Happy Sunday Backstagers!
Looking forward to the topic this week.
Happy Sunday! @templar007
Good Morning and Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday @jocke 🙂
Will the person selected get to use Justin’s yellow blanky?
Yellow one is gone, the current one is still shade of off white 😉
Cult?. Are you sure the third letter is correct?.
Some sort of sash and maybe bowler hats like in clockwork orange or those societies like the noise and the elks might be cool. The sash could have a badge with LOL on it which would stand for Loyal Otter Lodge
@torros I like the “Loyal Otter Lodge”! That’s a keeper. That’s a thing now…YUP ??
I knew you guys would take to this like ducks to water lol 😉
Interestingly, the collective noun for a group of otters is actually a lodge. Or a bevy, or a romp, which could, maybe, also work for a group of OTTers.
You know you may have helped me realise something. Ive often wondered about my morbid curiosity for secret societies etc It may well be the Norn Irish thing and growing up seeing the Orange Men and their funky badges etc that my grandfather used to tell me he couldn’t tell me about. (My uncle said he could but he’d then have to kill me lol – I stopped asking after that as I thought 8 years old was a bit young lol)
Every day is a learning day
I thought the badges were mostly a time thing in the different orders in our lands and as with anyone from Ireland, slip them a Guinness or a whiskey and they tell you everything!
Happy Sunday!
@warzan – I could submit my showreel as a video cameraman; but as that would be mostly from my family trip to Disneyland it will include my infamous segment of the main parade that consists mostly of video of my feet in-between pointing a paused camera at the actual parade floats. I’ll get my coat…
I’ve got a cool symbol for the cult. It’s easy to draw and is an abstract representation of a player’s game-turn.
To represent the start of your turn draw a 2 inch spiral, inside out, with three full anti-clockwise rotations ending with your pen at the right hand side – these signify the card drafting, the reinforcements, the resource generation or the healing actions at the start of the turn.
For the core part of your turn – the movement – continue your line upwards for about 6 inches and immediately begin to draw a clockwise circle and a half about an inch across until your pen is on the right of the circle – tbe searching, the fighting etc – at which point draw a 6 inch line downwards. This bit illustrative of your supply lines, unit cohesion and ensuring things are in cover.
Finally, to represent the end of turn actions – the discards, the putting your units in overwatch, the passing of the dice etc- let your downward line turn into a second, inward, anti-clockwork spiral mirroring the one you started with.
Easy, a bit Celtic with the spirals and representative of the typical OTT backstager’s mindset. I reckon before long we’ll find evidence of other CoGgers all over the place – especially as graffiti in men-s toilet cubicles.
Too obvious but how about COG pins. Pins that look like actual cogs. As you get promoted, you get more interlocking cogs. Do something special, you get a mainspring or fly wheels or similar. Essentially, all the parts in a fine, old fashioned, watch.
Secret greeting sign is pulling out a pocket watch or looking at your watch. (Or not, as no one seems to carry or wear watches anymore.)
Sign is, Do you have the time? Counter sign is, Only for games.
lol Awesome – yeah pins would be fun 🙂
That sounds like a winner to me Blip 🙂
Happy Sunday all! Looking forward to seeing @avernos ‘ Romans. For now, I’ll catch up on the show after a good nights sleep!
Happy Sunday all … It’s been a while since I could watch it on the day .. so this’ll be good. I don’t know about all this playing the “bad guys of the table top” stuff though . I will watch but as soon as elves appear, I am leaving ……. 😉
Has Ben just given up?
Shit!
We left him behind the owlbear for the whole show.
If you guys are looking for a good CoreXY design 3D printer, Creality Ender 5 is a good way to start.
Maybe you need regalia to show the significant steps that BoW have taken over the years that the Grand Otter would where at special functions
For example Justin’s blanket could become the cloak of hard times which would signify where BoW started etc
You know I would probably enjoy the camera job , if I could get to the UK in that week (work would say “No!” … sods) BUT …. do I have to join the Loyal Otter Lodge to do so??? I’ve heard things about the initiation ritual and I am NOT willing to do that ……… 😀
I think Lance’s first test for th cult is to get Gerard Butler to wear the cult symbol… and to make Ben happy, maybe the symbol could be an owlbear?
Managed to get the Knight Preceptor and trio of Armiger Warglaives for my Imperial Knights list finished off (or at least to a state I’d be happy to take on the table). Otherwise it’s all about the fluff – had a trio of sourcebooks for the Infinity RPG as well as the Daedalus Fall book turn up Friday so working through those 🙂
Of course then @warzan posted up about the discount on the OTT shop for Blackstone Fortress, so I guess I need to clear some of the hobby backlog….
I have eaten an impossible burger, in a restaurant in the states last year. It’s pretty close to a fast food type burger. Not bad and I think pretty close to the real thing.
As for the new name for Backstagers, we could be called “Secret society of OTTers” (SSOO).
And heres the secret greeting https://youtu.be/46ZqREHecng
I can’t believe all those people are just sitting and laughing while that poor otter is giving the the international sign of distress
@warzan minor point on the costs just cos my work life won’t let it go… you need to factor in the cost of the “consumables” (print bed, alcohol rub etc) per kilo of material. It might only push the kilo rate to maybe £25 at a max but it should still be factored in.
Making me work on a Sunday… mean!
@warzan
To strip them Bios Strip 20 is what you want, it’s an incredible product and strips minis really quickly
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Biostrip-Stripper-remover-solution-effortlessly/dp/B00B4WK17K/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1XNZ972HV1P2N&keywords=biostrip+20&qid=1556438390&s=gateway&sprefix=biostrip%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-1
the paint will literally fall off with this.
I can second that sentiment – Biostrip 20 is fantastic stuff. And as a bonus it’s non-toxic, so you don’t need gloves, and is effectively odourless. Just be careful of any resin you try to strip….
I have been following Paint Be Gone via their FB page though and want to give it a try when they get UK distribution set up though. Looks to be an interesting product if it can live up to the demo vids https://www.facebook.com/officialpaintbegone/
I just use dettol it’s awesome and piney fresh 😀
I miss Fairy Power Spray, it was awesome as it would strip paint but leave primer. They changed the formulae and ruined it. It might cut through greasy surfaces better but it won’t strip acrylic paint anymore.
A cult? Well I’m already a #DiscipleofMel but I surely get used to be a #DiscipleofOTT. We will take new recruits to the OTTer side and show them the OTTerly glorious life of the miniature hobby. But OTTer than that I can’t think of any new names at the moment.
Not only would the CoG idea be cool but I will also agree to get my first tattoo along with Justin.
I really wouldn’t want something to read my mind…that implant would be dangerous on the likes of me! So many people would be told to go away in a not so polite manner. This technology would be great through, my dad suffered from a type of Parkinsons and really struggled to speak towards the end and found it so frustrating. His mind was perfect, he would meet people in the street he hadn’t seen for years and could tell you everything about them, when he finally could get it out. Great to see stuff like this.
aye my dad went the same way, he needed to take a pause and a run up at things to get them out.
Happy Sunday all! Hard to beat doing some hobby while listening to hobby time! Great stuff. The bases look great, and such a good way of spring cleaning!
For paint stripping Ive used a product called Biostrip20 very easy to use and i think it works quite well from what I remember! Definitely recommend giving it a go.
I’d be up for joining a cult because braces are awesome. I used to wear them to school, because like Lloyd, I’m all front and no back, though a lot more front than Lloyd, so when you make braces sign me up for the first pair! Also being in cult/secret society seems mandatory for living in Northern Ireland and currently I am not in one, so feel I am missing out on things.
Kuru is the disease caused by cannibalism. It is not very pleasant from what I have read about it. Avoiding eating the brain is the key to avoiding it.
3D printing, it does seem to be a case that it is massive problem solving exercise. I think I will stick to cardboard and my hot glue gun for the moment. It would be well worth following Fenris Games on Twitter as he is doing 3D printing and running into interesting problems and having great successes as well. Also, how much electricity does a 3D printer pull? Is it significant?
so many red pretorians…. and Eltharion the grim was blinded by Malekith, then was later redcond so he got his eye back, and then godt killed in end times by arkhan the black, but its a nice model, i use him as a loremaster.
… fucking retcons
A cult… I was not with the idea of a cult … until the idea of getting Justin tattoo came up…now I a thinking it could be fun…lol
Symbol has to be a cog around the old BoW symbol 🙂
Happy Sunday!
I’ve always wanted to join a cult, fully onboard with the idea.
Happy Sunday…..enjoyed the show, the old shit story brought back memories of a time when caught short so crapped in the bushes but the old angle was wrong and log dropped in me pants wiped my arse with a doc leaf pulled my pants up and log splat up my back crack not a nice feeling but anyway walking home with fly’s round ass wasnt nice even worse got home dog shoved his nose right in there when he smelt it..but at least my parents enjoyed it….
Great show guys, I had to listen to it on the train home so I didn’t get to see anything but it sounded great.
I wish I could help with 3D Printer suggestions @warzan but to quote Oddball from Kelly’s Heroes “I only ride ’em, I don’t know what makes ’em work” although for me it’s “I only make stuff for them I don’t know what makes it work”.
“Uh Saga” THE GIANT AWAKES! RUN! XD
Once again, this was an absolute grand way to start my sunday. Thank you 🙂
Fair play to you Warren,I haven’t laughed as much in a long time on hearing your childhood story. As well as that we really need to see Gerrys Praetorian Guard project on the site when ever he starts.
Happy Sunday folks!
@avernos / @dignity – they changed the recipe of Fairy Power spray a few years ago. The original recipe was awesome for paint stripping, however the new recipe replaces the funky ingredient with citrus, so instead of stripping paint off you just get clean fruity-smelling minis, so sounds like Gerry was using the new variety 🙂
My personal favourite is BioStrip20 – its water-based, but it eats through paint in no time at all!
@warzan – let me have a rummage around the boxes, “might” be able to help you with the dwarfs…
@warzan if I was not attending with my boys I would absolutely love to be one of the team, I will see you all there hopefully!
@averos those Saracens are awesome. I’m currently painting up some 28mm Gripping Beast and Footsore Arabs so your hobby has definitely given me some ideas for colours, that and the recent Painting War magazine. May I ask what inks you used?
Fairy Power Spray used to work, but they changed the formulae 5 or 6 years ago. Dettol is smelly and messy but it is safe, cheap and all the cuts in your hands are disinfected at the same time.
@lloyd the Perry brothers sculpted a hell of a lot of the Foundry Range, indeed, a lot of the Foundry sculpts were previously released by Citadel. Gerry would be able to explain it better than myself.
@lloyd @robert
This explains it best https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/pages/about-us
Cheers for that, @torros. I couldn’t remember some of the details.
So how do I join the cult of Cogthulu
Will the YouTube algorithm take offence when you ask people to join the cult?
One of us. One of us. One of us …
Cult count me in, what is the initiation process?
You heard the bath story? Hope its not some sort of baptism!
LMAO
For Justin’s tattoo just get a C on one arse cheek and G on the other, he will be the first COG
As a lot of people call me Bob, if anyone ever asks me if I have a tattoo, I tell them that I have a b tattooed on both ass cheeks so it spells my name when I bend over 🙂
2P’s or not 2P’s, is that the answer? In any case I can appreciate the attraction 🙂 Happy Sunday guys.
Hmn! Cult symbol like COG idea vert gears of war , with mini BOW symbol on middle but with a crossed sword and paintbrush over the top.
Of course as well we need hooded robs for get togethers and a secret knock , as in the Start to ‘Guards Guards’ by Pratchett!
The secret society could be called the Blue Oyster Cult and if the normies ever find out about it we can just say we like singing Don’t Fear the Reaper, which of course has to be the secret password too. Gerry’s Romans look great and Warren’s Elves look totally transformed. Lloyd’s skelebobs though are so simply modified that they are absolutly genius. The stab wound is really effective. Great work by you guy’s and another great show. Just seven more days to wait.
Stop with the cog stuff! GW will sue! Surely by now they have copyrighted cogs.
Loving the Spring clean Projects. A great way to motivate the community.
I wonder if it would work Tale of four gamers style for particular game systems in the future?
Loved the content. Especially the Saga. Too much Saga is barely enough. If loving Saga is wrong, I don’t want to be right. When will you be doing a Saga Age of Magic play through?
Food Challenge? Just saying is all…..
I use a Clean Spirit product from Wilko (think it is basically white spirit) in a sonic cleaner all the time and never had problems, strips both Metal and Plastic models.
The only caution is the sonic cleaner does obviously heat the liquid so I have had one occasion where it warped a plastic mini.
For Metal minis, it strips it to the point it lifts out clean will little to no work needed after.
I agree with @dignity on the mind reading thing. It’s not just about committing a social faux pah but saying the wrong thing can have you put in front of a Judge here in Australia let alone making dinner awkward. Then you get to things like Middle Eastern Countries who execute Homosexuals/Apostates and the power for the Government to read your mind is terrifying. We as humans have evolved to think then speak, we run everything through at least a minor filter before we say it even subconsciously eg. talking differently to your wife than your brother or friend and to bypass that would essentially rewire our entire Social Behavior.
Sure right now in it’s infancy it’s fantastic for people who cannot speak but anyone who thinks it will be left there and not taken even further is delusional. We basically carry a wiretap in our pockets 24/7 some people even have wiretaps put in their house (you know the one made by the company who signed a massive CIA contract but a contract with the CIA could never have secret clauses and run child labour factories with suicide nets so you know they’re at least ethical) and some people even microchip their kids all things that would be considered insanely creepy just a decade or two ago yet now everyone just accepts them or at least tolerates them.
In the future the Government being able to basically read your mind will just be part of life, if this sort of technology goes mainstream because as that moronic saying goes “If you have nothing to hid you have nothing to fear”. I’m not a conspiracy guy when it comes to the supernatural but when it comes to Government stuff like this the mere potential is terrifying.
Happy Sunday folks.
Got my Reaper Colossal Bone Giant on Saturday,it’s a big, lovely 4 piece kit and it’s going to look great as part of my SAGA AoM Skellybob Warband.
I love the weekender XLBS and this was a fantastic one. I will join the cult!
Happy Sunday to all backstage and future cultists.
First of all yes I love the rename idea, not that I have an issue with things being called Backstage but I can kinda see the fun that could be had with the change.
@warzan great hobby this week and huge props to the team & community members that helped along the way. I’m keen to see more of this.
My Sunday started with painting up come of my Skaven DoomWheel pieces
Happy Sunday.
If it’s any help, my ex-wife told everyone we knew I’m a right cult, so I’m Ok with anything.
I’m incredibly jealous of @avernos and his collection of Praetorians.I remember them from a GW Games Day as part of a massive diorama featured in WD.
Weren’t the Praetorians in that diorama just the Mordians but with a head swap and different paint job?
mostly yes, a couple of alternate poses and some special weapons that the mordians didn’t have
A cult eh?
We need robes
one of us! one of us! one of us!
Happy Sunday. So you want to be a cult? I think you just want to be declared a religion so you get some tax breaks. lol.
@warzan et al, Hi Chaps, I’m naturally enjoying the show. Just to let you know that the Palm tickle hand shake is a form of GAY advance. I suspect it dates back to the pre legalisation era and was a discrete thing used with Polari (London’s GAY Language).
Loving the cult idea!! Will be first in line for the Tshirt and secret handshake demo video 🙂
I’m not against the cult thing, but given that YouTube is funny about content with reference to war, what would the algorithm think of indoctrination into cults? 😉
they’ll never know, the XLBS isn’t on youtubes 😉
True, but apparently YouTube scans the content of videos for keywords or whatever. So if it gets talked about alot then it may register?
I recall Warren discussing that just changing the channel name or video labelling to omit ‘war’ wouldn’t get them past the censor if the discussion keeps throwing up key phrases.
To be fair it probably isn’t a significant issue, just something that crossed my mind.
@warzan if you change your mind re painted Dwarves I have a mantic 1 player set still in box, only a couple of bits clipped off the sprue sitting around…
Bought the Anycubic Photon in December and mainly used it for Battletech, Gaslands and over smaller actual miniatures. I actually ordered the Mega-S on Thursday, just to be able to cheaply print Terrain for my gaming needs.
I used to scratch build terrain from Styrodur foam and all the classic materials, but this eases up my life and as I’m nowadays working and such I have less time.
I can’t recommend the Anycubic ones enough. They’re great if you want to use 3D printing for your Hobby, and I’m not looking to make 3D printing itself a hobby.
Brilliant show guys, loved the childhood story. I’d be tempted with another tattoo.
Hearing about Jobbie Time was an unexpected bonus this weekend…
If you’re printing something with as much surface contact with the print bed as those tower pieces you can probably just print straight to a glass print bed, with maybe a bit of glue stick to help the first layers stick properly. Keep an eye on the first few layers in case they decide to curl and then it should be good to go. You also get a lovely smooth finish printing on glass, and there’s slightly less wrestling to get the thing off at the end.
For smaller pieces stay with the more textured bed materials, but move your prints around to even out wear and tear on the print bed material.
Spicing up the Backstage sounds great. Not too keen on the cult idea though. It could make me hesitate to promote the virtues of joining Backstage to my gaming friends as it would sound weird.
Is Sean Connery with his moustache, mankini, twin-shooters and owlbear some sort of messiah figure for the cult? Will the COGmeister-in-chief/Grand High OTTer wear similar regalia to officiate at ceremonies?
Or is he some sort of anathema to them? Since in the film, Zed challenges the domination of the Eternals of Zardos over the savage Brutals. Surely then, he is some sort of mythical cult-buster and should be feared.
Happy Sundays folks and yet another thoroughly enjoyable XLBS as usual.
I haven’t got much to comment on this weekend as i have started a new job with killer shift patterns so i am pretty spaced out! However just kicking back and watching the back and forth from you guys is always a great way to spend some quality chill time on a Sunday afternoon 🙂 .
Have a great week guys and see you all next weekend!
Good afternoon, OTT! We have a live stream going on the Sitrep Twitch Channel at 9:00 PM UK time, where we’ll see if @elessar2590 can lead his Australians in a successful “seek and destroy” patrol against my National Liberation Front Viet Cong (Phuoc Tuy Province, summer, 1968).
https://www.twitch.tv/sitreppodcast/
The game system, will be Valor & Victory, adopted and expanded to Vietnam. Vietnam-specific rules will include civilians, POWs, casualty evacuation, booby traps, helicopters, and obscured / hidden movement for the Viet Cong.
Check out the stream and see how we do! Hope to see some of you there!
This year a movie about Long Tan (Australia’s most famous battle of the Vietnam conflict) is coming out in August. Basically, it’s our Rorke’s Drift, 108 Anzacs vs 2500ish Vietnamese.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyUqZLwOo2Y
More than a few of us in Oz are looking forward to it
Thanks, @horus500 . Indeed, @elessar2590 was talking about Long Tan and the movie during the live stream. It’s up on Twitch now, I’ll start clipping highlights for YouTube in the next couple of days. 😀
@warzan a Kill-O-Watt meter or what every the UK equivalent is would be able to get your electrical costs from the printers. if you are using Cura as your slicer you are already able to get estimates of material cost per print. you guys have me really looking at getting one of those Megacubic printers as my second machine currently annoying at my extremely limited print area on my Monoprice Select Mini V2. Also another thing to keep in mind with the Delta printers is they need to be calibrated periodically to continue to print without stretching or compressing one of the axis
I had a bit too much last night after Avengers and my garbage pale reminds me of Warrens story… so I better throw that out one more time.
My dearest Warren
YO WARREN listen up!
Alloys that contain iron are ferrous, some ferrous alloys are not magnetic.
Nickle Cobalt and Iron are magnetic materials.
2p pieces may be magnetic if the alloy contains enough Nickle. 2p pieces do NOT contain iron and are therefore NOT ferrous.
@lloyd
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2501149
there are SAGA dice that can be printed!
That Shit story was Friggen hilarious!!!! Love the hobby work from y’all this week. Warren those bases look killer. Happy Sunday boys from The Bay Area
its a mark one BORG data node. ?
Really liked the reposing of the Skeletons Loyd.
The Merky Water Brethren. I like the sound of that! lol
Happy Sunday. The Cult seems a decent idea. Would we get membership cards like the HPLS does?
that tower looks fantastic.
nice one guys.
Good stuff on 3D printing, what sort of layer height are you going for with stuff from printable scenery? I have some of their earlier stuff which I use for frostgrave which was printed at 0.2mm which seems fine for terrain.
where’s Benji???? @brennon
on the screen rocking his red posing pouch
wrong, so, so wrong
Cult of Gamers: I’ll say yes to the change of name on the provision I get to be the High Magister of the Wales Chapter of the Cult.
?
Talking implants: I’m with Gerry, I think it’s more about letting someone like Stephen Hawking be able to speak without the need of something more cumbersome like a text-to-speech device than Justin’s idea of broadcasting every little thought that enters your head.
“I’m staying quiet right now, completely silent” says Justin; is this kinda like those boxes on forms that have ‘Leave this box blank’ printed inside them? ?
Raffle: at first when Warren said do a raffle I thought he meant that the prize would be a laser cutter. ?
Uniform painting: I don’t know if anyone else also brought it up, but if you were referring to what I was talking about last week Lloyd, I wasn’t saying you can’t have a mix I was just countering your assertion that made it sound like you were against any uniformity in fantasy armies at all by pointing out that there are valid reasons for some fantasy armies to have uniformity.
Warren’s treeman Army: if you’re going to be using the autumn leaves on the bases, have you considered adding some to the treemen themselves? 😉
I’m there/here/post a comment as per request.
I like the CoG idea as a backstage name change. definitely opens exclusive merch opportunities!
Aircraft Engines are being 3d printed now. At least parts of the GE jet engines are 3d printed, and their newest engines are getting more and more parts. The thing is that 3d printers allow for engineering possibilities that cannot happen in classic engineering, it takes off quite a bit of weight.
The GE Catalyst engine will soon be in production.

I will only join a cult if it has hoods. So that we can do the secret handshake in public, but whenever the cult actually meets nobody knows who is who.
ARE YOU CALLING ME A CULT?
I’m not personally ok with using the term Cult – I think it still has far to many negative connections when you use the word.
Happy to be rebranded into something other than a backstager, but I would never refer to myself as being in a cult.
If you are talking about community and inclusivity, then if I told my Dad I was a member of a cult, he would not see the humour or fun side of that – he would be thinking about all the negative, and then being in a cult would mean exclusion, the non-gamers you speak to would turn away totally I think and not even be remotely interested in listening to anything to do with the hobby.
Thanks for the feedback @marktarver – we’ll do our very best to make sure its just seen as a bit of fun and kept lighthearted 🙂
Hi HI
just came back after a few months away, (No Computer)boooo
But “I Like being in the back stage band.
But now i’m back;
from outer space.
Join the Backstage Cult,
I am satanist now I will become cultist !!!
Oh a cog cult 😉 nice:)
Thank you guys for the nice show.
Long live the cult!
Happy sunday!
I’ll join the cult!
@avernos I defo suggest mentholated spirit for stripping paint. 20 minutes soak, scrub. If you need another, give it another 20 minutes and scrub. You don’t need to wash them, the spirit will evaporate. Plus the spirit is reusable. Used it myself to great effect.
I just stick with dettol, reusable as well and I’ve had excellent results for years with it.
Also less likely to drink it if you run out of whiskey!
I’ve got lighter fluid for that
Long live the cult!!!!
From me, after a long, somewhat difficult day at work and family stuff, this was 2 hours of solid joy. A fantastic bunch of guys just chatting about hobby and some good natured banter. A wonderful piece of content, thank you so much for the company while I paint my way through my backlog. Please don’t stop these videos!
Sign me up for the cult!
I would totally love the change to Cult of Gamers.
someone mentioned Cog Pins in the comments….I would TOTALLY buy those
