News reached Tintagel that King Arthur and his army had been defeated and that all was lost. Seeking to learn the truth as fast as possible, Thebalt sailed to the north of the island and entered Tuathan himself. Following the trail of dead soldiers, Thebalt rapidly found the King.

Arthur was trying to harness the wyrdness to reforge Tuathan into a new, perfect Camelot. He needed Thebalt to buy more time. Thebalt realised how shapeable everything was in Tuathan, so he used his imagination to try and for new Menhirs around them. It worked, and bought Arthur the time he needed to complete his work. But Arthur wasn’t up to the task, and the castle he formed became twisted and imperfect – eventually Arthur collapsed with the effort. Thebalt had no choice but to retreat and try t o carry the King to safety.

Thebalt managed to lead the King, and several hundred surviving soldiers, out of Tuathan. But once clear, the terrible glowing monster that had killed Merlin descended upon them. It did not attack. Instead it spoke to Thebalt. It explained that Avalon was part of a mystical cycle. Humans were supposed to live and die in their old homelands, then their soles were used to create Fore Dwellers here on Avalon, and when they died their soles were used in it’s land to create life. When it died, its soul would return to the human homelands and the cycle would repeat. By invading Avalon, humanity had broken the cycle.

The creature asked Thebalt to turn back and undo the damage Arthur had done. It took Thebalt into the future to see how humanity would fare in the future they were creating for themselves. Thebalt was given a few hours to explore, then he would be asked to make his final decision.

Thebalt found himself in an abandoned Caunacht, the very settlement he had helped found only a couple of weeks before. Although it was deserted, he could see that the people must have left voluntarily – all their possessions were gone too and there were no bodies or signs of violence. Thebalt climbed the top of one of the giant swords to the south. From there he could see several cities across the island. The monster was wrong – humanity obviously flourished for many centuries before starting to decline.

Thebalt met the monster and declared he would stick to Arthur’s plan, and fight the monster if necessary. The monster paused, then declared it would honour the decision. It departed, and Thebalt returned to the present. HE managed to get King Arthur back to Tintagel. The war was over.
