Official E3 Warmachine Video Game Trailer!
June 22, 2011 by beerogre
Forget Space Marines and all that guff... here's what we want... Warmachine!
Check out the stunning visuals and top notch Iron Kingdoms style. There's lots of magical weapon effects and big hulking metal machines ready to do battle.
The only downside so far is that the gameplay looks to be heading in the direction of action/arcade rather than action/strategy.
When fighting those squads of Winterguard, it looks like the player using Stryker is button-bashing their way to victory.
Although, perhaps I'm being a bit too premature. In order to market the video game to "non-wargamers" I'm sure they have to focus on the mindless violence and gameplay, rather than tactics and background.
Don't they?

Woooooooooooooooot
HELL YEAH ! not playing the table top but this will find its way to my computer for sure !
Boner!!!!!!
Ooooooooooooooooooooooh? I had no idea this was on the horizon. I now know what my next video game purchase will be. Go ahead. I’ll wait. 🙂
It looks great, but like Andy says, probably a bit too arcady for me.
It will sell better for that though I’m sure.
I must say though, PP’s designs transfer to the virtual world very well, if this game does well, I can see plenty more following it.
yea and it looks as if the game devolopers are keeping to nearly the same timeline as Warmachine.
BoW Justin
This looks absolutely mint!!! This will open up PP to so many new people, can’t wait to get a copy
They’ve probably gone the route of action/arcade because strategy games are very awkward on consoles and the PC release of this game will probably be a console port as well. I would’ve liked to see a strategy incarnation made specifically for PC but it looks like Privateer Press are taking the safer option which is a shame.
Still, it’s early days yet. The game might actually be good.
This is abso-bloody-lutely amazing !
I think I need a change of pants now…
BoW Romain
Gears of Warmachine? 🙂
This has some great models and animation.
I was kinda hoping they’d do something like the Dawn of War games, an RTS maybe, but this is cool too.
If anything, an action game like this will reach a broader audience get the Warmachine name more exposure. Maybe it’ll bring a few more peeps into the tabletop game.
The DoW games did that for me with Warhammer 40k, so I know it’s possible.
I will defiantly be getting this one!!!!!!!! Finally something without crappy space marines!!!!!!
It’s looking quite amazing I must say. Personally, I don’t care if it’s a hack’n’slach or strategy game, it is PP’s first venture into the video gaming world. Therefore, as long as the gamplay is fluid (minimal bugs), the storyline is accurate (and/or fun), and the graphics are up to scratch, then I shall have nothing to complain about.
Definitely looking forward to this!!!
Looks amazing anyone else think stryker was staring at sorscha for a bit too long? ,someone has a fan!
Sorcha ftw
Never would have imagined techno as a background music for WM.
Dubstep*
Ninj’d 😛
Do you happen to know who the artist is?
While it looks good enough, as a game I think this will be disappointing on nearly Duke Nukem Forever levels. Just from the trailer it is clear that it will some kind of action hack-and-bash/slash game and from the looks of it, not necessarily a very good one. Yes, since this is a trailer, it might not at all reflect the final product. However, speaking as someone who has worked as a video-game reviewer for ten years, a trailer at this level, showing as much gameplay as this does, probably mean the result will be quite close to what we are seeing.
On the positive side though, Privateer Press really do the right thing here. Their game needs to be advertised and this is a good way to do it. Also, do remember that this is their first videogame. It can only get better after this, after all I do seem to recall a number of rather awful games based on WHFB and 40k when they started appearing on the telly and PC-screen.
The bulk of this trailer is target renders and/or cinematics, with the rest being old gameplay footage they’ve been showing since 2009. There is no way to tell how the game plays based on this footage. I think it’s a bit early to start calling this a Duke Nukem level failure, your argument from authority notwithstanding.
What was wrong with duke nukem? it has never been a crazy good game the thing that made duke nukem are the one liners and there are many in forever i dont know what ppl were expecting but i atleast got what i paid for ^^
I think he was using the poor review scores that Duke has received as a low point, with this game apparently being on that level of critical failure.
Quite right there preatormarius. Of course I may have been exaggerating a tad bit as well. Also, I didn’t know that this was old gameplay footage, which does show that this game has gone under my radar for some time, though it just might be because I discovered Warmachine about a year ago, a far shorter time than I have been dealing with videogames.
This was announced at Gencon ’09 but then kinda dropped off the radar. I think it’s quite a small studio developing it though so it looks like they have just been extremely busy cranking out a nice looking game. Looks like it’s going the SpaceMarine route of hack’n’slash but hopefully there will be some kind of squad orders to control jacks too. Looked like battle boxes verus each other and winter guard ( eg cannon fodder). It’s getting preordered instantly anyway. Loving how Mini gaming IP’s are hot for video gaming now, wasn’t always this way. I remember reading a preview of Apsect Warrior for the megadrive in Mean Machines Sega about 18yrs ago and being soooo excited and then totally gutted when it never saw the light of day.
reminds me of dungeon seige / sacred 2 fallen angel, its the kind of game i would definatle play
where do i pre-order?
yea does any one know when it is coming out ? i would love to pre-order it .but cant find it on any of my normal gaming web sites ? need to get this …
I really hope they make a collectors edition for it im a sucker for those ^^
holy crap this looks sweet. I have never played warmachine (Yet) but this looks great. the game may be hack and slash but it looks like it may have some party mechanics ala dragon age. But i am worried about the possiable number of quicktime events i may have seen in the trailer.
Besides who would not want to hach and slash an opponent with a massive hammer, a sword covered in lightning or a steam and magic powered bipedal tank. Striker just looks an awsome character to play as
could be good but they need to improve there combat system, all the kills looked….well…poor. whenever someone died it didn’t look realistic, the graphics dont look too bad but they need to invest more time in the combat system. looks like
*looks like GW might have the wargame-videogame market aswell
I hope the controlls wont be hmm whats the word… clunky? (is that even a word lol?)
I’d rather this were some kind of fast paced squad strategy than the straight-to-console action game it appears to be.. but something tells me its going to be a fun game regardless and one I will pick up if only because of the IP. But what’s with Striker’s goggles? The rest of the trailer has a nice, consistent look but those goggles look like an untextured Poser prop!
😀 Ive just had a full blown geek-gasm after seeing this!!
Stryker has a real good look with that sword with the blue glow.
Well this is unexpected. I think it looks great 🙂
I’ve yet to start playing Warmachine (waiting for the 2 player box) but I think anything which helps visualise it helps potential new players, as well as attract more people to the models/war gaming in general. I’m not expecting the game to be outstanding but if it looks good then that’s enough for me to rent it at least.
It looks like you play the Warcaster as a main and then can switch to Warjacks etc…I’m curious as to how the mechanics work/translate, hopefully the multi-player will be good. I’ll keep an eye on it – thanks 🙂
I think it would be fine if it was a hack and slash game. I love playing The tabletop version, and I love all of the intricacies of the combat, but to make the VG strategic and methodical would be a mistake. If I’m playing a VG version of WM, I want lots of action, story and WM IP flavor. If I want strategy and precision, I’ll play the tabletop. Make a VG appealing to the wargamers with the IP and make the wargame appealing to the videogamers with the action (and hopefully a compelling story).
Me wants HORDES
Forget Space Marine my ass. This looks mighty Lame.
The gencon footage i saw was awful, this is a major improvement- it looked good to me. I hope they can get it even better before release.
Space Marine may be a bit slicker but it will be interesting to see how these two sell vs each other. Id be happy with both, id prefer to support this game if i only had one. I feel a try before i buy coming on
I just listened to the soundtrack…oh dear. Vid would be 300% better with a different audio track imo
All kinds of awesome!!!
That looks terrible. I think they are sensible trying to get their IP out there, but this is a bad way to do it. I’d rather have something more like Starcraft but without having to wait a decade. I don’t like that bit where the two casters(?) are walking toward each other, I understand what they are trying to do but it comes off more Zoolander than Reservoir Dogs. I like the skirmish scale of WarmaHordes. The size of game makes it a good companion to longer term Warhammer armies but I find it hard to imagine how the armies interact in a way that is cool and exiting.
I’ve heard a couple of people say they would like this to be a rts like starcraft game but I don’t think it would work at all within the story and mythos of the world. Warcasters can’t requisition new warjacks and troops in the middle of battle, and the leader is so important that it would almost be like dota right away.
I for one am very pleased with the style of game they chose for this. It seems very battlegroup vs. battlegroup with a few infantry speedbumps thrown in.
I wonder what kind of game this is. It would been great if it had been turn based strategy game.
this looks great glad they didnt go for a rts root that would be lame. just hope this is not goin to turn out like firewarriors or somthing.
I was there when they showed it (both times… sad trombone;)), and I’d say 90% of the reaction was exceptional. I HATE video games, never play them… but I’d let Warmachine pop my cherry! As well, I was really digging the dubstep, but was hoping for some bombastic orchestral/metal parts mixed in… guess I’ll have to get to work on more music to submit, eh?
The most vocal critic in our group there was saying that 1) The textures looked a bit flat, could be improved, and 2) the “button mashing”(?) didn’t do it for him. We both liked the way that focus was allocated, but he was wanting some wider-angled strategy/puzzle components.
I’m just easy to please, I guess.
AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The music is totally not there. Listening to that I’d imagine a generic free MMORPG trailer running in the background (come to think of it, the trailer itself looks a bit like it too – but I understand it’s more or less just a mash-up of short clips made so far). Hope something heavier and more cinematic will be in the finished product, music-wise.
I don’t play WM, but I know enough about the game that I hope at least some of the interaction between the “models” will translate into this.
Meh never really been a fan of hack and slash games they get so repetitive really quickly….. but since it is from one of my favourite wargaming companies I will have to support them in this!!!
I think it looks like a decent hack and slash. I am a bit sad that it not a turn based strat game since that would represent the game better. I think this would be an Iron Kingdom game. As far as forgetting the space marine game… I just can’t see why people think it is one or the other. these games usually only give 10- 20 hours of game play. That is short enough that people will want both. Just my 2 cents.
You know what would be cool? If they put advertising for the TTG in the package or on the disc. That’s a great idea. I wonder if any company ever thought of that before, then gradually did less and less of it?
(Seriously…PDF some rules and throw ’em on the disc. Lots of pictures. A few PDF’s of No Quarter too.) Cost almost nothing and might get a little attention.
NICE x)
I think this looks great if they get the mecanics for controlling the warjacks to work properly, and Warmachine wouldent work that good as a turnbased game, seeing as the table top game has heavy action elements, just think of all the jack wreseling you can get up to, those kind of elements transfer badly to turn based games. I just hope to god that there are no quick time events, i hate those things… Also i hope you can choose who to play.
Those animations were smooth as! I really liked it. And correct me if I am wrong but was that a non rendered cut scene? That means they use the same engine for ‘movies’ as they do for the game, ohhh that is super fly.
And I have to disagree with you Andy I think that the action adventure style suits it quite well, plus the stories of the game focus on the caster so simply focusing on the caster seems like a great idea,
One thing is for sure I have a new game on my to buy list, 2012 well for the ‘end of the world’ it sure is jam packed with action mass effect 3. warmachine and did you catch that smile the Cygnar dude did when he saw the chick epic.
And the music had me so pumped with this video esp. the end, faith, nation, power bit.
SO PUMPED!
im thinking its going to be a dynasty/samurai warriors/gundam type game. but it looks very polished for such a genre. count me in! theres even dubstep!
Come to think of it; if a player could change the perspective and control between models in the warband at will, so as to improve their aiming, positioning and such, that would simulate the spending of focus the way I understand it quite well; the caster can’t be everywhere at once. So imagine the Destroyer in your group is shooting autonomously with some randomization of its shots, but you can “shift” to play it and improve (or not 🙂 ) its shooting, “leaving” your Sorcha for a moment controlled by the AI in a more or less defensive mode.
I’m really interested how the final game works.
Needs Dip, If this is a full retail game i from what the trailer shows it would be a rip off, if it was a arcade game you can download, it would be a good game in that respect.
The Graphics do not look pretty at all, the human facial characteristics look nasty, the game play looks slugglish.
i haven’t really ever been in to warmachine, i like the figs and all but its not for me. anyway this game doesn’t look to change my mind at all, the graphics are poor, especially when compared to the likes of Battlefield 3 or Skyrim and the game play looks repetitive and, unless it has a strong multiplayer /co op, it doesn’t look as if it has much replay value.
obviously i am being very critical of a small amount of old game play, one thing i did like was the music, and i have been a huge fan of dubstep even before its recent rise in popularity, and i did like how it was used on this type of game trailer. i mean no offence but this sort of trailer has very bad heavy metal etc. and even though i would have chosen a different track it was still nice to hear it being used. i really hope for the full game the soundtrack is more along the lines of the recent collaboration between Nero and the BBC orchestra, in other words a mix of dubstep and strings, witch makes for very epic songs!
I just hope they will make it so that you can switch out with different types of jacks
I’d definitely rent it, and maybe buy it if I like it enough. I’m probably in that same boat for Space Marine, as well. I hope they both come out soon. I haven’t bought a videogame in a long time.
BoW Adam
It’s like those youtube videos “X does Y while I play unfitting music”.
Going to be totally honest here and just say that this game looks quite bad.
Kind of reminds me of one of those game you pick up at Gamestation for a tenner when you feel like you need something new to play and never really get around to completing it…..
what are the protectorate jacks supposed to be?
also again edit button needed. i like the looks of the game. the arcade look sorta suits the game if you ask me. now i could see having a game like this as a first off then expanding into a portable rts like Squad Command or even a full rts for consoles and pcs
Certainly transfers to the video-game world very well by the looks of it, also they score points for using some phat dubstep tuneage in that trailer! that russian looking warcaster woman even fills in the niche of having a hot-slav lady. And that’s the most important thing.
The game seems to be done on a shoestring budget with a relative unknown developer, and naturally my hopes on the visuals were not high. It looks about appropriate for an early 360 or late X-Box game. But visuals to not make a game, they polish it.
It was awesome to see Striker a Sorscha come to life, and the warjacks move how you expect them to move. The setting in Llael means that you’re going to get to fight important battle in the iron kingdom, and the destroyed town is heavily modeled after the artwork in the lore.
I had expected a hack & slash game, and it’s really the only sure way that a game could be done in Iron Kingdoms (with the possible exception of a MechCommander style interface) due to the nature of their warfare (wouldn’t it be cool to play Alistair Caine in a FPS?) . I am concerned with the lack of fluidity i was noting in striker. It means that the game is going to start feeling repetitive pretty quickly unless the environments vary up more than we were seeing in the trailer.
Still, it felt more like a proof of concept than an actual polished trailer, so we’ll see where the game development leads. It certainly doesn’t have a high hurdle to leap over to beat games like Fire Warrior.
I think its great that this game is going to the action/arcade style. I think this will drawl new comers into the actual game because they now have something to base their imaginations on when they actually play the game on the table top. This game with all its flashy special effects and fight scenes will breath life into the actual table top game. DOW has done that for me in terms of 40k, This will complement the missing piece of the Table top game Warmachine. Actual action. I can’t wait till the day when we can combine action and tabletop gaming. Like a 3D holo board. imagine playing on something like that!
Seems Hack n Slash to me, i like that.
This looks boring… we’ll got the 1000000th braindead hack’n slash video game pushed in the coat of the Warmachine genre… not my cup of tea..
My hard earned money is waiting for Space Marine, not this…
The graphical transfer of Warmachine to computer game looks great. But it seems like the game would be some stupid console clickfest.
Nice graphics/animation but not into arcade games. Would get it if it was action/strategy and if they made it for Mac. Should sell well though to the arcaders.
new pants required
The choice to go for a hack and slash is an obvious one if not disappointing, real time strategy and its turn based brother as genres have been through hard times in recent years through a combination of the death of the PC market, and (as some have already pointed out) the rise of console and the difficult translation of strategy to that medium. The problem here is that this game is already in serious danger of fading in to obscurity, to do well you need to not only have a unique setting for your hack and slash but it needs to be outstanding in every regard or it will just be relegated to bargain bin with all the other god of war clones. Unfortunately nothing about this promo video Is that outstanding, It’s clear that a lot of it if FMV and by modern FMV standards its not that great, also the motion capture of the jack’s looks more human than that of stryker. I’d like to be able to get excited about this but it looks lackluster at best, and pretty last gen at worst.
Is this gonna be on the x box?
xbox, ps3 and pc
if they can polish it a bit more this actually could be a great way to spread the ip, just hope soundtrack is epic not meh.
Picking 3 key game platforms is win
Great cinema beginning, Cryx gal kind of hot if you are in to that. Warmachine seems to be a very good table top game, but in a video game there are questions. Of course GWS has the upper hand on quality of products, but I feel a change in the breeze. This videogame may be the gateway that privateer press needs to heighten their populatity. I for one, and I believe their are many more of you out there, wish Privateer all the good fortune to bust through like a Heavy Warjack the wall of this market as well.
Honestly, this looks great and all, but I had the idea of it being like Dawn of War II with a strategy aspect, not a third-person ‘squad’ based hack and slash.
In my personal opinion, Space Marine. Nothing like a Gears of War rip in the 40k universe!
I do like the look of Kommander Sorscha however hehe. *Click*
this is awesome i only started war machine like a week ago
Well I think this could be a really nice translation from the IP.
I think that making it a pure breed strategy or RTS title would basicly just translate the Boardgame.
As they developers are saying it will be action/strategy. I hope that translates into a Gears of War kind of game, that would serve the game rather well.
Awesome trailer, I’m optimistic the game will be fun.
Oh god! Finally a Warmachine game, however this looks like a arcade game like Firefight. The problem is Relic is releasing a very good looking game with true things to the universe of 40k and mixed over the top things to make it look good. This just looks bad cause it’s just hack-slash over and over again! Hope they have a campaign with a good story and excellent action like Space Marine
