Don't look back
Game night
The gourd reaper is out trying to protect its jack o lanterns. All the players had to do was destroy three of them. I printed out the list of actions for each character so they could figure out they wanted to do. I was amazed moat of them did pay attention to this. We had four characters each controlled by teams of three or four. Which meant each player turn took sometime as they all argued about the best course of action.
The reaper can pass through walls and deals damage with a ghostly scream that causes terror. In close combat it's attacks do the same damage as the victim is scared. So the more terror they have the more wounds it causes. This led to a lot of players realising they had to perform the take a break action or get in the safety of lights to reduce that score
Due to the heightened tension of Halloween it wasn't long before the reaper manifested and headed straight for the nearest victim who was armed with a shotgun. I guess that's standard equipment for a camping teenager. Unfortunately due to the reapers ethereal nature any physical damage can only wound it once and it has 5 wounds.
Our teen stumbles away towards the light for safety but trips. Meanwhile the cheerleader being the empty headed stereotype they are hops over the pumpkin they are meant to be destroying in order to search the house. This triggers a jump scare that moves freight tokens her way but she did find a machete. I presume it had been used to carve the pumpkins.
The reaper slays its victim but one player remembers they have luck tokens so a reroll later and he's back on his feet.
After destroying their first pumpkin the reaper in anger leaves it's original victim and heads after the test if the teens. Our geek spends some time searching the rv and comes out with an antique sword. By now the teams come up with a plan. The shotgun weilding hero stays down the street causing a distraction action which drags the reaper in their direction and frees the rest to attack the remaining pumpkins .
The cheerleader destroyed one pumpkin with her machete and the reaper responded by pinning her to the front door of the house with its sythe. That character hadn't controlled their fear and was played by a group of girls who were acting as air headed as the character. It came naturally to them. Mean while the jock and the geek destroyed the final pumpkin on the other side of the street. The only girl character was dead so there would be no making out back at the campsite. The reaper had been defeated.
As you can see we had a lot of players znd it was a bit like heading cats. I rant the fame and controlled the killer. There was a lot of good natured banter and genuine moments of tactics being realised and used. It was one of the best game nights we have done. I think the nature of the game helped with its popcorn horror movie approach tvat they all got on board with. I hope we can go it again..
