Happy Sund… Heyyyy! Happy Boxing Day then!
A Christmas of boardgame gold! Twilight Struggle fully deserves its #1 ranking on BGG. It is a magnificent game. Don’t be intimidated by the rules. Whilst they’re complex in comparison to Ticket to Ride, they’re simple in comparison to a wargame. There’s a basic engine that drives the game of taking turns playing a card and either resolving the event on it* or spending the points value it has doing one of four things on the board. The turn sequence is printed on the board and the reference sheet has most of what you need to know. I’m jealous of you, @warzan, that you’re getting to play this for the first time.
I love both TtR and Pandemic, and got Pandemic Legacy for Christmas which I’m itching to get played. Whilst y’all have been avoiding Star Wars spoilers, I’ve been avoiding Pandemic Legacy spoilers.
*One of the key features of the game is the events on the cards can be specific to the US or the USSR, and if you have a card with an event specific to your opponent then you can only play it for the points, but your opponent also gets the benefit of the event.
I would love to play Twilight Struggle, but I don’t know anyone who’d play it with me if I tracked it down and bought it. I love the other games too though. I’ve introduced so many people to Ticket to Ride, and I think everyone has gone out and bought it for themselves. And Pandemic is probably a joint family favourite. Will be playing it later today! I’m mightily tempted by Legacy but again, not sure I can get a group of people together regularly enough to play it through.
Thanks for doing all your boardgame coverage this year, the BoW team in general and @redben in particular!
It’s currently in print. My LGS has a copy on their shelves and it’s on Amazon too.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Twilight-Struggle-Cold-1945-1989-Board/dp/B0060L6EE4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451144663&sr=8-1&keywords=twilight+struggle+deluxe
Everyone I’ve introduced to the game has loved it.
Did someone say 28mm Romans?
Yes, but what period?! Tell us Lloyd!
But really… What have the Romans ever done for us?!?
28mm… pah!
While I agree with sentiment Rob. I was going to be nice and not say anything as its Christmas 🙂
apart from……
*eh* …

Aquaducts
I’ve already shown off my Christmas goodies over in the Green Room, but seeing as how you asked, I also had a very boardgame Christmas. I got Pandemic Legacy, Blood Rage, 7 Wonders, A Study in Emerald, and The Marcy Case expansion for T.I.M.E. Stories. I’m also not much of a resolutions guy, though in common with many other wargamers I’d like to get more painted. Maybe I’ll get my own 28mm Roman army finished. Currently I’ve got eight models for it painted.
Right – get out of the car everyone, we’ll head off to Granny’s later! Why? … just something I gotta do… of COURSE it’s important!
Ticket to Ride 10th Anniversary Edition is all well and good, but isn;t compatible with the board expansions. I’m not sure about the card expansions either as they have different backs and may be a different size.
If planning to collect several of the range start with the basic USA or Europe set.
Lol! Poor granny!
I’m glad to see Justin managed to take my whole Kwak! You truly are one of the Flegms now! 😀
The way he got over his initial trepidation, grasped that Kwak put it to his lips and took the whole thing (bar the little dribble at the end) … Was an inspiration to us all!
It’s a bit like a metaphor for life really, to get a head you must grasp the Kwak with both hands!
All hail Justin, Gullible Grasper, Transpiring Taker, Defiant Drinker, the True King of the Kwaks!
Haha, glad you guys enjoyed it! 😀
Poor @dignity – did you see his eyes when he saw the size of that Kwak….yet he still took it like a champ.
In fact, looking at how expertly he cupped the Kwak with both hands I would bet money that it wasn’t his first 😀
He may not have drained the ball but he took the shaft all in one go…
But did he spit?
That puts me in mind of spotswood’s speech in team america to garry, the one about both passing through the eye of the needle…
On Ben’s sage advice I bought my eldest the love letters card game (adventure time edition) and we spent Christmas evening playing it instead of watching a shed load of repeats on the TV. Even though my missus glazed over during the explanation of the rules, she quickly got the hang of it and we all had a good laugh screwing each other over just as we each thought we had a winning hand!
We also got space cadets and George and I are going to read through that today.
Resolution wise: I’m going to try and get in touch with a gaming club in York to get more gaming in, as the recent TY boot camp really whetted my appetite to get back into that side of the hobby. Also I will get all of my space marines built and base coated by year end, I think I have @150 + and 8 vehicles plus a raptor to build so certainly a challenge.
This was a missed opportunity for an on screen jammy dance. Just saying.
I got a repair manual for my MINI, which will come in handy if I ever engage in melee combat and need a bludgeoning weapon. I don’t have a resolution, because I know better.
The Belgians make some of nicest beers I have ever drunk
…Ben… try “Paint more models than I buy”
Nothing game related but some cash so I can pick what I need
@lloyd. Which Roman period are you going for?
My resolutions:
1. Drink more beer
2. Lose weight
3. Paint all my infinity Morat minis
Happy Boxing Day!
I was lucky enough to get Betrayal at Calth from my gorgeous wife.
Now to paint them☺
Nice bonus episode to round off a great year for BoW.
Lloyd good choice with 28 mm Romans lots of nice plastic boxes available. Can use for Kingdoms of men in Kings of War not just historically
Justin – beyond the call of duty to down a refreshing 8.4% breakfast ale.
Resolutions
Learn two new rules systems eg black powder and kings of war, or Frostgrve. Happy to join Warren and loose 3stone myself – if he is serious
Warren, if you are interested in doing more skirmish games why not try Guy Bower’s Black Op’s from Osprey or In Her Majesty’s Name?
Both games cost about £12, need only a handful of figures, and have large followings.
As a resident of Belguim and a ‘Flem’, I can tell you beastians that the beer called Kwak is a beer served during the times of horse and carriage. You see roads where not flat and a normal beer glass would make a thirsty passenger in the carriage wet during the journey. All spills over him but not a single drop in his mouth 🙂
Another candidate for the skirmish game is Bushido
but seeing as how Warren likes ‘big’ armies and Orks he’s probably better off with Malifaux’s Gremlins – they’re green and there’s loads of them
Happy Boxing Day everyone
Hilarious show! I can’t wait to see the Nacht Wulf with dinosaurs. Khurasan have some great looking 15mm Dinos if you are interested.
Happy New Year! Just in case I’m not here to wish you so!
Best regards,
NR
Hope everyone had a great Christmas!
Hobby related presents this year were some nice brushes from Rosemary and Co, and a Legions of Everblight Archangel to use them on. Not a hordes player at all; but it’s a beautiful model I’ve been wanting since it first appeared.
New years resolution this year for gaming – Step out of my comfort zone a bit. I’ve been playing wargames with the same group of people since 1992, I moved house not too long ago which means I’m quite a way from all those friends and my gaming time is restricted as result. So my resolution is to finish up my Pano and give the tournament scene a visit to get more gaming in.
If I can take a suggestion Warran.. Malifaux is honestly one of the best games I feel i have ever played, the aesthetic is amazing.
My resolutions is to finish painting my Journey: Wrath of Demons
Ok nude beer revolutions, hic!
So this is what it comes down to. I shall choose only three serious ones and possibly a couple that will be extra hard to keep but I shall do my best.
1, Warzan I am with you on the weight loss kicking 3 stones by May is definitely doable I must also go to the gym twice a week for some better muscle build.
2, On the painting side, Collect and paint a union army in 28mm for our ACW games (this may be a perry starter set painted up in union colours from Vapnatrak.), the war of the cousins (roses) 12 mm, Finish my WW1 British 28 mm.
3, Get rid of anything I will not play in the next three years. (May sound strange but I have a lot of stuff to complete that I want to complete and a lot of stuff wargaming and model wise that will be sorted, so a long term goal of 3 years when I have been playing over 50 years is a not unreasonable target.
4, I want to celebrate over 50 yrs. of wargaming this July the weekend of the 10th amongst like minded gamers in some form or another, this will be a practice run for four years hence when I shall be having no matter where I am living one mother of all wargaming combined ‘ceilidh’ (look it up guys and girls) and everyone I mean everyone and their better halves will be made welcome.
After all I think 50 yrs. of proper wargaming is worth the attention. I am starting to plan it out in my noggin now so any ideas would be more than welcome peeps and peepess’s.
Happy Christmas guys a great start to boxing day. on the subject of presents for years i tried to get the wife to get me gaming related stuff and failed miserably, Now we are divorced she got me Warmachine / Hordes stuff i needed for my Gatormen army WTF ????
so as well as a nice suprise i am a little perplexed, even the dog looked at me funny…
The intention was to paint the whole of the Dungeon Saga Kickstarter which is pretty big but as Lloyd says I have a year to do it. There has, however, been a re-prioritisation of things based on what adds the most value. So I plan to paint the rest of my Space Hulk box (which is most of the Genestealers and 5 terminators) before moving onto Dungeon Saga. Conan is likely to end up being my 2017 pledge now.
However I WILL paint the whole of the Dungeon Saga DM pledge in 2016
I might need to clarify something here as well. When I said the entire Dungeon Saga Pledge, although we did back it up to the hilt and bought all the expansions too, I wasn’t including the expansions in that. I want to paint the DM Pledge (so heroes, monsters and furniture) so that before 2016 is done I will play a Dungeon Saga game with fully painted miniatures.
This is awesome! I just got Twilight Struggle for Christmas yesterday. Hope everyone had a great Christmas. 🙂
James hope you are having a good family festive season, thanks for the help this year and wishing you and yours a great 2016.
best wishes, Phil and Buddy (thats the dog)
GMT make some great game
Down in flames us probably one of the best WW2 air games I have played
Thanks, guys. Hope you and yours had a great Christmas. 😀
I wasn’t kidding about Twilight Struggle. Warren and I got the same edition, of the same relatively-hard-to-find game, on the same day. I actually asked my girlfriend @gladesrunner . . . “were you and Andrea talking back during the Team Yankee boot camp?” 😀 😀 😀

I’ve had TS for about 6 months and it looks like I might soon be getting a game with an experienced player. Really looking forward to it. TS coverage (and boardgames in general) on BoW would be great.
Resolutions – Nearly forgot
1. pull my finger out and get painting as everything is based and primed white, that means 100 points plus of cygnar
50 points plus of Gatormen
2 x firestorm armada fleets
2 large wild west exodus armies, enlightened and warrior nation
5 blood bowl teams
50 + 28mm french line infantry
1500 points bolt action americans
a lot of battletech
every box of zombicide so far with all the kickstarter extras
Plus before i forget the two player kickstarter pledge for wild west exodus confederate and dark nation and the remaining zombicide black plague kickstarter stuff yet to be delivered..
on a plus side ive an iron back spitter, boneswarm and bull snappper already part painted so no pressure then
Er… What are you doing posting here? I don’t think you have time for this – you’d better get started on your 2016 resolution right now!
Happy new year to all
I did get a load of infinity stuff but no board games
I got an MDF Millennium Falcon kit! Here is a link showing the kit being built.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hSxZOG7hIE
@warzan and @oriskany There is a vassal engine module for Twilight Struggle
My dad and brothers have gone to the pub to watch football. My mum and my brother’s girlfriend are watching Strictly Come Dancing. Thank God for the Boxing Day XLBS!
Happy Christmas and New Year everyone!
Happy Boxing Day folks
@dignity you know that Belgian beer is a lot like French beer, it’s just got some phelgm in it!
@lloyd glad to see the romans coming matey, You know you could use them for Kings of War as a Kingdom of Men army list, if you fancy giving it a try I’ll bring some down for you to have a blatter with, also should be able to fit them into Hail Caesar as well. or WA
@warzan: when you got Justin to hold up the Twilight Struggle board for you to point things out on it, was that your attempt at an audition to be the new BBC weather man? ;P
On Xmas presents: only hobby related thing I got this year was some superglue. Next year I’ll be turning the garden shed into a hobby/gaming room/man cave, so had some stuff to decorate that (ornamental dragon wall light, dragon coasters, dragon bookends…hmm, I sense a theme emerging :s) and an electric pen.
On New Years resolutions: I also need to lose weight, although 3 stone in such a short time period is probably too much for me so I won’t be swiping @warzan‘s resolution :p. Another one will be to paint more minis – had major surgery on my spine at the start of this year and my hobby time has suffered as a consequence, so really need to get back into the swing of things; priority is Battlefleet Gothic and Dungeon Saga (kickstarter pledge, Orc expansion, abyssal expansion and dragon expansion)…so that’s target of finish painting by…3017 – that sound reasonable? ;p
Above and beyond the call of duty. Well done boys and Merry Christmas!
I want to get some of my own miniatures cast, even if it’s just enough for personal use. Been sculpting for years and have no army to show for it so it would love to have a couple of small armies to paint up and playtest with at the very least.
I got a microwave! Not sure how that helps build my Space Marines though… ?
@ torros: did you ever try german beer? It’s the best beer.
I got Zombicide: Angry Neighbors. Nearly had all survivors and half the zombies painted until then… but what can a man do? Other than that my girlfriend gave me a sheet of cosplayflex. .. now I have no more excuses not to go to comic con next year dressed as red hood…. 😀
I have tried beer from many and varied places. My favourite is Hoegaarden
For a resolution i think i have to paint so many minis that i should start doing so. And of course play more games. And I have to play twilight imperium at least once. Got it about a year ago and never played it.
Play Bushido, Warren!
Seriously, it’s amazing. It’s an Oriental fantasy skirmish game, similar in scale to
It’s easy to play, but hugely tactical and the models are absolutely stunning.
* Similar in scale to Malifaux.
Warren you need to check out Pandemic legacy!
Happy Christmas one and all, seeing those board games I would for you to do more play through of board games. I know other sites do it but not with your sense on fun and humour. I for one got Dungeon Saga for crimbo and look forward to helping my kids take their first steps into dungeon crawling.
Cheers for the show guys. After getting my ass kicked for the day (I work in a hotel so no Stephen’s day break) I was in dire need of a laugh.
I was pretty pleased with my haul this year, I got Zombicide The Black Plague, Forbidden Stars and two gangs for the Batman Miniatures Game. And a compressor for an airbrush.
As for resolutions; while I always set myself a (reasonable) painting target for getting stuff done, this year I want to make an extra effort to learn new painting styles and techniques. I’ve always stuck with the GW method and while I’ve been happy with the results, I’m trying out some new games and I want the minis to have a different look to them.
Step one of this is to start experimenting with airbrushing but I’ll also be studying Angel Giraldez’ Painting Masterclass and I’d like to pick up the Painting Buddha DVD set that was released alongside the Infamy KS.
I have been waiting for twighlight struggle for AGES i mearly bought it a few times but got pipped to the post. Cant wait to play it
Great little show guy`s, did`t get a chance to watch it this morning….just finished watching it now, hope Justin`s ok after his run in with the booze.
Think i`ll be looking in to the game Twilight Struggle, never really been a big fan of those type of game`s, but Twilight Struggle has my interest so will look at seeing if one of my lot will get it for me for “Fathers Day”.
Happy Boxing Day Guy`s, and here`s to a great new year`s releases and gaming.
Justin not numbered amongst those of us that love the Kwak.
Also Merry Xmas & Happy New Year to all BoWers
yo ho ho and a bottle of kwak.
I’m pretty sure that’s the traditional response to that.
It is now!
Ironically my best presents came on Boxing day, our store had a event and you had this auction system based ticks from what you bought, I bought a mystery box and it had Island of blood and Skaven bell and and 3 books, half a dozen white dwarfs and two visions I was pretty stoked.
thanks for the show guys!
Happy Yule!! Great show 🙂 My husband got me a new knife! It is a hand forged replica of an Ancient Celtic Knife found in Bohemia…..It is amazing! Love it! We were still in our jammies watching the show so we fit right in. We had two games of Empire of the Dead and so far so good. We are working through the rules and tomorrow I have to rescue one of my Faction – Van Helsing – he was captured by the werewolves 😀
New Year’s Resolution
1) Get back to Escrima and take my son and get him started
2) Paint the rest of my Dust & Warzone Mini’s
3) More games!
Wishing you all a great Holiday!
Twilight Struggle sounds like the Crusader Kings 2 of boardgames, an insane grand strategy games that even after 100+ hours still haven’t fully grasped it.
Merry Christmas, all.
Have to ask, did Justin actually barf? He looked like he might…
I love TS but don’t have enough people to play it against, I’ll try again with my wife next month when the new gaming table arrives and we can flatten the old-style, thin board under the acrylic.
New Years resolutions:
Lose the half stone I’ve put on over the past month
Get better at painting
Drink a bit less
Thanks for the year guys and the many, many hours of entertainment you provided 🙂
Nooooo! You gave Justin socks, now he’s free and you can’t keep him in the basement anymore 🙁
So many good games! Twilight struggle is one that captures my interest. On a personal front I’ve got Arkham Horror which I’m looking forward to playing as love everything lovecraft and just know my gaming group, we’re predominately role-players, will get a real kick from it.
My new years resolution is to buy Twilight Imperium… whilst I may not get many games in its just something I feel I need to own!
I’ve had Arkham Horror for a while, but just bought Twilight Imperium. I wonder if I’ll ever have the opportunity to play that game?
Oh, and @cypher4242, I strongly recommend downloading one of the rules summaries for Arkham Horror. The rulebook is not Fantasy Flight Games’ finest hour, and a summary will make what is a complex game a lot more enjoyable.
This one is good: http://www.orderofgamers.com/arkham-horror-v7-1/
Although it looks like there’s a more up to date version available to download from BGG:
http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/22286/universal-head-arkham-horror-rules-summary-referen
Good luck and have fun!
This year was a little light on hobby stuff, due to getting a rather prices new watch. I did get some Airfix 1/72 US WW2 kits which will work well for my WW2 and Korean War campaigns, apart from that I also got the Osprey Black Ops rule book.
My resolutions for 2016 mainly consist of getting 20mm stuff built and painted, this includes Napolenic War (British and French), WW2 German, US and Russian plus the Korean War Chinese, US and British forces.
I also need to build and paint the minis for Sedition Wars game. Apart from that I would like to enter a couple of painting comps in 2016
I would suggest to @warzan go MERCs for your skirmish game, because it will cover you for MERCs and MERCs RECON
Belated Merry Christmas all
My lovely wife bought me a FW Sicaran for my 30k armies, and a Metal Earth R2D2 kit so need to finish current project so I can start those!
NY Resolutions
1. Having lost 2.5 stone 2yrs ago, I managed to regain 1.5 for those this year, so need to get rid of that again – aiming for end of March
2. Not to start anything new until I complete my current projects – Get my latest 30k army list to 3k – almost there just need to paint bits and add another tank! Have a half-painted Antares starter set to finish, a WWX KS on the way that will also need painting up. AvP KS, meh, if it ever arrives.
3. Once 1 and 2 are complete, as a reward I will treat myself to Dungeon Saga, but not before!!
It is still Christmas. The 26th December is the 2nd of 12 Christmas days. Switch them lights on.
Here in Spain i have to wait until January 6th to get my presents. Hoping for scy fy terrain for Antares, and a bunch of books, mostly GW. Codexes, novels…
Ticket to ride, what a game. My wife beat me once.
As i am on the larger side of life,
So…Warren it sounds good to me, 3 stone by MAY….. lol updates ever month (good or bad results).
As Warren and Aj put me back in the 40k mood
Got myself a Guurds Army so finishing that will be a start,
and if you fancy stepping into the 30k fluf, like the idea of the 30k and Wolves as an army have not ever bought.
three things for the new year…
loved the start thought it was Aliens I was watching with Ripley phoning Burke to go on the mission
great show guys and funny I am surprised Justin doesn’t have a tick with all the things dun to him.
All that disrespect about Kwak from Justin hurts me deep in my Phlegmisch, ehr… Flemish soul. I might have to cancel my BS pass if he doesn’t make amends. Then again, you have to be a proper man to appreciate proper Belgian beers (and I don’t mean the lagers) or love a good pint of Guiness.
Happy new year everyone.
I got Star Wars armada and the war and empire Kickstarter
Despite putting gaming stuff on my list every year, I can’t recall ever getting anything gaming related for Christmas in my adult life. Video games yes, but minis or board games sadly not. My family obviously doesn’t love me. I like myself quite a lot however, and availed myself of a Boxing Day sale online to acquire another 2 dozen miniatures for my Batman miniatures collection.
Warren not only a great game that Twilight Struggle, the more you will play the more you will love that, in fact i wanna play this days with a mate.
