The Khador Battlegroup Box Set
December 31, 2012 by lloyd
Warren and BoW Andy (beerogre) kick off what's going to be a regular and massive amount of coverage on Warmachine. To start we're gonna be looking over the latest starter sets (Battlegroups) and having a chat about what's in them and how they can be used in battle.
These 'unboxings' are gonna be slightly longer than normal as we want to chat about the units fron a tactical perspective as well.
Other than that grab your friends and get into the Warmachine Groups and help us go to town on this awesome game.

Great video, I liked how it went deeper than just pointing out the parts of the models and got into what you are really getting out of the box in a gameplay perspective too.
Just a heads up, the axes on your jacks are reversed. It shouldn’t cause any real confusion in gameplay as the jacks are really defined as which one has the bombard.
Brilliant unboxing guys. I’ve got to agree with Dais, I love that you guys didn’t just pull the models out and say, “the box has this, this and this.” I can’t wait to see more.
Cheers lads… we thought that Warmachine deserved a little bit of extra TLC as we’ve been neglecting it for so long. The rest of the WM unboxings are going to be done in a similar vein.
We’ll try to get the starter boxes done first, then move on to some of the other shinys… including some blisters! DUN-DUN-DUUUUN!!! 😉
As for the axes… I only noticed it after I had the ‘jacks stuck together… and I would have gotten away with it too, if hadn’t been for you meddling kids!
BoW Andy
nice
Love these models, loves these Videos.
Good to see more WM attention. Now you just need to keep the momentum up! Oh, and start looking at the stuff for Hordes as well.
I think you need to stress the point that the forces books are completely optional in this game. While they do contain some decent fluff and artwork…game wise they have nothing (other than the tier lists for each Warcaster) that you need to play. That said, Privateer’s books are some of the nicest productions in wargaming. If you do buy a book, get the hardcover…they are so much nicer and don’t fall apart like GW books.
Sorry beerogre, I have to totally disagree with you on Tempest. While it does soak up a LOT of focus, it is also one of the most devastating spells in the game. While you seem to rave about Sorscha’s feat, you are also neglecting the fact that it needs LOS to work…so it can be easily defeated by using intervening models to block LOS. In a battle box game you don’t have a lot to work with, but even at 25-35pts it is rather easy to hide a single small based model. Tempest gets around this by KNOCKING DOWN models and as a result they are no longer block LOS. Add to that if you also hit them with Icy Gaze they the opponents Warcaster and Warjacks need to spend two focus each to shake effects (one each for both stationary and knock down). POW12 to all models under the template (no half POW for blast damage) is also quite good at simply wiping out infantry.
I don’t like when people bang on about Khador having a ‘icy’ or ‘cold’ theme. While it was Privateer’s intention for this to be the case, it is one that has been sadly neglected. Outside of Sorscha (and her epic version) the Juggernaut (and Beast 09), a Greylord Ternion (you can add the Koldun Lord and the Doom Reaver Escort to that as well) and Zerkova…there is no ice theme. Compared to the other factions which all have 2-3 times as many models that present their ‘theme’ Cygnar (disruption and electrical attacks), Menoth (fire based attacks and anti-magic), Cryx (corrosion, undead, benefiting from the death of living models) the only theme that Khador truly has to itself is the lack of arc nodes and that their Warjacks all have nearly the same stat line.
With the RNG on Tempest I can normally guarantee that I have a heavy within charge range of a target when Tempest is also within range. Should I blow 4 FOC on Tempest (which also requires LoS in order to hit a target) or use Icy Gaze and 3 FOC on charging a Warjack to take down a target?
As for the POW:12 damage, you could spend 1 FOC on a boosted Bombard shot from a Destroyer that gets a POW:14 on a hit and POW:7 vs. everything else under the template.
I only start to use Tempest when Icy Gaze has failed, there are so many of my opponents that take a counter to being knocked down that the effect is often worthless. If I’m playing Khador and I want rid of intervening models, I take a model like Taryn Di La Rovissi… a quick Shadow Fire shot and no more intervening models.
So it’s a case of “horses for courses”… if you get some mileage out of Tempest, then good for you… I don’t and find it’s too much of an investment. In fact I don’t rate Kommander Sorscha much at all, I would take Forward Kommander Sorscha (with Beast-09 and some Winterguard) if I was to have any version.

As these jacks are part resin…do they need to be treated like resin models before glueing and painting?
They’re a form of dense plastic-resin mix. They don’t react to “ordinary” pastic cement and you need to use a superglue on them.
However, you don’t need to use a conditioner or any of that stuff on them and they seem to come ready cleaned, so there’s no need to wash them… although it doesn’t hurt to give them another quick rub.
About time, Warmachine finally gets some lovin’!!!! I finally have a reason to tune into beasts of war again. Now all you have to do is to get “on the table” up and running and you guy are back on top!
Great video guys! I’m just getting into Warmachine and am looking forward to other videos you’ll be doing. Keep up the good work.
I am very excited to see some Warmachine coverage. Excellent video, I hope to see more Warmachine throughout your vids such as terrain and tactics.
Good video guys. I love the production value you bring to war gaming. I’ve been following your YouTube uploads for a while and decided to join the community to check it out and point something out from the video; the top-loader hard cases are brilliant, but to get around the problem of cards sliding around my shop suggests using the ultra cheap clear card slips as well. They come in packs of 100 for around $1-2, and once you bulk the card up just that little bit extra in thickness, they don’t slide around too much in the top loaders, but you can still get them back out if you ever have a reason to. Hope it helps and looking forward to seeing more videos.
That’s a great idea… I think I have some of those knocking around somewhere… we might get that in the next video and give you a name check.

I started of Khador myself. I own Kommandant Irusk, a Spriggan and a Unit of Winter Guard. Honestly I never went for the Synergy between units, I went for the looks. The Commissar feel for Irusk, along with the Winter Guard and Spriggan work great. I’ve played a few 10 point games vs Trollbloods and Cryx. Game ended as a draw with the Trollbloods and squashed Skarre and her silly Satyxis into a pulp in the other game.
very cool man you may want to add a mortar team or two to use with his fire for effect
Not unless it’s the Supreme Kommandant version of Irusk, he’s the one with Fire for Effect and the ability to make his troops Tough.
With the Kommandant Irusk version, you want to take some heavy hitting infantry like Man-O-War or Manhunters so that you can drop Battle Lust on them… however the Spriggan is a great target for Superiority.
Very well done. Awesome first vid for you Andy you did really well mate!
Thanks John… mind you… for the next load of vids I’m flying solo!
Expect them to be a bit rough, until I find my feet guys. 😉
Excellent video – always been a diehard GW player but I feel the need for a couple of WM starter boxes for Xmas 😀
Beerogre fits right in with the rest of the Bow guys. Look forward to more Warmachine Videos…on a lighter note, my Canadian ear heard “I see gays” when Warren was describing the sorceresses feat. Man, for a second I thought it was “how to roll like an Ultramarine” all over again.
Those resin models look very nice. I remember the pain in which you had to go through to pose the metal models years back. This is a nice change to the product line. Very nice Video on getting interest into WarMachine.
Great to see more vids on new games. Good work Andy. Keep up the good work, guys.
Who is the new guy!! I don’t like this, I fear change.
The new guy seems like the sort of dude to use a line of gun mages and just sit back takin pot shots at you or the old menoth kreoss/paladin shield wall trick!!
Explain yourself new dude!
Whereas you sound like a dude who would run their Warpwolves straight down the barrel of of a Cygnar gun line… or forget to take any magical weapons against some Paladins of the Wall… that’s gotta hurt! 😉
I need to stop watching these vids, i want to start warmachine now.
Yeah. I’ve got 40K and a Fantasy WIP, now I want to start FoW, Warmachine and LotR as well!
Nice video. Now I want to play Warmachine as well. Looking forward to seeing more Warmachine unboxing 🙂
Can you use an Epoxy adhesive on resin?
Yeah, it should work. Just as long as you don’t use the type of plastic cement you would use for GW-type plastics.
For the best results use a superglue with an accellerator… it takes all the effort out of it.
Just make sure you have the model posed the way you want it before you accellerate.
oO WM got plastic Warjacks 😀
ahh finally, always wanted some of them just for the fact what they are,
f*cking huge-ass robots build to rain down death and destruction upon your enemies^^
and to be honest they would make some pretty damn cool cybots for my Space Marines
does anybody know if finally Hordes too, got plastic minis?
I’ve beeen looking at starting Warmachine for awhile, and all of these videos are great; the back of the box may tell me I get Kommander Sorscha Kratikoff, a Juggernaut and a Destroyer but what are these things? Are they any good? What do they do in the game? This video, and the others on the other Starter Boxes, answer all these questions. I was particularly pleased that you gave the starter rules a thumbs up, as some games, like MTG, have tried such things in the past and have, in my eyes, not been done very well, so thanks for being a bit more comprehensive.
i like how the juggernaut looks like it is shaking its fist at someone. and i have found sleeves that fit the cards. it is a soft plastic sleeve that you can order in a variety of sizes i will try to find a link for you guys.
Great job guys. Keep reuploading these.
Uh-oh – it’s like some crazy time warp!
Really nice video, love the new resin models for Khador! The look much better being bigger! I really want to start Warmachine with Khador. I would like a hard hitting army with tough armour, any suggestions anyone?
As rule of the thump from my personal view:
Boost attack roll, if you weapon has critical effect on it and the enemy model is a) worth it and b) suffers from the effect. E.g. Critical Amputation only works against ‘jacks, Critical Freeze isn’t worth boosting against low-DEF meat shields,…
And on the other hand I mostly buy another attack instead of boosting a damage roll. It’s just a mathematical question (so a question how high the enemies ARM is, compared to the damage of my weapon) rather to boost the damage roll than buying another attack…
Perfect video for beginning Khador generals… like myself!
