Howdy Partners

We’re digging deeper into the unspeakable horrors that lurk within the mines near the ruins of Brimstone. This time I’m painting up the stranglers.

Nothing says ‘sweet dreams’ quite like creatures with gaping maws and head tendrils strong enough to snap a cow in half. These frightening creatures get a lot of attacks but they’re not that powerful.

These horrors are straightforward to paint with each group of three taking less than two hours. I chose to paint them in two color schemes, similar to how I approached the tentacles, to help identify them on the board. As a result I’d have both regulars and elites and easily know which is which without a token.

The Green Ones

I started with a dark brown primer (Colour Forge Hyrax Brown) and then hit them from the top with a blast of off white (Colour Forge Wight Bone).

Next was a light dry brushing of green (Pro Acryl Green) on the high points.

That was followed by a pre-shade of green shade (GW Athonian Camoshade) all over and particularly in the recesses.

Finally I hit the whole body with a pale green contrast paint (GW Plaguebearer Flesh).

All that was left was to paint the teeth a bone or off white color (Pro Acryl Bone) and, once dry, coat the bone in an undead contrast paint (GW Skeleton Horde).

The Blue Ones

I primed in the exact same way as the green ones and then did a light dry brush of light blue (Pro Acryl White Blue).

The pre-shade was a blue shade (GW Drakenhof Nightshadow) and heavy.

I then did the final coat with a blue contrast paint (GW Frostheart).

For these, I wanted to go a step further and match the official art more closely. I took a purple contrast paint (GW Magos Purple) and thinned it slightly with water before painting it around the outside of the maw. It is alright if it gets on the teeth.

Once that was completely dry, I went back to the Frostheart and brushed outward from the maw, stopping just beyond where the purple ended. This helped blend the colors.

I then did the teeth the same way.

The Bases

I painted the bases dark brown (any will do) and covered them in brown crackle paint (GW Agrellan Earth). Once it was set, I glued on some tufts and painted the rim coal black.

That wraps up the stranglers! Up next will be the numerous, horrible, and (sadly) baseless spider creatures.

If anyone has alternate suggestions for crackle paint that matches Agrellan Earth I’m all ears!

Big Fan of SOB, just wish I’d discovered in my younger days when I had the space and time to play through properly!
