Unboxing: Moonstone By Goblin King Games
August 15, 2019 by ludicryan
Ryan and Gerry wax lyrical about the whimsical world of Moonstone from Goblin King Games.
A premise that is genuinely interesting. A skirmish wargaming system that even Ryan wants to get into. Adorable miniatures featuring a freakin pug!? Moonstone is off to a pretty good start in the eyes of Ryan and Gerry. The combat system alone takes its HEMA influences and mixes it in a card-based format.
What faction tickles your fancy in Moonstone?

Interesting, but I’d need to see a playthrough to commit money.
All the rules are free to download, as are the 2 card decks and stat cards…. print off the cards, spend some time cutting them out, and throw down with some paper-dollies (or just proxy models on 30mm or 40mm bases)… 3 models vs 3 models games are great to learn the rules and there is just an amazing amount of depth in the two card systems.
I’d consider printing cards if my printer wasn’t a total Jeremy Hunt and cost 50 quid to refill (it won’t use replacement cartridges, only official ones).
Got it – it’s a great game, the first miniature game I could convince my girlfriend to play.
Healing by spanking is the best idea ever! Lovely looking book and minis.
Healing by spanking… is that why so many politicians and celebrities are into S&M?
Really fascinating game with wonderful-looking miniatures. Very tempted by it…
@brennon – you should try and make the Gotham 2 Samaria Event in October at Element Games in Stockport – a bunch of us just take games and demo them to others or play them for a weekend, so a really relaxed social gaming, I run moonstone demos there and there is now quite a few players, so if you wanted to see the game first hand you’d be more than welcome.
This is my favourite game so much that I spent all of Salute demoing it for the team.
The main mechanics were explained ok in this unboxing but hopefully a let’s play or round breakdown will follow to show you all more clear rules and how you use energy to perform actions (rather than activations).
A couple of key mechanics were not explained.
1) the arcane/range abilities that use those coloured cards. You draw cards based on arcane stat and your opponent draws a flat 6 cards from the same deck (all colours and catastrophes shuffled into one deck). As the attacker you then choose a card (it isn’t drawn at random) and you place the chosen card facedown and tell your opponent what card you have played, the key here is that you can bluff!!! You play it facedown and can say whatever card you like. Need a blue 3 but don’t have it in your hand, play a pink 2 facedown and lie through your teeth instead.
As with life however being caught lying has consequences.
After paying the facedown card and declaring what it is, your opponent has a choice to make. They can agree – in which case you apply that card you said it was to the ability and resolve it, you do not need to ever show your opponent if you were telling the truth or not.
OR
Your opponent can say that they do not believe you!
You then reveal the card faceup. If you had been telling the truth then the ability resolves , but because you were honest you may perform the ability again straight away (using cards in hand) without paying the energy cost!
If you were lying however , then your opponent can replace the card you played with one from their resisting hand of 6. So if they have a catastrophe card they play that and the ability resolves as if you’d played a catastrophe card.
The bluff and double bluff for arcane is amazing fun and really allows a player to play the opponent , if you can manipulate your opponent then you never have to rely on a bad card draw.
2) the other thing is to say that the game is not about killing a troupe. It down help. You play 4 turns and whoever is carrying the most moonstones wins. Within a round it’s an igoyougo with one model doing all their actions before your opponent uses a model and back and forth. Activation is supremely important to get the most out of synergies between the models.
Models can also save energy to react to an opponents turn. After every action is resolved an opponents model (just one per action) with
energy can spend it to dodge 1”. This allows some cat and mouse with melee but also helps highlight that positioning is also really important.
The game seems fluffy but the mechanics are really tight and very tactical, whilst remaining fun.
The card based arcane and melee are amazing and really unique.
Happy to field any queries about the game.
A third faction is just being released via Kickstarter and will retail later on – but existing factions are also getting new straight to retail models in late August.
The website moonstonethegame has rules, cards and standees all for free if you want to try the game FOR FREE!
The designers are very active on the moonstone players Facebook group too.
It really is a great game with a very low buy in price, but al the minis are individual collectors items full of character.
Marktarver is correct on the rule differences.
Got to say; as the head writer (or as I like to say World Builder) of Goblin King Games, I am really pleased to hear you like what we’ve done!
It’s a great piece of work. Congratulations on it! I’m hoping to get a game with Gerry at some point.
I’ll need to steal the minis away to paint first
Well i’m only over the pond, so happy to arrange a weekend to fly over and take you through a game Ryan 🙂
Well this has caught my eye!
I’ll be looking into Moonstone further this weekend.
The whimsical nature of this, combined with the dice and card system have me wanting to introduce this to my group of players that don’t generally play Miniatures games, (aka RPG only players).
An interesting little game
Definitely wasn’t expecting so much grimdark lore in such a whimsical game!
Looks and sounds very characterful and unique. If I was getting regular games in anymore then I’d be tempted to pick it up and give it a try
I’d be interested in seeing how lightweight it is compared to other skirmish games. I doubt I could get my whole group invested in it, but I could see myself buying the starter and some extras to give us some basic four player options to break up playing the same games over and over.
You can have a fun game with just 3 models per player – you just lose out on the fun synergies you can explore if you play a “full” game.
The rules are very lightweight, easy to understand but a lot of hidden depth and tactical play. So it can be a pick up and play game, but I think you will find that once you start you want to then explore different list builds, troupe types and all sorts of things.
Is that the normal starter set or a kickstarter version? Looks lovely anyway. Consider my interest peaked!
normal starter set.
Might be able to get my daughter and wife into this game. Looks very fun.
Some fascinating mechanics on show. I like it!
I’m currently fighting with my wallet to allow me to buy the rulebook, if nothing else. It’s very pretty.
I am loving this game, I have been interested about it but now seeing it I love the characters and models.
Far and away my MOST FAVORITE new game… I got into this right as the Leshavult KS was wrapping up and immediately printed off all the paper-dollies, card decks, and stat cards and got to playing it with my buddy and we were hooked! Such great mechanics! Then I was able to track down some models here in the USA and immediately painted up the Firespitter and pickedup the Starter Set and got to putting those on the table. I’ve since gone all in on Faeries, gotten a friend to pick up Gnomes, picked up Gnomes for myself, and then have pre-ordered the next wave of Faeries & Gnomes. Can’t wait to play with the new toys and love the community for this game and Tom & the guys @ Goblin King plus the Moonstone Podcast & Ye Old Battle Reps do a great job! #FaeriesRule #CommonwealthDrools
