Kings of War Week: Kingdoms of Men Faction Breakdown
October 30, 2013 by warzan
The guys get their teeth sunk into the Kingdoms of Men faction for Kings of War. From the looks of things, this will be the faction to let you bring whatever you want to the table in terms of alternate minis and such.

got to go for a knights templer army using fireforge minis
Aha! This is the one I’ve been waiting for.
That is incredibly awesome and well just honest and friendly of Mantic. Just to completely admit that there is such diversity that they just can’t even begin to offer, and there are great miniatures out there for those options. Now that is how you go about trying to help grow the hobby as a whole.
The bulk of my force came from Renedra plastics; War Of The Roses.
Neat idea to have that flexibility in there.
Historic, more or less, would probably work best.
Some Greek Hoplites, with or without greek mythology monsters added in.
Or, if you have some Braveheart Ogres, add a few more Clansmen. Finding a suitable Mel Gibson miniature with kilt and mullet is gonna by tricky though.
I’m thinking human/ogre pirate army.
an army with a little something for everyone
I honestly am having a hard time figuring out what I would do for this one. If all else I could do evil humans that work with Abyssal Dwarfs but the Samurai, Norse, and mercs. sound really awsome as well. This is a tough one for me.
Just pick whichever one appeals to you the most.
If you are making a Samurai list I have already started mine and can help give you ideas.
Thanks, but more or less this one (kingdoms of men) would be down the pipeline a far ways. After Abyssal Dwarfs. Been really looking forward to those guys first.
No problem. The Abyssal Dwarfs look good.
I haven’t got far with my KOM yet.
At building stage.

I love the idea that you can use any Human mini to create this army.
There are tears verging on my eyes right now – the concept of this is so beautiful… The Hail Ceasar! line from warlord games… Roman Legions VS Orc Hordes…Dacian Riders against Ogre Onslaught… Spartans against waves of Undead…
AMAZING!!
Currently making a Samurai army for KIngs of War. Also got some elves and undead I need to work on.
I am currently working on a Samurai Army. I have used my Romans with Ogre support as well. Another idea would be to build for the forces of neutrality and use lots of war beasts and Druids.
I am thinking a combo North, South, and Central Native American Armies. From South/Central America you have Aztec foot soldiers with obsidian blades, maybe flying snake cavalry. From North America archers, spear-men, and light horse cavalry. I need to look at the rules but find a way to incorporate a Windigo or wearwolf/bear heavy unit. They would definitely be allied with the forces of nature.
The range of possible ideas here is endless. Having humans as neutral is a really nice mechanic.
Flexibility and Creativity for the Win !
Looks good.
I also have a pile of Wargames Factory Samurai with the aim to doing a human army.
But i have just ordered my self a Basilean army deal from mantic.
I do love the Men…. uh yeah I mean the faction 😛
You could always go for a classic and have Roman centurians!
This is why Mantic are the people’s company.
I wonder how this is going to play out on the field.
I would have to go with a Band of the Hawk for one idea, tying into the mercenary band idea. can do straight kingdoms of men for golden age and then ally with ogres and abyssals for after the fall.
Great to see that other people’ figures could be used for the kingdoms of man. The variety is endless. Well done Mantic! Another use for some of those medieval figures.
So many opportunities with a Kingdoms of Men Army!!!
Human Abyssals, lead by religious leaders similar to the Priors from Stargate SG1. Blessed are the Abyssals!
Great little video and more kudos to Mantic for being so open to the imagination of the players, gamers and modellers out there.
While most people are suggesting themed armies, there is scope for homogenous forces – pick what you fancy and the back story could be something like an alliance of kingdoms fighting to stave off some unspeakable foe – infantry from one, archers from another, cavalry from a third and so on.
Or go mad with an army of religious zealots, cultists, tax-inspectors… 🙂
Entry 14! YES, YES, YES!!! Definitly my favouite faction, with Abyssal Dwarfs coming a close second
I think its a great idea to let people use minis from other franchieses to play kings of war, it allows for alot of diversity
i would probably go for a mercenary army, with units from all over , with lots of different styles and equipment in the different units. That way I get to pick all the minatures I like best across the current ranges…
A very interesting concept, one that certainly gets the old creative juices flowing. It would be great to see a gallery of peoples take of the kingdom of men. I personally wonder about an Eastern European feel with winged hussars as cavalry.
Now I’m torn between factions.
These sound like interesting take on humans in fantasy world.
Smurfs with attitude
Oh man… I can finally give my friend a reason to use his Empire models from whfb!
So many ways to make this faction individualized.
Good for Mantic for encouraging people to use whatever models they like for Kingdoms of Men!
I think if I was going with this faction I would want a story behind them. Warren mentioned humans as the fresh undead. But how about the other side of the coin? How about the humans that live near the undead and must constantly fight them off to survive? Some sort of rough bunch of village survivors who just scrap up whatever they can get to fight off the undead that roam into their towns? Not sure what figure to use for that but I think it would be really cool.
I could see an Arabian Kingdoms of Men army like 1001 Nights.
Ronnie will need to pick out a one, if not two, cool neutral KoM model ranges. 🙂
I do hope Mantic don’t release any Kindoms of Men minis. Their list allows pretty much any models to be used, and I can get creative with my Perry Miniatures knights.
I would do either Samurai or Norse. Not sure.
I like the idea of Norse inspired troops, using Gripping beast figures for my Kingdoms of Men army.
I could assemble an mercenary force using all those Reaper Bones I got.
how about we sculpt some kingdoms of men in a second KoW kickstarter =D
do a selection of warriors from your favorite types, and just do an all star army!!!
Awesome idea of mantic to have this flexible option in there core system. The possibilities are endless.
Samurai, knights, norsemen have all been mentioned. I like one of the previous posts regarding greek hoplites etc.
Celtic armies and Roman armies …. so many ideas.
such a great faction for customizing
I like that you can go pick your own miniatures for them. That’s pretty neat.
I suppose, technically, you could do this for any of the armies. Since there are endless amounts of undead, elven, dwarven and what else kind of miniatures out in the world.
Still, the thing I like is that Mantic encourages it theirselves. Normally we get alternate miniatures either because we don’t like official ones or because we want to customize something. But having the developer actually say “get what you like and use it” is nice, and like people before me said it helps the hobby world as a whole. I buy a rulebook from Mantic and my army from various other companies. Everyone wins.
I really like this… this is exactly what I’m looking for in a game.
And it has to be said: Game of Thrones -themed armies.
Yes it does need to be said. I might actually try a house stark army.
Gonna use my Bretonnians for these
Awesome approach use your own minis but result…
TOO MUCH CHOICE!
WargamesFactory have Japanese, Persian, Amazons, Romans, Greeks, Celts… all 28mm
What’s the scale of KoW? Although I guess as long as the base sizes are right that’s all that really matters.
Yet another great interesting video made
I’ve got a Macedonian army that would kick ass in KoW due to the insane bonus for pike phalanx…*evil laugh*
Yet another great video made there guys
A highlander Scots army would look cool on the battlefield…
this army is a great way to use cool historical figures mixed with myth and fantasy. the ally rules make it fun and simple. Greeks with mythical monster allies, Celts with fey allies, Arabians with flying carpets and djinn, Vikings with frost giants and such. or just strait up humans! I use my hundred years war figures, with loads of reckless knights.
Merc Knights lots of horses and light bowman could be fun
I love me some orges!
Incredible.
i whould do knight themed
These guys are my current KOW project- I will be going for a Norse theme using mainly Gripping Beast miniatures, plus bear-cavalry and a hero on a flying longship!
Like the Viking + dwarves idea Warren =) I had not realised the Kingdoms of Men faction was so open. I recently bought a stack of plastic Vikings to start Saga so now I have a second use for them! For historicals in general though there’s a ton of awesome plastic mini’s out there often weighing in at the princely sum on 50p a figure: Perry’s War of the Roses, Gripping Beast’s Viking and Dark Age warriors, Normans from Conquest and a huge range of stuff from the likes of Warlord and Wargames Factory.
Not only tons of choice but cheap. Consider this, on Wayland the Perry war of the roses box is £16.20. That builds 40 troops with enough bows to arm 30 or 18 with halberds (for pike men). Lets say you bought two boxes to make a horde and a regiment of Missile Troops along with a Pole Arms regiment. Before upgrades that’s 370 points for £32.40. Get the closes equivalent in Bretonnian and you’re talking £83 (Wayland prices again) and even at that you’re a couple of figures shy of your Pole Arms regiment. A staggering difference and these are quality sculpts from the same Perry twins that do/did GW.
Of course you can use anyone’s figures with anyone’s game in theory but have to applaud Mantic here for being so open with it and you at least know that no-one’s going to look down their nose at them or say they’re not “legal”.
Kudos for Mantic for having such an open minden perspective, even encouraging for using minis from other companies. They are a great asset to the hobby.
As for what theme I would choose, maybe some human/ogre pirate themed thing.
The beauty of what mantic brings to any table is not just a great line up of models but brings other companies in that hobbyist enjoy which stops the game from becoming stale with no new ideas.
Never really understood a kingdoms of men army within a fantasy setting. So boring. However, this gives you sooooo many options, that maybe I need to re-think that.
I’m glad to see that Mantic is supportive of using models from other companies to represent the kingdoms of men.
i think a human force aligned with nature would be cool, having them sort of tribal/ back to basics who worship the woodland and everything in it
I’m planning on allying them with Ogres and Forces of Nature and use Celts for the Humans Forces of Nature for the Druids (Although I could use them as a priest or Wizard if playing a game with no allies). So Far only started the Ogres and made a Earth Elemental out of Milliput to many armies to paint up.
I am thinking build a gladiators army.
Pretty cool
Some crazy ideas come to mind when thinking about these humans
Its nice to see a company not taking every opportunity to squeeze every last penny from its gamers
Waiting for your Kingdoms of Men miniatures.
Lots of great ideas. I have always fancied a pirate themed or mercenary army. Lots of plastic historicals out there to build armies on the cheap. Persians would look good too!
I have a load of roman era German warriors that I had been intending to use for War and Conquest, but it never occurred to me that I could use them in a fantasy game like KoW. The adaptability of the Kingdoms of Men is something beautiful, thanks Mantic.
Wonder when they are going to produce their own line of models?
Eh, the fact that they do not have models out for this is slightly discouraging. Yeah, I like how they allow people to bring in other models from other ranges, but most other ranges look bad… Just my opinion though.
Would do kingdoms of men as pirates or serfs to Baselean. Love those angels!
being able to use any range is cool, fireforge games, wargames factory, warlord, gripping beast……
I’m now thinking an Aiel army from Wheel of Time with smaller units ftom the other WoT cultures to face off against my friends Abyssal army…
I will have an oriental themed army. Samurai mostly! May have to wait a bit though, still wanting my elf tree army first.
This is really interesting, I’d love to make a steampunky army lots of rifles pikes and maybe ally with some dwarfs to explain the technology…
I would like to do an army from the City Spartha. Foot Guard use Classical Greek Hoplites plastic boxed set. Spear Phalanx use Spartan Armoured Hoplites plastic boxed set. Pike Phalanx use Macedonians: Phalangites plastic boxed set. Knights use Macedonians Companion Cavalry. Just as a start.
OOOoooooo I love the openness of this but still think the should do a stock few of Mantic made factions for the man just the main ones…
would love to ally them with some ogres as an emerging kindom helping produce the firearms and forge the blades the ogres go to war with in exchange for protection within the ogres lands… not sure what models i’d use to represent this but a vague idea of some ottoman types who fled their part of the world to escape a cataclysm? possibly a tsunami hence prefering mountains? hmmmm
I really like how they are neutral so you can have any type of force.
There’s so much possibilities, I wouldn’t know what to choose; a zulu army mixed with
Mongol, or maybe an Iroquois inspired army with the addition of a bear cavalry, the list is endless
Half constructed my army for virtually nothing!
10 Bretonian Mounted Knights from way back when.
40 Bretonian / Empire Bowmen also lying around from a long time ago.
1 Knight on a Pegasus (General) In a bits box.
40 Macedonian Phalangites by Warlord as Pike Phalanx. £20
I’m thinking of getting some American Civil War style Gatling guns to use as Organ guns.
