Flames of War FTW: How To Use Spearhead & Infiltrate Rules!
January 16, 2015 by warzan
Welcome back to another installment of Flames of War For The Win! This time Dave & Warren are having a look at the Spearhead & Infiltrate Rules, two very sneaky and useful parts of the game.
Do you guys like this creeping approach or would you rather charge in there like Patton!?
Let us know how you use these rules on the tabletop below!

I am more about methodical tactics. Mind you if Jerry desires a good thrashing, I am willing to oblige an armada of fireflies on full throttle.
Really glad to see more fw ftw ! Would really like to see you and Dave playing a game or two including all the rules you have been exploring in this series. Fw ftw is still my favourite series you guys have done.
It’s really interesting to see all the intricacies of the rules. I’m surprised how well the game is designed, since even though there are rules that can have a huge impact on the battle, the rules themselves aren’t too complicated. I agree that it’d be nice to see more games of FoW (and Bolt Action) in the future.
Im really looking forward for you guys explaining more about this game, i just remembered how i played my first demo game on this and i had a blast i just remember my dad getting me a Firefly, a HQ platoon, and a Achilles tank destroyer, im really looking forward for this game, hope to get a army ready soon
FOW, is an interesting game to play and i will look foward for more game play video so i would be ok to start playing. With our group
Thanks forthe vid 🙂
Finally a new video to learn something new 🙂 Thx guys!
i do enjoy these vid dont play flames of war yet but its allways intresting to see the tacs as they sometimes can be brought over to over game systems
I really enjoy these videos especially the ‘Know Your Enemy’ sections. This series has been one of my favourites on BOW so far I think.
No creeping about, just CHARGE!!!
This series has actually made me want to start the game! shutout for ole Norn Iron
Dave is always so dapper (he is The Doctor).
I wonder what happens when 2 people end up fighting one another and they have the same list (Patton versus Patton)?
Table explodes.
Actually you first roll off to see who is the attacker, as you are both “always attacking” and both a tank company. The defender gets no spearhead move, as patton only gives you spearhead move if you are the attacker.
Than the table explodes, especially the side where the defender deployed.
There’s still a few things left out of the requirements for Spearhead moves/Infiltrate. Specifically; you can’t get too close to the enemy and a Spearhead move must end outside your deployment zone.
Also, getting the first turn from a spotted Infiltrate works completely differently: you automatically give your opponent the first turn if any teasm ends its Infiltration move withing 16″/40cm of an enemy team and within its LoS. No skill tests involved.
Even if nothing ends within that distance and LoS, you have a 1-in-6 chance of giving your opponent the first turn.
All of this was pointed out before final editing, but it looks like some of it was missed in editing, which is kinda unfortunate.
I am just starting a Sovjet list and the infiltrate rule seems really handy. A friend of mine also uses Patton and I really hate it to fight against him.
Sadly you’ll never be able to use infiltrate against Patton. In order to be able to infiltrate you must be the attacking player in a mission with prepared positions (I think this is correct but don’t have the rulebook to hand to check). As Patton ‘always attacks’ you can never infiltrate, which is really annoying.
Every episode of FOW FTW is great… we want more 🙂
And as always: bowties are cool 🙂
Another great vid. Agree it be good to some more bat reps!
the video really helped out keep it up
Informative as always, always looking forward to Know Your Enemy.
I like also the reference to ‘Symphony of Destruction’, Megadeth fan 😉
Thanks for the video
These Flames of War Vids are excellent, please can we have some more.
What was the bit of scenery about a foot in front of Warren? I thought it looked remarkably like a flying saucer.
Naah warren wouldn’t do a thing like that at all he is history all the way … What UFO 😉
If Piper and Patton meet and they both have the always attack rule who goes first?
You roll off.
If two forces both have Always Attacks or Always Defends, they cancel each other out.
So if those forces are a different type of company (Fortified, Infantry, Mechanised or Tank) their types will decide which one is the attacker, as usual.
If both are the same type (which is the case with US Tank Companies with Patton vs Kampfgruppe Peiper), both players roll a die, re-rolling ties.
Whoever rolls highest has to be the attacker.
fow ftw FTW! 😀
nice vid. you 2 should start playing games and air them.
Great vid guys
I think Warren says it best.
A symphony of destruction.
The Patton rules are strong. pricey but in reality they are worth it. seems like there will be a lot of Patton Jrs. running around.
Hurray!
My favorit Show is back! Thanks a lot guys and keep on making shows (maybe a little bit more often :)).
Would said German Kommando unit be Otto Skorzeny?
Really enjoy this series. As stated above I would love to see a game in which you include the rules you have gone over so that we can see them in action. Remeber always more tanks and more destruction!!!!!
Another great vid. Wish you guys did FoW stuff more regularly.
Really would like to try this game
Good to see FoWFtW continuing… Can’t wait for more!
Looking foward to win this starter set!
well wax my legs and call me gladys!
just as i sell my germans for the lure of warmachine i am sucked in once again and its gonna be more painting and more headaches Doh!!!!
so when are you guys doing a battle report? soon hopefully.
When is the next battle rep gunna come? You pair are fan-bloody-tastic
Without doubt, if you don’t pay attention to tactics you’ll die screaming, well crying anyway.
I have really enjoyed this latest series but I would also like to see some battle reports and see the rules and tactics in action and see how this has changed their tactics from the time when they first started.
Another great video. Looking forward to possibly seeing any new videos you guys playing out a game.
I would love to win the FoW Starter Set and start with FoW
I had been looking into the Infiltration rule for next week’s game so when I came to that part of the video I rushed to get my rulebook… Because I understood something completely different.
If you want to know how Infiltration works, read p250 of the rulebook and ignore this video
oh, and I am thinking about going for being automatically detected, let the enemy have the first turn, open fire and not being gone to ground anymore… easier for me to shoot him up on my first turn 🙂
Great vid as always. Love watching these for rules clarification and rules I wished I’d use more often.
I still need to try Flames of War, but I don’t want to get bogged down in the historical nature of it.
Love the exploring of the rules you guys are doing
Not played FoW in far too long, but these videos always get me itching to bring out the panzergrenadiers!
I do love these flames of war videos. Not a game I play, at all, but great viewing anyway.
I like your enthusiasm and the show is a lot of fun to watch. But when making mistakes, as seems to be the case quite a bit in this show, it would be helpful to have the corrections in text with the article. It’s a bit hard to quickly read all the overlay text during the video while you are already discussing the next step of the tactic.
seems like history is not the biggest thing here
but it seems like a interesting game nonetheless. i should try it, once
Personally I like late war german armies that are playing defensively – Panzerfausts, Pak 40 75mm AT guns backed up with some artillery and a few medium tanks or Assault guns for a mobile reserve. Set up right this kind of army can be hard to shift.
Great video again. I hope to try the game sometime as it looks really good. Keep putting them out!
Another Great Video, it would be awesome to see some more Battle Reports of FOW. 🙂
Once again a great video.
This is one of those games you could easily get your mates to play especially with the starter set. It just looks brilliant!
nice to see all the hairy bits newcomers dont know about being explored
Great vid guys
The reason I like FoW so much is all the rules working together the way they do. In each episode I learn some new aspects of the game. Even with some of the rule mistakes it’s really helping me to learn the game.
Luckily I managed to convince my local game group of the awesomeness of the game recently and its coming more and more.
What I dont really understand is why you need rules for Patton and Peiper etc
Why not just let the players use their forces like they want to?
Just seems to add yet more rules for people to remember
I really enjoy FTW! Keep making these.
I too as others have said, would like to see an entire game played. I’m trying to get more of my table top gamer buddies to try this game. A battle report, (Beasts of War STYLE), would help me sell it I think.
Do like the Spearhead rule, but I do think that character rules do spoil games at times. Would rather have Company vs Company and battle it out.
Very educational as ever, must get into FOW
Really excited that this series is still going. Can’t wait till you both play another full game.
the soviet infiltrate is especial useful in fighting withdrawal where you only have 6″ to deploy in if you are attacking.
I’ve really been enjoying the FoW videos, so keep up the good work. The more I see of the game, the better it looks and the more I want to get involved. Just need to find someone else to play against!
It´s a great FoW video guys. Thanks for all the explanations.
Thanks guys. I always find these tutorial videos helpful.
More please!!! And some battle reports!!! And more Dave 🙂
I was thinking of picking up the starter box for my dad and me actually, these videos make it look really cool and theyre damn helpful!
Another good video!
I bet that bazooka army would have trouble against my panzer army 5 panthers, 4 tiger 1, and 3 konigstigers
Man, I really want to try this game out. I’ve seen the models in my FLGS, but haven’t had the cash to start collecting.
I am just getting into FOW, slowly building up my forces (both German and US, have not quite made up my mind which to go with as yet), I have been inspired by the various episodes of FOWFTW, keep them coming and I agree with some other posts here that a battle report would be good to see showing how some of the rules shown in the more recent instalments are put into effect during a full game.
I have to say, the FoW FTW series has been absolutely amazing. i’ve watched the whole thing, and it’s incredibly informative, and really makes me want to get stuck in with flames of war!
Not FoW player but always a good view!
another great video also glad to see fow ftw back.
question about the open fire box set, have the rules in it been updated to 3rd edition? I have been considering picking it up but all the pictures of the boxes contents show the 2nd edition rule book. I guess it comes down to how bad I want the models.
All I can say is….. FOW FTW
Another awesome FOWFTW These videos open up the game for more excitement and fun
I just stumbled across the Beast of War a few day ago and glad I now have a site for all the miniature gaming news that I can ask for. I have yet to play Flames of War, but your videos make me want to branch out and find a game shop that carries (and plays) this game on site so I can delve deeper into great WWII games that I used to play years ago. Keep up the awesome rules and content.
Keep em coming guys!
Thought I had decided which army to play but now you’re giving other ideas every time I watch a new vid! 🙂
Awesome vid, maybe you 2 should verse each other
Great to see you guys back in the aether.
The doctor should prescribe FW FtW once a week though!
Nice video. I never thought of using infiltrate like that and I did not know desperate measures spetsnaz gave that to tankovy. The more you know! Za Rodinu!
need to think about getting patton now. he seems a must for my us armour
Nice. I love these videos. I like all the tactics talk that make it more than just a game of rolling dice against each other like some games.
Great to get to see more of Flames of War
I’m still building my starter set, love this series of videos. I find the rule book a bit overwhelming at the moment, so this is a great intro into the more advanced stuff. I too would love to see you put some of these rules into practice with a game or two with Dave.
I hadn’t considered using one of the named leaders. Named characters are so often a point of contention in some games. Maybe I should…
I have been watching a load of these flames of war videos on youtube and BOW, will be getting a open fire set later this year once my studies are completed and I have a bit extra money.
