The Celestian Kings of War Army Gets New Concepts
June 22, 2012 by brennon
You may remember that Kings of War was graced with some Angelic concept art at the beginning of the week. Well, let's see more from Mantic Games as they explore the Celestian faction a little more...
The newest concept art comes in the form of this Man-At-Arms which will form the steady centre of any Celestian army. I like the medieval style armour and the fact that they mirror the undead counterparts that we saw when Kings of War first launched. It gives the world some added credibility when you can tell the undead humans came from another faction.
Next up are the Battle Nuns that wouldn't look out of place in the world of Diablo with that art style. Some nice continuity between the Men-At-Arms and the Nuns armour tying them into a unified faction. Let's hope the models turn out as nice as the concept art.
Last but not least is the reason we are all here. Celestian armies are all good but Dwarfs riding Brocks is what the fuss is all about surely?
Dwarfs riding badgers! The voice of the masses was heard and we can only hope this is the final concept art before Mantic put their sculptors to the grindstone and get them working all hours of the day to bring us these models.
57 Hours left (as of posting this!) on the Kickstarter so get pledging!
So how do you like the way the Celestians are shaping up?

That Man-At-Arms looks amazing, a great pose that makes a fresh change rom the generic weapons-ready charging forwards pose of many other miniatures.
He looks like a hero or champion model but time will tell 😀
It’s a masterstroke as far as I’m concerned to tie the Celestian armour to the undead range as it puts original Mantic fluff into mini form through TWO ranges making it more solid even than the non-robed elves or flat-helmeted dwarves.
I would however like to see the nuns get more plate armour in that same neck-and-shoulder covering style like the first concepts so that while the 40K players can have their extra Sororitas sculpts, the KOW players can have their Celestian men-at-arms with the same armoured neckpiece and gauntlets but otherwise use chainmail and cloth so that they look like the rank-and-file compared to the nuns and also have something to set them apart from Perry plastics. Right now the art looks too much like a historical mini for me and Mantic need a stronger image for their troops so that people don’t simply do what all the WHFB Empire players on a budget do. I say keep the helmet for the fluff tie-in but change the armour a little…after all the undead are the old human civilisation so things will have changed for the more modern living. Also don’t use the face mask with grille on the nuns as I’ll have to call those ladies ‘Hannah B. Lecter’ – it’s too evil compared to a cloth mask IMO. 😉
The new Brock is also great, but that’s no berserk madman atop it as he’s too well armoured and calm. If the Brocks are to be ridden by regular warriors instead, then ditch that winged helmet – it’s too much like Warhammer compared to the LOTR Gimli-style flat helmets I mentioned earlier. Personally I’d love to see a more animated version of this Brock showing its fangs with the lizard-riding Berserker on top for the perfect combo…and keep the lizard for the Twilight Kin’s heavy cavalry (Abyssal Riders I believe) since most will use Cold Ones for now anyway.
Overall though this is really promising work and this Kickstarter has been quite something to watch as it grew in scope. Looking forward to the sculpts! 🙂
Agreed, the war badger needs the lunatic berzerker rider, he was great. The lizard creature was nice but didn’t say dwarf cav.
Im with everyone on the badger/berserker combo. The nuns I expected to be more staff users or marshal art hand to hand fighters. Or even having them healers and buff support.
The Celestians are an awesome concept timed well with the recent release of Diablo 3. My angels will get diablo-style “wings” for sure! And I will convert proper Nephilim leaders for the Men-at-arms, Paladins and Nuns!
When that army is done, a demonic counterpart will have to be made! And that will be about as fun! 😀
I’m glad Mantic decided to go with the badgers, its an awesome concept and very original (I may be wrong but I don’t think anyone has come up with that before)
looks good, i wonder if KofW will take off in a big way as the new whfb and 40k does seem to be enough at the mo for GW to fend off the mantic threat
