often 😉
HAPPY SUNDAY.
Regarding Alien vs Predator.
I went from excited to “get lost” the moment I saw the prices.
Also this didnt need Kickstarter to be funded, it just feels like a company taking advantage of the system to me.
I hope it turns out okay.
Personalli I still feel the game to watch it Journey: Wrath of Demons (the monkey magic one)
XLBS cured my hangover, thanks guys!
On the other hand, if I hadn’t stayed up until 03:30 watching the Weekender and drinking ale I would have been perfectly fine this morning…
Once again, thanks for two great shows guys!!
Looking forward to the Wild West Exodus coverage, and my box of goodies from the kickstarter arriving too, between that and Deadzone going to have a busy old Christmas break.
Personally I’m looking forward to AvP, especially if they bring out the marines APC and dropship for the wargame side 🙂 The resin tiles look amazing if you want to go for the full 3D setup…… hoping my wallet will allow that one day
As for Heroquest, am sure GW will (unfortunately) stick their oar in somehow
Me too on the Dropship and APC’s etc!!!
me three! 😀
i’ll b honest, most of my miniature hobbys lifetime ive always themed my items around the “Aliens” franchise, so im Uber Excited about this kickstarter an have high hopes. 🙂
I really would love to see this come out well. Looking forward to seeing the result.
some of those wild west minis look fantastic. I imagine there will be some fantastic gaming boards made up to suit it really well.
Hey Justin, what a bummer that you couldn’t go to the wrestling eh? If it’s left you with a hole to fill then I’m sure you’ll want to get behind this cheeky board game:
http://www.toynews-online.biz/news/read/are-you-ready-for-bum-versus-face/032360
It’s good craic.
he he, I think Justin’s Christmas present is now sorted!
That should fill his stocking to the rim, hehehe.
Alright I’ll stop now.
…sphincter says what? ¬_¬
If the new Hero Quest comes out, buy quick as GW WILL sue and it will then become rare. I stupidly, back in 2005 roughly gave my Hero Quest and Space Crusade board games away to a charity shop!
And only a short time later I picked Space Crusade up in a charity shop, and beasts of war was born just weeks later lol
Perhaps it’s you I have to thank for that 😉
Oh my word. Heroquest and Space Crusade. I wish I still had my copies. My son is 5 now and I am sure he would love them.
AVP is one of the most interesting under-represented stories around in terms of fiction, gaming etc.
I would love for HeroQuest 25 to really come to fruition. Back in the day, I bought the game and several expansions for my boyfriend (now husband) for our first Christmas together. We played it a LOT in those early years. However, after our first daughter was born, sadly I sold all of it on eBay. That was about 15 years ago. To this day we joke with her that we sacrificed great games and autographed Doctor Who books so that she could eat!
Thanks for another great Weekender XLBS!
She is a lucky Girl!
I would be checking to see how much first born daughters get on ebay 😉
Heroquest & Space Crusade are to blame for my current addiction to plastic, resin & metal, and I’ve never looked back 🙂 I agree though, Heroquest as it was would be a tough sell today, but you’ve only got to look at the likes of Mercs and Incursion to see that people want to try and reinvigorate that style of game for a modern audience. I suspect though that the modern marketplace would really need a tie-in licence of some sort to generate the sort of impact ‘Quest & Crusade had. Hate to say it but GW could do worse than to work up a Hobbit or LOTR-based boardgame using coloured plastic versions of their more recent starter set minis….
And chaps, if you wanted to dip your toes back into the world of pro-wrestling, you could do worse than check out http://www.cagesideseats.com/ The guys here do a bang up job of rounding up the weeks events, discussing storylines, rumours, and showcasing classic (or not-so) moments with their “On This Date In Pro Wrestling History” segment
As for the whole Prodos/ CMON situation, I’m in on three of their Kickstarters, of which I’ve received two (Zombiecide S2 wve 1 & Sedition Wars: BFA is complete) and am waiting on the first wave of another (Relic Knights). The issue backers have had is that their communication post Kickstarter has been atrocious, only seeming to improve when they have another project in the works and they want some good PR. It’s not been helped by the issues with the Sedition Wars ruleset, massive scale issues in the second wave of BFA minis, and the horrendous shipping issues around ZS2 wave one and SW:BFA wave two.
Most of us appreciate that where Kickstarters snowball and unlock more content this can lead to delays, as can shipping to thousands of customers. Equally though, when a project attracts millions of dollars in support it is not altogether unreasonable to expect that the company in question would arrange for additional customer support staff and/ or extra hands to assist in the order despatch process. Not to get an nearly update two months after we were told that shipping had started that they were now hiring additional packing staff.
it all makes one wary of backing any other projects in which they are involved (not to mention I’m still waiting on stuff I pledged for from Prodos’ Warzone Resurrection Kickstarter…)
Sorry, rant over 🙂
Thanks for this insight!
The resin mini’s for wild west exodus look beautiful
AVP all the way baby.
I’m curious what they’ll do on heroquest. I’ve played the game quite recently and it’s not really aimed at mature tactical gamers. We call it swatquest, as a methodical approach really kill any tension and there isn’t really any other way to play it for us.
If they upgrade the rules I might be interested. If not, maybe a few fimirs and mummies if possible.
Yup seems like I’m another – HeroQuest, Space Hulk then 40k, fantasy before ending up where I am today with my current obsession with historics. Be nice to see it dusted off, vamped up and revealed to the next generation. May just be the nostalgia speaking but stuff like HeroQuest was just massive when I was a sprog haha
Plastikkrak sounds intriguing, any chance of a few pics of there inheritance stuff? Sadly the site is a bit lacking in that regard… The resin terrain boards sound like a good idea too…
Wait, Justin said he damn near went blind, and Warren didn’t make a crude joke? Dissapointed @warzan
Heroquest is still my favorite dungeon delver board game, It has a simplicity that was lost with warhammer quest that to me just makes it a better pick and play boardgame.
I’ll certainly buy it if it comes out again, it seems you would have to pay £60 or more to buy a second hand original on ebay these days anyway, so its costly whatever happens.
PS the guy with the sock is Santino Morella, my son loves the wrestling.
someone just mentioned this int he other weekender bid and i thought id repeat it here… i really enjoyed this weeks weekender videos, u guys sitting round a coffee table just seems to feel far more relaxed, chilled out and personal. maybe something to take into consideration for future vids? keep up the good work!
Kings of War week has been my 2nd favorite this year, only behind Flames of War week. Great models, quick easy rules, and love the ally rules.
Happy Sunday! Can’t wait for my wild west to turn up! Looms fantastic.
Looks like WWX is going to be a bit of a feature. I love the themed weeks we have had some really memorable ones this year. When you don’t think you can jump on board with a new game straight away or you just havn’t played it in ages it’s good to know the resource is still on here. I’m planning on revisiting Carnevale myself.
There are so many kickstarters it’s hard to keep up. Sometimes I wish you guys could go more into games that are already out there. But I guess the Weekender and XLBS are the best place to discuss new shiny stuff.
Loved the Wild West exodus that is very slick looking a definite wallet slimmer
Sweet pad man! Love the fireplace and the built in shelves. Cheers! AKA Crazie German
Really can’t wait to get my hands on Wild West Exodus too.
Currently reading Honor among Outlaws (https://www.wingedhussarpublishing.com/store/featured-products/the-jessie-james-archives-honor-among-thieves-paperback/ ) to get me into the mood for painting the delivery asap 🙂
Skull with servos indeed.
Anyone else having playback issue at about 15mins in?
http://www.hasbro.com/common/instruct/HeroQuest.PDF
I’m not much a fan of fantasy in general so i will leave heroquest and Ex Illis alone, i already have my KoW undead army to paint so that enough for me.
AvsP looks awesome but just the models, i’m still waiting to see more of the gameplay and find some guys here interested in buying it ( sadly the ones that are fans of AvsP are not very interested in (board/war)games, but this might be the entry game for them 😛 ).
WWE looks amazing too and since i love that aesthitic because it looks very similar to the looks of Fields of the Nephilim ( that band is a beast, specially if you love Lovecraft! ), but Mantic , Kingdom Death and a few more have stole my money and time. I’ll wait for second edition.
I could use a skull for the office. Finally I there would be someone to have a descent conversation with.
I agree that Heroquest would need some new rules to make it “grown up”, but it after Fighting Fantasy books, this was what got me into gaming in the first place. My friends and I have recently dug up Advanced Heroquest. You can find out about our experiences here:
http://www.thepodcasthost.com/dicingwithdesign/episode-4-advanced-heroquest-advanced/
another good episode guys 🙂
Happy sunday!!!
Happy Sunday!! The Wild Wes tExodus stuff looked amazing!
Love the sitting round the coffee table setting. Guessing it’s your house Warren, very brave inviting us all in hehe.
You guys talking of WWE (WWF back then) took me back to my early teens. I used to love The Bushwackers and Jake The Snake, but my all time favourite was Hacksaw Jim Duggan…that dude wasn’t all there.
Heroquest was my introduction to the hobby. I remember painting the minis in old Humbrol aircraft paints, undercoated with DIY undercoat then frantically brushing it off when i realised it was waaay too thick. The Fimir was my favourite mini.
WWX mini’s look awesome in every sense of the word, I really fancy the Warrior Nation. I have a passion for the Native American culture. I looked at their website however, and was horrified at the prices.
Is it me or are they expensive? Am I missing something?
Heroquest was my lead into D&D. I love the look of the Wild west minis I definitely think they could pull double duty for Deadlands.
really like the buildings for wwx
I have a spot for that skull…..
Have to change my pants now, and buy a new keyboard, drooling over the WWX mini’s. I have bought almost all of the range through the KS, and Its only a week or two from my door.
And yes, MB is owned by Hasbro.
Ignore the WWE, watch the Torymon/Open the Dragon Gate. Back in the day I very briefly was on the playtest team for the WWE rpg, Know Your Role. It was terrible and they paid no attention to us pointing out its many flaws. Hence very briefly.
*Toryumon
HeroQuest actually got me into playing RPGs first. The German RPG ‘Das Schwarze Auge’ (The Dark Eye), which back then was sold in boxes by Schmidt Spiele(at that time stil a big board game company). When a friend and I brought it home and opened it we were thouroughly disappointet: we had expected a game with miniatures and a board just like HeroQuest, but all we got was two books and a 20 sided die. After reading the rules and clumsily playing thrugh our first session, we were hooked though. Miniature wargaming happened a lot later for me.
The HeroQuest trademark by the way seems to have been with MB and not GW. After MB left it dormant for a certain amount of time it became available at which point Greg Stafford’s Issaries Inc. grabbed it for their Glorantha RPG: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeroQuest_(role-playing_game).
I am not sure if this also extends to the game components or just the name though.
Anyways – I’m really looking forward to that Kickstarter.
Great show!
seeing the WWX stuff, has got me frothing for my own bits to arrive, the models look fantastic!
Will be interested to see the take on the Heroquest project – still got my copy sitting in the cupboard (minus a few very badly painted minis).
I agree with a previous poster on the negative feedback that has grown around CMoN having a lot to do with their poor communication post-KS. I’ve backed three of their projects and all three have experienced long delays.
Compare this to Mantic who have pretty much been spot on for most of their stuff and very good at keeping the updates coming, and the guys at MERCS who have done a brilliant job keeping the excitement up for their MYTH game post-KS.
IMHO, the CMoN seems to over-promise and under-deliver when it comes to delivery times, when there would be little downside to doing the reverse (which I have a feeling Mantic has done recently and hence allowed themselves a bit more flexibility than they had on early projects).
A big part of KS is the sense of both entertainment and connection with the project creators. Good communication goes a long way to ensuring everyone have a great experience 🙂
Glad to see you back! keep up the good work guys!
I love heroquest and gamezone make gorgeous minis. Complete bastard to put together but excellent once made.
I still have my copy of Heroquest with expansions from when I was a kid, and I would probably shell out for a “revised” copy!
