Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday.
I really enjoyed this new improvised format.
Happy Sunday
Happy Sunday, no hot drink as it is way too late for that
Happy Sunday.
That dust Helicopter could totally fly @dignity , there was a contra rotation coaxial rotor aircraft made and flown in France in the late 1930s, development stopped due to ww2, and then the prototype was destroyed in an air raid. That said, I do agree with you on the cartoon look of the dust stuff, yeah okay K47 has Mechs, but their proportions make then look possible, the dust Helo looks too tall and slightly swollen to me.
Happy Sunday, it’s still the weekend!?!
If you had yesterday’s show in the can will people be talking in 20 years about the lost BoW episode and whether it still exists on a hard-drive somewhere? …. Probably not 😉
Front-arc bases: with my Infinity models I’m using an air-brush and masking tape to create a shading effect that shows the arc – of course those with 360 don’t need it.
I’m also toying with the idea of using UV ink to mark up some characteristics on the edge. A UV light (like one of the ArmyPainter laser pointers) reveals reminders quickly.
As for the stale egg dilemma – you can always rely on the old egg in water trick – as demonstrated here by Delia… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2OWXN80NZQ
In one hundred years time the drones will be a lot smaller – how about nano-technology?
Infest an area defined by an electronic signal (within which the drones can operate) – watch tanks/fliers/tech generally grind to a halt…
I think some have just been activated in my home heating controller system… need to finish watching this and go fix it.
Quite enjoyed the informal layout to the show this week for a change. That’s not to say I think you should do this every week, but it would be nice from time to time.
P.S. get a Mac, updates take about 15 minutes every months 😉
From October, Windows ones probably will as well – MS are packaging the monthly updates into one single patch
I preferred this format to – as actually felt like a backstage event…. Backstage doesnt have too be polished am happy for impovised if it gives you guys more time to do other stuff.
A very enjoyable, informal, ‘off the cuff’! production, guys. @warzan ‘Egg on yer face, egg on yer face’
@warzan mentioned a weekend ago or so about the next scatter terrain challenge, water themed. I think its a great idea and already have many ideas. Hope you dont let the idea drift away
Happy Sunday!
Great show, the improvisation made it really come to life, I almost prefer it to the usual style.
On Kings of War and multibasing: I am still not fully sold on it. I totally agree, that the diorama bases can look really good, and yours is actually quite exceptionally nice and fits the theme of the army perfectly. However, on the other hand I find the lower model count on the base somewhat detrimental, as regiments look understaffed and less impressive. My personal sweet spot is going no less than 25% under the official model count and usually i try to match it exactly. Its a big debate within the KoW community too I think. In the end it is clearly the creators liberty to go about it however he/she wants.
Loving the new striped back show
I think I prefer this basic format. Gritty and underground… first rule of backstage club is, tell everyone about backstage!
@warzan reference arc markings on bases – Mierce Miniatures already does this for their Darklands range – all their models come with a plastic round-lipped base of the appropriate size with the markings already molded for the front arcs. just a case of making sure you have the model faced correctly….
Loved the low-tech episode. After all our hobby is a low-tech one.
Hate to tell you guys but the planes that Warlord Games have for Bolt Action / K47 are 1/72 scale, not 1/48.
Happy Sunday! Really liked the format to be honest, felt exactly as I’d describe Backstage – a group of friends shooting the shit about gaming whilst hobbying.
Completely agree with @warzan on the basing discussion. I hate playing Infinity and seeing half painted bases through the terrain. Just takes away from the paint job on the model, there has to be a more elegant solution.
There is. I use Antenocities’ Compass Bars. Only work bases what’s edges are 100% straight though but they look really nice. http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/compass-bars-for-25mm-aw-bases.html
On the issue of tanks, ground troops will always be required. You can’t control a population or an area with drones. It will still need human interaction. Likewise a ground war requires the victor to have air superiority, the Gulf war is a prime example of this. Yet this only works in a conventional war, as Afganistan has shown us if the enemy conducts a guerilla style war it tends to go out of the window slightly. In a situation such as that ground troops are required not only to control the area but win the hearts and minds of the civilian population. you can’t win a war with just air based forces, you need to win and control ground as well. Otherwise the airspace becomes vulnerable from ground attack.
Ground troops will need armoured vehicles to carry out any form of ground war, so tanks will be around in some form for awhile yet.
@lloyd You mentioned basing for your upcoming Romans. I did basing on a Kings of War army that had both super thin bases on individual models and magnetized movement trays. If you are interested I posted a thread on the Mantic forums a ways back that showed both the process and some of the misteps along the way. Here is a link:
http://vb.manticforum.com/forum/kings-of-war/kingdoms-of-man/6876-napoleonic-steampunk-army
@koraski Cool, I checked it out but couldn’t see the pics when I clicked them. Do you need an account?
@lloyd I updated a thread here in BoW and added info on how I made the troop trays.
http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/painting/forum/topic/my-custom-bases/
So what if quantum processors that exist in an alternative reality are already using our computers for processing. Would this explain why the windows update takes so long?
I really liked that informal version of the XLBS. You really could do this more often with all 4 of you sitting there and just talking, it was fun to watch and was an amazing start into my sunday.
Well i also love to see you talk about the community picks, so at least a little bit of technology would be needed, for Ben to appear too … but i would love something like today more often.
@warzan enjoy reading that WD, really great that someone got it for you. And @dignity … we want to see that Slaughter Priest painted up!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamov_Ka-25
Justin, this one flies.
One of the best XLBS ever! You could do these “unplugges” ones more often and not only when technology fails. I really enjoyed it =)
I agree with @panzerkanzler . There should be more Weekenders like this, as well as XLBS, it was brilliant.
I think the answer for the future of tanks is ‘Who knows’. If you look at the tanks used at Fleurs none if those tankers could probably have imagined what tanks would look like in 20 years let alone 100. Same goes for planes from 1914-1939 the progress is phenomenal. It is all going to probably depend on technological breakthroughs we haven’t even thought if yet
@warzan How do you store the eggs when they arrive? My hiusemate owns chickens and he says that eggs fresh from the chickens bum last for 6 months so log as you do not wash them and do not store them in the fridge. When you do that you kill the friendly bacteria on them and they start to go off. Its reflex to wash the poo off the eggs when you get them, but you shouldn’t do this until you are about to use them. Perhaps this is why you are getting rotten eggs?
Also, you should always crack eggs in to a whiskey glass. You can see if they have gone off, and you can recover rogue bits of eggshell easier.
@lloyd
Great to hear there are some Romans coming your way!
What did you go for in the end, Imperial or Caesarean?
Let me know when you have them, I’ve got plenty of both at home, maybe we should do a plog together..Tale of Two Gamers Joining the Legions or something?
Not sure if I want to predict the future of the tank as weapon system in a hundred years..technology as well as the nature of warfare has developed so dramatically over the past twenty years that in a hundred humankind could easily become extinct or will have reached a level of sophistication making conflicts of any kind obsolete..
@dignity
As employer it’s so great to see employees spending their well deserved time off at work..because they love it!
Looking at the pile of boxes on th desk I can’t help to think ‘Victorian Workhouse Conditions’ tho.. 😉
oh why dont you use Linux? and LLoyd you went on holiday not vacation!!!
Yeah, I noticed the regular use of the term ‘vacation’ among the BoW team as well..is that an Irish thing caused by the proximity to our colonial cousins?
It’s a sad sign of the times
We still have Christmas though
What’s wrong with the word vacation? Holiday is a special day reserved for celebrating i.e. Christmas.
Okay..relative proximity. I’ve checked on the map..!
On the old chestnut of arc markings in WM/H, I have two thin stripes in bronze paint to mark them. They’re subtle enough to not “ruin” my mediocre paintjob but visible enough to tell which way my model is facing.
I don’t play competitively, BTW. It’s just that base arcs make the game quicker and less argumentative.
In practice this means I can quickly concede I’ve clumsily shown my arse to that charging warjack and of course it may now belt the snot out of it.
Happy Sunday 😉
Now that was a blast 🙂 I really did like the not in the studio atmosphere with Justin building something in the background 😉 This is cool just as the episode in the tank was. You guys should do these things from time to time. BoW T-Shirts is what I am waiting for.
Agree with others that the Gonzo XLBS worked fine. Maybe you could push the format and do an episode whilst skydiving or summin’ lol.
Merchandising seems such an obvious potential revenue stream that even without Re-Roll, you probably should be doing it.
@redben – what a great idea! Being a paratrooper I could arrange the whole thing with the Paras! We would have to give @warzan the Mr. T treatment -industrial strength tranquilizers! We could all jump into a DZ and shoot the show there, can you imagine the look on Warren’s face when he woke up in mid-air?
An online shop would be a great idea I think, T-shirts, mugs, dice and other gaming utensils would certainly sell very well and it won’t cost much to have your logo put on. Think about it!
Enjoyed the XLBS, I like the idea of content for purchase, (particularly the older stuff) Maybe you could do “themed packs of content” like for example Bolt Action, K47, Kings of War or the like and so you can down load and take away for use somewhere else. Hell, if you could do, Warhammer 40K Charted as a podcast (audio only) i’d buy it just to listen to while I drive (I have frequent (2 hour pus journeys). Warren please note, my desire for 40K to be audio only has nothing to do with your or AJ’s appearance, you are both fine looking men, it is more to do with the low visual content of that segment 9and my desire for audio only…………….. honest, I am being sincere here….. (everyone always thinks the worst of me …..sigh)
Really did enjoy today’s editon but missed the “Bennyness” that Ben brings .
Happy sunday folks
As everyone has already said, love the back-to-basics format guys 🙂
I would like to take this time to welcome our new D Wave overlords….
Great weekender.
In spite of the tech issues, you still managed to entertain us for over an hour.
I have a feeling that there will still be tanks in another 100 years.
Not only will the morality and safety of civilian issue hamper AI development / deployment, but convention and the stubbornness of the military elite will keep tanks at the forefront for at least the next 50 years.
Look at cavalry. Even though the use of cavalry was drastically limited in it’s effectiveness in many theatres of war at the turn of the 20th century, there were still military leaders that swore that the only way to completely route the enemy was with a cavalry charge as late as the 1940’s.
Technology advanced rapidly during the First Word War at an alarming rate. Tanks were invented, rate of fire increased across most types of weapons, aircraft went from recon use to an effective military offensive weapon. etc. Yet military doctrine was far behind this change.
I think we will continue to find better ways to kill each other. I think that the tank will be less of an asset in 100 years time, but I think you will always need actual human infantry to claim and defend a front line. If this remains the case infantry will always need some type of heavy support like a tank that will not be destroyed easily by small arms fire. Attack helicopters do fill this support role quite well, but weather will always be an element that is almost impossible to control and aircraft / drones are completely useless given certain weather conditions, where as a Tank would continue to operate effectively in the same conditions.
My son and I have visited Bovington Tank Museum 4 or 5 times in the last few years and I know that he would be disappointed if the tank faded away, as would I.
Happy 100th birthday Tank and may your crews have many happy returns.
Really enjoyed this week, not saying that I don’t enjoy the show normally however
Great show! Screw computers, that ‘informal’ version worked brilliantly and was really entertaining. Cheers lads 🙂
On mixing scales, I can see both sides of the argument. I can see what @warzan is getting at with the forced perspective (although if you stop and think about it, whenever you get down for a model’s eye view of things you should switch it out for a 15mm or 10mm scale mini to represent the same thing 😉 ) and in theory it sounds like a nice idea. On the flip side, I agree with @dignity, seeing them side by side they don’t really work that well for me. I don’t know if it’s down to a difference in sculpts, or paint jobs or just an effect of the camera, but when placed side by side @lloyd‘s helicopter looked like a toy helicopter compared to Justin’s mechs. On its own it was a good enough paintjob, and I’m sure it’d look excellent on a table with other stuff from the same range, it’s just that next to the K47 stuff, the Dust stuff looked bland.
On the future of warfare: I think Lloyd is over estimating the power of drones. The problems with his drone fleet idea are, among other things, you still need boots on the ground to retrieve damaged ones and repair them, unless they have lasers or some other sort of ‘energy weapon’ you need either boots on the ground or an automated production line to restock ammo (as it’s probably not going to be efficient for them to fly all the way back to base for resupply if operating over a large enough distance), if they’re remote controlled then the enemy could jam the control signal (or even hijack it) rendering them useless or if they’re AI controlled, then you need an AI as sofisticated as a human to be able to analyse situations and adapt to changing circumstances because if it’s not sofisticated enough, then boots on the ground will be able to outmanoeuvre them or it’ll lack a human’s ability to intuitively know something’s wrong (one example being recognising enemy combatants – if it’s based on uniform, then all the enemy has to do is disguise themselves and the drone wouldn’t realise they’re enemies or they might fire on an undercover riendly unit which might not be able to signal that they’re friendlies), it’s harder for a drone to interrogate POWs or liaise with locals, etc. So really, boots on the ground will still be needed even if it’s mostly as a support to the drones and the only place they’d operate without human support would be places that humans can’t go (eg radiation hotspots). There’s also a cost factor and a weight factor; the more gizmos you pack into a drone, the more it’ll cost and the heavier it’ll be (which means you either have to make it bigger to accommodate more powerful flight systems, or sacrifice armour or weapons to make it lighter, or both) meaning that in some circumstances humans would have an edge (eg in an urban area, a human would be able to smell a gas leak which a drone couldn’t unless it had something to analyse air composition and devoted part of its processing power to it, so a human would know it wasn’t safe to use weapons in that area whereas a drone lacking aforementioned tech wouldn’t, meaning that it might end up blowing itself up; and if the drones are remote controlled it’s either an extra thing the operator has to read from the monitor(s), or a second operator would need to be employed to keep an eye on all the additional read outs).
So short and the long of it, drones are probably either going to act as a support element for boots on the ground or be supported by them. Either way the boots on the ground are going to require armoured transport in one form or another.
On quantum chips: does the reverse also apply re stealing processing power from parallel worlds? So when my computer/internet runs slow/starts playing up its really because a chip in a parallel universe is nicking my processing power? ;p
@dignity: don’t worry, I got what you meant by throwing rocks 😉

Happy Sunday!
Damn you Microsoft *shakes fist at the heavens*, right, that’s that out of the way.
The improvised format was actually rather fun.
DUST aircraft in Konflict47, Nope, DUST aircraft look too smooth and clean, the products of a mature technological base. Whereas the Aesthetic of K47 is more “build it and get it on the frontlines as quick as posibel” and/or “take fancy new weapon system and attach to preexisting vehicle”, on an interesting aside, the Germans did develop and produce a functional helicopter the Flettner Fl 282 ,perhaps we will see something akin to that on/above the K47 battlefields in the future?
I will shamelessly admit that I am going to subscribe to the 40K Legends books.
An aside on the possibility of AIs in the most basic (albeit worst case scenario) terms, AI + Quantum Computer = Cthulhu, a mind so vast and incomprehensible that our tiny, tiny human minds could not even imagine it.
Great show guys 🙂
Happy Sunday! Loving the new “fly on the wall” style show 🙂
Brain wave for items to sell in your store, sew in patches for army bags and gaming shirts like these:

Happy Weekend all,
Watching Lloyd talk about the differences in the shading on his helicopter is like watching most haunted. No matter how much he points at it and says “look a ghost!” we just can’t see the it!
I blame the camera =P I’m sure there is alot of subtle colour changes going on there!
Also, surely this super computer just creates millions of variable based on different outcomes as opposed to “stealing parallel universe computing power” because…. well… that’s just silly. Parallel universes are just a way of saying that nothing is defined and infinite possibilities exist outside of the way things actually end up. As far as I am aware, we have no way to detect or prove that every single outcome of every single thing exists in another plain. Saying that though, we can’t comprehend that stuff anyway, like we only see things a certain way because we only have a certain amount of cones in our eyes (of which women have one extra. Which isn’t fair!) So nothing looks like what we think it does! and how the bloody hell do we know if there aren’t things going around doing all sorta mischief but they are just beyond our comprehension! Goddammit! It’s sunday for crying out loud! I’m gonna go chill.
@warzan. How can a story about frying eggs be more interesting than my comment from last week.
Mate I am very sorry lol
Distracted just at the last second!!!!
Crap this episode is bloody fun…This ‘unplugged’ format is great… Just miss Ben’s input…. Otherwise… You may want to do this occasionally 😀
Nice Egyptian diorama…though I agree with Loyyd re:not gluing the figs on bases.
Just on Ben’s input to The Weekender. Would it be possible to have him as a giant, floating, be-monocled head, hovering above the table à la Patrick Moore on Games Master?
I stopped at 2:15 to just say once again I luv this back to basics off the cuff format. I absolutely appreciate the professional production you regularly produce, but this just ‘feels’ backstag-ey!~! (TM). 😀 Thanks boys.
I love this format. May I humbly request that you guys do one of these every couple of months. Just a freeform discussion about whatever and how it relates to our hobby.
I am right there with you @masmalcor. I loved this XLBS I would love to see a random topic discussion show about whatever is floating through Warren’s head at the time. A lot of laughter and fun today! Thank you 🙂
This was one of the best hobby time sections in awhile, a good point of everything breaking was that there was less to rush on for. I have been finding weekenders to be sticking to a fairly rigid format recently, such as the obligatory kickstarter coverage at the end. This episode was actually a nice change of pace.
“do not be to proud of this technological terror you’ve constructed,
the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force”
all the really cool stuff is a bit further off than a hundred years I think.
if we start talking about AI we should get a publisher, its such a cool topic but its an enormous one.
I think the most likely next hundred years scenario will be a mix of drones as well as manned aircraft and tanks/armoured vehicles.plus boots on the ground for sure.
but I think ultimately they my well become death machine relics from an ancient time.
I miss Ben
I agree with a lot of the other comments that the get around a table back to basics format is something that would be cool to have every now and again to break things up.
I kinda got lost on the whole weird world war stuff as I don’t know enough about it but felt there was a definite style difference between the minis shown. The helicopter felt like something from the 8-12 yo secion of Toys R Us while the two walkers were more 14-16 yo.
Well done to Justin who pretty much did another piece of hobby work during the show.
As for tanks, its a tough one as there are now many weapon systems that can crack their armour and even easily portable rpg shoulder mounted systems when they have the correct load out. Air superiority is such a key thing now as it not only dictates what can be deployed in the battle space but potentially what can be seen with some aircraft carrying anti satellite missile systems.
Phalanx gun systems have been on ships for a number of years and have been deployed as ground assets. I am not sure what intercept success percentage is on ship but on land they managed to take down 1 to 5/6, this would have a much higher success rate on something with as small a footprint as a tank. Also the land based success rate was against mortar rounds or rockets launched using very simple set up in Iraq and were not guided just aimed and launched. I think a miniaturised version of this for armour would keep tanks a viable option for future conflicts but worry about how ROE have evolved and their ability to make BDA and CDA prior to firing in areas with civilians.
Maybe its time for Oriskany to weigh in with some future specs from the Battletech universe as their are still tanks in that as well as mechs.
@dignity the DUST helicopter is based on the Soviet Union helicopter KA-27,so it would definitely fly. I do agree that I’m not sure about mixing the two ranges while same in genre they are tworking different worlds. I like the advanced look of DUST as it would show the advancements of war.
Tanks, I feel will be getting down sized in the next hundred years. Do to missiles and other weapon systems that are becoming more economical and mobile, Large rolling fortresses will not work well. Specially if warfare keeps on going in to built up areas. So lighter tanks with greater ways to hide and move around such built up areas. Mainly to act as mobile pillboxes then an fortress. Much like the German Wiesel AWC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiesel_AWC
They will have enough armor to withstand standard small arms fire, bring heavy enough fire power to chew through enemy cover and fast enough to get it there in a timely fashion.
As for lasers needing stupid amounts of power to work. Not any more, its still in its infancy but not for long. http://www.iflscience.com/technology/new-laser-beams-take-250x-less-power-make/
As for anti grav that is going to be a while. I can see us learning how to make electromagnets good enough to push against the worlds electromagnetic field to move things along far sooner then anti grav.
Fun show guys, was nice to relax in bed listening to you fellows chat.
What a great show! I laughed my ass off at Warren’s easily solved egg problem!
Tanks, hopefully in a hundred years people won’t be so stupid as to want to fight each other, so I hope there aren’t any tanks. But people are arseholes so war continues. So in a hundred years I predict human mutant tanks. A soldier who’s DNA is reengineered to mesh with the technology of a tank to become a Cyborg Tank. No need for A.I. as he’ll use his own brain linked to his computer systems to…basically a Dreadnought that can switch between walking and using tank tracks on it’s limbs or anti-grav and flies around like Iron-Man. A hideous nightmare.
good luck to drop beasts.
b squadron , that is so cool. you make me want join just on cool factor alone.
you best get growing moustaches. never mind t-shirts you need beasts of war b squadron bomber jacket and shades.
@warzan Hahahaha men you are a real king in butchering Names i just could not stop laughing Here is a little bit of French lesson (or you can ask Romain how it is Prononce 😉 ) ok let me help you in prononcing my user name ” Mage-the-L-ha-new-we” , try it 🙂 here is a little recap of where i am from so I am from Quebec Canada witch there are a lot of French Canadian witch i am, so thats why my user name is hard to prononce for an English guy but fun to hear for me, also looking at my Written english you must probably laugh at it looking how many mistake i am making in my Spelling (see you already start laughing lol ) now for the Tank Stuff i would say AI is the future for Skynet but the Ai would still need some Ground stuff Like Tank or Terminator to finish the job on the Ground and get an End to the Humanity
Good Show guy’s 😉
Ho and now i know youre Futur user name Warzan for me it will be Warzan the Butcher 😉
Thank goodness the 4Ground buildings are pre-colored: watching Justin assemble just that one partially took almost an hour and a half. And with that expanse of boxes scattered in the foreground (sorry, pun), he’ll have to be on “Holiday” until the WD bootcamp to finish.
Ah, such a relief to watch a laid-back and informal episode like this. Reminds me of the first episodes I watched as a Backstager (my least favorite segments of the later format are the repeating of news already posted on the site, and the Kickstarters).
Like others have said, hope you will do more of these episodes in the future.
Really liked the back to basics adventure that is this weeks XLBS Weekender, I have always liked some of your less produced episodes.
Looking at the DUST v. K47 debate on the use of the walkers back and forth, there isn’t as much difference in some of the walkers when it comes to size as most would think. The form factor is something to think about as DUST seemed to want to only have weird war stuff so all the models were designed around that. K47 is based on expanding WWII and adding in more and more weird war to your army. DUST has now (after the Babylon issues) gone after a mix of WWII and weird war to allow them to create their new version of the game.
The design differences seem to come from the way the designers went about creating their game. DUST all new weird war and K47 adding onto already created WWII armies. So long story short some of the DUST stuff will transfer over pretty well and I would think that with the new direction of DUST all the K47 stuff will go over easily. Just my thoughts on this very interesting debate and I will know more when I get hold of my K47 US walker I added to my Band of Brothers order and can really compare.
You guys need to do this more often. I loved this episode. 😀
Happy Sunday! I loved the lo-tech Weekender, thanks Microsoft!
Well done on the building @dignity. I recently built that very same kit and it took me at least a regular weekender and an XLBS to complete it. Although, I was probably paying more attention to the show 😉
Oh, well played, folks. Really pulled a winner out of a worst case scenario. I enjoyed the change though it will be good to get “Ben’s Giant Head” back in the mix. Justin beavering away on the building in the background was a bonus. Since I put my computer on my painting table to watch WeekenderXLBS while I paint and glue, the extension off camera of your work surface made it feel like we were hanging out and building together. lol
I love it when Warren jumps on the futurism horse and rides off into fantasy land. Quantum CPUs stealing the CPU cycles of alternate realities?? 😀
I loved the return to the older “informal chat” format. I’m not a fan of the current rigid format show, which leaves me cold. I’d much rather the week’s gaming news go into the Saturday show, and Sunday XLBS be more laid back.
I also really liked this weekender. Felt less scripted and more how my friends just talk. Not to say I don’t like the produced style as well, but this is a nice change. And, since this update that took down your PC, looked to be the Win10 anniversary update expect this to happen every 6 months as that’s Microsoft planned release cadence for new features going forward.
The only wargame I tend to play is Infinity, outside of that I’m mostly RPGs, but Antenocities has a nice etch-brass bar you can put on your bases that I feel doesn’t distract from the mini at all. http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/compass-bars-for-25mm-aw-bases.html
We Victoria and I think this Sunday’s XLBS was the best for a long while and may be going back to basics every now then is not a bad idea. Really great show. Good banter, more of it with those off the cuff shows it gelled better than some others with all the techno wizardry going on besides. 🙂

Victoria and Chris G
Really enjoyed the chat guys, and thanks for taking the effort to get an XLBS episode out. For some reason, I found the ‘tag team cameraman’ episode hilarious and it put a smile on my face that lasted for hours.
happy sunday guys a great improvised show made even better with copious amounts of Rum…..
ITS @warzan WORLD @warzan WORLD
Your discussions on tanks seemed to assume warfare was between militaries with equal technology level. Even if tanks started to be of less use in all-out war they would probably still be useful in a-symmetric conflicts, such as occupying civilian areas or attacking countries that are decades behind technologically.
I suspect the reality will be that as technologies are created to counter tanks other technologies will be developed to make them relevant again. Some periods will see tanks being top-dog and others will see them being side-lined.
If you’re into talking about the Paranormal I couldn’t recommend a podcast called The ParaPod more! Two comedians, Ray Peacok (a sceptic) & Barry Dodds (a believer) talk & argue about the paranormal and such things, it is genuinely hilarious!
happy sunday!
I missed ben but even without him great episode thanks guys! bow tshirt? yes please! Oh and on the subject of eggs, spin them.
@warzan I was told if you spin an egg on a flat surface and its fresh it will spin nicely, but if its rotten it will wobble.
a great fun show guys.
@warzan @lloyd @johnlyons @dignity when I think of futuristic tanks I think of the ones in a FASA game named renegade.

Great show as always guys. Along with others here, I really liked the rough nature of the show. Having actual projects being shown on the table which the guys wax lyrical was great. How about a one a month backstage rough session, less scripted but slightly longer or such like?
As for the future of tanks, I’m going 100% robotic with drones on land, sea and air. Actual human beings won’t be anywhere near battlefields of the future, just a mixture of AI and remote control where software will determine the best outcomes rather than firepower as firepower has the limitations of total annihilation for the human race whereas software will be hacked and counter hacked in ever increasing levels of complexity to determine the victor in combat.
We are so alike, @warzan. I would be absolutely pulling my hair out about not having the running order and all that… Don’t sweat it, fun show!
This was nice and laid back. I liked it. Also, loved the Wayne’s World fade out, I was thinking during the week that it would be funny if you did it, then it happened, haha.
So, if these are parallel realities, where say, human civilisation is more advanced and somehow hasn’t wiped itself out, or there are aliens, or a society of advanced AI, and the chip has ‘seen’ these, it raises a question:
(1) If it will wipe out humanity, is it biding its time so it can evolve into a higher state of being as an AI into the god-like tier
(2) Would it just see the whole thing with humanity as being pointless or evolving as not being necessary, and for whatever reason, decided to fizzle out and stop functioning
(3) A bit of a tangent here, but what if these super advanced AIs that could be around in the next 30+ years actually not turn out how we expect. There’s the Terminator series, Mass Effect, and a bunch of others that deals with machine sentience, morality, AIs, and how it will affect humanity. But… if these machines become so much more intelligent than us, will they not see some of the good qualities in humans, despite us being ants to them? Im not talking about the pet scenario, but perhaps these EAI (evolved AIs) could actually develop their own personalities, values and morals. Maybe some of them could end up being kind and benign, like say Vision from Avengers: Age of Ultron?
Food for thought, and I want skittles.
BEST XLBS WEEKENDER EVER!!!!!!
Great vibe!
I know you guys are in the UK, but I am member from the US. Hopefully for some of the things you are talking about you can make it such that the postage is more than the cost of the item.
For bases you might want to check out LITKO Game Accessories ( http://www.litko.net/ ) they do bases at different thickness they also have movement trays, and other things like magnetic bases.
16:00 and 1:23:00 = the best! whblhyl wihbywlhybwlybhwlybihybwliyb
Don’t let the AI win! We cna cheat because we’re all insane! Hahha!
D Wave the answer is 42!
Its strange but i also prefer this format as well
I love the “Back to Basics” format for XLBS.
On the matter of the future of tanks. Well, my belief is that the Main Battle Tank as we know it is fast reaching its end. I have to side with Lloyd on this one. Future wars will be dominated by sophisticated drones, and the further we go into the future the more sophisticated and deadly they will become. It will inevitably reach a point in which it will be far more cost effective to saturate an enemy or target location with swarms of disposable drones rather than to engage said target with more conventional arms. Now, I’m not saying that the Infantryman’s days are numbered. There will be situations in which highly trained soldiers equipped with unimaginably advanced technology will be the best option. However, I do think that the days of large armoured formations duking it out in wide open fields are coming to an end, at least certainly by the dawn of the 22nd Century.
Even today tanks are faced with far more threats than their predecessors from the Second World War ever had to face. There are all manner of smart munitions that can engage a tank far beyond the range in which it can fight back. The helicopter alone has made the modern battle space a very scary place for the tank. Additionally, all manner of automated anti-tank weapons are being developed. Such systems can be left in the field for decades, deployed by aircraft or artillery shells, they lay dormant until a hostile vehicle or vehicles enters their “threat bubble” at which time they saturate the target or targets in a fusillade of projectiles. I see drones in the future being used in a similar fashion, and any active defence systems that the tank may possess will simply be overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of threats arrayed against it.
If we’re going to go as far as a century into the future, we might speculate that by that time space has become militarised. I understand that there are currently treaties that prohibit the militarisation of space, but treaties can be ignored or made invalid with the changing political landscape. So, any treaty that exists today may well not exist in the future. If space-based weapons do become a thing, and it might be a ‘big if’, I see all large scale warfare becoming a thing of the past. Imagine, satellites armed with inert projectiles launched at Earth-based targets. The resulting kinetic energy released would be like a tactical nuclear weapon without the fallout. With weapons like that, any large scale armoured formations would be wiped out in an instant, as would any naval armada. You could possibly even see the end of the modern Carrier Group. One strike, and your multi-billion dollar aircraft carrier, its planes and all its escorting and auxiliary ships destroyed in an instant. In a future such as this one, I believe drones of every description would be the dominant force on the battlefield. And when ‘boots’ are required on the ground, they would be small, elite teams transported to any point on the globe within hours via space planes. This would be warfare of pin-point precision lightning attacks utilising drones and elite soldiers like a doctor might use a scalpel to remove a tumor. The side with space superiority would have the advantage, and I don’t believe this sort of warfare would be suitable for tanks. However, this all depends on whether “we” ever allow space to become militarised and whether space-based weapons would ever be a cost-effective option.
Regardless, drones are the future, and the more sophisticated and versatile they become, the more elements of our modern arsenals will become obsolete. Think of it this way, in 1916, proponents for traditional horse cavalry were convinced that their arm would forever be a vital part of warfare. They held onto this belief even after its successor, the tank, had proven itself in battle. They were absolutely adamant that the horse would always be required in a fighting role. This belief in the superiority of the traditional cavalry was so entrenched in British military thinking, that it hampered tank development after the war and when the next war came around, the British found themselves scrambling to catch up. How often do you see horse-mounted cavalry on the frontline today?
Jurassic World had it right boys. We’re going to turn Chickens into Velociraptors, strap camera helmets onto them and send them into warzones. Sweep & clear will never be the same again. The capturing alive part may be a little trickier though…
@lloyd I’m already mixing Dust vehicles and other lines with my Bolt Action and K47 miniatures and it’s a lot of fun. You can use the Dust light Walkers with no problems on the table. The only problem you have in scale is with how small the bolt action soldiers are to the Dust scale soldiers. 1 / 48 is a great scale to game in and you can make the Dust units hero units that in my opinion should be larger than the regular infantry anyway. Hope that helps if you join the Detroit tabletop gaming league on Facebook they have some great pictures to help you with putting the look you want together. Have fun and don’t let Justin put you off your game.
I hope there is a Let’s Play for Mythic Battles Pantheon. I’m very excited about this game coming out. Plus they’ve hinted there could be a crossover with Conan. At the least you’ll be able to use the maps.
Really enjoyed the improvised format, gents! It’s fun seeing you guys work on your hobbies while broadcasting the show – makes it feel a little more immersive, or at least like (as the audience) I’m joining your conversation you happen to be having at the hobby table.
Perhaps once a month the weekender takes place at the hobby table?
Great show.
I appreciate that the field of expertise here is gaming however the pedant in me can’t help but point out that D Wave is not tapping the computing power of infinite parallel universes. Quantum computing is more a set of extremely sophisticated mathematical formula and D Wave is hardware specifically built to utilise these formula. In short, standard computers store everything as either 1 or 0 and have to transform everything through a series of logical steps. Quantum computers are happy assuming that anything can be both a 1 and 0 at the same time and only needs to really know once they get closer to the answer. These are called QuBits rather than just plain old bits. It’s also not accurate, being a probabilistic in nature.
So while Quantum computing is complex, sophisticated and offers a tremendous leap computing technology, it isn’t a gateway to alternative dimensions or parallel universes!
On the topic of tanks, I’m also with Lloyd. Drones will fight the wars of the future. Whether those drones are hulking vehicles, nano tech or swarm like in nature is difficult to predict – possibly all three will have a role. With the leaps in technology that are and will take place, there will be no place on the battlefield for squishy humans who will not be able to compete with the speed, accuracy and availability of drone technology. With no need for humans, tanks will become a legacy.
Finally I though the Kings of War Empire of the Dead unit looked great. I like the idea of the game being based around foot prints to allow you to put together dioramas, with the blocks and sand drifts looking particularly good. I also see the point about having models that you can remove as ranked up armies, especially when their spears or pikes look great.
I did raise an eyebrow when I heard @warzan saying that quantum computers were stealing computing power from alternative realities. Like, somewhere there’s a a alternative reality where the weekender is alwayd cancelled because their IT is always being slowed down by a different reality’s Beasts of War team using a Quantum computer and nicking all their processing power! I can just see a version of @dignity sat scratching his head at why his computer is running so slowly despite no programmes running on it
Well I did chuckle at Justin sat in the corner (and in a hole as well by the looks of it) diligently gluing stuff together while the others discussed quantum mechanics.
Don’t base your Romans on big square unit bases! They won’t be able to fight on ships and defend forts!! 🙁
I’ve had a few days to think about it and I think that my answer to what will Tanks look like in 100 year’s time is that they will still be recognisable as tanks as we know them today. You have to realise that generally speaking a Tank is a way of providing the support of heavy weapons and they will continue in that role. I don’t think we will be seeing hover tanks of any kind, whether that be conventional thrust or anti-gravity devices. To my knowledge (and I could be wrong) there isn’t currently any serious research into anti-gravity devices so any “hover” vehicles will need to generate their own thrust, via directed jets, to lift them off the ground and that simply isn’t economical when you’re trying to lift something as heavy as a tank. Hover vehicles will also most likely need to land and anchor themselves in order to cope with the recoil of firing such heavy weapons. So I think for a long time to come, the tank as a heavy tracked or possibly wheeled frame will continue to be the norm. However, I do think that we will see jet powered VTOL aircraft start to potentially replace helicopters and even APCs. We also need to realise that Military Technology is no longer the leading edge. Most military tech is at least 10 years out of date when it enters service because of the lead times in developing and manufacturing defence equipment. In terms of computing power (which is the main component driving capability into modern defence products), companies like Google are working with technology far in advance of most military products and unless there is another global war I do not expect this to change. Defence budgets are constantly being cut and the arms race is effectively slowing down. Governments generally want much longer life-spans for their investment; The current Challenger 2 tank has been in service for 23 years and is about to undergo a Life Extension Program that should see it remain in service until 2025. That’s a 31 year life-span and I would expect that whatever replaces it will come with at least another 30 years of expected use, possibly even 40 years. That would put the successor of Challenger 2 in service until at least 2055, possibly 2065 during which time military R&D is most likely to be spent on new ways to generate or counter threats in a battlefield environment rather than an entirely new vision of the tank.
In terms of crew, I think you will see the crew requirements of tanks shrink down to 1 or perhaps, in 100 year’s time even down to 0. As computers start to take a bigger role in attack and ident and defence of the tank, the need for crew members will be greatly reduced. We are already seeing pilotless aircraft (such as the Reaper drone) and many countries have demonstrator programs for autonomous attack drones. The hard part, creating the autonomous flight has already been done, integrating weapons systems will be fairly easy in comparison. At present work hasn’t really started towards a similar concept for tanks and other military vehicles, not serious work anyway, but it is not inconceivable that by 2055 we will be doing so and that by 2116 we will have done so. However a pilot-less tank will probably still be entirely recognisable as a tank.
For comparison, look at how much technology has advanced in the last 100 years and yet I think that modern day tanks would still be recognisable as tanks to someone from 1916. The overall concept meets the requirements of what the tank is expected to do which is why it hasn’t really changed and until that is no longer the case, it will continue to be broadly similar for each new generation of tank.
@lloyd Not been through all of the comments to see if anyone else has mentioned this, but the bases that warlord supply with BA stuff come from Renadra, you can buy them in packs from their website (http://www.renedra.co.uk)
I’m barely halfway through this [yeah, NFL Football Sundays in the US now!] but this is hilariously awesome. 😀
Not that this is a 5th Sunday of the month, but it occurs to me that 4 times a year there’s 5 Sundays in a month. How about you guys do this every 5th Sunday in a month?
This’ gotta be a lot easier to do prep for. So give yourselves a lil break & give us all a treat of a 5th Sundays Chinwag episodes?
Blaster was here… & more immensely entertained than usual!
@dignity you still have time to enter the slaughterpriest painting comp 😉
So…. in 30 years time we will have created Aleph. And it will create lightly armored, responsive vehicles like the Maghariba Guard. And maybe those will fly. Sounds cool on paper, but I’ll probably opt to become a Post-human by then. It doesn’t sound like a good time to be a regular meatbag.
I liked the low-tech show. You don’t need much to be interesting.
And @dignity , don’t glue the foundation. You could hide humans … or walkers in there.
Finally got around to watching the 2nd half of this episode – I’m glad I was only painting a wash on the mini I was working on when @warzan got his answer about eggs… if I’d been painting a layer of colour I would have had a lot of rework to do when I burst out laughing and messed up a whole paint job.
Finally managed to catch up. Loved the format of the show – makes a nice change.
All this talk about tanks misses the other ways in which wars will be fought in future. Remember Clausewitz: war is the continuation of politics by other means. i.e. There is a political purpose to fighting a war, and physical fighting and killing is just one of the methods of doing so.
We will probabaly see more cyber warfare, criplling economies and causing chaos and confusion. Funding of extremist parties (not necessarily armed rebels) to destabilise countries, media propaganda offensives designed to distract, confuse and undermine trust in governments, etc. We are already seeing this in countries like Ukraine, Putin giving loans to the French National Front, RT promoting conspiracy theories, etc.
The aim of war isn’t actually to kill people. Rather, historically killing people has been the way to get what you want. If what you want isn’t to occupy land but to influence or control other societies, then you aren’t necessarily needing to kill many / any people. And when you are, fairly low tech ways will continue to be the way to do it. Assassintations of people sponsoring rioters or rebels, etc.
