Strike From On High With New Age Of Sigmar Celestant-Prime
August 29, 2015 by brennon
Games Workshop have a pretty big release for you this week in Age Of Sigmar. You'll have seen the leaks for this earlier in the week but say hello to the big new plastic kit for the Stormcast Eternals, the Celestant-Prime...
Avenging Angel
The model itself is rather massive standing at around the height of the Glottkin from The End Times line-up. Wielding Ghal Maraz in one hand and the Cometstrike Sceptre in the other you won't be able to escape its avenging wrath.
As a model I think it's a pretty good one from Games Workshop and the only thing that I don't like about the model is the swirling vortex beneath it. Otherwise I think it's a fairly awesome model.
It would have been interesting to see peoples reactions to the model if it had actually been larger in stature. By that I mean reaching that height on its own without the swirls. I think keeping him large but dominating like this with wings unfurled gives it the right amount of commanding presence.
As always you can download the rules for him HERE for free.
Airbrush Paints
In addition to this avenging angel they have also released a new line of Airbrush Paints...
"Ready-thinned and usable straight from the 12ml pot, this is a set of paints manufactured to the same exacting standard as every other range we produce."
I could see this being a useful tool for folks who use their airbrush a lot. Having them ready to use right out of the pot is handy. We shall have to wait and see on whether or not they are any better than the existing line-up out there in the hobby world right now.
What do you think of the Celestant-Prime?

I am trying to give AoS a go, i.m off for another game today.
But £48 for this? Thanks but no thanks. I can get 3 plastic tanks for Bolt Action for that price.
Also, while the airbrush paints are a good idea, putting them in dropper bottles would have it much easier to fill the reservoir on an airbrush.
…you missed your job as marketing guru for Wacoshop!
Expensive and over the top? Yes, but I NEED one to complete my chapter!
For me “I need one” has been replaced with “Do I need one?” and the answer to that question is more often than not a NO.
My opinion about this one has not changed with seeing it more. It’s still IMO childish looking thing. And expensive at boot.
I’m generally speaking a fan of GW, so this is the first time in a long time that I’ve thought a GW mini was just really bad. All that swirly crap just looks bad IMHO. You could easily build the mini without it, but it’s still not as great as it could be.
Airbrush paint bottles will always be a bone of contention. I’ve seen several debates online where people refuse to buy anything which isn’t in a dropper bottle, but many other people saying they hate dropper bottles and prefer to use cheap, disposable pipettes to transfer paint. I’m surprised that no company seems to produce a range of paint where you have a choice of which style of bottle/pot you want.
Bottle or flip cap. I see each having challenges and benefits. I have both but prefer dropper for most paints and airbrush work. The pot is good for washes right out of the pot.
Now that is one impressive miniature. I need him.
On behalf of the community I apologise for the people that thumbed you down. I see nothing in your comment that should truly warrant so many thumbs down, other than being dissentious from the pack on this model. Your comment was polite and to the point. One’s opinion on a model or work of art should be viewed as subjective and respected. I hope you get them negatives thumbed away, even though I disagree with this being impressive. But that is the beauties of opinions 😉
Great for the tabletop, even better for top of the Christmas tree this December!
A bit too naff. I think it would have looked a bit better with a Astorath the Grimm style pose. Gharl Maraz over his head ready to smash down. Would like to try reposing him but can’t really justify the expense.
Awesome looking model and you can pick him up at a more reasonable £36, I wouldn’t get into AoS if it wasn’t for online discounters that’s for sure.
With a lot of models I can see why some people would like it even if I don’t, but I am honestly struggling to see any appeal in this guy.
As @erastus pointed out, to me it just screams “swirly crap” and I find it almost overwhelming to the eye, not to mention the price.
I just don’t get it.
The airbrush paints on the other hand seem reasonable, again they are at the expensive end of the price scale but not ridiculously so and for the convenience of having the “correct” colours for my GW minis (particularly Space Marines) I can even see myself trying them out.
The super spread out wings, cloak that looks like it needs bribesmaids trailing behind to hold it up and swirly fart thing at the bottom create the illusion its a Glot-kin sized model. Take the farts, wings and oversized cloak away and you have a fat sigmarine.
So I think its not a fairly awesome model 😉 But with the silly price of £48 for a fat sigmarine, I don’t know why GW went all out and rounded it off to £50! 😉
The engineer in me like the technical feat that GW have managed over the last few years of floating minis.
Like most of the Stormcast the mini it self is not my taste, but I will have to get a few games of AoS in as beerhammer is trying out AoS this year (shameless plug, if any one feel like signing up for a AoS double tournament, above a beer festival in Milton Keynes, the 12th – ping me and I forward it to the TO)
Yea, I can appreicate the technical skill gone into producing GW mini’s these days. Unfortunately, most of what they produce just has that ‘something’ missing for me to actually like them.
Honestly, I think a lot of that feeling is due to the studio painting style. I’ve seen some absolutely stunning paint jobs done on the Stormcast whereas the studio ones are decidedly underwhelming.
I’ve seen stuff done by other painters and still find that bit of soul missing 🙁 I am also refering to GW stuff in general not just the sigmarines.
sigmarines…with no soul… is amusingly true lol
…right on!
Why are people getting voted down for showing enthusiasm? Doesn’t that break rule 1 – don’t be a dick?
You hit the nail on the head mate.
Because of the AoS haters, they will automatically hate every post here or elsewhere just because they can. Same goes on Youtube, there are some great battle reports but there is still a handful of twats who just have to thumb it down.
Not helpful.
… or get a Harbinger of Menoth for about half the price 😉
Although overall its a crap miniature at a stupid price.
I think if the swirls were painted a more earthly colour to look like dust and dirt from the floor in a vortex raising him up, they may make the swirls look better.
Currently he’s being chased by a purple and blue snake.
Crap was harsh, not good enough for the price asked.
How was ‘crap’ harsh? All GW have done is taken a standard sized mini (for that game) and added all the hee-haw so it appears bigger and can charge more for it. I hope the sales staff wear a mask while selling this.
Seems a touch tame under the circumstances.
I am quite happy with the model. It really has a commader’s feel to it. The vortex or whatever that is beneath him is also quite decent but could look better if it painted in another way. Maybe not the best and original idea, but still not a bad one. It does look a bit fragile thou.
Like I have mentioned before, the problem with the sigmarites is they are all the same silhouette. This could have been a model to break away from that, but take away the swirly stuff and its still a sigmarite who isnt really much bigger than any other. Not my thing, but it is very well done and I can see why plenty like it. I also don’t think the studio colour scheme does these models any favours at all. I’m sure the idea sounded great, and the artwork looked fantastic, but endless gold just doesn’t look so good in the photos of actual minis.
Paint, droppers are nice (i use plenty of vallejo), but not the end of the world without it, I also use Tamiya and Mr Color, both of which are in glass pots. Th el=killer is a flip top, because paint will always dry out in those, and with the higher levels of medium, faster in airbrush paints. A screw top like Tamiya and I think it would have been fine. I don’t use them any more, but can’t say anything bad about GW paints, its always been good stuff, so if you can put up with the flip top, I suspect these will be great.
Over the top and just a little bit silly (in a plate armoured diva kind of way) it may be, but I still like this model. With the right paint scheme and careful posing of the arms and head I think it will have quite the commanding tabletop presence (I would go for Ghal Maraz lowered, and the model’s head tilted down and looking in the direction of the hammer, as if the Celestant-Prime is picking out some unfortunate to wallop into the next realm over).
The price is admittedly… well… GW, but that as to be expected.
The rules are great fun, and fit in well with the whole avenging angel, hammer of Sigmar theme the Celestant-Prime has going on.
No thanks… still. And still a big no on price.
I wish they’d move on, already. All these Sigmar things look more or less the same to me, with a few different bells and whistles, and an eye watering price. Not a fan…. hopefully they can come up with something better for the other factions.
Seems the bloom is off the rose, anyway. Went into GW on a Friday for my monthly allotment of Agrax Earthshade and once again, it was almost empty… just two boys playing Oldhammer. So much for all the pomp and circumstance surrounding AoS.
Are they allowed to play Oldhammer in GW?
Only at the back table by the bathroom door.
Cheaper then I thought it would be. So thats good. If I get him I would paint him up differently.
Gonna give the airbrush paints a shot. Would have loved if the paints themselves were in dropper bottles, but just gonna work with what I got.
If you put some planning and a lot of time into it, I think this model would look great if you did some light sourcing. Though I’d definitely change the colours of the “swirly crap” – Erastus 2015.
A more dynamic pose would be nice, though nothing a bit of green stuff can’t fit.
Not sure why they made the airbrush paint. Just use the normal paint and water it down. Same cost, twice as much paint.
I use DecoArt acrylics for mini’s and terrain lol: $1 for 4 oz. Works fine almost as is in an airbrush too.
I like this model. It isn’t for everyone. As for the price it is what it is. I’ll probably get this model but I not right away. I’d like to see some other paint schemes though.
So this is the winged flavour of Sagmarines then. It looks…well, like the others but with messy “wings” and swirly…stuff beneath it. Sorry, but making a kit large and gaudy doesn’t automatically make it impressive. I like the mace.
Wauv.
Moral of the day, if you like anything GW stay away from the internet.
Such a stiff looking sculpt, i cant even imagine it performing any movement apart from floating. Hes got two arms and two legs, theres lots the sculptor could have done in the posing department but went with floating sculpture. Thats a problem i have seen with many of GWs recent plastics, they are somehow lacking “motion” even when they are supposed to be running, striking etc .. They have no “soul” so to speak.
I think they’re hard to pose because of the OTT armour. It doesn’t look like anything you could fight in to begin with, let alone move around in.
I believe another major problem with this mini is that the focal point is somewhere around his ankle.
In most minis the eye is basically drawn to the head and then wanders lazily over the rest of the mini. This model has far too much blank space in the center which is where the eye will tend to wander too. The head itself is far too easily lost, seeing as there is not even a face to focus on.
I know this might sound stupid but try it, look at the first picture of the story and tell me your eye doesn’t kind of default to the blank bit in the middle….
*Because if you look at the man the swirly crap will drag your view down to the middle, which is where the blank space is.
They use this technique a lot in painting, so I’m not making this up lol
I agree but the photography doesn’t help, have almost pure white wing/spike things on a pure white background makes them vanish to the eye. I think IRL the wings would be more visual, and draw your eye to the sigmarite/marine guy.
Yes that is true
Looks too much like a good version of nagash to me?
For all the people who don’t like the swirly celestial energy stuff on this model, there is a section on sub assemblies for the Celestant-Prime in the back of the current White Dwarf that seems to indicate that it is quite possible to simply leave the entire thing off if that is your peference. I have been looking at pictures of the sprues for the model and from what I can see it wouldn’t be difficult at all to create a version of the kit held aloft by the cape thing alone (though fragility in transport would definitely be an issue with either build).
I am still not sure which approach would look better overall, but if you did decide to leave off the energy vortex then you would have a very unusual piece for your bits box. It might be of use in converting a celestial wizard casting a spell. Or perhaps as a spell effect or objective marker on the tabletop, should such a thing be called for.
Another option, for those with the modelling and painting skill, would be to replace the vortex thing with arcing skeins of celestial lightning linking model with base, perhaps using fine wire bent into shape and then painted in a suitably blue-white fashion. I saw the effect once years ago on a conversion of Jain-Zarr. It would also offer options in the paint scheme, with regard to object source lighting and blending the armour colour up to a more energised tone where the lightning bolts met the model. I have seen some nice effects in this vein being used on Stormcast weapons recently.
For those who favour a Celestant-Prime who channels celestial lightning to get their Mortal Wound dealing ranged attacks over the use of the Cometstrike Sceptre, the option to have a corposant-wreathed gauntlet or similar might be of interest as well.
You shouldn’t have to fix a man-sized single that costs 48 pounds.
watered down paint at the same price is a brilliant idea, but really should cost more as it’s for fancy sprayguns 😀
Models with frilly willy things beneath them seem very popular over at GW lately. For the odd model it might be ok, but this one really clashes visually. These releases all seem to look the same but with more and more bits added on to denote their rank. Disappointing really when so much could have been done with poses etc to create interest instead of more ‘stuff’ stuck on.
the model look ok to me but i would’nt use the swirling thingy. But then, i look at the price …. thats the insulting part .
48£ for a man-sized model?! (cause if you get rid of the swirl and the wings, he is just another sigmarine). GW are seriously, SERIOUSLY, insane.
Well my first thought was ‘£48!’ but then I would pay that for a forgeworld horus heresy character series so I suppose if you’re into Age of Sigmar then why not. I’m not sure it’s a price bracket to attract and retain new players for long though.
I like the model itself but for me the base and cloak look like they’re designed first and foremost to hold the model in the air rather than to add to the model’s aesthetic appeal and so I find it a bit annoying.
An awesome model. In terms of what they can achieve technically.
I was giving the whole AoS thing the benefit of doubt and even started to paint a Sigmarine squad..I really wanted to like this all..!
Now I’m not really a gamer anymore so I can’t make any valid comments about the game as such but from the hobby perspective I’m getting bored with this already.
Sorry GW, but I’ll stick with Bolt Action as my main focus for the foreseeable future.
For fifty quid I rather buy 3 StuGs plus some infantry 😎
Fear the Harkonnen floating Baron…who now flies instead of floats.

Thats right GW, you are up there with the french masters of sculpting, and then some .. the prime is so fine hes worth both of these lads :p i know they cant substitute for a sigmarine prime but still .. it put things in even better perspective, atleast for me.
My first thought was: How on earth do jo bring that guy to a gaming session without breaking off half of those “beam-spikes”?!
If you like it: buy it, build it, paint it and put it on a shelf.
I think this looks cool. A bit of a departure for GW, style-wise but an impressive figure in its own right
Leaked images of next week’s releases are now floating about the intertoobz, and amusingly the Prosecutor hero – the Knight-Azyros – is, to my eyes at least, probably a rather nicer kit than the Celestant-Prime. I can see components from this model popping up in many Celestant-Prime conversions in the near future.
Here is a link to War of Sigmar for the image –
http://war-of-sigmar.herokuapp.com/bloggings/153
Swap the sword out for an ornate Warhammer (perhaps a converted lightning hammer from the Paladin kit) to represent Ghal Maraz, augment the wings a little, and have the lantern stand in for the Cometstrike Sceptre. It would certainly be a less over the top (and probably cheaper) option.
On the model’s own, unconverted merits, I really rather like the Knight-Azyros from what I can see here. He certainly seems like a nice option for leading a wing of Prosecutors or even an entire heavily angelically themed Stormcast army.
One last note; is that a Decimator axe I can see being carried by the foreground Prosecutor on the right of image?
Looking carefully at the image , it is just possible to see another Prosecutor hero in the background at the right of the image with a bow and what appears to be a pet eagle. Apparently, this is the Knight-Venator kit, a winged shooty hero type. Know I am imagining the Celestant-Prime flanked by a Knight-Azyros and Knight-Venator, one on each side as an angelic Praetorian Guard for the Hammer of Sigmar, at the head of an entire flight of Prosecutors.
If you are going to go with the heavy duty angelic imagery, go big or go home (which would be up in this case I suppose). 😉
‘Know I am imagining’? A tiny bit unintentionally pretentious there. That is supposed to be ‘now I am imagining’.
I think I see what effect they were going for with this mini, but what this model is missing is a very powerful spotlight directly behind it shining into the viewers eyes, and a choir going “aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAHH”.
Love this model will round out my stormcasts nicely. Loving AOS at the moment played 4 games now with the last one being a 100 wound battle and it was genuinely epic so much fun. Thought I was done with GW ignored them for years but they have got me big time with AOS the buggers.
