Azhag the Slaughterer Character Breakdown
January 26, 2012 by warzan
Mounted on his terrifying Wyvern, Skullmuncha. Azhag is a deadly mixture of melee and magic... but what do the Beasts of Waaagh boys think of him. Darrell and Warren give their thoughts on the Orc and Goblins Army’s most notable general.

It’s disappointing because he is one of my favourite models. Why, GW, why?
It seams like GW is tuning up the price of most of the special characters, mostly wizard characters. I think he is expensive because of the Crown of Sorcery.
The same goes for Lord Skrolk in the skaven book. He is a good character but a lvl 3 wizard for 470pts…
That doesn’t really explain Kroq-Gar though, he’s the most expensive character in the Lizardmen army list and he is not a wizard. Mazdamundi’s better simply because he rides a Stegadon and is Loremaster in whatever Lore he chooses.
I haven’t looked at the new Lizardmen book (switch army to Skaven) but in the old one Kroq-Gar was pretty good if I remember correctly.
Never been a fan of special characters anyway as i like to kit out my own characters and give them some back story that runs with the theme of my army 🙂
the easyest explanation is this. The Lizardmen book is a 7th edition book.
man, it’s a real shame that Azhag got nerfed I always thought that he is actually one of the coolest Orc characters in Warhammer
I just hope Grimgork Ironhide didn’t got the same treatment, ’cause that would break my heart
some things that could maybe make Azhag better:
Azhag is called the Slaughterer why not give him a weapon that wounds automatic? or on a 2+ and causes D3 wounds
he wears the Crone of fucking Nagash and the best he gets is to be a level 3 Wizard, at least they could make him cast spells while in combat or an lore master, you know copping down some folks and then hit ’em with a nasty death spell
and his aura is good but only if it would affect the whole army as long as he’s alive
THAT would justify his insanly high costs, and the model cost 65€ oO quite expensive for seeing it one round befor you break in tears
Always nice to listen to you, guys, great video. But, I think you need to get your head around that characters in Warhammer fantasy are expensive; 550 pts for Azhag is not overly expensive (if overpriced at all), unless you want ultra cheap special character running around on every gaming table? 350 points? come on? 🙂 A Black orc Warboss on a wyvern without any options or magic items is 325 pts. So for 225 points you get: +1 initiative (big deal vs insta-kill spells), his special rules + all his magic items – not to shabby.
Is he useful againt all armies? of course not, but I could gladly field him vs WoC, Beastmen, Bretonnia, Daemons, lizardmen, Vampire Counts, Ogres and High Elves.
A certain charging on turn 2, with 5 re-rollable Strength 6 on the charge + 3 Stength 6 attacks from Skullmuncha + D6 Strength 6 hits for Thunderstomp = good fun :)… Also if you get Purple sun of Xeresus, he can be devastating!
Character mounted on a monster is always a risk (higher against some armies), but that is a general problem for all characters on monsters, not just Azhag…
Maybe they thought he couldn’t go in 2000 point games. Maybe because of fluff, we’ll see Azhag, Archaon etc. have high points so they don’t become a mainstay in most competitive armies. But why they’d do this, I don’t know. Also, this still assumes that they still made the mistake of way way overpricing him…
One thing that might slightly justify Azhag, and some other named characters for that matter, is if they came with rules for modifying the army list. Something that either lowered the cost of certain units or removed/loosened unit restrictions for example. A bit of blasphemy perhaps but I like the tier system from Warmachine, as an example.
Azhag the Slaughtered. nuff sed
One thing that could potentially save him if you get the second turn is hide him behind a giant! As wings and hornes don’t count for LOS you’ll be able to save Azhag&Skullmuncha untill your turn. And by then the enemy has hopefully moved in the charge distance, so you simply fly over the giant and hide in combat which considering 5 re-rollable attacks from Azhag + 3 from Skullmuncha + D6 from Thunderstomp, all at strenth 6 (-3 armour save) will on average be in your favor. Not forgeting terror which just might start the panic caskade and fear which will render your oponent WS1, leaving him at your mercy!
P.S. Hiding behind the giant may be usefull even on your first turn, seeing as enemy may not be yet in range for a charge. Terror may backstab you, as if the enemy flees you can find yourself in the middle of the field, with nothing to redirect or over charge into and no giant to hide behind. But then there is magic! Pray that you get Purple Sun of Xereus ( which you have more than a 50% chance to) and then ram it with all your dice(to the max of 6) at the enemy. Now thats something they didn’t expect from an Orc army!!!
