Wrath of Kings Week: How To Build A Force
February 3, 2017 by dignity
Justin sits down with Dave Taylor from Cool Mini Or Not to learn how to build a Wrath of Kings faction ready for battle regardless of whether it's a Patrol, Skirmish or Battle sized army.
Watch Wrath of Kings Week
Wrath of Kings has various game sizes that players may choose from, each giving different options and army sizes. Using Dave's Nasier force as an example we start from a Patrol and work our way up to a Battle sized force.

Very usefull ! (And i have nasier so, double usefull 😀 )
I do like a quick and easy army build system.
Dave has some nicely painted minis there.
I just want to say that the format and segments of this series has been by far better than others. The progression of the factions, to the game, to the terrain to building of the army. I liked this far better than the Relic Knights series. I like that you had a discussion of each faction close up without the terrain getting in the way. I liked the play because you discussed options as you went along. The game was also smoother and faster. The terrain segment was excellent in talking about options for factions. And then this, discussing the meta to build your army. An excellent intro and hopefully a template for the future. Awesome!
Hope we see other games throughout the year. For example, the Rising Sun game KS in March from the team that developed Blood Rage.
That was really informative. It seems like a really simple system for building lists.
Really cool to see how building a force works
Really unique composition system was kinda curious of a good no point system
Currently waiting for the UPS track to deliver my two player starter box!!! LOL oh and if I win a box set I’ll be giving it to my friends!!!! I never win so I’m not getting my hopes high!!!! Excellent Wrath of Kings week!!!!
Is there europian distributor for this game yet?
Element games seem to have the first wave of the range asked them about the new book ,they say their looking into it and I should check the site in a couple of weeks
There’s quite a few of the uk ebay shops that are selling the starter sets, don’t seem to have all of the individuals though. Hopefully the distribution expands.
A Patrol-sized game should not be too hard to get started with.
Useful info. Always cool, when you can start a game with just a few minis.
Its was good to see how someone that knows what they are doing makes a list and explains why he took what he did.
Been looking at the unit cards on their website, looks like every faction can build both a horde and an elite force. Love that!
I’ve really enjoyed this level of in-depth coverage of the game. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on what the game is, how the core mechanics work, what I’d need to get started and how I could build out from there. And the overview of the factions, that sort of introduced to the world mythology and where each faction fits into it, makes me excited to really get in there, play some games and delve deeper into Arikania. If more companies team up with Beasts of War to promote their games this way then my wallet will be a very sad panda.
Another cracking series of videos to showcase another great game
Nice to see this video
But I dont want it to end 🙁 More videos please!
Glad to see the full coverage of Wrath of Kings. Feel while the game is on the more small end of rules it gives you a lot of quality options, and it is always nice to be able to not be worried about getting rules wrong or having to remember rules pages all the time.
Good tips. I’ll have to rewatch this once I’ve chosen my faction.
Love this game. Am interested in how the mechanics of the initiative bongos and higher moral advantages work in forming a foce
Goritsi are the best
I like the stat cards, very simple. Nice collection!
So much to keep in mind when building a force. Very cool.
Good to see how you tackled it as an expanding series. Got to admit tempting me to break my no new systems rule.
Great walkthrough. These kind of videos are ahuge help as to what to take and how to think. And also gives bit more understanding of the game. Thank you.
Btw – both pdf links in the description points to the gamesize pdf.
nice vid!
That was very informative. This video should have gone up at the start. Or at least before the demo game. It would have cleared up a few things.
Really useful as I can show this video to the person I’m trying to convince to come play with me that they don’t need tons of figures to play.
Any news on when the rising conflicts book will be available in the U.K.?
I love the unique factions, mechanics and models.
Simple yet deep gameplay
Great video again guys, really easy to understand. Cant wait to put a force together myself now, just need to decide on a faction!
The links are playing up, they’re both linked to the Game Size PDF.
I really enjoyed this series and will most probably be investing in this game. Thanks to Justin and the team for putting this week together. Dave’s Nazier force is also quite superb looking and I would seriously enjoy fielding that in a game.
good need this for more of the games i am into
Well set out and very useful ,now have to hide from the other half who plays nassier. Goritsi for the WIN.
Thanks for sharing this great game.
very helpful video….good stuff.
This video was really helpful. Next time there’s an Infinity week – something like this would be awesome.
Really great video regarding force building. My interest grows, now to work the thumbscrews on my friends at the flgc.
That step by step build up really helped.
I’ve decided there’s only one way to do this… BoW declare me the winner of the extended starter bundle! 😉
Got lots to catch up on this week.
Great week of coverage, looking forward to giving this game a try at our local club.
Love the content, definitely sold on the game!
Well I figure the starter boxes are a great way to begin. Without the rules though it has been hard for me to figure out how to expand my forces. Thanks for the advice.
Nice walk through. The mechanics look really interesting. I’ve got my fingers crossed for one of the prizes.
Nice discussion and explanation of the army makeups. Thanks for an excellent week of videos. Hope you’ll do some more in the future, battle reports / let’s play etc.
Thanks for this guys very helpful xxxx
Very nice information about how to build a force and so easy to build and change between the different levels. I especially like the fact that there are some options in the higher rank levels. They are beautiful models and yet I still can’t make a choice over the faction to start with.
Still love the models and wish you guys would make a goritsi video to flesh out one of their armies as well. Anyway thanks all the same and I’ll keep my eye out for this game if I see it.
Seems easy enough to create a force of any size, and even with a battle sized force, there isn’t an overwhelming number of miniatures
Very nice, these kind of videos are great. More so when you have a system that uses a non standard convention of army building. It helps you understand what you are getting into. Now if you would be nice enough to pick my name out of the hat and contribute to the start of my armies it would be greatly appreciated. Yes I said armies as I can’t make up my mind between Nasier and Goritsi and they both come it the starter I am going to do both. It will also make it easier to get an opponent.
Great!
Tekness or Shael Han. Tekness or Shael Han. I just can decide which I give the top billing to.
Thanks these guides are really useful
I like the simplicity of the force construction, as well as it depth as to unit level playing a huge part of assembling you toops.
So how is the balance in this game turning out? It seems like it would be hard consider the minimal “point” values that are involved. We’re essentially talking one point versus two point models here.
Those faction starter boxes get you two different types of troops w/ sergeants, a couple of specialists and you can find them on Amazon for as low as $35 sometimes.
I really like how force building works here, no need for a spreadsheet but still with some flexibility.
I tried the Patrol size game. Awesome system. Easy to play.
I love the way you build your forces in this game you can just group your models into rank 1 & 2 groups & just build your army from them. easy to do.
This game looks awesome. Those Nasier look as tough as balls!
This is a great visual for the process. It’s nice to see someone explaining the hows and whys of their picks as well.
I’ve been hoping for this video all week- the force building mechanic of ‘Ranks’ is one of my favourite aspects of WOK as it’s quick and easy to understand, but very flexible with plenty of depth to it!
For myself, I’m a sucker for those Rank 2s- even at the smallest level of game I always like to take at least three. It’s most probably not the best idea tactically (or from a Morale perspective), but those Wrath/ Frenzies/ Fel-Hammers etc are just too cool-looking to resist!
Occasionally though, against a force with lots of models you can finish your Activations before your opponent- depending how well-coordinated they are this can leave some of their horde unable to Activate for the Turn (as they’ll only get one more Activation)!..
Nice and straightforward, a good structure across the whole game as to to what to take. Using models with the same trait to allow for that all important combined activation, very good
nice showing
Pretty interesting army building system. I like it!
tiative
Initiative is based on army size is agreat balancing mechanic for army strengh vs numbers composition
Good video
Great video. Now you have a very good idea to start and with the rules free to download, you can’t go wrong. Super!
an other very informative video
cool looking army and awesome paint job. seriourly cool
Nice finish to a great theme week.
Love the video. Great way to present the info. Army building is always a challenge. I think the system of relating the specialties is really functional.
its great watching someone who knows what hes doing, unfortunately thats not me until ive read and re read the book a few times. even then its not guaranteed memory of a goldfish……….mmmm nice bridge lol
Force building sounds interesting, but just how big is a standard size game? You said that was a lot of models, but that doesn’t seem much compared to the games I play. A lot compared to infity and the like though.
That was easier than I expected. Even with the limitations it’s still very flexible.
i Love how it works to built an army , cause you do not have to many miniatures even for the biggest format of battle so it’s still manageble (sorry for my bad english )
Nice to see the full forces on the table. Really keen to get into this game.
Great video. Very very informative for the absolute beginner in this game. I will definitely go with Shael Han especially after seeing Dave Taylor slap himself – really cracked me up big time
:), I just hope the new minis come out soon.
great week
Nice straight forward system to army building is always a nice thing.
I love the flexibility with building an army. Definitely all about hordes.
Thanks for the vid guys
That seems like a nicely straightforward system.
I am interested in the army building system that the game has.
Seems like a fairly intuitivie system. I like what I see in this game so far!
Nice and quick army building is always great
I fear I’m gonna break the No more new systems rule again, I love these mini’s
Good stuff to know!
Great insight into how to build your force
Very informative, thank you
Interesting to hear Dave’s take on list building. Interesting to see the way the game scales up as well – these types of videos would be useful across loads of different systems – really useful for people looking to get into new games!
I really love the miniatures for this game
This looks to be the size of game I thought Sigmar was going to be, but hat ended up looking like a massed battle game afterall.
Nice explanation of how you build your force, but the big thing I’m taking away is what a painter Dave is. Hats off!
Pity we don’t have more build examples
I’m so tempted now 🙂
the future for this game and its story looks good.
I was finally able to cach up with WoK week and while watching all the videos I was thinking why I’m so attracted to Goritsi but not by the fluff or by how the minis looks but by some familiarity of the faction general feel and how it should work. I know it’s strange because it is the first time I see this game.
Suddenly “snap” and it hit me” Devourers of Vile-Ttis! One of my beloved faction from Confrontation have came back to wage some battles at tabletop! Ok in the past there were shaved werewolves and dark elfs now they are werewolves and vampires but so close to concept dear to me that I’m really in love with this faction.
For the first time in a long time I really hope I would have just enaugh luck to just win the. That would be even more epic return to the roots 😀
Im lured on this Game, very easy to grab a small forcé and update it to bigger levels.
Awesome vid. Love this game.. looking forward to building my Hadross force.
