Happy Sunday guys. Workshop sounds a good laugh!
I reckon we should all bring tents and make a gaming shanty town in your garden @warzan 😉
Open up studio One!
Goggles? she was probably a cybergoth 🙂 A lot of us into the industrial/EBM culture love goggles.
Just a shame they give you crap peripheral vision in clubs!
That’s why we need bionic eyes!
Great show guys. Nice to see everyone back and in fine form. Don’t worry Justin we’re breaking out the magic 8 ball to free you from bachelorhood.
“They don’t even exist- they’d be really easy to proxy.” – Brilliant!
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday, yeah bugs….. I cruise Infinity Hub, click tips&hints…… and get 40k stuff, and similar bugs at different clicks/places…
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday.
Happy Sunday! Would like to see the Trading Post option for backstagers.
Dolt Action…
Locked & Loaded is the name of Privateer Press’ annual convention.
I wish I could give 50 points to that comment. 🙂
Happy Sunday. 6 mins in and @warzan is talking about dillemas again, did you read Sun Tzu over Christmas again? Or have Art of War crackers?
Great show as always….good to have you all back!
How is John with the whole weird world war entering the battlefield with his historically accurate army ? lol
Near catatonic lol
Love the idea of a gaming bootcamp
I would come along to a BoW awards event (though I’ll have to buy a suit!)
I hear Knight Models will be releasing a rulebook for some Batman game just before the gaming weekend…..
I’d rent one, meself …
I would come all the way from Sweden in my suit to participate.
Happy Sunday!
I’d be interested in becoming a contributor, my blog is https://musketswordpaint.wordpress.com/ if you wanna check out some of articles.
Justin if its the picture i think it is. Then you have lovely white smile.
You mean a gob stuffed with marshmallow
yes
Tanks on tanks? I thought tanks attack/suppress infantry and anti-tank guns attack tanks. Tank on tank is fairly rare as I understand it.
I could (probably) be wrong, any of you know better?
Huzzah! I’ve just made my age on the karma.
You’re now younger than your karma! lol
It just keeps on getting better! 😎
There you go, you are now King of the Comments today 😉
It would take way too much for me to be younger than my Karma… LOL
Happy Sunday guys, great xbls can’t wait to see how things develop over the year.
Shooting my mouth off today but I find Warren’s Scooby Doo game utterly charming. What a great Daddy.
Bolt Action: Locked and Loaded Show. B.A.L.L.S
Brilliant.
That . . . is ***ing epic. That needs to be the name of the show! 😀
Bootcamps sound awesome but don’t pick Infinity for the first one as I’m not available at that time 🙂
Bolt Action, against artillery like that 17 pounder, the mortar option is a great idea, but you could also use a puma or other recce vehicle to get round behind it and take it out, as it gives you huge speed and the lovely recce rule and it can handle it’s self against infantry very well. And if a tank or big gun goes for it recce out the way is awesome. 🙂
Live Beasties would be cool and i would deffo be there 🙂
Why not call your Bolt action series ‘ A Band of Bolt Auctioneers ‘ .
It should read ‘ A Band of Bolt Actioners ‘. @*?!!*$@*** auto correct !!!!!!!
I rather prefer bolt auctioneers… 😉
That seems more like a name for the trading page. Speaking of which –
“Justin’s Jumble Sale”!
Maybe we’ll see a sharkarosorous in bolt action!
What is that miniature (?) behind Warren, that is sitting in front of the big storm trooper? Anyone know?
its a limited edition magic the gathering model think its called the eight and a half tales.
Happy Sunday!!
Yet another great show, if I had the chance to attend (and realistically I obviously cant fly over from Australia.) then the workshop would be a perfect BoW weekend, its why we’re all here right?
And I gotta acknowledge a threat I started this week, the feedback and just general support from my community completely turned me around to being passionate about TOing the event again 🙂
That is great to hear mate!
YES! Bolt Action brought me here to BoW with the demo video and i’m super excite4d to see more content! Justin go big or go home 🙂
http://us-store.warlordgames.com/collections/germany/products/german-heer-lefh-18-40-10-5cm-howitzer-1943-45
might just have to get me one of those 🙂
World Warren 3!
Another great one. 😀
Happy Sunday…
Well I will certainly attend an awards ceremony I have to get my use out of my tux which at this point comes out once a year for the annual gala dinner of my profession…lol
Still like the idea of nipping across to the boot camp would like it to be wild west exodus I am looking for an excuse to play that…lol
Happy Sunday!
My financial problem is solved, so back to Backstage! I’m so missed the XLBS shows….
Did you guys announce the winner of the gates of Antares stuff, or have I missed it
Great show again.
You know you are getting old when you cant remember all the things you wanted to say about the show by the time you finish watching it 🙁
I do remember thinking the award show idea was good, I really like the idea of a real ceremony, it would as far as I know be completely new in the gaming industry, and I think well worth the immense effort it would no doubt take to organise. I hope you manage to get that one going.
Happy Sunday gents! Cracking show as always, good look with all the developments!
Bolt Action miniseries should be called “BAB”. Bolt Action Beasts.
Hey Justin the heavy mortar and Nebelwefer are the same points wise but I’d go with the Nebelwefer. It counts as a heavy mortar, it fires more than just smoke and has the multiple launcher special rule (pg 54 of the rule book). It can only hit on a 6 BUT it hits all units (friend & foe) within 6 inches of your target.
yea i see that now having a closer read of my BA books here 🙂
Very exciting stuff! I hope I might me able to contribute 😀
That Scooby Doo game keeps getting better each time we hear about it!
Cluedo! I bought my sister Cluedo for Christmas and her fiance came round to play it and it was great fun. Shame to hear the two player version isn’t so good as I’d bought that one thinking they could play it at their house. Although a game about murder suspects needs more than just two people.
I was thinking the same thing about how cool it would be to have a bit of detective work in games, or in wargames where you have to figure something out, such as which of the enemy minis has your stolen blueprints etc, and really add some intrigue to the game. I think if this sort of element of deduction or social interaction; a reason to play other than just to beat the other player with your army, is something that, I think, would attract more women to play wargames. It sounds like I’m saying ‘Bring on Cluedo Wars’, lol! But I think that element of the Cluedo, how it’s played using deduction, trickery etc, would make a wargame more appealing to women. Maybe. 😛
@dignity – Please don’t let Warren and Lloyd talk you out of your Bolt Action game plan. 81mm/120mm mortars sounds like a great addition (to any army, in any system) to suppress enemy fixed emplacements. Smoke screens don’t really work well on mobile units (in general) because they simply drive out of the smoke screen, but against emplaced units, they work great. Also . . . BRAVO on the use of off-board artillery.
One question the Nebelwerfer . . . they can only drop smoke rounds? That doesn’t sound right at all. Maybe I didn’t hear it right, or maybe Bolt Action allows for different ammo loads? Nebelwerfers were historically famous for their ability to put down tremendous amount of HE-frag, in fact some other games specifically stipulate that Nebelwerfers CAN’T fire smoke rounds (yes, I know “nebelwerfer” literally means smoke thrower in German, but this was a prewar development name so foreign observers wouldn’t ping the Germans on violations of the Versailles Treaty). Most batteries didn’t have smoke rounds available.
Still, 81 and 120 mortars can drop smoke and the Nebelwerfers and off-board artillery would plaster the enemy position.
One reason the 81mm and 120mm mortars may have a similar overall effectiveness as a Nebelwerfer battery . . . rate of fire. Yes, Nebelwerfers slam targets with tremendous barrages . . . but then take several minutes to reload, reconnect the electrical firing triggers, etc. Mortars can put down HE as fast as the crew can drop shells in the tube. The rate of fire (and weight of explosive) is tremendous, out of all proportion to the caliber of the individual shell.
More Allied casualties were inflicted by German mortars than any other weapon in World War II.
It’s great to see some Bolt Action “attention” being paid to these less-glamorous but historically devastating weapons. 😀
cheers dude im having a look around for some other units and stuff to add 🙂 i might go for a puma, i think having a little light fast movement might work well 🙂
One last thing . . . just please bear in mind that I don’t play Bolt Action yet myself but play plenty of WW2 war games . . . So just in a general gaming sense . . .
It sounds like you have a plan. That’s awesome. Stick with it, especially if the scenario in hand has you on the attack. When you’re on defense, obviously you have to pay much more attention to what the opponent is doing. Otherwise, execute YOUR plan flawlessly. May HIM react to YOUR plan. In the words of Ralph Peters: “ram your plan down his throat.”
I’ve seen a lot of good games (ASL, Panzer Leader, Johnny Reb, Valor and Victory, Harpoon, Seekrieg, GDW Assault, etc etc) . . . won or lost because a player lost sight of his plan. Not saying to be inflexible, but like the saying goes: “Greatness lies not in doing extraordinary things, but doing simple things extraordinarily well.”
I dunno, I just heard Warren semi-trying to talk you out of a plan you had in mind 9warning you to be more reactive to what the opponent is doing), and again, I’m not saying not to be mindful of what the enemy is doing, but make the opponent be mindful of what YOU’RE doing. 😀
oh i know, so far im in the lead on wins for our BA games, but i do keep trying to make the games more than just a sledge hammer i’d rather have a good close meat grinder than a steam roller match 🙂 its why im taking less armour and seeing where else i can spend my points to mak him think from what i can tell the 17pdr is to counter the tanks ive been using (german armour in BA is a little OP) so its a cheap way to get a big gun to deal with them, so far we’ve been well balanced on what we’re taking as we keep reacting to the other.
Also, I should have said this earlier . . . but I love the changes to the site so far.
VERY glad to hear the User Galleries are coming back. I was afraid this had been lost the “mists of history” so to speak. Also, VERY supportive of the Backstage-only aspect of the Galleries.
Definitely like the idea of BoW Team profiles (and “wider contributors”).
Definitely like the “Contributor” section and content, and posting “themes, directions, and editorial” so we all know what you’re looking for. This sounds great, e-mails are getting a little old. 🙂
Also like the idea of Beasts of War “Trading” space . . . a few people have approached me about trading / sending counter sheets, pdfs, minis, and it isn’t easy to coordinate in the current state.
A lot of these ideas sounds really great! Seriously, this is exciting stuff. 😀
I think the live awards ceremony sounds brilliant. Was going to say that the end of the year will be a difficult time, but if you hold them in the new year, that solves that problem. Depending on what it cost, it’s something I might make the effort to come to.
I also like the sound of your boot camp weekend. I’m busy and can’t come to the one you’re talking about now, but if it’s a game that even vaguely interests me, I’d be interested in doing it in future.
Looking forward to the Bolt Action series, although I hope @warzan goes with a historical army. I agree that Bolt Action can be used for ‘weird’ stuff too, and I think a different show about a special ‘weird’ game or even campaign would be cool too, but I think you’ll miss out on a lot of fun if you ignore the history for the ‘tale of bolt Action gamers’. And it will change the nature of the show and the comments at the same time.
Great show guys , as usual . Justin ,as orikany says Nebelwerfers fired HE rounds , about 6.5 pounds of explosive per 1941 model rocket . Perhaps BA just lets you fire smoke ? ( another one of BA’s weird rules ? ) Plus your actual range is 22000 ft in real life , how many inches in BA ? Sorry I don’t play so I don’t know , I just build the tanks . About housing for the BOW weekend , your single now Justin , how much room you got at your place ?
Last comment (sorry, I’m kind of yapping a lot this morning) . . .
T-34s! Not T-35s! Thirty-FOURS! Thirty-FOURS! When you play the Soviets you take loads of loads of T . . . thirty-FOURS!
That said, I’m looking forward to the return of the Nachtwulfen! (sp?)
so is that 34, 34’s then sir?
Sorry, but these have been called T-35s a few times now. 🙂
How can you be sure I didn’t mean T-35 with all the multi turret goodness 😉
Fair point, sir. Now if you were going to field an army of THOSE? That would be epic. You ever see one of these things in 15mm? Easily twice the size of a “normal” tank, with a crew of 11.
&w=775&q=75
An early war company of those would be fearsome . . . if a little slow. 😀
Trading post is a good idea, could it also be used to find people to play games with?
hay guys id like to contribute to BoW i thnk what you guys do on a day to day basis is amazing and id like to chip in and help
Ehm am i the only one that can see this video ? I hit play but it stops right there… no loading.. nothing
Right click and open in another tab, or if I phone just hold until given option to open in another tab.
Another great weekender. Unfortunately I just had a burger in my mouth, when you talked about “LLLLLLOOOOOOOYYYYDDDDDD…. WITH FIREWORKS”. Laughed so hard, nearly choked.
Ambition is always good. When you talked about 2015 Annual Awards as a live black tie event I got a real tingling in my fingertips. Something like that would be really great. And I think you guys could pull it off. What you achieved in the last year is incredible. I can remember quite well, when Warren was reading the letter why you had to split from Wayland and all the GW stuff about a year ago. I really feared the project might disappear. And now you are at a point, where you are able to trash video material, because it didn’t comply with your quality aspirations and two studios. I don’t know if everybody realises how hard it can be to take something you worked on and say “nope, thats not it, into the bin” and start over again. This is a huge step in every production and I’m sure it will increase the quality of the content even more. Keep on astonishing me!
A boot camp sounds nice. There are so many games I would love to try but didn’t get around to it just yet. Also it would be quite more interactive and you could meet and talk to more people than on a tournament. And to be honest for me the event would be all about meeting people and having a good time.
A couple of suggestions for the next awards:
– best hobby instruction Youtube video (painting, terrain construction, etc)
– best painted miniature on the new BoW galleries
And for the website:
– a section that lists clubs and any players looking for clubs
– a General Chat forum
I was also thinking about the possibility of not only having a place to buy/sell/trade stuff, but also a place where you can invite gamers in your area to a game of x, y or z.
brilliant show guys do you have a name for the contributor’s section what about the green room? then?
Really enjoyed the show today guys, looking forward to your Tale of Bolt Actioning and the changes to the site. Maybe we could combine the two and make use of the forums/user galleries to have a Tale of X wargamers where anyone in the community can sign up and get involved, you could even do some boot camp style events to get members over to play some games for the site then.
For my money I would do it with infinity given its small model count, it did so well in the awards (and I haven’t gotten into it yet) and then you could call the forum A Tale of Infinite Armies 😉
I would certainly attend an awards show. that sounds awesome. ticket sales could even go towards funding it
New Backstager here. Great episode.
Re: Cluedo
There already is an edition for both Scooby-Doo and D&D
Re: Warren’s Weird War II army for Both Action and Iron Sky Nazis
If you haven’t seen Frankenstein’s Army, check it out. My son (who’s one of the designers of the Skylander’s video games) and I watched this over Christmas and laughed our asses off. Ridiculous and kind of awesome and full of crazed steampunky nazi cyborgs. We were commenting that this thing was ripe for a dungeon crawler or the tabletop.
This was one of the best XLBS’s for a while, thought the “easy to Proxy” comment was so funny! – boot camp will be brilliant, just wondering if the price could include a starter set in it. – to get us all going… Then we can look at rules, tactics and painting over the course of the weekend. – or just get banjaxed in the bar and make it up as we go along!
@dignity Mortars definitely the way to go take a spotter too. Try not to put your sniper where he can see everything on the table, by the same token everything can see him. He is far better deployed where he can control a specific zone.
The Black tie event in Nottingham sounds great also boot camp is a great shout certainly better than a tournament which could be limiting if you didn’t pick the right game.
Happy Monday! I’m catching up 🙂
Looking forward to an update to the web page. It may just be me but I always have trouble finding certain content, hobby lab springs to mind, that isn’t always where you think it should be.
New shirt for Christmas Warren?
Hi there,
I own a small gaming/miniatures shop in Dorset, and would be very intrested in the idea of being able to buy a table at the awards ceremony, it would be an awesome day/night out to go to as shop staff/regulars and hobby groups. I love the idea!
Noc
great show, the Scooby game sounds great. looking forward to trying that with my kids
Oi Warzan… I suggested (although I worded it differently) the bootcamp idea on the comments of the episode of Backstager where you firstmentioned inviting us backstagers round for a weekend, where is my mention? where’s the credit?
I may have to go sulk in a corner and kick a tin can around….
Good call
The Infinity RPG might be a good fit for a Cluedo game mechanic. First you have to figure out who actually has the mysterious alien artefact. Then you can go in with a task force and take it from them.
I hope Modiphius is watching this show.
Hadn’t heard any mention of a planned gaming weekend yet. Which news update did I miss?
Great show as always and I have a good feeling about 2015 just like you have. great to see BoW end the year on a high note and ever greater to hear your visions for 2015. It will be a memorable ride Im sure.
Im all for a dressed up award show event. I would come from Sweden to participate. Just as your boot camp idea. Im there with a little heads up. Have some vacation left since last year and it sounds like a perfect vacation to me.
I took a wow of Bolt action to for 2015 so it will be really cool to watch your show. That show would be even greater if you invited us viewers to build along. Like the old White dwarf build along that inspired your ‘tales of three armies’ title. Every week or every second week you would set a goal and we could do too. Love it!
About your content contributer thing. Would love to contribute, been too long since I felt involved in the gaming community. In the ninties I lived for it and now I miss giving and creating for others. I need a purpose and BoW could be that focus to start and produce material again. What should I do with my pent up need for sharing?
Wow, that was a long one. A ‘close to the heart’ episode.
Can’t wait to catch up on this weekend’s XLBS.
This weekend I have been mostly playin Tor’s Relics. Great game with a really interesting game mechanic and some lovely factions. (demonic insect faeries vs straw puppet napoleonic toy solders). Brilliant.
I echo the thumbs up for a gathering/workshop (without having heard the details!)
I just upgraded my free account of 4 years to a paid monthly Backstage account today, so it’s great to hear about all the upcoming additions to Backstage. I have been enjoying your videos for a long time now and I decided today it’s time for me to do my part to help you guys out. I appreciate all your hard work and wish you a long and prosperous future. I hope ALL you guys get out to Gen Con here in my hometown of Indianapolis. Cheers!
Hope you have a great time in Backstage, here’s just a few cool links to get started:

I like Bolt Action: Locked and Loaded.
Great show guys 🙂 Slowly catching up with the content.
